A Love Letter to Firefly Music Festival

Dear Firefly,

You have always been exceptional, but this year you were extra special. Firefly, this year, you were perfectly planned to align with the first weekend of Autumn. And, though not typical of you, it was clear that your covid-thrusted autumnal version made itself right at home in the hearts of nearly everyone in attendance.

You magically brought a crisp and exuberant chill to the Friday night air. You comfortably encouraged music fans of all ages to bear smiles as they skipped around in their hoodies and combat boots. You enthusiastically lured artists who had performed on stage earlier in the day to join their fellow friends on stage at night, bringing unity to the woods in a camp-like fashion.

Everything about our night with you was enchanting. You allowed for Avril Lavigne to belt her heart out as she brought what seemed like the whole festival back to the 2000s. You called for Weezer to perform hit after hit after hit, prompting the audience to dance for the entirety of their one-hour set.

You gave My Chemical Romance the stage to wow their suspecting roadies into a trance while quickly turning some unsuspecting attendees into their number one fans. You set Zedd up perfectly to close out the night from behind his castle-like workspace, hypnotically keeping everyone up past their bedtimes.

Your “Bazaar” offered fans a respite from the booming speakers, selling everything from handcrafted jewelry to uniquely printed pants. Your “Nook” lured individuals into its corner to dance, sit, and stand alongside glowing mushrooms. And your “Thicket” called for the adventurous to dance, in what passersby thought was silence, to music in their headphones. Firefly, we are already getting ready for next year.

Things Are Always Better with Jesse McCartney

It has been about a decade since PopEntertainment.com had the privilege of catching up with singer/songwriter/actor and, of course, self-proclaimed grill master Jesse McCartney. Last time we got the chance to hang out, McCartney had just released his third solo album Departure, which included the smash hit “Leavin’.” He had also recently written Leona Lewis’ top single “Bleeding Love,” which made him a mint as a songwriter.

In recent years, McCartney has worked hard to build up his acting career. Nearly ten years later, Jesse is back in the music game. His brand-new hit song, “Better with You,” was just released, and McCartney has proven that he is still here and isn't going anywhere anytime soon.

McCartney is back in the spotlight after a much-deserved four-year hiatus after releasing his last album in 2014, In Technicolor. He took that time to spend quality time with his girlfriend, Katie Peterson, take walks and Instagram pics with his precious pooch, Bailey, and take up a new hobby; grilling and smoking meat! Sounds like the perfect way to live life if you ask us!

Although he took some time off, that doesn't mean his creative juices weren't still flowing. Jesse attended a songwriting "camp" in Nashville, and also kept his acting skills up to date with his hysterical alter-egos "Hansel" and "Gentle Jerry," who can be found on his Facebook page. And trust us, you definitely want to see it.

With his new song release, Jesse's fans are absolutely thrilled to see him back in action. "Better with You" has the feel of his classic "Beautiful Soul". There is never a dull or boring moment in the song, and just like his other songs, this one can play on repeat. It’s safe to say that "Better with You" just tugs at some heart strings. Makes us eagerly wonder something. Will Jesse McCartney be releasing anything else this year?

It’s awesome to be able to catch up with you again!

Oh, yeah cool. You as well!

You’re the kind of artist that has the most loyal fans. You have changed so much throughout the years (always positively, might I add) and you still have the same fans. Going back to your Dream Street days, to now, how are you able to maintain such a strong, loyal fanbase?

I mean, I don't know. I wish I had the answer to that, but it’s really nice. I’ve been doing this, as you know, for a really long time, and especially now with this project I didn't really know how the fans would react being away for a few years, and they were just remarkably THERE. They were just there and super vocal, like "we can wait!" "what’s been taking so long?" why have you been away for so long without any music?". So, I mean, I don't know what it is, I'm just so grateful that they have been there for so long and that they show up because it allows me to do what I love!

Well with that being said, were you surprised by the response you got with your new release "Better with You"?

