So I can now say I'm more or less back! This vouple months have been a whirlwind, and I have written nothing, nor worked on TSOU in a while
But I realised I miss it a lot, so I should really try to make some room between all my course work for it too! And I came back to so many questions in my inbox I'm a lil overwhelmed lol. Also I'm sorry to have missed out on Halloween stuff bc Halloween is one of my fave holiday, and this year I managed to get super sick and couldn't do shit.
On the good news side!! I'm learning Arabic which is fan-fucking-tastic for my story. Especially because now I have to write something from Souad's POV and I will have to do considerably less research since I just have my course work cover a portion of what I need!
So hi to y'all, and you are not getting rid of me again anytime soon (I hope)

Son ambiant de l'exposition "The transformation of silence"
"...l'artiste capte des éléments volatils qui se transforment en traces d'un passage, et simultanément deviennent une bande sonore machinale. Ces pulsations sonores se mélangent, résonnent, se superposent à la bande sonore du triptyque, et dessine ainsi des trajectoires à travers les terres et les expériences. " @marianna-liosi

the update was adorable and it was very fun to meet our lovely roommate (and hall mates!)
admittedly, this update just makes me more and more certain that running up that hill (and particularly the cover by loveless) reminds me of sam and g's routes?? perhaps not as intense (though i suppose college relationships do always feel very intense!), but,,, it might be because of that “you don't wanna hurt me, but see how deep the bullet lies” / “unaware i'm tearing you asunder.” + “tell me we both matter, or don't we?” / “it's you and me, won't be unhappy.”
Ahh glad you liked the update <3
For Sam: Running up that hill is perfect. *shivers deliciously*. Those lines! Such a "love you so much it hurts but can't walk away" situation.
P.S. I love the song (heard it for the first time on The Voice UK covered by Bo Bruce) and I've never heard the cover by Loveless before. Love how gritty/emotional it is. P.P.S. Would definitely welcome folks' song recs for the ROs especially to accompany my writing :P I think Mitski's two slow dancers was another rec for Sam.
For G: I think personally, I've always felt more of a peaceful, drifting, inevitable heartbreak vibe for the route, like a piece of driftwood floating further and further out to sea.
(But perhaps that's only because I'm writing from my own experience and that's just how it played out for me. I guess that's why watching Portrait of a Lady on Fire killed me so much (that end scene). For CT:OS though, I intend to write a possible happy ending to their romance.)
Here are the songs that really encapsulate the "we belong to different worlds and though they aligned for a brief moment, now it's time to say goodbye" mood that used to make me think of real-life G.
O Houria (Souad Massi) - basically the entire lyrics, but here's a selection (translated from French)
I would have liked to sing eternal tales for you and fallen suns and full moons, dark nights and on the shores of lakes where burned out angels sleep O Houria Love might well never cross our path again, O Houria Love might well be dead before I return. I would have liked to give you fine blue dreams illuminated stars lost in your hair, liked to listen to life whispering through these wet lips, from the place where your name is. I would have liked to give you a piece of sky every night, to stroke the light, smooth your wings somewhat, while perfumes rip through the morning light, I would have built every tomorrow for you.
Hey, That's No Way to Say Goodbye (Leonard Cohen)
I loved you in the morning, our kisses deep and warm Your hair upon the pillow like a sleepy golden storm Yes, many loved before us, I know that we are not new In city and in forest they smiled like me and you But now it's come to distances and both of us must try Your eyes are soft with sorrow Hey, that's no way to say goodbye I'm not looking for another as I wander in my time Walk me to the corner, our steps will always rhyme You know my love goes with you as your love stays with me It's just the way it changes, like the shoreline and the sea But let's not talk of love or chains and things we can’t untie
Dis, quand reviendras-tu? (Barbara / Jean Louis Aubert)
This is the song real-life G shared with me just before we left each other in Quebec. I still associate it with heartbreak xD
So Long, Marianne (Leonard Cohen)
You left when I told you I was curious I never said that I was brave Now so long, Marianne, it's time that we began To laugh and cry and cry and laugh about it all again
Salam (Souad Massi) - translated from arabic on google, wish I knew how beautiful it is in its original form
Salam I will walk in silence, and bid farewell to my hope in you You're a dream that quickly passed [...] Bid me farewell with care Oh years of my life and the rest of it that I didn't live Oh story I've come to read that suddenly I couldn't finish Oh tale as soon as I started, came the closing chapter

