Happy Solar Eclipse day to the seven years woman and ONLY the seven years woman
Tumblr media
Source
Content ID under cut
[Content ID: a 20-panel comic. It’s drawn in a simplistic stick-figure art style. The first 8 panels are more faded than the final 12
Panel 1: a woman and her boyfriend are sitting on a bed while the woman gets a call from a doctor. The boyfriend has one hand on her shoulder and another holding her unoccupied hand. She says “oh god”
Panel 2: the woman is sitting in a large chair, she has lost her hair and is receiving an IV infusion. The machine goes “…beeep…beeep…beeep” her boyfriend is sitting next to her. They’re both working on laptops.
Panel 3: the woman and boyfriend are canoeing on a lake. The woman is wearing a beanie. There’s lilypads in the lake and mountains in the background.
Panel 4: The woman and her boyfriend are sitting at a table. The woman is still bald. There’s a phone on the table and a clock on the wall. The woman says “how long can it take to read a scan!?”
Panel 5: the woman is receiving another IV infusion. Her boyfriend is with her and they’re playing scrabble. The boyfriend says “‘zarg’ isn’t a word.” The woman responds “but caaaancer.” The boyfriend relents “…ok, fine”
Panel 6: the woman and her boyfriend are talking to someone else. The woman is wearing a hat. The other person says “so next year you should come visit us up in the mountains and” the rest of his text is obscured. The woman and the boyfriend are both thinking “next year”
Panel 7: the woman and the boyfriend are getting married. The man is wearing a bow tie and the woman is wearing a white dress and veil. Her hair is short and a bit frizzy. There’s lots of other people there.
Panel 8: a caption at the top says “two years” the woman and her husband are at a coast watching a large bird swoop in and take a fish with a “fwoosh.” the girl is wearing a hat. This panel is the last of the faded ones.
Panel 9: the woman and her husband are walking through a forest full of tall trees. The woman seems to have grown back some of her hair.
Panel 10: the woman is sitting on the ground, her hair is down to the nape of her neck. Her husband is standing behind her. The woman says “my toe hurts. And I found a report of a case in which toe pain was an early sign of cancer spreading.” The husband responds “wait—didn’t you stub your toe yesterday?” The woman responds “yes, but what if this is unrelated?”
Panel 11: the woman and her husband are climbing into a dark cave while someone else guides them. The woman’s hair is down to her shoulders.
Panel 12: the woman is on a large rock taking a picture of a crocodile with a large camera. Her husband stands behind her on a platform with rails, he says “when they estimated your survival odds, I think they made some optimistic assumptions about your hobbies”
Panel 13: the woman is at a doctor’s appointment. Her hair is a little past her shoulders. The doctor says “this is probably nothing, but given your history, we should do a full scan. We’ll call with the results in a few days. Try not to worry about it until then!”
Panel 14: the woman and her husband are at a lake, their image is distorted by the water due to the angle of the picture. The woman is controlling a small submersible camera, she is looking at the lake floor.
Panel 15: the woman and her husband are standing next to each other. The woman’s hair has grown a bit past her shoulders. The woman says “hard to believe—six years ago, I was bald. But today, after a long struggle, I finally look like the little girl from The Ring.” Her husband responds “that’s, uhh…good?” The woman responds “hissssss”
Panel 16: the woman, her husband, and two other women and two other men are looking at a solar eclipse. The landscape is dark and you can see the corona behind the dark moon.
Panel 17: after the eclipse has passed, the world is bright again and everyone looks at each other. another blonde woman says “wow.” The woman says “yeah.”
Panel 18: the woman and her husband walk away hand in hand. The woman says “that was incredible. When’s the next one?” The husband responds “in seven years. Wanna go see it?”
Panel 19: the woman and her husband, still walking hand in hand, are both thinking of a timeline. The timeline has the years 2010, 2017, and 2024 marked with points. Before 2017, the timeline is a solid line, but after 2017, it’s a dashed line. There’s three question marks under the 2024 bullet point.
Panel 20: the woman says “yeah. I’ll do my best.” Her husband responds “it’s a date!”

CW: theories(possibly incorrect since they're mostly hearsays), vague story/lore spoilers, possible sagau potential, vitamin d deficiency, prolonged sun exposure (can those two even count as warnings), mentioning of fatal injuries due to being out in the "sun" for too long, your average clingy ahh acolytes, sagau cult au being sagau cult au, a few cusswords, and cake overall being a dumbass at explaining things and being shit at english
This isn't organized in any way possible, be warned.
Tumblr media
So, archons, right? Gods and goddesses and deities, and primordial gods, and whatnot
So, hear me out nice and good and cool,
Sun and Moon primordial gods✨
Like, think about it for a second,
The sun god is capable of controlling a cooler and more powerful version of pyro, and the moon god is capable of controlling geo and having a stronger grip on hydro than the hydro archon herself, bc yk, gravitational pull and all
Their "god names" would be Hemera/Apollo for the sun god and Alignak/Nyx for the moon god,
But if we wanna go with genshin's tradition of naming gods from the book "The Lesser Key of Solomon", more specifically the book "Ars Goetia", moon god is/would be Bathin (or Bathym, Mathim, Marthim), or Vepar (also Separ, Vephar), and the sun god being either Gaap (also Goap, Tap), Orobas, Orias (also spelled Oriax), or Furcas
The sun god would rule over the surface world aka Teyvat, and the moon god would rule over the Abyss/where the "real" (night) sky is
⟩⟩⟩=⟨⟨⟨
Now, you know how most sagau fics would include the acolytes being clingy and all? Yk, like the classical koala-on-tree type? Well guess what, that shit's bad now.