I thought that they would like this song. I really felt strongly about this new record "Better with You". I felt like there was something about it that I kind of thought might tickle the nostalgic bone. It has a sort of throwback reminiscent feel to the early days of my music so that was sort of intentional, but still, I mean, you never know. You never know what’s going to happen when you release new music. You know, people tell you "oh this is going to be a hit, this is going to be a hit, this is amazing!" and then it’s not, and vice versa. So, I mean, you just never know. The really cool thing is now with social media, I get an immediate response, like, "this song sucks!" Or " this song is amazing!" It’s like immediate feedback.

Yes, I can totally see that. Social media is a blessing and a curse these days! So, in reference to that feel good, nostalgic sound of "Better with You", and going back to "Beautiful Soul", but more so "Better with You", I saw you were at a songwriting camp in Nashville during your time off?

Yeah, I was.

Well, could that possibly mean that we are going to get some country from you ever? You know how some artists these days are doing that cross-over, like Maren Morris was country and tried out some pop? Do you think it might happen? I ask because "Better with You" has that little touch of a country feel to it.

It’s a fair question, but probably not. I mean, I never say never. The songs that I wrote were definitely very country driven, and not something that you'll hear on this project that I'm doing right now, this year, BUT, I do love the songs. SO, if they don't get recorded by any big country artists, I mean, maybe. You know, maybe I could do like a pop-country thing with another country female singer, and maybe we could do a duet. I don't know, we've talked about it, but right now I think I'm just going to stick with these four or five songs that I have for this year and see where that goes.

Okay, so you have more coming out then?

Definitely have more coming out. That’s exciting! Do you have any collaborations with anybody in these upcoming songs? No collabs right now. It’s just I have five songs, well four or five songs, that I love, and there’s really no rules anymore. I thought eventually I'd put out an entire LP or even an EP, but with the success of "Better With You" and the way it has this momentum behind it right now, I think that I'm going to wait a couple more months and release another song and then maybe after that release another song, and then maybe do an EP or a whole album, I don't know. But definitely at this point I have four or five songs that I'll be releasing this year.

That really is exciting! I have a feeling this will be a great year for you. I know I am, but I am sure your other fans are probably thrilled about your return to music. One last question, which you can totally say no to, you want to show me Hansel in person?

(In German accent) Hansel? Yes of course, Baby! We’re going to go to the club and have some Bison Beer! (Laughing)

That was awesome! Alright, well it was awesome catching up with you again! Good luck this year, and I can’t wait to hear what else you have up your sleeve!

Das 8. OldiesButGoldies ist bereits Geschichte. Über 70 Oldtimer und rund 250 Auto-Interessierte besuchten gestern den von der Bott Schweiz AG organisierten Anlass. Das

Würenlinger Oldtimer-Feuerwehrauto mit Belegschaft sorgte für Speiss und Trank. Präziosen wie der Sauber C5 und ein originaler Volvo Polizeieinsatzwagen von 1968 schmückten den Platz. Vertreter der FABAM und von der URquattro IG sowie die drive your passion Gruppe war vor Ort. Wie bereits gewohnt, durfte jeder Teilnehmer ein Foto aus der bott Fotobox schiessen und als Andenken mit nach Hause nehmen.

Allen Teilnehmern und Besuchern wie auch der Feuerwehrtruppe, der Regionalzeitung Botschaft in Vertretung durch Helmut, Erich (Fotobox) und dem Bott Mitarbeitern die den Parkdienst leiteten ein grosses Dankeschön zum gelungenen Abend. Firefly Survival Guide

You see the lineup. You text your friends. You buy your tickets. Then you wait and wait. After months and months of waiting, the day has finally come: Firefly. You excitedly throw your bag into the car next to your two friends, who are in the back seat, and then you’re all off. It didn’t hit you that though you had an excess amount of time to plan for the occasion, you didn’t really plan at all. You spent most of your time picking out the outfits you were going to wear to the festival and put the essentials and necessities on the side burner. Who cares though? It’s the Woodlands, it’ll be awesome anyway – with or without essentials. This is true, the Woodlands never fail, but I am here to help the awesomeness become even more awesome. I have been through it all; rain, thunder, excessive heat, and low temperatures. And I am here to say that this is very, very important to maximize your Firefly experience. So, without further ado, the guide:

General admission grants you basic access to the festival. You can get a one-day pass or a four-day pass. The majority of people attending the festival have general admission. This ticket gives you access to everything you think Firefly would be. It is the basic festival experience that you have been dreaming about. You have access to all of the amazing food trucks and vendors as well as well as stages to watch your favorite artists perform. Keep in mind that this ticket does not include your camping pass.

