I don't care when people have takes that don't agree with mine or love characters that I don't. What does get under my skin is when people are smug and self-congratulatory about a take that's just wrong.

"The story of the show in season one was that it was a bunch of people with conflicting personalities shoved onto a boat together."

The story has always centered Stede, Ed, and their relationship. The initial idea of it came from the fruitiness of historical Stede Bonnet and Blackbeard's whole situation, and David Jenkins always meant for it to be a romance about those two guys. (He talks about it in this interview. The romance wasn't added partway through filming, it was changed because of the way Rhys and Taika played it.)

OFMD was never an ensemble show. Stede and Ed are the primary characters and everyone else, however much we love them, is secondary. Even Jim, the only other character who gets a flashback and a through-line in season one, is a supporting character. And their story is fantastic! It's about finding a place where you can be who you are, learning who you are beyond assigned roles, and finding belonging and family -- and that's also what our A-plot is about. Jim's story supports the main story.

The crew does have considerably more screen time in season one, and that's because season one has more time. I truly, sincerely wish that season two had the space to feature the crew the way season one did because I love almost all of them and wanted more of them. I think that the crew's relative absence in season two is, overall, to the show's detriment.

But let's think, just for a second, about why there was less time devoted to the crew in a season that was much shorter. If the crew's storyline was the main one and if all characters were equally important, why did David choose to spend the time he had focusing on Ed, Stede, and their relationship? Is it because he lost the plot of his own show?

No.

Season two is shorter. Cuts had to be made, so David cut back on the crew's stories and kept the main story -- the Gentlebeard story -- intact. A writer does not sacrifice their primary story for subplots. When you show me that season two has more Gentlebeard per episode, you're not proving that the nature or focus of the show changed. You're underscoring the importance of the story that has always been the show's center.

If you liked the show better when it had more time to commit to the supporting cast, that's okay. I sincerely don't mind that some people liked season two less because it was heavier on the Gentlebeard. I just don't understand why it's so important to downplay the importance of Ed and Stede in the first season. OFMD has always been their show, and insisting that that's not true is bonkers to me.

Literally no one is saying that Ed and Stede should be the only characters onscreen. No one who loves Gentlebeard hates the crew; I'm deep into Gentlebeardie tumblr and there's tons of love for every single character (with maybe one exception). No one is saying that Ed did nothing wrong or Izzy is the devil incarnate or time given to characters who aren't Stede and Ed is time wasted.

There is a right answer when we're talking about what OFMD is about and who the main characters are.

Also: anyone who's still struggling to understand Anne and Mary's importance should read this. Atticus wrote a lovely and concise essay that ought to clear everything up.

Also also: anyone who harasses people, anonymously or not, is the worst kind of fan. There are no fandom opinions that warrant racism, transphobia, homophobia, doxxing, etc.

What the Future Holds

I’ve seen a few people making posts like this, and considering how much this series means to me and how it’s technically ending tomorrow, I feel like I should do my own, both to clear up things to y’all and for my own peace of mind.

So, to start with the obvious question; I’m not going anywhere once the show has ended, but I’m also not going to interact with any Season 3 content or write anything about it. As far as I’m concerned, Hilda is still my main fandom, and I have many more fic ideas for it, but there is no Season 3.

Now, I’ll be the first to admit that my fic output has been slowing down the last couple of years; part of that is that my interest peaked with Season 2’s release, and I do spend more time with other fandoms these days, but none of them have gotten to me the way Hilda has. The truth is I’ve had to take some time away from this fandom for personal reasons, and also, to be honest, 2023 has been a slow year for me as a writer in general. My output has basically been 1/3rd of what it was last year.

The reason for that is because I’ve been working on a truly massive other project. I initially planned on setting aside 3 months for it, but it’s evolved into an entire year’s work and it’s still not quite done. But I am still writing in between working on this, and I have decided outright that I’m done once 2024 starts, so hopefully I’ll do more writing then. Either way, I have many more ideas I want to get down, including two more Hilda fics by the end of this month alone.