Multiple, if not all, sagau fics mention the Creator™ has this sorta "warm aura" to them, and wanna know the reason behind that?
That's right, sun/solar radiation.
And yes, this would mean that sun god would not only have to actively avoid their acolytes, but would also need to be actively near them at the same time
And what about the moon god you may ask?
While, yes, they might emit a small amount of radiation due to reflecting the ones that radiate from the sun god, that radiation would vary alot depending how long/close moon god spends with them,
So basically, if moon god spends alot of time hanging out and having skin to skin contact/just overall being close but not touching sun god=increases the chances of them (moon god) emitting the same radioactive levels as the first 10 days after the Chernobyl disaster.
The overall symptoms of sun poisoning are skin redness and blistering, pain and tingling on the skin, swelling of the skin, headache, fever and chills, nausea, dizziness, dehydration, vomiting, and an increased chance in getting, yes, you guessed it, skin cancer.
And due to them (sun god, and by extension, the moon god too) being a primordial god that's possibly and probably older than Celestia itself, or even the Primordial One(which is probably them tbh), archons can and will still be able to experience these symptoms including other nonhuman/supernatural hybrids/creatures like the Adepti and Aranara(don't ask), but albeit more tame and more time has to be spent with the sun and/or moon god to actually feel and experience said symptoms of sun poisoning
Oh, and when i meant that they have to atleast spend some time being with their acolytes, what i mean is, is that because the moon god has to more or less spend some time not being with sun god, moon god can't radiate/reflect vitamin D, bc yk, moon = rock, the lack of vitamin D would more or less come into fruition, with serious shit happening like vitamin D deficiency
And vitamin D deficiency causes brain fog, forgetfulness, and chronic stress, fatigue, bone pain, muscle weakness, muscle aches or muscle cramps, mood changes, hair loss, and an increased chance of getting depression.
With symptoms like these, you'd wonder how Teyvat is even alive, right?
Well that's bc the physical sun and moon still exist, just that the living personifications of them are now walking and roaming Teyvat atleast 25/8.

Cake's Notes: And that concludes my take on this particular and interesting au that's been on my mind for the past week :DD
More will be added later, with the addition being going into an in-depth look/explanation at their powers, abilities, and weapons, and maybe even including stats if i'm motivated enough :)))

i never blockedt you
on snapchat
or whatsapp (you weren’t even muted),
yup, i still haven’t
but i didn’t have a properly working phone...
still......don’t
but either way you keep threatening to split on me
like a weapon…fcking
manipulative as shit
it just seems to me that you just want to?
you never imprinted tho
but she did
so why should you?
i won’t ever, again, fight....
….with you.
my favorite accomplice
i wanted to learn with an open mind
even after my phone died
how to remain soft with you.
even after being callled
“old news"
pffft
at least until
i ‘m  eventually murdered by a cisgender man...
but
don’t fckn
pppppppop shit
cuz like….. literally…..all i did was change my url.
shit, i Only blockedt you AFTER i saw you referencing gaslighting.
bc uhmm IIIIIIif that is about meeeeeeeeeeee
ha!!!
 how fucking dare you.…..lyk....wuhh?
like when you said there is no difference between syn and alesia?????
HANH?
oh, but you think i blockedt you first bc i didn’t wanna get my feelings hurt?
….mhhhhhhh. ok.
Tumblr media
seeems odd since you’re not liar
right, eli????
but,,,,,so what’s this about the cozi password change? am i just shifting too rapidly between your and my reality???
bet.
no, i blocked you on things after THAT
AND THAT WAS TODAY
oh, and didn’t your friend, my so-called “fighting buddy,” anan…
.just,,,,,fckn block me like i’m useless
trash
randomnly
after all
i asked
was that they
not speak to me
about you?
but YAAAAAAS  twas ONLY Me and simply Myself and just i
who ain’t wanna get….hurt.
hanh?????
oh ,
obvi,
yeaaaaaaa
yeeeei
truuuu,
sooooo
sssssorry,,,,but
calling me “old news” or saying i’m “old too”
don’t forget your girl is 2 yrs older than you
and then staying silent for these few days about changing passwords
that..... already did that, boo
at least i sent alesia third party emails thru the app, boo
she pushin 30 and can only talk you
venuse....????. no....a
talking and
w a l k i ng tragedy
entyway don’t bring that up just to be loud and wrong about that too
you’re not always wrong tho, you know
you’d probably fuck up and slit my throat
 powertripping
when i’m wrong about you
and you can only do that if you
 black and white
me out
to NEVER BE WRONG
AND I DO
ACTUALLLY HATE THAT ABOUT YOU!!!!!
WHY CAN’T I EVER BE WRONG, ELI????
WHY????//
OH your emotions....? about your father that after 6 yrs you didn’t tell me about?
your reality? when you have a habit of projecting?
 and lowkey being dishonest
to yourself first
 and then subsequently
 to me????
your time? when i’m mostly on yours?????
your efforts? like ripping up notes and telling me
“my turn” to get fucked
by you
was over
when the only reason i was tiredt
was bc i crashed
too tiredt after explaining to You
that
i‘m not even going to LET you play middleman
for a baby pushign 30????
oh. bet.
but since we’re being transparent:
here are receipts with timestamps:
http://microhealer.tumblr.com/tagged/hop-hop-hop-hop
http://microhealer.tumblr.com/tagged/hop+hop+bun
http://microhealer.tumblr.com/tagged/hop-hop-bunny
yea you must love dirty laundry
oh.
but that’s what i knew about you.
oh:
Tumblr media
be yr own guest my love
i Knew you would ignore the “old news” message since that's literally when you started telling on yourself
you do treat trans partners
 like side hoes,
thasssa wholeBET
and some change
 for you to create
cuz thassssssss
how you feel about me fr fr
so that “like” is mine but
i…..actually really Really love that you laughed tho.
bc i haven’t heard you fully belly laugh in a long time.
if ever iirh.
even after knowing you for 6+ years,
your supposed “first friend “ in the DMV
the person i can trust my life with
the only
you’re my only...