VIP is just like general admission but with many extra amazing perks. VIP has exclusive closed-off areas with shade from the sun, fun giant board games like checkers, foosball, boules and ping pong. You can take a break from walking around to just sit and sip on a cold bottle of water (the water bottles are free with VIP!). In the VIP areas there are air-conditioned bathrooms. These bathrooms are a dramatic improvement to the bathrooms that general admission grants you. You even are able to access exclusive viewing areas that extremely close to the stage. You can get to an act 30 minutes in and still get a good spot. This way you can stay away from the insane crowds and don't have to wait for your favorite artists to perform for hours!

Last but not least – super VIP! Super VIP includes access to all of the general admission areas and the VIP areas. It also grants you access to super VIP viewing areas. These areas are just like the VIP areas but in front. These viewing areas go right up to the stage. Super VIP also includes access into the artist lounge. This tent has snacks, free water bottles, air conditioning, free open bar, plenty of comfy couches, outlets to charge your phone and a variety of arcade games.

When you have wifi (so that you don’t waste data and make your cell phone bill extremely high) you will want to download the Firefly app. One of the MOST important parts about this handy app is the ability to sort out your schedule. You are able to select the artists that you want to see and then the app will organize which artists you need to see at which time. This gets rid of the headache of you constantly checking the lineup and creating a schedule on your own. Personally speaking, I have missed an artist (or two or three) because I did not use the app at first and did not make a correct schedule for myself. Trust me, you do not want to miss an artist. You do not want to be that person.

Assuming that you have packed the basic items such as underwear and other undergarments, when you’re looking over the clothes that you have packed, you will want to make sure you have a few other certain items. Make sure to pack a sweatshirt of some sort. Campers are not immune to getting cold at night, and you will be happy that you have a cozy sweatshirt to throw on when you’re trying to get a little sleep in. Along with the sweatshirt, pack some cozy socks. You’ll thank me later. When you are up and at ‘em at the festival, after your nice, warm, cozy sleep, you will want to have something to hold your belongings in. This is where I suggest a backpack. Nobody wants to carry about their wallet, water bottle, phone, cough drops, and sunglasses in their hands while listening to Mumford and Sons. A lightweight backpack will hold all of these items (and more) so that you can watch the performers worry free.

I gave away the next few items that you will want to pack; sunglasses, a water bottle, and cough drops. Not just one pair of sunglasses, but two. I know you’re probably thinking that two pairs of sunglasses is quite ridiculous, but you’d be surprised. Both my sister and I lost a pair of sunglasses at the festival. Squinting the whole time is not enjoyable. When I say water bottle, I mean a nicely sized one. The water stations inside the festival accumulate a line, and being that waiting in line is not fun, a larger water bottle will prevent this. Yes, you did see that I have included cough drops. I include this because when you’re done watching your favorite band perform on stage and your throat is burning, you will wish you had some cough drops.

Listen, we are in the age of technology and though we do not like to admit it, many of us are very reliant on our phones. Having a dead phone and missing an opportunity to record your favorite song or post a snapchat in your story is a downer. Besides those two reasons, you do not want to be that one friend who gets separated from their group and who does not have a way of contacting their friends. This is when I say pack a portable charger, or four. Charging stations are scattered about the festival, but that is an unneeded hassle and your phone will probably die by the time you get to one.

If you are camping, a tent would be useful to pack. Remember that a camping pass is separate from your ticket into the festival. If you are looking for an all-around Firefly experience, camping is the way to go. Forgetting a tent would be the equivalent to the end of the world (unless you don’t mind sleeping in your car for 4 days). Jokes aside, I have learned from my previous Firefly experience that I need much more than a tent and a few blankets to have a great camping experience.

