Le personnage du gourou marabout et absent de cette version , c'est également la première fois que Roger Roger récupère les lignes de dialogue de la speakerine ( qui de toute façon ne ré apparaitra jamais plus ) .

Le personnage de l'extraterrestre est interpréter par un petit garçon de 10 ans , ce qui explique cette petite voix un peu nasillarde et surprenante dans l'album .

Finally heard the full "air de l'extra-terrestre!!"
It was only ever included in its original form on the 78 studio vinyl (not the CD) and in two of the early Quebec recordings, and is not included on any of the most well-known recordings I've found or in any of the well-known stage productions -- even the 79 show had already turned it into the "Final" which is sung by Balavoine as his soul ascends or whatever, and the ensemble reprises "Petite musique terrienne," and the alien guy doesn't get to berate them about being stupid idiots lol (Apparently the 1980 Québec had a child sing it? Which might be the only time it was actually done live!)
BUT when you listen to it a LOT of things start to make (more obvious) sense, and I'm so happy that there's a nod to it in the new show!
First of all, musically, you need the reprise from the "Petite musique terrienne" air to close the show so it echos the beginning of the Ouverture. If you don't have that air in the show at all, the Ouverture is basically orphaned.
Then, lyrically, the air EXPLICITELY spells out that the whole show is meant as an indictment of the fame-seeking behaviour that all of its characters exhibit (which is obviously implied, but the point is never really hammered home in a song) :
Qu´est-ce que c´est que cette Starmania? Vous vous prenez pour qui, pour quoi? Moi qui suis d´une autre planète Je vous surveille dans ma lunette Et je vous trouve bien minuscules Bien ridicules!
What the hell is this 'Starmania' / Who or what do you think you are / Being from another planet / I'm watching you through my lens / And I find you so very small / So very ridiculous!
It also gives a moral to the story and makes it clear there are no good guys here:
Un rayon de soleil suffit Et vous êtes tous anéantis Vous n´avez encore rien compris Avec vos bombes et vos fusils Vous êtes tout petits, petits
A ray of sunlight / And you are all destroyed / You still don't get it / With you bombs and your guns / You are so, so small
(Just in case you thought Berger and Plamondon advocated violence from any side)
But it also acts as a sort of reality check to the human tragedy & darkness of the story by putting things into a wider existential context:
Habitants de la planète Terre Vous n´êtes pas seuls dans le monde A cent millions d´années-lumière Nous avons su capter vos ondes [...]
Non, ce n´est pas la fin du monde Le temps qui passe est infini Le temps d´une vie N´est pas une onde Dans l´espace
Sur des millards d´années-lumière Que sont vos heures et vos secondes? Comment voulez-vous que la Terre Soit le centre du monde?
Earthlings / You are not alone in the world / A hundred million light-years away / We were able to receive your signal [...]
No, it's not the end of the world / Passing time is infinite / The span of one life / Is not a wave / In space
Compared to billions of light-years / What are your hours and your seconds? / How could you think that Earth / Is the center of the world?
And I think the "Final" with Balavoine in the 79 show does try to fulfill the same role with its own lyrics:
Maintenant, pour moi tout s'éclaire Je n'ai fait que passer sur Terre Le temps d'une vie Mais le temps est infini
Now for me things are clear / I was just passing on Earth / For the span of one lifetime / But time is infinite
But it loses the moralizing outsider POV (maybe not a bad thing!)
Plus, let's face it, the second half of the air itself isn't the most memorable or the most momentous -- I think it is nicer musically to close the show with the "Petite musique terrienne" than with the weirdly poppy "Qu'est ce que c'est que cette Starmania" chorus.
The 2022 show references this air in two places: just before "Le monde est Stone" you hear the Roger Roger voice (Thomas Jolly) say the first couple lines: "Quelle heure est-il en ce moment, est-ce la fin du monde ou le commencement ?" [What time is it right now, is it the end of the world or the beginning?] and then after the curtain falls, the main cast come back and reprises "Petite musique terrienne" together, which is a lovely and moving way to end the show IMO.
ANYWAY those are my wayyy over-thought thoughts! (I have to put them somewhere!! Do you have thoughts?? Put them here!!)

