bc let’s be fcking honest, things were running pretty and kinda fast in that finale, but the amount of emotions felt before, A also being Cruz’s first love after so much time ?! That’s a lot, also the actresses had so much chemistry it was literally insane…
So yeah Manifesting all that shit
a hell of a ride but it was a masterpiece, Sheridan hope u won’t disappoint if we’ll ever see u again

Special Ops: Lioness - Behind The Story | 1x08
Laysla: “Cruz really doesn’t wanna do this. This is somebody she is completely in love with and someone’s heart she’s about to break, and I think Cruz just feels like absolute trash.”
Stephanie: “They kind of have to end their relationship and go back into their real worlds. But they have this juxtaposition between betrayal & loyalty and who are you loyal to, your own heart or the obligations that you have to fulfill?”

Can you imagine the horror Cruz felt the past few days, every day, unexpectedly falling deeply in love with this beautiful, lovely and kind woman and then the knowledge that she has to kill her father, actually take the life from someone this kind girl who loves her cares about. And having this conflict, this horror eating at her, corrupting her love for Aaliyah until she couldn't touch her without feeling all the guilt and disgust at herself. Now she also has regret to live with.
Oh, anon, I've been thinking of nothing else!
I was actually afraid after we left Cruz watching Joe's supercut of Amrohi's biggest hits, ep 8 would have her buying into the mission so it'd be more of an action oriented spy thing with Aaliyah only eventually adding a last minute conflict, but that wasn't the case at all! My girl remained cold to it and it stayed only a mission she had to carry out, nothing she believed in.
What's really struck me is that despite Joe and Kaitlyn's years more of experience and close dealings with the politicians and businessmen who showed this was all a game, Cruz saw the truth of the situation more clearly than they ever did, just by listening to Aaliyah. She was able to contrast both versions she was hearing and extract the reality in a way they never could because they never cared about the other side.
Cruz is terrible for undercover work because she treats her target like a human. That's really what it comes down to, right. She saw Aaliyah as a person and valued what she thought and felt and now here we are. And the worst thing for her is that Aaliyah didn't get through to her by being a funny, charming smokeshow (or not JUST that, lol), she was kind and vulnerable. Cruz may be bad at being a spy but she's a great soldier (as we saw in that kitchen, whew) and Aaliyah's exactly the kind of person she wants to protect. Credit to the show for letting us see how agonizing it was for Cruz to go against all her morals and instincts and everything in her to do this mission. The fact that she fell in love, needed and was needed by this one person, the tragedy of it all.
And actually, credit to Laysla De Oliveira as well! I've been praising Stephanie Nur a lot so far and as I mentioned, no shade to Laysla, but Cruz has been quite opaque and hard to read, as intended, I'm sure, she's supposed to be this tough marine AND is playing an undercover role, she mostly just reflected what Aaliyah threw at her. But these last two eps, gosh, she really brought ALL these additional layers. It really sold the romance, like, first, she was NOT faking in those last two eps, but just how guilty and anxious she was, and the anger and self-loathing at the end? Even that moment on the balcony looking out where she was all rueful, it was more subtle but still so expressive:

Honestly, I've actually really loved Aaliyah's character and was waiting for the finale to see if she lived so I could add her to my fave characters list, because I'm not gonna add a character who's built up just for an extra tragic death, but I've ended up adding BOTH. The strength of character Cruz showed in the end to realize and accept what's she'd done, and the kindness in believing both Aaliyah and even her dad deserved more grace, I found myself genuinely loving her by the end.
I really can't tell if she's going to return, but I hope so, she deserves more closure than that, they both do.

In the scene where Aaliyah introduces Cruz to her mother, did anyone notice how she seemed nervous? She starts fidgeting with her engagement ring. Wish we got to see a little more of the beautiful henna on her hands. She doesn't seem to have a close relationship with anyone in her family, everything is cold and formal.
Ohhh, that's true! It's quite visible:

Kind of sucks that her mom was so rude then, given how nervous Aaliyah was.
I did notice Aaliyah doing that in another little scene where you could see the nerves working on her:

As for the henna, there was this look later:

It did make me wonder if Arab bridal henna isn't as involved as desi? Ours is like if you were wearing an elbow-length chainmail glove. :P
You know, I wish it had been a bit more apparent later on, during the kiss:

You do see this much here, but like... okay, the show doesn't ignore Aaliyah's background, certainly, but we see so much of her through a certain lens, in a bikini on the beach, clubbing, drinking, upscale NYC stores, it'd have been nice to see the juxtaposition of something nice from her culture with this particular side of her.
In fact, my friend wondered, when she was still watching the start, if the show would be brave enough to show something gay while they were doing hijab, and you know, I'd have loved to see even just a simple kiss. I know the optics would be a bit eyebrow-raising, especially for the reach a show like this gets (compared to, for example, The Bold Type), but stilllll.

