I really enjoy the whole parasitic fungus and host having a Symbiotic relationship not only in the sense of nutrients in return for an expanded physcial capacity and memory but also in the sense of the host teaching the fungus and treating it as if it is a child that needs to be taught. Like if you've ever read 'What Moves the Dead' by tkingfisher or hell the story its based off by Edgar Allan poe, 'The Fall of the House of Usher', the relationship Madeline has with the parasitic fungus is interesting because she treats it like a child, teaching it how to speak and read and referring to it with the Gallacian pronouns used for children. I just think its interesting and I wish more media depicted the parasite/host relationship in this way. It's also interesting that this fungi has the capacity and intelligence to learn at all, although some of it is indeed based in reality given the fact that many fungi do have some form of short term memory. It's almost motherly the way Madeline treats her parasite, and if the book by T. kingfisher was longer, they could have expanded on this even more which would have been so interesting.
Idk maybe this type of relationship is actually super common and it just flew over my head, but if it's so used, I guess its weird I barely hear people mentioning it.

Mushroom Horror
Lately, I’ve been noticing a rising trend in fungal-themed horror novels, or what some corners of the internet are starting to dub “sporror.” (Get it? Like spores?) Mushrooms and their kin have many characteristics that lend themselves quite well to horror. For one thing, there’s still so much that we don’t know about these organisms—only in the last decade or so have we started to understand the…

ELEMENTAL REALM / ECLECTIC CHAMBER OCS!
Tumblr media
Hiiiiiii first art post I'm sharing publicly! This has been a month in the making but it's so worth it. These are a handful of characters in my OC universe, the Elemental Realm! AKA the Eclectic Chamber, I'm currently going through a name change from elemental realm to eclectic chamber. Don't worry about that.
Italicized names mean those are placeholders while I still try to come up with a better name. For some, those placeholders have been there for years :P whoops
These comprise pretty much all the significant characters I have (with a guideline of appearing in at least 2 stories although there's some exceptions). There are roughly another 100 or so characters that I opted not to include because they're either not as significant, I don't have an interesting design for them, or I just didn't feel like it. Full namedrop behind the read more in case you're interested! Maybe I'll do a part 2 of this in a year or so, who knows.
If there's any characters here that tickle your fancy, shoot an ask or a comment for me to infodump about them! Quality of infodumping may vary, especially considering I still have to step around spoilers and whatnot, but I'm very interested to show you how these characters have been sculpted in my head over these past several years. (Also, I will be revealing some info about the story ideas I already have in mind for the Elemental Realm soon, so stay tuned for that!)
Uhhhhhh yeah. Hopefully I'm not forgetting to say anything important. I really love what I made lol I hope I can finally start moving this universe outside of my head and into the world ^_^

What Moves the Dead
by T. Kingfisher
My first completely read book of 2024 (and the last 6 months, but that's beside the point 😆)
As a disclaimer, I am unfamiliar with The Fall of the House of Usher by Edger Allen Poe. I am planning to go over it today after had finished this book. So, I can't really comment on the similarities or conflicts of the two stories.
I became interested in this book because I've enjoyed The Twisted Ones by T. Kingfisher immensely. After starting reading, you can definitely tell it's her work (compliment of endearment). Kingfisher has a tendency for unique female MCs with a somewhat quirky outlook on life. I enjoy these characters since they are more relatable to me. I'm a sarcastic smart-ass with humor hiding my trauma, and I enjoy that there's other smart-ass women cracking jokes in the face of eldritch horrors. Which is what Easton, our MC, does often.
There are a few interesting notes about Easton's backstory; it explains their childhood with the Ushers, and it explains where she is in life now, including her pronouns. Also, the pronouns of the country she came from, a fictional place of Gallicia (not the Galicia of Spain), that is a tiny, poor country in the middle of Europe. In a way, I felt like these explanations were long-winded and possibly even unneeded. But I ended up appreciating the interesting seven different pronouns (va/van/ka/kan and others) when it came down to referring to the tarn (lake).
Honestly, I believe the "sporror" of the book is great. The always present knowledge and visuals of spores and fungi made me feel intrigued in the beginning but claustrophobic by the end. It was wild to witness something every day "normal" turn into a paranormal entity. The subtle loneliness of a young woman turning into a deadly obsession was definitely eye-opening.
My only true critique is that I felt it wasn't as eventful as I was hoping it would be. I don't know exactly what I was expecting, but it felt lacking in some way. There is What Feasts at Night, the sequel, coming out in February, which is something to look forward to.

New Film Genre "Sporror" Combines Sports and Horror
New Film Genre “Sporror” Combines Sports and Horror
As the success of movies like Jordan Peele’s Get Out proves, the horror genre is still as vital as ever in 2017. The same can’t be said, however, of sports movies these days. While the ’90s was a golden age of relatively small scale movies about the struggles and successes of sports teams, the evolution of Hollywood’s business model (in which big budget movies increasingly rely on international…