 ,,,,,even after i spiraled
and cut myself for the first time since middle school?
Tumblr media
now my friends are fucking spotting you
and talking to each other
about you
oh, you didn’t know.
but i got mehndi done today
let a summer baby boy
love
a cut up
by me
body
 before noon
today
thinking i’d see you and we could talk like,,,,
…..like real people do.
and you’d be distracted by the design and not zone in
 on the failed cuts
 on my wrist
since i’m shit at not just repeatedly carving into
white meat
when i can only use a ceramic blade
i just didn’t WANT you to
so i never “came home to [you]”
you said that on nov 4th/5th of last year
and
i’ve been looking up bpd all day
eventho i told you
  i don’t trust the internet
sooooo you not telling me
didn’t hel p
but it’snot at all your job to
and i sitll
stilllstil stil stilllca’t see
....and i dind’t want you to see.
bc i’m not just a man.
i’m still femme
which you seem to love to forget
and still soft enough, i think.....
i hope…..or learning to be soft,,,,
where it won’t get me killed,,,,,
but where it still counts.
with…or without you.
either way i’m a man who loves you. a man whose phone died at 28% trying to get you to see that i was trying to be soft even after you called me
 “old news”
but,,,,,.....,,,compared to …..who?????? sh....oooo??????
your new girlfriend who is 1 or 2 years older than you?????
and can’t speak to me
a man who is only barely out of 23???
and instead only whispers
 to you?????
bruh, she’s clearly not fond of me.
and you’re not a liar ,
so don’t
she had to tell you that she wasn’t the one putting out “aggy energy”
specifically
during yennayer which
i ruined
and im still sorru
but which means
she’s probably done it in your apartment on purpose already, boo
didn’t think of that, did you
lingustically.,,,,,nope.
oh, but there’s power in a whisper, darling.
i am just cardinal like you
i am air too.
  i should know
bc i accidentally whistled....and,,,,,,
i only blockedt you so that you wouldn’t “hurt [your] own feelings”
like you told anan you sometimes do.
sooooooooooooo yea... i
did it so you wouldn’t hurt you.
as cardinal water/pisces moons
are prone to do.
you can;t drain
and you can’t drown
ain’t that how i affirmed you
i already hurt me
when i dissociated
and i’m STILL FUCKING sorry
that there was blood that you had to see.
i couldn’t stay in my body long enough to clean fast enough
but i still didn’t want you to hurt you bc of me.
like you did repeatedly
bc of bpd or bc of basically cishet or at least cis ~queer girls
or other partners
like when you were with kat,
who’s still disgustingly attached to a messy white
and now a new black kid.....
or with shushoo.
and how you might with alesia.
no, correction: how you have with alesia.
how you will continue to, if you’re not careful, with alesia.
you’re a lion facing a prince of a house kitten ,....,
.,, who is homeless.
do you feel good, big boss?
all i asked was for you to listen t
o how you were speaking to me
on the phone
at your place of work
and when she’s there
possibly a place of worshiop
..... even after i told you
that i was intentionally putting energy into Not fighting you
and you
  say you
"don’t wanna be a middle person"
but you also….wanna cape for yet another fucking cis girl.
who isn’t even muslim this time.
HOWtragic.
i couldn’t laugh
couldn’t ever laugh at sway
bc by whatever fortune if you do split or don’t
 i still  love you
i love you too much
but in those moments after that phone call….
after my phone died…
and my body couldn’t move to charge it.
wouldn’t move….
and all i could do was cry during the adhan.
bc you’re tooo much like matt now
i wish i knew what it could feel like to
 hate someone
who called you
"OLD NEWS”
compared to a bitch pushing 30
youza WHOLE fuckn clown, dawg.
matt did this same shit
move me out for a new side bitch
yet anotehr cis
look at how cute trans love can be
oh
no
NO
no,
no
no
this is what you give me:
Tumblr media
laughter.
BC what fucking luck.
BUT IT’S gotta be TROOF
  s ince you don’t lie?/?
shit I LAUGHED TOO:
Tumblr media
it sounds like….
NEITHER OF US
KNEW WHAT COULD
HAVE BROUGHT US
HERE, ELI.
maybe you nursing poison in your own home
and telling me i’m making you feel unwelcomed
on a blog and not to my face did it
fuckingggggggggg. why’ald.
you think it’s too much sweat????? false.
that apartment stayed cold.
too many tears?
 ok ok yea troof.
but too much love? forreal?
we?????
ooooop
hoooop!!!
oh, you speakin’ french now. our collective colonizers tongue in 20gayteeeeeeeen?????