La minute de silence (The minute's silence) - Michel Berger and Daniel Balavoine
Just wanted to share some thoughts about this song, and this performance in particular:

From left to right: Daniel Balavoine and Michel Berger, 2 French singers who were very popular in the 70s-80s. They each have had their own career, but they were friends and they have worked together sometimes, especially in the 1978 Starmania musical where they met. Afterwards, they made 2 songs together: "Bateau toujours" ("Boat always") in 1980 for DB's album "Un autre monde" ("Another world") and this one, "La minute de silence" in 1983 for MB's album "Voyou" ("Thug"). The performance above also happened in 1983.
And it touches me a lot. Why? Let me explain.
First of all, here are the translated lyrics of "The minute's silence":
Verse 1:

You will get discs out of their cover.
Our story,
You will see it scroll in your head.
So shhh,
Put gently a finger on your mouth.
And fight,
Erase from your memory these words that touch us.

As you may have noticed, this song talks about an old love relationship, a relationship that ended but you’re still nostalgic about it. So when they wrote and composed the song in 1983, and when they played it here together in 1983, the song only held this message.
However, three years later in January 1986, Daniel Balavoine died in a very tragic helicopter accident in Mali, where he was participating to an humanitarian operation. He was 33 years old.
Michel Berger was obviously devastated to lose his friend. So, at each of his tour dates during the first few months of 1986, he sang alone “The Minute’s Silence”, that now had taken another meaning: the definitive loss of a friend. Before starting to sing, he would tell his audience not to applaud at the end of the song, but instead to make a minute’s silence. Here’s him singing it at his last tour date (it starts at 3:30, though he talks about Daniel Balavoine from 2:20):

He slightly changed some sentences in the lyrics:
1st change:

2nd change:

In your these clouds of blue smoke.
From the first change, it’s clear the song is now about the end of the friendship between these 2 huge hearts, Michel Berger and Daniel Balavoine. The 2nd change could be an error, and he might has said “in his clouds of blue smoke” (because “his” and “these” are pronounced the same in french), but it makes more sense if he meant “these”, as the lights on stage seemed to be blue.
The song has now evolved into a sort of conversation, where Michel Berger tells the audience to make a minute’s silence for his lost friend.
Six years go by, and another terrible event happens: Michel Berger dies of a heart attack in August 1992 at age 44. His wife France Gall will then interpret this song during her tours, in memory of her husband and their friend.
Do you now understand why the first video in this post is so emotional?
They’re sitting next to each other, singing this song together, and even if they didn’t know it at that time, they were talking to the audience. They were saying “you’re going to discover musical models of songs that we didn’t have the time to finish”, “you’re going to get our discs out of their cover to listen to us again”, “you’re going to have memories about us”, “you’re going to listen to what remains of us, that is to say our songs”. They were and they are still asking the audience to make a minute’s silence for them:

Ce 7 janvier 2019 est un triste jour puisque France Gall nous a quitté il y a un an. Cette grande artiste a chanté des chansons des plus grands. Elle a marqué les années 1960 avec Serge Gainsbourg (Poupée de cire, poupée de son, Laisse tomber les filles, Les sucettes) puis les années 1970, 1980 jusqu'au début des années 1990 avec Michel Berger (son rôle dans Starmania, La Déclaration, Résiste, Babacar). Cette chanson peu connue "Ce soir je ne dors pas" est écrite et composée par Michel Berger. Elle est interprétée par France Gall en 1976.

