The Dripping and Undulating Ceramic Sculptures of Toru Kurokawa
Black Mountain, 2015. Ceramic. 39 2/5 × 31 1/2 × 39 2/5 in
Japanese artist Toru Kurokawa sculpts improbable liquid and biological shapes from a variety of ceramic materials. What begins life as a mere lump of clay, the artist molds and carves into artworks that appear like arrays of honeycomb, undulating coral, or dripping stalactites. Last year Kurokawa had a solo show with Sokyo Gallery titled The Savage Math, and you can see more of his work on Artsy. (via Sophie Gunnol)

Peter Gentenaar was born in 1946 in the Netherlands, Peter Gentenaar decided to make his own paper when he realised that his engravings had such deep relief, that commercial paper could not be used.“slowly I turned from a paper user into a paper and pulp maker and while doing so found endless amounts of new possibilities for shapes and forms of paper.”
(Gentenaar and Torley, n.d).

"My inspiration is a plant bud, which, in spring, unfolds into a leaf. A compact folded form feeds itself with water and turns into a great spacious form. In autumn, this leaf falls off of the tree, the water evaporates and a small web of fibers curling around the spine is the new form.”
Peter Gentenaar The Memory of Paper
Iris van Herpen presented her latest Couture collection, titled ‘Ludi Naturae’ in a collaboration with Peter Gentenaar, January, 2018, at the Galerie de Mineralogie et de Geologie, in Paris. Peter created a site specific ‘floating installation that blossoms around the garments as the models move’. This was another totally different direction to take Peter’s paper sculptures but was a wonderful combination of organic designed clothing on models sailing through the paper lined catwalk. In 2009, Peter was asked to decorate the Abbey Church in Saint Riquier, Somme, France, for the classical music festival held in this flamboyant gothic church. It formed the perfect backdrop for more than eighty paper sculptures hung in this exposition. The photos on the web and Peter’s web-site aroused international interest. Read more