CAN’T RELATE
bc I’M TOOOOOO GAY
wow. we ruined it, fam???? fr fr?
nah, chosen fam.
you ruined us.
you ruined us over:
 a cis girl and
your own impatience
and your own anger.
and my slow brain and my slow body
//
i’m not sure she’d find you from maryland
if you dissociated bc your other semi
 but not
girlfriend emotionally abused you
until people who didn’t know you were muslim
thought you were fucking drunk
and you fucking stilllllll
work with her?????
why couldn’t you just wait until she found a new job???
ain’t she trying????
or izzzzzz she??????
hahhnh???
where was the damn rush?????
you’re like two goofy high schoool kids
reaching for the quickest nuts every 6 hours
 like jesus fuck.
you’re irresponsible as shit telling me i’m a grown man making grown decisions and i see this
Tumblr media
?????
unREASONABLE, ELI.
this isn’t a situation of a kettle calling a pot black
 babe
bc i’m actually Black
and you’re not
but she’s black too.
what did i tell you:
"you datin’ two whole Niggas. if you fight me over her, you will lose either way.”
but instead you called me “obtuse”
SAT words for me
but not for you…….what.,,,.,,,,,,,, fckn luck……..
what luck,,,,,that the one person who housed me consistently
and kept me alive
when i trusted no one
would call me "old news”
and let their cis girlfriend
 turn herself into your
personal "healing” …...
sibkid. \\\\
howTragic like all of CC’18
you know what happens when you slip and get sloppy and let a baby bitch be responsible for your healing?
she leaves.
for a real bitch
with microhealing abilities,
GOOFY.
she worships a new goddess every friday?????
well, i know only of orixas
and only of black power
but from what i know of goddesses OFF of OUR continent…
soooon...
at least one of them WILL want a soul from her
just letting you know it might not have to be hers.
…..OH!
and when i chargedt and openedt my phone after days of wandering. ….the last messages from you are:
Tumblr media
YOU SHOULD HAVE SAID “LEAVE [[[[MMMMMYYYYYYY]]]]]] KEYS”
like a fucking baby.
imagine that.
even to you, i’m still a whore.
out…the…bakc….dooor.
??????
i couldn’t even work a john when i wanted to
if i was sad about you.
but imagine?????
a cis-pixie woman older than you
letting you treat her like a child?????
then
imagine me feeling shamed into leaving
bc of pictures of your smiling face
after i cut myself and felt shame
that
in your unwelcomed  to both me and you
BLOOD
 blood
is what brings me back
 to life.
how.
fucking.
why’yald.
i blockedt you so that you didn’t lurk.
bc THat is what you do.
instead of speaking with me,
you seem to have expected me
to read your blog back 7 years.
and just know all of the fatherly things that trigger you.
like…even during the times when i was afraid of my own phone and laptop for 2 months bc of my sister, brother, and birth parents????
funny how i’m the youngest of us “grown folks” and yet still find that really
FUCKING
immature.
of YOU
to do
you really never knew me, or did you…..??
you donated to me before you even knew me.
so i know your heart has parts made of gold.
but now you show off your crystals and your gold.~~~
yep.
here we are.
you’ve "only every seen [me] as a boy.”
ok. bet.
and unti this post:
Tumblr media
i’ve hardly heard you refer to me as a man.
so:
ain’t you late?
ain’t you late, babe??
ain’t you late?
i’m a year younger than you.
which means if you grown
i musta BEEN a man too, boo.
but you’ll always be
 my favorite accomplice
and always be my favorite friend too.
but you cannot think you can play me by calling me
 “old too” or “old news"
for young fish who is basically femme trade
and thinking i won’t cut open a fool.
which coincidentally always happens to be me
she’s hardly out to anybody important and lying at work too.
i must be bigger fool.
bc you knew better and didn’t do better.
but i’m being immature.
  ok ...,.,,.,,
cute.
your pisces moon is keeping you from seeing clearly but that’s what young water seems…to do. to much light reflected; tho it is a fountain of youth.
she’s pushing 30 baby
but true, you’re her boo.
yea, a childish boo.
you ever wonder why her playlist from you had more songs than ours did?
why she can never keep a man around for valentines day?
oh but don’t you love “patterns”, baby????
unless it’s her leaving shit around the apartment
or her triggering you
or her treating your dick like it’s foreign,
even to you.
my gay ass was shookedt
when you told me you voluntarily
triggered yourself
 for her kitty too
but i AM
a grown man
 who is “running” from….you
you think that statement is not…. dishonest??
you really think that statement is true???
i didn’t run. i just
needed space
and you afforded me none.
you couldn’’t afford it.
february is before march which is before april
sooooooo it’s always a tight month ain’t it???????
oooooooh but you afforded her plenty.
she gets to take off her fucking pants while i try to figure out if i should move from a spot next to you….
on your fucking bed.
she took off her pants to climb near you before she could even say hi to
nooonoo
ahh right
and THEN ME.
“Oh, you CAN stay”
that’s what She told me.
and you said nothing.
so i left….the room.
i never run.
you pushed me out with your captain save-a-cis silence.
it’s violence.
and
you’re still pushing and pushing and pushing and pushing
until me…you know
i, the "old news”
just feels like he should just
fucking fall
onto the district streets
and she finds it
to her fucking fancy
to fall
 into your lap
like a damn,,,,zel.
distressedt.
with a roof over her head outside of your apartment too.
woooooooops!
yip, as she is probably prone to do.
her kind….isn’t new….boo.
her kind isn’t new to me
her kind isn’t new to you
you ever wonder why she feels so familiar to you?
she reminds Me of the girl who told you
she could never marry you
and is now trying to date someone just like you
so don’t be so unkind to me
or to you
or be so foolish
as to believe i gave up on you
you gave up on me
and on top of that
you think i just...ran
ran….with what clothing?
the ones you packed up for me and left at the door
that i was suppose to pick up
and slide out the back….like a fucking whore?
you just tryna be
a cissie's bae
who stay clownin on trans folks now?
oooooooh issa bet, mo
. i mean.,,,.,,.mhhhh i guess?

Rating: Teen/Mature Timeline: Season 6 Tags: angst, UST, developing relationship
This is a follow-up to the story “Drown,” and I think it will be a 4-part series all together, moving from seasons 5-8 (probably veering into s8 AU). You don’t need to have read the other story first, but it may help. No beta: sorry. CW for brief references to child death (canonical) and hints at something non-consensual (”Biogenesis”).