Longer term? I can’t promise I’ll be here forever, but I also can’t see myself leaving this franchise behind. Hilda and Twig will hopefully spawn some more ideas, and eventually I need to continue the Runaway AU alongside others.

Plus, Hilda, or at least the first two seasons, are like home to me. I have an entire Hilda corner in my bedroom. I love this little blue-haired kid and everything about the world she lives in, and I can’t imagine that changing for a long time yet. It’s already been years since my favourite parts of canon came out; what’s a few more, eh?

Ventus and Vanitas for the character asks!! 3, 8, 21, 22, and 23! Sorry if that's too many? You don't gotta do all of em!

HELLO thank you for the ask!! this is a lotta questions but i'm excited to answer them!! Warning, there's a little negativity since some of the questions ask for dislikes about the characters. I love both Ven and Vanitas, I'm just saying my personal thoughts on them! + If you don't agree with these thoughts that's not a huge deal to me, we just agree to disagree LOL

3. Least favorite canon thing about this character?

Ventus - The "You're awful, Aqua" scene. Please Ventus I know you're upset but APOLOGIZE TO AQUA she didn't deserve that. I wish his and Aqua's relationship had more focus in general, because they're really cute when they're together. I genuinely hope Ventus apologizes to her for being a brat in BBS though

Vanitas - To be honest, anything I dislike about Vanitas comes from fanon, since I feel Vanitas does his role as antagonist really well.

8. What's something the fandom does when it comes to this character that you despise?

Ventus - Two big things.

One: Portraying him as a coldblooded killer when in comes to the KHUX/Strelitzia stuff. I think it's a lot more fun that Ventus didn't mean to hurt anyone, but ended up being responsible for so much pain. It's really tragic, and I think it makes KHUX more interesting as opposed to "Ventus killed Strelitzia out of malice". Also, it's genuinely just funnier like that. I know it's dark but nothing makes me laugh more than the mental image of 10 year old Ventus covered in blood just going "wow is this strawberry jam?? lol how'd this end up here?"

Two: Not the biggest fan of people like. Boiling Ventus' personality to just "oh he's baby". I think Ventus being childish is a really important character flaw, but he's got a lot more to him than just that, and his youthful nature has upsides and downsides. On this note I 100% think Ventus knows what sex is and that that's how babies are made. I know it's a weirdly popular portrayal to just have him not know what sex is at 17 years old. It's also a lot funnier if Ventus just has a different vocabulary from the other characters his age when it comes to adult topics and doesn't understand slang because Master Eraqus taught him that it's impolite to use term XYZ or whatever. Vanitas - Okay this is rough because there's a lot in the KH fandom's portrayals of Vanitas that I really don't like and other things that I really love. But to match Ven I'll boil it down to two big things: One: This one is kinda hard to explain but. I know that Ventus and the Wayfinder Trio DO NOT have to be present in every "Vanitas Redemption Fanfiction" but it really grinds my gears when they're treated as, like, 'close-minded' and completely left out of Vanitas' life. The idea that Vanitas is secretly a good guy and it's just his relationship with the Wayfinders/the Wayfinders themselves are the problem is just such a boring take. They don't have to be on good terms but have Vanitas earn their tolerance, have them settle things, man! It's SO JUICY when they have to work things out or Vanitas feels actual regret and isn't just handed the "you're a good guy now and we trust you" stuff on a silver platter. Ventus, Sora, and Vanitas are a trio...I think that if Sora takes in Vanitas as a friend, he should at least try to understand Ventus' fears about the whole thing.

Two: I think its a BILLION times funnier if Vanitas is shorter than Ventus but SO MANY PEOPLE MAKE HIM TALLER IT PISSES ME OFF. Vanitas and Ventus are either the same size OR Vanitas is shorter. No more tall Vanitas. I am on my hands and knees begging you all. Short King Vanitas. SHORT. KING. VANITAS. As a short person I need this. DO IT FOR ME.