OOOOOH : I like that one ! Hmmmm… Let’s exclude West End for this one, otherwise I’ll never get to a top three
Top 3 (in no particular order)
Notre Dame de Paris  (special mention Roméo & Juliette et Starmania)
Tanz Der Vampire
Les Misérables (I mean at the starting point it’s french, though I do admit I very much prefer the 1991 version with the additions of the West End adaptation) and although it’s an adaptation as well, I love Dracula Das Musical especially with Thomas Borchert and Uwe Kröger. (special mention : Rebecca das Musical | I’m only discovering german musicals tbh and I really like what I heard so far but I have not listened much to Rebecca even though I like what I’ve heard and read so far)
Reasons / Live / Anecdote
NDdP : First I grew up with this soundtrack. The first musical soundtrack I’ve heard was NDdP (and Starmania and then came R&J). I was basically in love and crushing over the whole cast. I did not understand everything and every word but I knew half of the concept album by heart. I think it’s a whole as well, I love the music, the lyrics and growing up and opening myself to the world I realized how the story was still relevant today (that’s why I love Hugo) and how the staging was incredibly smart in this way. I have not seen it live yet, but I have my ticket for when they’ll tour near my hometown in April so soon ! As for an anecdote. Hmmmm…. I find it funny that Garou first auditionned for Frollo. Idk why but sometimes I imagine this and I really have either a hard time picturing it or laughing too hard.
TDV : why I like it. Let’s be completely honest, the first time I heard about it was when they played it at Mogador. And there was this promo on TV and I was not really watching but then I turned suddenly “Wait, isn’t this Total Eclipse of the Heart ?????” I was really confused. I let it go for a while, not giving anther thought but later on I was skyping with my bet friend and it came to my mind again and went to search the summary and see if I could like it. I found some part really great so I read it aloud to my best friend and really he’s not a musical enthusiast but I was pretty curious and still to this day we have to watch it together (I mean I’ve seen it but not yet with him xD). What I like in this is the character of Sarah and her “yeah whatever” attitude towards Alfred, she makes her own decisions and I like that. I love the character of Herbet as well and I love the music as well. I don’t have any anecdote though I saw a picture of Christopher Lee and Thomas Borchert after the opening night of TDV in 2009 (?) and apparently Lee really likde the musical and I just like this because I admire Christopher Lee in many ways not only for his acting career and yeah. Oh and I’ve not seen it live either. Only bootlegs.
Dracula Das Musical : I discovered the musical only a couple months ago. I had heard Thomas Borchert in TDV and I really liked his voice so I looked up his other credits and I found a video of Die Verführung of the Graz production of the musical and I loved it a lot. Loved the music, loved the cast and since I don’t speak German but it’s still close to English I try to decipher and try to understand what they mean and whenever I’m correct or not far from the turth I’m just “yay \o/ !” and so it fuels my want to learn German. I have not seen it live either but there’s the pro-shot video of the Graz production on YT so it’s planned on my “to-watch” list for very soon. The only anecdote I know about this musical is that this song, Zu Ende, was written specifically for Thomas Borchert and Uwe Kröger. In the original version Dracula and Van Helsing don’t have a duet or a song together and Thomas and Uwe are two of the most famous names in the German musical industry and it would have been a crime not to have them both singing in the same song so here.
French Musicals / Musicals in French Rec
it really all depends on what you search in a musical, the story, the songs, the musics, but I’ll give a list of the ones I like, but bear in mind it’s only my view and that there are plenty others that can interest you ;) !
Notre Dame de Paris (x) : my all-time favourite french musicals and even in my all-time favourite musicals list period. Amazing songs and lyrics, great music, amazing cast, simple yet brilliant staging and choreography. I love this musical I know most of the songs by heart and ugh did I mention I LOVE THIS MUSICAL ????
Starmania (x) : the second musical I heard when I was very young. I love the story and the songs are really great. One of the very first musical in France departing itself from “opérette” (hence the “opéra rock” mention).
Roméo & Juliette, de la Haine à l’Amour (x) : After NNdP and Starmania I heard R&J. Someone had gifted it to my older brother but he never listened to it. So I sneaked into his room and took the CD and listened to it. I was in love. I listened to it all the time, knew all the concept album by heart and developped a crush on Frédéric Charter aka The Prince. I loved the songs, loved the costumes, the story, great, great I loved it.
Le Roi Soleil (x) : not amazing but not bad it’s okay I guess. I liked it when i watched the DVD a few years ago. I only know the singles for this one though. Beautiful costumes and some good songs (some that are not well known like Entre Ciel et Terre)
Cléopâtre, La Dernière d’Egypte (x) : not on the same as the first three, but better than Le Roi Soleil for me. Great choreography, strong point of this musical and actual poc playing poc roles. Not exceptional but interesting to watch.
Le Petit Prince (x) : not as well known as the others but really poetic and Daniel Lavoie A++++. It’s really too bad it’s not known more. I bought the DVD recently so I can watch it again soon.
Oliver Twist, Le Musical (x) : it’s a new french musical, it’s playing now at La Salle Gaveau in Paris and I’d love to see it but I bought the cast album and it’s amazing ! Very broadway-like I feel the need to spread this musical whenever I can !!!
Les Misérables (french concept album 1980 & 1991 revival cast) : if I’m honest it’s my all time favourite musical (did I mention I love Hugo’s work ?). The french concept album is pretty interesting and otherwise known as Disco!Jolras (you’ll see why). The 1991 revival cast contains all the new songs added in 1985 for the West End production and the new arrangements. I really love the 1991 revival production and I’m so pissed it did not receive the success it deserved. The 1991 cast has my favourite Marius, Jérôme Pradon, he’s the cutest and Julien Combey as Enjolras is so convincing and good ! Great Javert too !!
Mamma Mia! (x) : don’t judge me but I love this musical, I’m always a sucker for ABBA and the french version was actually great ?? I think the translations were actually pretty good and Jérôme Pradon’s in it so that’s a plus. (I have the french cast album if you want, send me an IM and I’ll give you a link to dl it).
Special mention to Le Bal des Vampires (TDV) and La Belle et La Bête as well that have good french productions.