For @scully-eats-sushi who wanted more.

In their sixth year together, the world seems conspiring to mock her with nightmarish gestations: a slimy umbilicus down her throat, vomited out onto a freezing metal grate; a monstrous eruption from a man’s chest in the desert; a backyard of unearthed infant corpses, thrown away like trash. And perhaps most painful, the cruel incubation of Mulder’s once-dead relationship with another woman, rekindled.
Still, she thinks, he tries. Drugged, he tells her he loves her and it is like a fist gripping her insides. She brushes it off, heart pounding, and he never brings it up again. A few weeks later, she tests him—mentions dogs and kids and houses—and he play-acts dumbfounded, as if what she suggests were the truly alien, and not this midnight goose-chase. She doesn’t need the suburbs. Doesn’t want them, even. But she aches for a shared space, for a heavy arm over her waist when she wakes and two coffee mugs in the sink before work. She wants the car to take them to a cabin by a lake, not to Area 51; she longs for its trunk to be full of sunscreen and sleeping bags instead of case notes and clandestine emails. Not every time: she doesn’t need it always. But sometimes the desire to not be alone is overwhelming.
Christmas will be hard for her, he knows, so he distracts her with a ghost hunt that turns more real than he’d expected. Afterward, she shows up at his door and they grin and gift to each other, and it’s the best holiday he’s had in years. Maybe since childhood. He senses that she’s opening to him again, and he’s almost brave enough to do something about it. He settles for a kiss to her temple, on pulling her head against his chest while snow falls outside and colorful paper litters his coffee table. She takes a deep breath, nose to his solar plexus, and he feels her relax. They fall asleep, curled into each other. She’s late to her mother’s house in the morning.
In another hospital she almost dies, and he breaks down at her bedside again without her knowing. He sobs into the sheet at her shoulder and wonders how long he can keep himself from her, from scooping her to him and turning away from the work and the darkness and the car that drives the endless road. “I’m sorry,” he whispers into her hospital gown. “I’m sorry I can’t give you what you need.” But she sleeps and sleeps and doesn’t hear. Later, when she’s awake, he toys with her thumb and tells her that maybe death only finds you when you seek its opposite. It’s his timid, cryptic way of acknowledging her desire for life, perhaps even her desire for him. It’s all he’s able to give that day.
Cassandra Spender re-appears, Diana Fowley wedges dangerously between them again, and the Syndicate burns. Two weeks later, seeking death’s cause and unwittingly finding its opposite, Scully delivers a baby during a hurricane and comes face to face, once again, with all the losses she’s tried to forget.

When the weather cleared, they drove the hour-long trek to the airport in soggy silence. Mulder sensed the weight of something—heavy—pressing between them, something besides the fiasco with Diana. Their flight was delayed, as were many others, because of the storms, so they sat uncomfortably in a crowded airport bar and grill. Mulder tugged at the two hanging drawstrings of his raincoat, wondering what he might have done to upset her. The star profiler, befuddled as usual by the complexities of his partner, blinded by his singular focus, was at a loss when he looked at her.
“Scully,” he said finally.
In a daze in front of her tuna melt and side salad, she at first didn’t respond. He said her name again and she looked up. “Yeah?”
“What’s up?”
Scully frowned, not knowing how to respond. What could she possibly say to him over bad food in a south Florida airport restaurant that could capture the thing that sat on her chest all day, every day? The men who’d kidnapped her, violated her, tried to kill her with cancer, created then murdered her child, and left her barren—almost all were all dead, but would never be brought to justice. She was entangled in a partnership with someone who would die for her, but who didn’t seem capable of intimate connection, unless it was with busty brunettes who worked for his enemies. And she’d spent the morning reliving in her head the miracle of childbirth that she’d witnessed first hand, trying to forget about the fact that it was a thing her body would never have a chance to do, no matter how much she wanted it. So she was running low on hope, running low on motivation. She poked at her salad and said, “Nothing, it’s fine.”
Her frown echoed back at her on Mulder’s face. “Scully, please. Talk to me.”
She considered briefly what he might do if she said all these things, though she was sure he knew them already. What he was asking for was a simple answer, and she had no such thing to offer. She shrugged. “It’s the same as ever, Mulder. I’m just...” she sighed. “I’m struggling to strike a balance between happiness in my work and being heartsick for all the things I’ve lost. Nothing new.” There. He could make of that what he would.
“You’re not happy in your work?”
Scully’s eyes closed and she shook her head. Of course that’s all he heard. “No, Mulder, I am happy in my work. I love what we do.” Flat, toneless.
“So, then…”
She wouldn’t help him; he could put together the other pieces on his own.
---
Perhaps out of some perverse misinterpretation of her distress, Mulder decided that playing house would be a good idea. The day after her birthday, they dressed in pastel and khaki to role-play in what felt like a vulgar mockery of what he seemed to think she wanted. “You know, you’d fit in really well here,” he said, and it was like an elbow in the kidney. He wouldn’t stop touching her, even once tried to kiss her, but it was all of it a cruel joke. She found herself slipping too easily into wanting to touch him back—a lingering pat on the hand, then her own fingers quickly jumping away when his eyes found her face. It could have been fun, she thought, this trash-monster suburban-horror case, but instead it just hurt. His eye-waggle as he patted the bed beside him—what would he have done if she’d wiped off her facemask and slid into that tiny space beside him? Or if she’d dropped her robe and straddled him right there, facemask and all? He’d have panicked and run, choked on his own innuendo.
But she didn’t want another case to end in awkward silence en route to an airport, so in their rented minivan on the way out of Arcadia, she spoke before the heaviness could settle between them.
“You know I’d never want to live in a place like that, don’t you? You can’t think I’d actually fit in there.”
