Wherefore dost motivation hold deep hatred for me?

As the heading probably implies, I am currently lacking a lot of motivation, which is truly sub-optimal because I literally have my Italian GCSEs this week and I literally have not revised. Moreover, my End of Years are fast approaching and I have my French GCSEs in three week's time. Help.

Consequentially, even though my history teacher still refuses to believe that it is a word, I have decided to turn this into one of those posts where my dopamine literally just relies on the number of notes that I recieve. As promised, @the-red-planet-mars, the floor is yours you have been tagged.

10 notes: I will actually plan my English homework so that I can then do it without having to ask for an extension. It is due on the day on which I have two of my Italian papers.

15 notes: I will update my 'Aeneid' notes so that my virtual document is up to date with the translations that we have done in class. I should technically also revise the themes and how Juno is portrayed, but we don't talk about that right now.

20 notes: If I haven't done this yet, I will create both a Spanish Quizlet with all the vocabulary I need to learn and I will create a Latin one for all the vocabulary from 'The Aeneid' that I need to know.

25 notes: I will plan, in English, different things that I could say for the picture for my French IGCSE oral. Also, this is a picture I will be using for my Spanish End of Years, so that is doubly helpful.

30 notes: I will do an Italian listening paper though I will listen to it at a faster speed than what is asked because otherwise I will literally get so bored and lose all will to live.

45 notes: I will finish researching Virgil and the historical context.

60 notes: I will practice Latin and Greek vocabulary on Quizlet every day after this week, for at least 10 minutes each day for each language.

75 notes: I really need to do this. I will make a poster with how to form different tenses in Italian.

100 notes: I will do an Italian Writing practice paper. This is going to cause me so much suffering. Help me.

120 notes: I will actually write down different expressions, including idomatic phrases, that I could use to describe the picture for my French IGCSE oral.

130 notes: I will make physics notes on energy.

140 notes: I will make notes on quantitative chemistry.

150 notes: I will make a poster with how to form different tenses in French.

Honestly, if you have even bothered to read through all of these, you have absolutely earned more respect that I thought I was capable of giving to a single human being. I technically have a lot more things I should do, including re-reading Things Fall Apart and actually making complete maths notes, as well as notes for the sciences, but I doubt I will never get this many tags anyway.

Edit: It has been five minutes and I already got 14 notes. I am actually terrified of this site. What in Tartarus? Y'all are crazy and I love you so much.

So, I've been thinking over this, and I'm really not trying to come across as rude or offend anyone with my take, but...

What exactly does this fandom want from this game and its characters?

Do y'all want a game featuring good, uncomplicated human men who live by good, uncomplicated human standards and never do anything wrong but with tails, horns, and wings?

Or do y'all want a game about the literal lords of hell and whatever that may entail?

Because I can't be the only one who finds it ironic that the characters who act the most like demons are widely disliked, while the characters who act less like demons are widely liked, right? In a game about dating demons, being demonic or showing any kind of character flaw isn't attractive, and those of us who actually do enjoy the darker themes, when we do get them, are treated as having somehow failed morally for liking it. It makes no sense to me.

And this is in spite of so many posts from this fandom stating how they want their "demons to be demons." That they want complex and interesting characters. That they want to feel like they're in a realm surrounded by devils and engage with all the hostilities and angst and drama and blood that comes along with that, yet in the same breath, can't even handle characters like Lucifer, Belphegor, Asmodeus, Solomon, Simeon, and Diavolo. Characters who aren't exactly nice or fully transparent about their goals or actions. Characters who are a little or a lot fucked up. Characters who are gray at worse, but ultimately, show they are capable of being more. Even if poorly executed by the writers, they tried to show us, to some extent, exactly what we've been asking for. Now we rarely get events or chapters where the brothers so much as even swat a fly, and I can't help but blame that on the knee jerk reaction of the fandom to scream about anything less than flattering.

Which is why I can't help but wonder if Obey Me! Nightbringer does happen to touch on darker themes and characterization, than I can only imagine how well the fandom will handle any of it (my guess is poorly).

solomon really is the devs' favorite, huh. not once have they disappointed with a solomon-centered event, dialogue, or scene (save for the change in his last birthday event). they just... carve him out so meticulously compared to everyone else because his thoughts and actions have flowed so smoothly compared to when we first met him?

when we met him, you could view him as arrogant or a bit odd and eccentric, because the basis of him greeting you seems to be out of curiousity. during his hdd card, he even admits that he didn't pay much mind to mc other than being curious of what they were going to do, but his affections slowly grew the more his eyes were opened to new experiences and perspectives.

now, we get a solomon who doesn't solely focus on his experiments or ancient texts, but also confronts people when they step out of line or cross a boundary because he maintains his ability to be kind. he never insults others, he makes sure that everyone's needs or wishes are met, but not to the point where he sacrifices his own wishes. his recent birthday in which he gifted everyone their modified trinkets & gadgets on his own birthday is proof of that.

if someone treats him with contempt, he normally doesnt hold it against them because he's perceptive enough to note where that bitterness is coming from.

there aren't many people caught up with the hard mode lessons, but (s4 spoilers) he's highly aware of how lonely thirteen is, and comes by to visit her on the rare occassion as though she were a neighbor, much to her disdain. he caught onto simeon's doomed fate far before it happened when he noted how 'different' simeon's philosophies were from the collective behavior that is associated with the celestial realm. once simeon dealt with the consequences, solomon was the first to confront him. again. and again. and again. no matter how much simeon denied it or rejected everyone around him, solomon was the one to understand how lonely it can be to deal with something all on your own.