21. If you're a fic writer and have written for this character, what's your favorite thing to do when you're writing for this character? What's something you don't like?

Ventus - Hardest thing for me to write when it comes to Ventus are. Sassy remarks/comebacks, and times I'd KNOW he'd be a brat but I can't bring myself to write him saying anything too harsh. But my favorite things to do? I love giving Ventus issues/fears that he would reasonably develop after his 12 year nap. I don't care if canon says he doesn't have horrible insomnia after KH3. He SHOULD have horrible insomnia and I WILL write him crying in frustration when he's struggling with sleep.

Vanitas - I actually don't write Vanitas much. I feel like I can't do him justice, but it's fun to have him just be a douche-bag sometimes. I think I'm not great at his dialogue, but writing about his feelings towards Ventus is fun.

22. If you're a fic reader, what's something you like in fics when it comes to ths character? Something you don't like?

Ventus - I LOVE fics where Ventus is forced to take a more responsible role, or has to balance his childish nature with a growing sense of maturity. This is one of the reasons I'm SUCH a huge fan of fanfics where Ventus is like a big brother figure to Sora. I also LOVE LOVE LOVE fics where Ventus' anger is explored like. Oh he is FULL of anger, man. As much love and kindness that's in his heart. There is Hatred there too. AND ANY FIC THAT REVOLVES AROUND HIS RELATIONSHIP WITH SORA AND HOW BEING IN SORA'S HEART AFFECTS HIM. Fic recs that have some of the above tropes!

Vanitas - I love when he's kinda. Forcibly made to form a "truce" with Ventus but keeps testing him. I love fics where Ven's just minding his own business and Vanitas is like "I'm gonna start shit >:)" and they both get called out for being idiots when they fight each other. But OH MAN. MORE THAN THAT. I love love love when fics have Vanitas adapt the attitude of "No one can hurt Ventus BUT ME." it's my favorite flavor of protective Vanitas. I’m usually not a negative blog and I delete these most of the time, but it’s very frustrating when people make comments like this when I actually adhere to a person’s skin tone. Her skin was made the darkest in my fanart, which is fairly light because she’s mixed race. There is nothing wrong with being light-skinned and mixed, ftr. Just please revisit images of Grace Jeanette. Some people give her skin that is much darker than what her skin tone is (which I’m not gonna go preaching about, it’s whatever to me personally), and iirc the comic darkens her a bit more as well, but I think it makes people perceive the real person in a very different way. How dark do you think she is, anon, genuinely???

This is the second time that someone has mentioned white washing in my art — the first time was Ray, and the person had not even KNOWN that Ray was mixed Latino. Ray and Grace are very light skinned and that’s OKAY. It does not diminish who they are as Latino and black people, I promise you as somebody who is ALSO mixed race and lighter skinned.

Anyway, here is Frank’s skin tone vs her skin tone side by side in that recent art, and if you go through my Danger Days art, you’ll find I give her consistently darker skin than Frank, Gerard, and Mikey.

And here is another drawing, because I draw her plenty and consistently make her the darkest in the group. It’s all I’ll say on the matter because there are bigger fish to fry in my life, but I thought it was important to point out, especially when it gets to me as someone who relates to Ray and Grace’s skin color.

I finally quit

I didn't bother waiting until Yun Chuan was R6 (he was R5 when I uninstalled the game) I didn't bother waiting for Yamato or Yuuhime's trust missions/swiftspace to unlock (and let's be honest, the devs have been shit at writing their characters for awhile now) I didn't bother waiting to see if this game would get better at all, because I know it won't (End Of Service will most likely happen soon) I decided to finally quit Dislyte for good. It's been nothing but a headache to me for the past several months, and it's gotten so bad to the point where I can't ignore the games flaws anymore, because there's way too many and they're way too awful. Bad gameplay, bad stories, nonexistent communication....you name it, the game has it.