“Why not, Scully? Nice houses, nice people…”
“Nice people?”
“Big Mike was nice.”
“Mulder, that place was like Stepford. What the hell makes you think I’d want that?”
“I…” but his mouth just hung open for a moment. “I don’t know,” he said. He was tired of guessing and being wrong.
“That’s not what having a life means to me, Mulder.” She was tired of his guessing and being wrong too.
“Then what…”
But he never finished the question, and she never answered.
---
He read Padgett’s “novel” in a state of both arousal and rage, the one feeding the other. How dare this man, this stranger, see her this way? How dare he be right when Mulder was always so wrong? She’d been sitting on his bed, goddamnit. About to fuck another killer, maybe, while Mulder waited for her two rooms away.
And then, “Agent Scully is already in love.”
Her face: inscrutable.
Later, in his arms, she sobbed like he’d never heard, and he squeezed her small body to him, desperate for the thump of her heart against his own. He rocked her, sat back on the floor to hold her closer yet. His hand went inside her shirt, up her back to feel her hot skin, to feel her heart beating from both sides of her ribcage. “You’re okay,” he whispered. “Shh, you’re okay. I’m here.”
“Mulder,” she whimpered into his chest, bloodying him everywhere and he didn’t mind. Of course her love was his, and how terribly uncareful he’d been with it, how stupidly, recklessly thoughtless. But then, how dangerous the pull of this thing now… He couldn’t help it. He kissed the top of her head and let himself feel, for once, the overwhelming current of his own love for her. When her breathing slowed, he cupped her face in his palms and kissed her mouth, just once, just briefly.
She looked at him with such vulnerability, he wondered if he’d made a mistake. How could he possibly shoulder the weight of that need? How could he give of himself to her, when he was needed in so many other ways? Rather than collapse under its burden and run, as he may have done months ago, he embraced it—embraced her, again. “I’m here,” he repeated, and he felt the shuddering heaviness of her sigh that emptied into his now-bloody shirt. Somewhere in his chest, something loosened. It was his death grip on the truth, he realized later, his fierce and desperate commitment to the Only Thing That Matters. And most surprising to him, he found that in the space created by that loosening grip, something else found its way in. Something like hope. Something like a future.
_+_
On a warm Saturday in April, he tries again not once, but twice. First in their office, he finds a lazy excuse to spend time with her—hurled clichés and a stolen mouthful of her frozen dessert, when he’d rather taste her mouth. They’re going to kiss, he knows it; he can feel it in his toes like the moments before a sneeze. But then he spots an out for himself, and, coward that he is, he runs again. He leaves her disappointed with melted sugar on her hands.
Second try: evening. Stars in the sky, the smell of suede from her jacket, the feel of her ass against his hips, crack! crack! of the bat, and she is giggling again, god help him. This is the best he’s ever felt. He is beginning to get it, he thinks: together like this, it hurts less. Maybe, just maybe, he doesn’t need to torture himself like some ascetic in order to deserve his victories. Maybe, just maybe, love makes him stronger instead of an easy target. In the parking lot he kisses her again, a real kiss this time, with one hand tucked into the curve of her waist and another in her hair. He is weak-kneed with want for this woman. Her mouth opens under him and he groans into it. How could he have known it would feel like this? It scares him and he lets her go. She lays her palm to his chest, closes her eyes for a moment, then gets in her car and drives away.
In shared hallucination, they recognize their codependency, their perfect complementarity. Hand to muddy hand across a bouncing ambulance car, they confirm their faultless symmetry.
And then he is sick, is hearing voices, is collapsing in a stairwell. She calls him and hears the worst thing, the very worst: that other woman’s voice that says “Fox” in that breathy way. She asks, but he won’t say who’s there, just tells her it’s okay (it is decidedly not okay; she knows who is there). He hangs up on her and then the other woman is suddenly naked and climbing into bed with him and he tries to tell her no, but his head hurts so so badly and he can’t stop any of this and he wants to cry out for his partner and feel her cool hand on his head, but he can’t, and then there is darkness.
When Skinner calls her “Dana,” she knows it is very bad. She learns, none too subtly, that the other woman was with him in the night. He screams her last name, his always-cry of desperation, and he can see himself through her eyes, through the fuzzy gray monitor, but he can’t hear her thoughts alone through all the terrible noise.
Then, as he did for her, she is flying across the world to save him. She is standing in warm sand (not ice) on a spaceship that is, though she does not know it, knitting her inner scars back together into smooth flesh, that is healing healing her, deep on the inside where what she thought she’d lost comes back awake. She is learning the secrets of all life’s origins while, inside her, originating cells come back to life.

Perspective Application of the Circular Economy in the Blue Biotechnology: Microalgae as Sources of Health Promoting Compounds
 Authored by  Igor Fernandes*
Tumblr media
Introduction
Algae belong to a wide range of photosynthetic organisms that grow in aquatic environments (rivers, oceans and lakes) [1- 3]. They are commonly classified into microalgae (unicellular and simple multicellular structures) and macroalgae (complex multicellular structures) depending on their size and cellular organization. Microalgae are microscopic single cells which may be prokaryotic (e.g. cyanobacteria) or eukaryotic (e.g. green algae) [1- 3]. Furthermore, they are photoautotrophic microorganisms with the ability to use solar energy, reduce inorganic carbon to organic matter and producing biomass simultaneously [4].
Additionally, they are a good source of biochemical compounds, such as, polysaccharides, lipids, proteins, vitamins and pigments, which can be extracted through several conventional techniques (e.g. maceration, aqueous and Soxhlet extraction) [1,3,5]. Finally, the existence of natural products with strong antioxidant activity augments the economical and nutritional potential for food, pharmaceutical, and nutraceutical industry [1].
