Week 5 of Adventures in Strategic Communications

This week has just flown by so fast. I can't believe my class is already over. I had so much fun learning to build a website! Just take a look at the pages that I was able to create.

This is my home screen, otherwise known as the index page. On my webpages, each link at the top connects to the appropriate page. The icons at the bottom, also, take a use to my personal pages.

This page is my resume page. I have included a link on the page for a viewer to download a copy of it.

Next on the list of pages is my gallery page. Each picture on the gallery will open a new window with the picture and a brief explanation by clicking on the picture.

The fourth page that I created was my audio page. This page includes audio files that I produced. A user would only need to push the play button to hear the audio file.

This is my video page. Each video is embedded into the page and will play when the icon is clicked. No taking the user to a new page! The videos play right where they are. Of course, there is the option of viewing the video on the original platforms, as well.

The last page is a map page. I chose Hot Springs, AR because my family often visit and some of the pictures from my gallery page were taken there. This map can zoom in and out. Grabbing the map allows someone interacting with it to move about the map. Finally, there is an option to view a larger version of the map which will take a user right to the google map page.

Again, this class has been amazing. I learned so much and had fun doing it, too. If you need to take a media course through Arkansas State University, I highly recommend Introduction to Internet Communications with Dr. Lily Zeng. Next week is a new class - Interactive Advertising. See you then!

reminder that more often than not, it's important to take breaks from writing instead of forcing yourself through it. listen to your body and intuition.

i say this as someone who writes almost every day. sometimes, that isn't sustainable. sometimes, you need to take breaks from your projects because you're tired from working on them. i have to admit that understanding when to stop and take a break is a skill in itself, but with time, you will master it. you've got this. if not today, then tomorrow.

today, you rest. tomorrow, if you feel like writing, great! if not, rest a bit more. you know yourself better than anyone else. so trust yourself to know when to get back into writing. and don't punish yourself for not doing it.

I wonder how they made the purgatory 2 teams ... like with purgatory 1 you could tell they were tryign to break up most of the pre-established relationships for the sake of drama. but with purgatory 2 there are multiple team-ups of people who really really wanted to be teamed together - for example, etoiles, who joined purgatory 2 specifically to play with kenny, got to be teamed with him. plus iirc they did do team balancing to a certain extent (and also didnt team any purgatory 1 players with each other). so I wonder if they went the MCC/block wars/pandoras box route of "google form that asks you who youd like to be teamed with"! I feel like that would account for some of the interesting/unexpected decisions especially amongst new players (eg. Rodezel, who really wanted to be teamed with Bad)

#from an events standpoint it looks like purg2 is going to be a lot cleaner than purg1 #i think the issues w purg1 stem from a) the creators not expecting 2 be thrust into a competitive event b) the destabilization it aimed for #3) rules and balancing changing daily and things not being explain÷ #explained <- this is interesting for lore but bad for game design #4) high stakes high tension surrounding fhe safety of fictional children ppl get up in arms abt that #purg1 was an experiment which has been refined into purg2 and overall i think it will work better in this revised form #the shorter time frame will be good for tension and not dragging things out too long #but ill miss some of the downtime and quieter moments purg1 was able to offer i think #the way the players had time to discuss and adjust and strategize and attempt to bargain with each other #i get the feeling most of the connections made in purg2 will be between players in each team as opposed to across them #which isnt bad just different #idk! im very hopeful! the community response so far has been 1 million times better than for purg1 so i have faith #qsmp #qpurgatory 2 #bearvocalizations

so i've been thinking about the universal translator as depicted in star trek. a UT has to do two things: help the wearer understand and be understood. it's easy to imagine how it helps the wearer understand -- it's embedded in people's minds somehow, so it messes with their language comprehension centers to give them the meaning of what they've just heard/seen. but how does it help the wearer be understood when they're talking to people who don't have the UT installed to help them understand? i can see two possible explanations:

option 1: the UT edits sound as it comes out of the wearer's mouth (or their motions if they're signing/writing)

option 2: the UT telepathically (?) goes into the AUDIENCE'S brain so that THEY understand. it doesn't change anything about how the wearer communicates.

cons of option 1: there are probably some languages whose sounds are impossible to make via human mouths (i think cardassian is supposed to be one of these languages).

cons of option 2: probably considered extremely invasive by some; wouldn't work for species that are psi-null; requires that the UT can figure out how to translate a new language AND a strange species' language centers all at the same time.

personally i lean towards option 1, but i'm curious what you guys think!

also because this is star trek there's a GOOD CHANCE this has been explained canonically and if so please let me know!

Some better news for today, the Austrian communist party saw a huge increase in votes in last Sundays local election in Salzburg putting them on tack to establish a second communist mayor in a major Austrian city after Graz! They are on this run partially because they are the only real leftwing opposition in the country but also by standing by their commitment against capitalism and, probably most importantly, their commitment to provide local services like tenant organising, minor financial aid and legal advice for tenants!