So you check the forecast everyday two weeks prior to Firefly and the weather looks beautiful. Until you wake up in your tent the first night with rain on your head and everything is soaked. A rain cover for your tent – or even a tarp – is necessary. The weather can be so unpredictable and you don’t want something as small as rain to ruin your whole time. It rained the first night that I was there, and I was very thankful that I had put the rainfly on my tent. Another essential item that you may want to include on your packing list is a trash bag. You may be thinking “oh duh for the trash!”. Well yes and no. You will want to have a trash bag inside your tent to put your empty water bottles or chip bags but may also want to stick one in your backpack. Trash Bags can double as ponchos and somewhere to sit on the ground or maybe even rest your head.

Now that we have made sure to include a tent and a rain fly for the tent, we need to make sure to include what should go IN the tent. Prior to this year I didn’t put much in the tent besides blankets and pillows. It was not very comfortable and I did not look forward to going to sleep. This year I learned from my mistakes and made sure to amp up my sleeping situation by bringing an air mattress. I actually looked forward to going to bed after a long day of music, and slept like a baby. If you bring an air mattress (you should), a pump would be helpful as well. I bought a pump that plugged into my car and it worked wonders. One of the many joys of camping is that there are no outlets. Which means no air-conditioning. Which means no fans. Or does it? I recently found out that battery powered fans are a thing. A very wonderful thing. They are portable and perfect for camping.

The nights are brisk, but the mornings are quite hot, so a battery powered fan is great to keep in your tent. This way, when you want to relax in your tent, on your air mattress, at 10am, a fan will keep you cool.

The campsite and tent will be your home away from home for the next four days. You’ll want it to be nice and cozy. Bringing chairs along with you to Firefly will be a very nice addition to your campsite. You can either put the chairs in your tent (if it is big enough), or outside your tent, or both. This way you will be able to sit down and lounge, since you’d be on your feet so much inside the festival. I also suggest that you bring a canopy. You will want to seek shade and tents are hot inside, so having a canopy will provide shade as well as a breeze.

Speaking about cozy… The first year we attended Firefly, we did not bring a blow-up mattress. This was a huge mistake. After walking and dancing around ALL day, you will want to have a soft place to rest. Although they can take up a lot of precious room in your car, it will be worth it. Trust us.

And speaking about sleep… you may want to pack a pair of ear plugs. Getting some shut eye isn’t the easiest task to do when you’re in a camp ground filled with music fans just like yourself. There is no bedtime and there is no “quiet hour,” not to mention your tent may be pretty close to a stage which isn't helpful for sleep. Some acts get done around 3AM! So if you are like myself and may want to go to bed kind of early (according to music festival time) a pair of earplugs will be necessary.

For the last addition to the survival guide: a small grill and a water boiler. You may not want to buy all of your food inside the festival, and in this event, the two items mentioned above will come in handy. If you have a grill you can easily and quickly grill hotdogs or hamburgers or whatever your heart desires. With a water boiler you can make oatmeal and ramen noodles. Then boom, you have all of your meals made.

Now all you have to do is go buy your tickets for next year and start planning! Whether you choose the basic Firefly experience or the super VIP, you will have an amazing experience that you will never forget. Ready, set… Firefly!

Capital Gains Tax Increase Could Hurt Home Sellers In Hot Markets| Investor's Business Daily

President Biden’s proposed near doubling to 39.6% of the top long-term capital gains tax rate could wallop certain homeowners.

The tax boost is supposedly intended to be aimed at just millionaire and billionaires — taxpayers with more than $1 million of income.

But it could unintentionally impact middle-income homeowners as well, say personal finance experts.

Here’s how: Huge run-ups in home prices in many markets could lift the income of many middle-income homeowners. It’s a risk to those who sell their residences above the $1 million threshold. And talk about bad timing. This might happen as many downsize for retirement.

Capital Gains Tax: Higher Rate, Worst Time

That could make them subject to the 39.6% capital gains rate just as they near the moment when they will lose much of their earning potential and just as they are looking for one final way to pump up the nest egg that will provide the bulk of their retirement income.

Nationwide, the number of homeowners whose homes have soared in value by more than $1 million is small. As of a year and a half ago when he crunched the numbers, “the people who bought at the trough of the market, eight or nine years ago and had since sold for a gain of over $1 million was maybe less than 1%,” said Sheharyar Bokhari, an economist for real estate brokerage Redfin (RDFN).