The trend in microalgal market is the production of biomass as a source of added value compounds [1,2]. The biomass can be used in several fields, like development of cosmetics for the treatment of skin disorders (e.g. aging and tanning), production of bioactive compounds in pharmaceuticals (e.g. vaccines that can be administered orally), production of low-cost natural-based biofertilizers and manufacture of biofuels (e.g. biodiesel, bioethanol and biohydrogen) [1,2]. Microalgae are crucial for human health as they are a source of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), which have shown to be effective in the prevention and treatment of several diseases [6]. PUFAs, especially omega 3 PUFAs (α-linolenic acid: C18:3n-3; EPA: C20:5n-3 and DHA: C22:6n-3), are widely used in the prevention and treatment of cancer, type 2 diabetes and several cardiovascular diseases [6].
Agro-Industrial Residues
Nowadays, there is a worldwide interest in the production of microalgae combined with agro-industrial residues, to reduced costs and promote circular economy, however this is an area that requires further development [7]. Additionally, the exhaustion of fossil fuels and the effects of global warming has increased the interest in renewable sources that could replace non-renewable energy (e.g. cropping residues, sugar beet bagasse, cardoon-waste, tomato-waste, spent coffee-grounds, [8] cheese whey and corn steep liquor [9]).
Agro-industrial residues consist of lignocellulose, a compact and partly crystalline structure, which is a combination of linear crystalline polysaccharides (e.g. cellulose), branched non-cellulosic and non-crystalline heteropolysaccharides (hemicelluloses) and branched lignin (non-crystalline) [10]. The agro-industrial residues can be used by several industrial fields since they are cheap, abundant and can provide environmental and economic benefits [10]. When discarded in the environment, these by-products release a large amount of nutrients (considered inorganic pollutants), such as, nitrogen and phosphorus [9]. These environmental disposal problems can be used as an alternative culture medium in the production of microalgae [10,11]. Furthermore, it is possible to obtain algal biomass with significant added value that could be used in the manufacture of several pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and nutritional supplements [9,13]. One of the limitations is that most microalgae cannot directly ingest and assimilate these residues, because of their complex composition (e.g. polysaccharides, proteins and fatty acids) [14]. Therefore, the transformation and modification of these agro-industrial residues may be required, which is fulfilled through physical (e.g. milling [10]and muffle furnace [15]) chemical (e.g. use of organic solvents [16]) and enzymatic processes [13,17] resulting in easy to-assimilate hydrolysates [14].
Several studies have the purpose of determining the efficiency of agriculture and industry residues on the growth of different species of microalgae. For example, Chlorella vulgaris was cultured in cheese whey (CW, 10 gL-1 lactose), 1% corn steep liquor (CC) and 2% vinasse (CV) under autotrophic (CA) and mixotrophic conditions to determinate the biomass, protein and carbohydrates content [9]. C. vulgaris cultivated in a culture medium supplemented with 1% CC showed the maximum biomass concentration (2.10 gL- 1), whereas in a culture medium supplemented with CW vinasse exhibited a significant decrease in biomass (1.60 gL-1 and 0.77 gL- 1, respectively) [9].
C. vulgaris cultured with CC has achieved the highest protein content (43.33%) whereas with the other by-products obtained a half-protein content (CW: 23.20%; CV: 22.23%) [9]. Conversely, C. vulgaris cultured with CW obtained a higher carbohydrates content (44.85%) than CA and CV (39.34% and 36.50%, respectively) and a double the amount of carbohydrates compared to CC (25.41%) [9].
Additionally, C. vulgaris was cultivated under photoautotrophic and mixotrophic conditions using a hydrolysed cheese whey powder solution to evaluate the maximum biomass production and the content of lipids, carotenoids and pigments [13]. Results shown that C. vulgaris cultivated under mixotrophic conditions presented biomass content with a 2.9-fold increase compared to photoautotrophic conditions (3.58 gL-1 and 1.22 gL-1, respectively) [13]. On the other hand, C. vulgaris cultivated under photoautotrophic conditions has given higher levels of lipids, pigments and carotenoids (42%, 0.74% and 0.23%, respectively) [13].
The potential of industrial cane molasses as a carbon source for the growth of Chlorella zofingiensis was studied under heterotrophic conditions to determinate the lipids, ketocarotenoid astaxanthin content, and fatty acid profile [18]. According to the results, C. zofingiensis cultured with different concentrations of pre-treated molasses achieved a biomass, lipid and astaxanthin productivities of 1.55 gL-1 day-1, 0.71 gL-1 day-1 and 1.7 mgL-1 day-1, respectively [18]. Besides the fatty acid profile of C. zofingiensis has higher levels of polyunsaturated fatty acids then monounsaturated fatty acids and the highest percentage of polyunsaturated fatty acids (49.16%) was obtain with the concentration of 5 gL-1 sugar [18]. Furthermore, palmitic acid, hexa-decadienoic acid, oleic acid, linoleic acid and α-linolenic were the major fatty acids presented in C. zofingiensis profile and represented more than 85% of total fatty acids [18].
The efficiency of two organic carbon sources, residual corn crop hydrolysate and corn silage juice on the growth, were studied (biomass and lipids content and fatty acids profile) under heterotrophic, photoautotrophic and mixotrophic conditions in a bacteria-Chlorella sp. Consortium [14]. Results shown that maximum microalgal biomass (0.8 gL-1) was obtained with 1 gL-1 of residual corn crop hydrolysate whatever the trophic conditions [14]. Under mixotrophic conditions, the use of residual corn crop hydrolysate led to an increase of 21 and 22% in the biomass produced in comparison to silage juice [14]. Additionally, this increase varied between 11 and 28% under heterotrophic conditions [14].