and it's why we see him agreeing to play cards with mammon although everyone else believes it to be a waste of time, allowing leviathan to be himself when no one else can keep up with his passionate rants, always responding to satan's endless inquiries and gathering cats for his birthday every year, indulging in asmodeus' invitations to go shopping or do spa days when everyone else believes it to be draining, checking on beelzebub when others fail to note his subtle sadness or struggle, inviting belphegor to overview his experiments he needs help with when no one bothers to invite him anywhere because they're under the impression that belphegor will turn them down.

for the less notable people, solomon also cleverly checks on lucifer's state by asking for a pact every time he sees him as a greeting, he constantly works with diavolo to ensure that they both meet compromises for the program, he is the person that barbatos entrusts his own life to (grimoire), he is someone that luke can trust without fail, and as i've mentioned earlier, someone who makes sure that simeon doesn't harm himself or the people around him and visits thirteen's lonely cave even when he isn't wanted there.

i haven't seen much interaction with raphael and mephistopheles when it comes to solomon, but solomon is always happy to finally share his cooking with someone who adores it and makes sure that he helps raphael with chores around (albeit horribly..). if i remember correctly, too, he regularly speaks with mephistopheles behind the scenes.

and as for mc? not once has he stepped over their boundaries. he is confident in himself, but he never assumed anything of mc--in fact, he was the first one to ever show faith in them being able to reach their fullest potential by sharing his own power with them for a few hours, just to see what they could do. he is confident when sharing his affections, but he always humbly backs down when he's unsure of how mc will react. prime example is during the planetarium event where everyone spent time with mc and solomon chose to give mc some space instead of selfishly hoarding them to himself because he noticed how tired they looked, and wanted them to focus on relaxing.

bottom line, though, i think that if you pay close attention to solomon throughout the story, whether it be in devilgrams, events, daily chats, or the main story itself, you'll notice how consistent and well-written he is compared to nearly every character. i enjoy him very much and thought of sharing this with all of you to see what you think :] i'm aware that i'm biased, though, haha--very much so.

Barbatos is an observer, a people pleaser, a people watcher. Nothing surprises him, not exactly, but that certainly doesn't mean he's someone who can't be entertained.

It's boring, to know everything. But even so, Barbatos explains, is there not joy in reading a story once read? Is a film unwatchable after the first viewing? Of course not. And while he makes an effort to keep himself in the dark - he was told to, after all - Barbatos has spent too long seeing too much to not predict the present.

It's a natural consequence, then, that he is a lover of potential. Branching paths and possibilities.

[And so he serves Diavolo. And so he makes a pact. And so he watches you.]

He's hard to read. More so than Satan, you think. Less so than Solomon? Hard to say. What are you supposed to expect from someone capable of bridging the gaps between timelines, someone who has control over time itself? It makes it so hard to tell what about him is 'real', and what isn't.

There's just something about him that feels...artificial. Even having grown used to the supernatural capabilities of demons and angels, Barbatos has a persona so meticulous that it only feels fabricated.

He dislikes dirt. He dislikes imperfections, being unable to fulfill his duties. He likes cleanliness, punctuality. Cookie-cutter preferences that border on common sense.

It's hard to say. For as open as he presents himself to be to questions and requests, you find it difficult to imagine that saccharine smile would give way to anything helpful in this regard.

[You remember reading something about how a natural disaster is never evil. The earth does not tear itself apart out of cruelty. The ocean does not swallow bodies out of spite. It just is. Yet humans seem to find purpose in the goodness, in luck. You wonder if Barbatos is like those forces. Not moral, not immoral. Just being.]

It feels....complicated, to be the object of so many people's affections. Only a handful of the people you've met during your stay in the Devildom even bother to maintain some sort of secrecy about their feelings towards you. The handful becomes smaller, often.

Barbatos is...different.

He's not possessive, at least not in the way the others are. It's subtle, and you cant tell if it's unnerving or not. Little things, like the slight glint in his eyes when he takes the words right out of your mouth, answering the questions he'd asked you himself with accuracy that borders on unsettling. It's always accompanied by an air of pride, completely devoid of the insecurity that hides behind facades of elevated self confidence, instead carried by the idea that this is simply a given. He knows you best, he knows what you want, what you need, what's best for you, always, even if you don't. It doesn't matter if you agree or not, he knows he's right.

You suppose it makes sense, for someone capable of rendering time obsolete.

At the same time, there's something sweet about it, probably. There's something pleasant about the softness in his smile when he checks in on you, tea already brewed and ready, comfort food that he just knew you needed prepared as a side. After being thrown into the Devildom with so little support, so little regard for you, the poor, weak human at the mercy of all these unknowably powerful figures, the unquestioning, immaculate care Barbatos provides is relieving and tempting all at once. Sweet, just like the treats he brings you.

[You ignore him, once, and the expression you catch in the panes of spotless glass feels unfamiliar.]

It's only after extensive time in his company, that you notice that Barbatos doesn't blink. Well- No, he does, but he doesn't need to. It wouldn't surprise you if he did it purely to keep those around him comfortable.

You make a game of it for yourself at some point, counting 1, 2, 3, 4- Blink. 1, 2, 3, 4- Meticulous, predictable and precise. It makes you uneasy. Such an uncanny valley of a person. You know better than to consciously treat him badly for it, but you don't doubt that something in your subconscious nags at you that something is wrong when you're with him.

You wonder if he's aware of it, and if part of his 'service' is the self-satisfaction in proving his ability to be pleasant.

[He lives to serve. Willing pawn, no, catalyst. He stops at nothing to help those he judges as interesting to push past the impossible.]

[You are potential. There is allure in shaping you into something truly special, even if you are only human.]

[You wonder if he knows that you’ve been observing him, too.]