Similarly, people who still own homes that have appreciated in value by more than $1 million is also less than 1%, Bokhari says.

Hot Markets Hit Hardest

But in hot markets, that impact is magnified, Bokhari says. “In places like San Jose (California’s Silicon Valley), Los Angeles, Seattle, New York, San Francisco, there are lots of really expensive homes,” Bokhari said. “Probably Boston too, especially those people who bought in (at market lows) after the financial crisis. We’ve seen a lot of home-price appreciation.”

Some Gains Left Out

Still, some existing rules that exclude a portion of gains from income calculations shield some home sellers from the proposed new top capital gains tax rate.

That current law lets you exclude up to $250,000 of that gain from your income, says Tim Speiss, partner in EisnerAmper’s Personal Wealth Advisory Group, who follows tax legislation. Married joint filers can exclude up to $500,000. So far, Biden has not proposed changing those exclusions, Speiss says.

So you would not trigger the $1 million threshold for the new higher cap gains rate unless your net income, after those exclusions, topped $1 million.

Hot Markets Most Vulnerable To Capital Gains Tax

Generally, that’s more likely to occur only in those hottest housing markets, says Lawrence Yun, chief economist for the National Association of Realtors.

“A good number of homeowners will be insulated from the proposed higher capital gains tax rate because those allowances (of $250,000 and $500,000) are quite sizable,” Yun said. “But in recent years, we’ve had prices rise significantly, so high-cost areas like (Seattle) Washington and L.A., where housing has been super hot for multiple, consecutive years, people will potentially see the new potential capital gains tax on their home-sale gains.”

Where Home Sales Are Likeliest To Trigger Capital Gains Tax?

A home sale is most likely to trigger capital gains tax liability on high priced homes. Hot markets are where lots of homes are at nose-bleed heights.

How hot are some markets? The median value of homes is $1.39 million in metropolitan San Francisco, according to a recent Redfin report. And it is more than more than $1.2 million dollars in metro San Jose.

))Median values are more than $821,000 around Oakland, Calif., $768,000 in metro Anaheim, Calif. and $687,000 around Los Angeles. Median prices top $658,000 in metro San Diego and $619,000 in the Seattle area.

They exceed $582,000 in metro New York City, $516,000 in Nassau County on New York’s Long Island and $554,000 in the Boston area.

Higher Capital Gains Tax Could Slow Housing Rebound

Homeowners who fear they may be subject to the new, higher capital gains rate may decide not to sell, Yun says. That could fuel a growing housing shortage. And it could buoy prices for inventory that does go to market, he adds.

In turn, that could hamper the housing sector recovery, Yun says.

The long-term capital gains tax applies to stocks and bonds sold in 2021, for example, after being owned more than 12 months.

The current 20% rate applies to single filers whose yearly income is $445,851 or more. It applies to married joint filers whose income is $501,601 or more.

This other IBD report includes tables that show additional 2020 and 2021 capital gains tax rates and brackets.

Ordinary income tax rates apply to capital gains on assets sold after being held in less than a year.

Additional Tax

In addition to the 39.6% capital gains tax rate, taxpayers would be subject to the current 3.8% net investment income tax (NIIT), for a combined total of 43.4%.

The 3.8% surtax, which helps fund the Affordable Care Act, widely known as Obamacare, is also assessed in addition to today’s top rate of 20% for taxpayers whose income is high enough.

However, for homeowners, capital gain from the sale of a home is subject to the 3.8% surtax only if the home is rental property, Speiss says. In addition, net rental income itself is subject to the surtax.

Proposed Change To 1031 Exchanges

Biden has proposed changing another tax rule that could make more of a home owner’s profit on the same of a home vulnerable to capital gains tax. He says he wants Congress to eliminate a key part of what’s known as a 1031 exchange.

A 1031 exchange lets a property owner avoid capital gains tax and depreciation-recapture tax when he or she uses proceeds from the sale of a property to buy another within 180 days. Biden wants to eliminate that legal loop hole when the capital gain is more than $500,000.

Gains that are smaller would still be allowed to dodge cap-gains tax and depreciation-recapture tax.

The 1031 exchange rule involves lots of fine print.