its me again with the arabic lyric and poetry stuff , but honestly what hurt me the most was finding out that both "ana wa leila" and "mustaqil" were based on true stories
"mustaqil" takes place in palestine during one of the many wars for the land , where the poet's lover dies on her way to give him something at the border. he watches as she takes her last breath , for his sake. " strew your hair around me , strew. and let us spend the night of a lifetime together. that's how my death becomes astonishing. hug me, kiss my eyes and go on." his lover , souad , was known to have beautiful long hair and scholars claim that he spoke at some point to his friends about how he loved the way that it would embrace him whenever he embraced her.
and "ana wa leila" took place during the arab romanticism and colonial period at one of the many arts schools in arabia. the poet wanted to marry leila , so he promised her that when he got rich enough to support her , he'd marry her. she came from a prestigious family , so much so that when the poet made his goal a reality , she had already been betrothed to another. he preformed his poem to at a competition for the school and both leila and the man she was betrothed to were moved to tears. while he cried after barely making it through the poem , the poet was asked to repeat the beautifully solemn words he wrote for the crowd. if i remember correctly , he never found love again.
at the moment im trying to learn italian and french so i can read those poems as well ! i do hope you the best on your literary journey <33
(arabic lyrics/poetry talks !!)
hello hello !! nice of you to come here to crush my heart into little pieces again /j for legal reasons that's a joke, it's nice to hear from you hehe
AHDHSFJDFH *SLAMS HAND INTO TABLE* MUSTAQIL I'M- i'm so sad ? that's it i'm just sad, i can'ttttt- that gives a brand new meaning and perspective to it. the whole time i thought that it was him dying and her comforting him through it, but turns out it was the other way around. it breaks my heart that the last few lines were probably the things that she said to him as they spent their last night together,,,, "i'm growing tired and my eyes need to close" aahhh god the embracing with the hair part................. romance was invented when the broken hearted took up their pens as swords, laying their devotion and longing out in bloodied ink just for a chance that their beloved would stay.
aghhhhh leila !! *shakes fist* but i can kinda understand, back then it was common practice to marry whoever could provide for you, no matter if it was love or not. i feel so bad for our poet.... it probably took him so long to gather all his riches and to gain as much prestige in the world of literature to have enough money to finally face her again. he probably thought of her constantly when times were hard and everything....only to find out that she was taken by another man :'))))) the thought of him performing this poem to the school, baring his bleeding heart in carefully spun verses as the object of his affections and her betrothed watched on.... your honor i am nothing short of devastated.
thank you so much for taking the time to share these stories with me ! they really helped add another layer to the poems and lyrics that i've already read and i'm sure i won't be forgetting about souad and leila and the men who love them any time soon. i wish you the best of luck on your italian + french studies !! and you're welcome to drop by an ask or a dm whenever you'd like to recommend any poetry / songs to me :D my doors are always wide open hehe

Hello, when you have the time could you recommend world war II books? Wish you a nice rest of the day.
Stephen E Ambrose! That's the one I was thinking of, he did the band of brothers book, also called Band of Brothers.
With The Old Breed at Pelelui and Okinawa By Eugene Sledge is a great memoir of the pacific war, I've read it a couple times and it makes me cry every time.
Hitler's Last Secretary by Traudl Junge is what I'm currently reading.
I recently finished Nazi Wives by James Wyllie
Another I've read more than once is The Eternal Nazi by Nicholas Kulish and Souad Mekhennet, it covers a lot of denazifacation and post-war but it's great.
The Death of Democracy by Benjamin Carter Hett
Honestly, I tend to lean towards the rise of fascism and communism than the military history these days. But I find the whole era fascinating. I have many books on my to read list, including a few about the occupation of France.