Unwell.
And another anon:
God damn Lioness had me going and then that. I clowned myself.
And another anon:
That was heartbreaking..... Cruz was used, Joe was used too to be very honest, they're all just pawns in The Game. All it will do is exactly like Cruz said, make another generation of terrorists, just because the rich wanted some more money. Aaliyah just sitting there - I wonder what's going on in her mind. I wish they'd been together one last time, if I was Cruz I'd wanted that for myself and Aaliyah was so willing because she wanted it for herself too. It's all so sad and nobody wins. They survived but at what cost? Aaliyah doesn't even know Cruz's real name, just her as Zara, a kind and honest friend. Does she know it was "Zara" that killed her father and fiancé? She will I guess. Is season 2 going to happen and would they continue with the story or just invent a new one? Would Aaliyah hate Cruz? Would Cruz come back to make amends (can she even?) or would she be so guilt-ridden she punishes herself instead?
Haha, yeahhhhh.
First: I was wrong. Have to say that up front, I was wrong about the ending! I really thought there'd be no way Cruz would be escaping at the end while Aaliyah was fine behind, I thought they simply wouldn't be able to resist having her die.
I should probably really do something about my pessimism because at first, I was operating on the assumption that Aaliyah was left alive to be part of next season and since that "creating the next generation of terrorists" line was immediately followed by a jump to Aaliyah putting together the pieces, I was like, oh, she's going to be the next big bad, so they've only delayed her death while also making her a terrorist. Hah, you can imagine how I felt about THAT.
But reading other people's reactions, I guess I only assumed this same set of characters would return and it might be a different mission led by Joe, since Zoe Saldana has indicated she's returning (if there's another season), or just, it could be something still continuing this overall mission...? I dunno, it felt kind of not only complete, but unnecessary? It all felt kind of unnecessary and pointless at the end, so then it's like, what's the point of the show at all? Like you said, third anon, it's just game pieces being moved around, how are we going to take the next thing seriously? Do it or not, it's just dollar signs to some people. Actually, I did admire that a bit, tbh, acknowledging for this particular audience what the war on terror really is, and also how so many US actions actually just create more terrorists.
Anyway, if this is the end of Cruz and Aaliyah's story, that is for SURE heartbreaking. One of the things I've always hated about BYGs it that they aside from a usually undeserved and too-early death for the character, it's also cutting short their story onsreen, and well, this might be another way of doing that. I'm not even sure what'll happen to Aaliyah, her family will blame her and limit her even more, and she was already feeling so trapped and as if nobody cared about her. And the one person who does, who really, really does, she'll think was just using her.
Tbh, I admire Cruz more for not going there that last time even as much as she wanted to, because with everything, that wouldn't have been fair to Aaliyah, to have the woman she slept with just minutes ago killing her dad and running off. In fact, I wonder, with how obvious Cruz was being, if Aaliyah will eventually realize at least some of it was real for her. She'll find out a lot about her, anyway, since Ehsan left it on his computer before running off.
My ultimate feelings about this really depend on how the next season's planned to go. Is this truly it for these two? Then I'm not sure I hate that, if it's left to our imagination what might happen, because I just don't think the Cruz we've seen wouldn't at least try to reach out to her. I could see her nobly staying away if it's what would help Aaliyah, but as it is, Aaliyah's stuck in a pretty tough spot!
But still, this IS better than a BYG to me because story has at least the potential to continue, one way or another. Deaths are so final. This reminds me of the s2 finale and hiatus for The 100, which, ignore what happened in s3, lol, but letting Lexa leave and then the fandom waiting to hear if she'd return. Both still alive, there are a lot of ways to come back from that.
