_thinkMake Week 1 Movement Through Studio and Mental Mapping
The first task we completed was thinking about the texts we had just read, and using various pencils, crayons and other utensils to draw images and make marks that represented the texts. The cohort was split into two, and made a drawing each.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The second task we completed was mapping the studio, with our eyes closed, after a 2 minute period of looking around and taking as much in with all of our senses. Once we started drawing, we relied on the rest of our senses, predominantly our hearing, to create a diagram which represented the space further than a simple plan would do.
My plan, pictured below, included the physical furniture in the room, as well as where sun came through, the noises of cars out on the road as well as noises from my coursemates while they were drawing. I used circles to mark where my coursemates were sat so that I could reference noises near each of these marks.

The third task we completed combined the two previous activities. We were tasked with creating a sort of 'dance' around the studio, that represented both the themes from the texts that we had discussed, as well as using our knowledge of the studio space and designing movements through and across the space that maybe weren't the typical or expected movement. The map below details the movements we made, and each colour represents a different person within the group.

Voyager
Tomorrow is the day that Apple Vision Pro becomes available, and today, Apple announced over 600 new apps built for it. As Apple typically does, they seeded certain companies with advance units, allowing them to develop and test on the device. Our design organization has a partnership with Apple, so we were one of those privileged companies. If you scroll down through the linked article, you'll see a short video clip of an app called Voyager by ForeFlight. ForeFlight is a Boeing subsidiary and the leading electronic flight bag provider for pilots in general, business, and military aviation.
No, I didn't get to work on the app, but one of my colleagues did. There were strict restrictions on who had access to the device, so I never got to see it. The app is a really interesting use of the technology—cool enough to be one of a handful featured by Apple.
Apps like Voyager by ForeFlight give spatial context to the coordinated nature of air traffic control, creating the ultimate playground for aviation enthusiasts…
The app combines satellite imagery, high-resolution terrain, and live traffic data to represent airports and the airspace above them.
Using a live traffic feed, Voyager depicts commercial and business jets, turboprops, piston aircraft, and helicopters flying near the selected airport, all shown at their actual to-scale altitudes with realistic pitch and bank. Users can select any aircraft to view detailed information about its flight plan and aircraft type, as well as live speed, altitude and heading information.
You can read and see more details about the Voyager app on ForeFlight's blog. It reminds me of the holographic tables in the first Avatar film.
It’s going to be a lot of fun seeing what else our teams cook up as we further explore the device.

Over the last 3 years I’ve been reading a 4 book series by Christopher Alexander called the Process of Creating Life. It’s a fascinating series that explores architectural design and the process of creating buildings that feel alive and encourage people to feel alive. The author has a unique vision of architecture and its one that has shaped my magical approach to working with spirits and connecting with the land and nature significantly.
Another book I read, Welcome to your World by Sarah Goldhagen, provided a similar perspective in terms of the design of the environment, and spoke to how you can make an environment more dynamic and alive through the purposeful design. Out of that book, I ended up creating ceiling art and studying the way an environment could be shaped by the placement of specific objects.

We created an interactive space exhibit for our first-term group project, which included a jacket strung on strings within the space allotted to us, which also had an extended trail that was weighed down and fixed to the floor and the sides of the space. Our topic of choice was to highlight the problems of marine litter in the oceans, inspired by the coastal town of Margate and also because on our explorations there we came across a lot of litter around the city. Followed by research to understand the problems of littering, and it getting into the ocean and the vast problem of Water Pollution .
The entire jacket was built out of plastic waste, including crisp packets, plastic bottles, bottle caps, packing material, etc., that we collected over the course of a few weeks from our own personal production of pollutants and a few friends.
When a person is in this space we wanted them to experience the struggles that marine life faces as a result of our throw-away culture. Through ingestion, entanglement, and habitat damage, plastics threaten marine life. In order to make people feel the suffocation marine animals experience because to the plastic waste that is encroaching on their habitat, we focused primarily on the emotions such as Entanglement, Bending, and Pain that should be elicited in a person when they wear the jacket.
This experiment relates to my field of research because it also induces an emotional reaction in the subject by placing them in a particular environment. In addition to making the environment difficult and uncomfortable, our goal was to make people aware of the potential effects of their daily actions.
