One of Us  (Leverage 5+1)

Part four of my fic for the Leverage Appreciation Weeks Event!

I’ll  be posting one section a day this week leading up to the beginning of Leverage: Redemption on the 9th!!!  Art is included in the text, ID at the end; summary and tags below.  Hope you enjoy!  :)

Amy knew who the elegant Sophie Devereaux was.  The woman could periodically be found sipping a glass of wine while sitting in quiet conference at a table, or instructing her theatre students through exercises that both entertained and frustrated the pub staff.  She was close to Hardison, Eliot and Parker--could be one of the partners in owning the Brew Pub for all Amy knew.  Amy enjoyed watching her, and would occasionally sketch studies of her expressive face.  Other than that, though, Amy was merely professional.

Amy had taken the closing shift and was quietly picking up and wiping down tables as  customers left.  There were only a few people remaining, and Amy knew that Ms. Devereaux and Mr Ford would be the last to leave.  Hardison often told her not to worry about waiting for them and to just finish up and head home.  He must wipe down that table himself on those nights.

She had just bussed more dishes back toward the kitchen when she realized that Mr. Ford was standing, giving Ms. Devereaux a kiss on the cheek, and leaving.  Ms. Devereaux, however, was not.  Instead, she leaned back in her chair, legs crossed and letting one shoe dangle loosely from her toes as she sipped the remainder of her wine.

Amy went over to pick up Mr. Ford’s glass, and ask if Ms. Devereaux would like a refill.

“No, this will be it for me tonight, thank you.”  She then gestured at the chair Mr. Ford had just vacated.  “Join me for a minute, Amy?”

Amy hoped that she didn’t look too surprised, or sound confused, as she set down her tray and slid into the offeredd chair.  “Ms Devereaux?”

“Nothing to be worried about, I just want to get to know you a bit better.  Do you like working here?”

There was a deliberately nonchalant tone in that smooth voice.  Amy sat up straighter, not sure where this was going to go.  “Yes, very much.”

“What’s your favorite part?”

Well, that was an interview question.  Amy repressed a slight sigh--she didn’t know why Ms. Devereaux wanted to know this--and answered steadily.  “The people.  I like the rest of the staff here, and the regulars, and meeting the ones who just visit.”

“Mmm,” Ms. Devereaux hummed in thought, swirling the last finger of wine left in her glass, watching Amy with a slight smile.  “You are someone who likes to help.”  She leaned forward, gaze becoming warmer and more intense, “I’ve even seen you getting along with Parker and Eliot.”

“Of course!” Amy knew she probably couldn’t keep the offense out of her voice.  They were Ms. Devereaux’s friends, she didn’t need to sound like it was so… so… unusual… for others to like them too.

The laugh that Ms. Devereaux released as she let the posturing drop was disarming.  Amy hadn’t even really known that it was an act until it was gone.  “No need to be offended.  I just wanted to check.”

“Ms. Devereaux,” Amy protested, unsure exactly what to say other than the woman’s name.

“Call me Sophie.   Yes, I can see why Parker likes you, and Eliot and Hardison.   They all speak highly of you, you know, Amy,” Sophie teases with a warm smile.  “You’re good for them.”  She drained the last of her wine, and stood, sliding her foot back into the loosened shoe.  “Thanks for the chat, Amy.  I’ll see you again soon.”

Amy tried not to gape as Sophie Devereaux sashayed away out of the pub.