23 Years since her Passing: Actress Souad Hosni, the Maker of Joy who suffered from Misery.
The issue of her death was a mystery, as the incident was classified as a suicide, while some of her friends pointed the finger of accusation at her murder, and the truth was not known until now.
Amidst the glamour of Egypt's golden age of cinema, the tragic death of beloved actress Souad Hosni sent shockwaves through the entertainment world. Souad Hosni or “Cinderella of the Arab screen” is an Egyptian actress, singer, and performance artist. She gained wide fame throughout the Arab world, she won the audience's love and admiration and won many awards. Despite enjoying a successful professional career marked by notable achievements, Souad Hosni's personal life was fraught with a series of crises, particularly following her involvement with the darker side of politics. Tragically, her life came to an end when she fell from the balcony of her apartment in London.
The well-known personality of Soad Hosni would not have killed herself, especially since she intended to go back to Egypt before passing away and her health had clearly improved.  After the “January 25 Revolution” and the arrest of Safwat Al-Sharif, her sister “Nagat Al Saghira” reopened the case. The first accused this time is former Speaker of the Consultative Council, Safwat Al-Sharif.
The Scotland investigation team spent 3,915 hours looking into the events surrounding the actress Souad Hosni's death after she fell off her house's balcony. They gathered a lot of information about her original diaries, which she summarized in her own voice on 12 cassette tapes before editing them into 350 pages. A week before she passed away, Souad Hosni completed the summary, and it was stolen on Thursday night, June 21, 2001, from the scene of crime.
The British judge decided to "reinvestigate the case of the death of the Egyptian citizen Souad Muhammad Kamal Hosni" after the investigations concluded in "suicide" and the file was closed. This was in response to a request made by British attorney of Palestinian descent "Amjad Salvini" based on an official power of attorney from the family. The criminal interpretation paper that lawyer Salvini was submitted to the British Scotland Yard's "Mysterious Crimes" Department. This convinced the Investigations Department that reopening the investigation was necessary because of the presence of notable proof and evidence showing that Souad was killed and did not commit suicide, as stated in the decision of the court.
“Political conspiracy”, they said. In the summary provided in Souad’s Recordings, many significant details emerged about her diary and the truth surrounding her interactions with Safwat Al-Sharif. According to Souad, she cherished enjoyment, happiness and romance. In late 1964, Officer Safwat Al-Sharif brought her to his office for their first encounter. To her surprise, he proposed a collaboration for what he claimed was a noble cause. However, upon learning his intentions, Souad reacted with anger, even resorting to slapping him.
Safwat Al-Sharif's leverage rested on a video featuring Souad and a friend. By threatening to destroy her artistic career and personal reputation, he forced her to work with him. She recounts how Safwat Al-Sharif became angry when she asked him to relieve her from work, because she was going to marry the artist “Abdel Halim Hafez”. He threatened her again, claiming that her future was “with the authority”. And till now, Safwat is the one accused in Souad Hosni’s murder.
In conclusion, the mystery of Souad Hosni's death still makes people curious and unsure. Even though authorities say it was suicide, many people believe there's more to it, maybe involving politics. Reopening the case and learning from Souad Hosni's own words in her diary show that people are still searching for the truth. Until we know for sure what happened, her story will always remind us of how complicated fame and tragedy can be.

PRESS RELEASE
The Transformation of Silence
exhibition with Héla Ammar and Souad Mani
curated by Marianna Liosi
With a focus on persisting injustices in post-2011 Tunisia, The Transformation of Silence is an exhibition curated by Marianna Liosi that explores different forms of truth seeking, as well as the emotions linked to persisting social injustices that affect the country and its communities. Stemming from personal and societal feelings of rage, frustration, and disillusion, a variety of artworks by Tunisian artists Héla Ammar and Souad Mani seek to express dissent and political action. They provide an overview of the challenges that the Tunisian civil society has to face, from legacies of injustice, massive migration to severe pollution. Simultaneously, the works play as “glitches” in the current social and political system that can open the space for political change.
The show brings together performative videos, video installations, sculptures, photographs, as well as new productions and archive materials that trace trajectories through spaces, confronting historical moments and desires across times.
The title of the exhibition is inspired by a speech held by Afro-American writer, feminist, professor and civil rights activist Audre Lorde, which is an invocation to take action and speak out.
The Transformation of Silence is one of the outcomes of Liosi’s 2021 fellowship on Memory & Justice, at Merian Center for Advanced Studies in the Maghreb (MECAM), Tunis. The event is the result of, and has been made possible by the cooperation between MECAM and La Boîte (Tunis), with the kind support of Fatma Kilani.

