Before Peter could make an awkward attempt to respond, Michelle stepped out of the truck. Sporting the yellow dress, she glared at Ned with annoyance and disappointment.
Peter’s eyes seemed to light up a little and he quickly rose to his feet. Ned did the same then opened and closed his mouth a few times before sealing his lips and figuring it best to let his sister talk first.
“Thanks, Ned,” she spat, “I look like a fuckin’ dandelion.”
“That’s not so bad,” Ned attempted to offer, “dandelions are nice flowers.”
“No, they’re weeds,” she disagreed sharply, “they’re ugly, annoying weeds.”
Ned opened his mouth to reply but was quickly interrupted by Peter.
“Daisy,” he rasped in disagreement.
Michelle’s expression softened and she met his gaze, “what’s that?”
Peter nodded towards a patch of grass that had managed to grow next to the unkept road. In the patch stood two yellow gerbera daisies. Both were rather large (by daisy standards), but one stood tall and proud while the other was beginning to shrivel up and hunch over.
He knelt down beside them and, with trembling hands, he plucked the healthier of the two flowers away from its stem, being as gentle as he could manage. He stared at the bold yet delicate petals of the daisy for a few moments, examining it for flaws and smiling softly to himself when he found none.
Michelle watched him curiously while Ned was far more wary. As Peter rose began walking back to his acquaintances, Michelle found herself suppressing a tiny smile.
By the gentle grin on his lips, she could tell he was proud of the flower he held and he was excited for whatever he chose to do with it. In the moments that followed, Michelle knew without a doubt that the boy before her was an awkward, yet lovable, one with a kind heart. He was the type of boy who would make her smile when she was upset and would help her relax her shoulders when they were tense. She could imagine—and practically feel— his cool hands cupping her face as she cried and his lips pressed lightly against her cheek just to make her blush. She could see a future of brought smiles, goofy laughs, tears shed, arguments lost and won— and it all seemed perfect. But also absurdly and disgustingly far-fetched.
She was snapped out of her trance as she noticed Peter standing in front of her. He reached for her hair then paused and locked eyes with her, as if asking for permission. She nodded and muttered for him to go ahead.
Still smiling gently, he reached forward and tucked her curls behind her ear. Then, he gently slid the daisy into her hair. He picked off a little leaf that tickled her ear then made a few little adjustments to the flower to position it just right, so it pinned back her hair like a hair clip.
Peter stepped away, satisfied with his work. Then, he stuffed his hands in his pockets and simpered sweetly, making a thin and sheepish grin press onto Michelle’s lips. She felt her cheeks heat up and a sense of faint excitement tugged at her stomach. There wasn’t even a need for her to say thank you, her eyes did it all and more.
“What in Sam hell jus’ happened?” Ned broke the moment, his voice thick with confusion and disapproval.