French pop star France Gall dies at 70
PARIS (Reuters) – Singer France Gall, whose hits — including a Eurovision triumph with Serge Gainsbourg — made her an icon of French pop music, has died aged 70.
Gall passed away on Sunday after a two-year struggle against cancer, French media reported.
The news prompted tributes including from President Emmanuel Macron, who said on his Twitter account that “she leaves behind songs that are familiar to all French people and the example of a life devoted to others.”
Gall, whose father penned songs for French greats Edith Piaf and Charles Aznavour, rose to fame as a teenager with help from legendary singer and songwriter Gainsbourg.
They collaborated for the hit “Poupee de cire, poupee de son” — generally translated as “Wax doll, rag doll” — which won the Eurovision Song Contest for Luxembourg in 1965.
Their relationship soured, however, after another hit, “Les Sucettes” (“Lollipops”), embarrassed the young Gall as she failed to grasp the sexual references in the lyrics of the notoriously provocative Gainsbourg.
Gall revived her career in the 1970s with Michel Berger, another influential French songwriter whom she later married and with whom she had two children.
In addition to a string of chart successes into the 1980s, she also took a turn on stage in the hit French-Canadian musical Starmania.
She halted her career in the 1990s following the deaths of Berger and her daughter Pauline.
Gall is the second French 1960s icon to have died in the past two months, following the death of rock singer Johnny Hallyday, dubbed “the French Elvis”, in early December.

France Castel’s Farewell
On June 4, France Castel had a long interview on ICI Radio Canada, where she confessed that like Maurane she found it challenging to separate herself from the character. She was the same age as her character Stella Spotlight and experienced similar addiction issues. So, the lines “Ce soir j’irai voir à travers le miroir si la vie est éternelle” reflected her real self.
France Castel is 80 and for this broadcast she recorded “Les adieux d'un sex symbol” with her friend Louise Forestier among others on the back vocals.
It’s a true sincere and mature farewell, as France Castel is planning to retire.
Starmania section is between 1hr 15 min and 1 ht 40 minutes -
❤️ it is very courageous to be so honest and sincere about challenging situation in life. I hope Starmania fans can treat these confessions with respect and without mockery. 🙏