It was a pleasure to exchange with the young curator Meriam Gaied in 2022 as part of her training at The TASAWAR CURATORIAL STUDIOS organized by GOETHE-INSTITUT Tunis.
"Much like in her photographs, she transforms data into poetry to formulate her thoughts and impressions. The data and graphs she shares with her audience, whom she likes to refer to as observers, would appeal to the ‘pathos’ as well as the ‘logos’. She takes the scientific discourse and adds to it to make it more accessible. She chooses to reflect on life from a poetical stance where the dynamics are less constrained and more humane. In fact, she defines a certain state of consciousness where one thrives through poetics. This goes along the lines of what Heidegger states, that the only authentic way to dwell or sojourn on this earth is to dwell poetically."

Happy fourth day of Halloween!
What would your characters dress up as?
It is not Halloween anymore but I'd like to answer anyways
Katz would be a pirate (duh), while I can see Souad dressed up as a Disney princess, probably Tiana. Nayely would go as a classic witch, Jiang would put on a full blown armor, while Haakon is the type of person who would just dress up normally, no matter how many times The others insist

Marianna Liosi

I really fell behind on the zoomester study challenge, catching up today (under the cut)!
I’m struggling to work through some theoretical calculations on the structure of the isotopes that I study, hopefully I can work it out with my research advisor when we meet today.
Day 6 - Quickly! tag urself!
five am. ice cold water. watching the sunrise. healthy smoothies. skincare. reads often. friends with everyone.
ten am. iced coffees. always in a hurry. golden hour aesthetic. remembers the little details. loves old movies.
midday. mom jeans. picnic dates. thrift-shopping. pinterest. low-key insecure. obssessed with photography.
three pm. the color yellow. walks everywhere barefoot. oversized t-shirts. can make anyone laugh. a bit crazy.
five pm. warm smiles. classy. aesthetic instagram feed. anklets. soft music. yoga. face masks.
eight pm.  netflix. cuddles warm sheets. indoors life. loves singing but can’t. sweats. never sleeps.
midnight. driving at night. flirty. neon lights. wears a lot of red. neon lights. big sunglasses. karaoke.
three am. tired eyes. small sketchbooks. pressed flowers. stargazing from the window.
I’m three a.m. all of the way... although I really need to break the habit of staying up late.
Day 7 -  Some of your music faves right now (let’s say up to 5)
sidney gish - especially sin triangle.
death grips - I’m sorry for my music taste, I know they’re not for everyone, but I think it’s good study music. their best song is probably on gp.
daymé arocena - the whole cubafonía album is great, but especially la rumba me llamo yo.
souad massi - my favorite song of hers is ghir enta.
penelope scott - favorites: sweet hibiscus tea, cigarette ahegao, rät.
Day 8 - International Women’s Day! What’s your take on feminism?
if it’s not intersectional I’m not interested.
also, I think that we’ve made progress with women and men being seen as equals, but I think it’s also important for femininity to be seen as masculinity’s equal. historically feminists have divorced themselves from traditional femininity, even to go so far as to claim that it is unnatural & all people that still embrace it are faking it or being coerced into it by the patriarchy. this has alienated many women who do enjoy expressing traditional femininity (and is also harmful to feminine-inclined people that aren't women). just something that’s been on my mind lately.
Day 9 - Write something that you’d like to tell yourself.
you're not going to write a perfect sentence, so just write an sentence. you're not going to write a perfect essay, so just write an essay. you can always revise later.
Day 10 - Tag someone whose aesthetic you love seeing on your feed.
the first person that comes to mind is @darkmacademia, her prints (like this calendar) are very pretty!
Day 11 - What’s something that you’ve always wanted to do but haven’t got the chance to do so?
I've always wanted to make some video essays (about history of science/physics & other interests that I have) and post them to youtube. it never seems like I have enough time to organize my writing and record myself.
Day 12 - Are you more into plant or flowers? What’s your fave type?
this is a confusing question because flowers are plants.. right? my favorite types of plants have always been epiphytes, specifically mini varieties of orchids.. they’re so cool. I have some mini & normal-sized phals; I would love to grow a sedirea japonica if i could find one.