Chlorella sp. cultured under photoautotrophic conditions accumulated almost 30% of total lipids, which was higher than under heterotrophic and mixotrophic conditions (7% and 15%, respectively) [14]. According to the fatty acid profile, Chlorella sp. presented the highest concentration of fatty acids under mixotrophic conditions in residual corn crop hydrolysate (15.5 mg g-1 dry weight) whereas the lowest was under heterotrophic conditions with silage juice (0.21 mg g-1 dry weight) [14]. Under photoautotrophic conditions, the major classes of lipids in Chlorella sp. fatty acid profile were palmitic, gamma-linolenic and α-linolenic fatty acids, which represented almost 90% of the total fatty acids measured [14]. In mixotrophic and heterotrophic cultures the relative composition of the major fatty acids diversified, as palmitoleic, stearic and oleic acids were not detected [14].
In another study, Chlorella vulgaris and Scenedesmus quadricauda were grown in absence and presence of different humic-like substances extracted from agro-industrial wastes (digestate from the waste of an agro-livestock farm (D-HL), oil extraction residues from rape B-HL, Brassica napus and tomato residues (T-HL)) to evaluate their biomass, lipids, carbohydrates, chlorophylls content and fatty acid profile [14]. The cultivation of C. vulgaris and S. quadricauda in a culture medium supplemented with 100 mgL-1 of D-HL led to an increase in the biomass compared to BG11 (control) culture medium with 41% and 31% for C.vulgaris and S. quadricauda, respectively [16]. On the other hand, the cultivation in 100 mg L-1 of T-HL produced 29% and 21% fold increase for C. vulgaris and S. quadricauda and all other cases the biomass production was not significantly different [16]. The total lipid content of both species increased in the presence of HLs under all experimental conditions [16]. Besides that, C. vulgaris cultured with B-HL (both concentrations) and D-HL2 presented a 10% decrease in comparison with the control [16].
In S. quadricauda, the presence of the HLs induced an increase of the lipid content, with significant higher values than observed for the control [16]. Furthermore, for both species, B-HL (both doses) led to an increase of the total carbohydrate content compared with the control [16]. Regarding the monosaccharides, in C. vulgaris the treatment with B-HL1 and B-HL2 induced an increase in the glucose content (19.18% and 17.79%, respectively) compared with control (15.27%).and a large increase in galactose content [16].
Moreover, the treatment with B-HLs led to a similar behaviour at both concentrations regarding glucose, whereas an increase in galactose and xylose was obtained only at the lowest and highest concentrations, respectively [16]. Furthermore, B-HLs led to an increase in both chlorophylls a and b in both species, in comparison with the control [16]. Contrarily, treatment with D-HLs and T-HLs induced, in general, a decrease in the total carbohydrates and chlorophylls content for both microalgae [16].
Regarding C. vulgaris cultivated in BG11, the fatty acid profile contained mainly palmitic (34.5%), oleic (11.7%), stearic (7.6%), linoleic (5.87%), elaidic (5.47%) and alpha-linoleic (4.41%) acids [15]. The treatment with D-HLs and T-HLs led to a reduction in the palmitic, stearic and oleic acids and simultaneously increased the quantity of linoleic and alpha-linoleic acids [16]. On the other hand, treatment with B-HLs induced an increase in linoleic acid content and a decrease in palmitic and stearic acids [16].
With respect to S. quadricauda cultivated in BG11, it contained mainly palmitic (23.44%), oleic (12.42%), alpha-linoleic (10.86%) and linoleic (8.85%) acids [16]. In S. quadricauda, the treatment with D-HLs increased the unsaturated fatty acids (gamma-linolenic, alpha-linolenic and linolenic acids) relatively with the control [16]. Moreover, with the addition of B-HL1 it was observed an increase of the saturated fatty acids, particularly palmitic (24.01%), behenic (2.41%), myristic (1.93%) and stearic (1.37%) acids [16].
Conclusion
Nowadays there is an increasing demand to produce microalgae due to the production of high value compounds. Furthermore, these microorganisms can assimilate, in some extend, inorganic pollutants that are produced by agronomical industry and therefore promote a circular economy. Agro-industrial residues are considered one of the largest sources of wastes in the world, which could release a large amount of inorganic pollutants that promote the deterioration of the environment and the loss of potentially valuable materials. These residues are constituted by several minerals, such as, magnesium, iron and potassium which are important to human health.
The production of microalgae using agro-industrial wastes can be considered as a feasible strategy to mitigate the environmental problems caused by the disposal of these residues and decreasing the production costs of microalgae biomass. Furthermore, agroindustrial residues are widely abundant and inexpensive, making them an ideal material to increase the nutritional potential of microalgae for the food, pharmaceutical and nutraceutical industries.

It has not been a great year for television so far.
There have been plenty of treats, to be sure, and even some real treasures. But compared to the way 2017 seemed to haul out new classics with astonishing regularity (to the degree that I couldn’t rank them when it came time to make a list), 2018 has featured a lot of shows where my recommendation comes with a caveat, or where I love it but plenty of my critical comrades despise it, or something like that.
This is fine, in many ways. TV criticism was defined too long by the idea that there were a simple handful of good shows, and critics could mostly agree on them. It’s exciting to get away from that era in some way, to argue about if Westworld is magnificent or malarkey, to discuss whether The Handmaid’s Tale is incisive or exploitative.
But it also means lists like these require far more grains of salt than they might have in the past. So here, presented alphabetically, are 24 TV shows from the first half of 2018 that I gave four stars or more and that have stuck around in my memory in the time since they aired. I hope you like them! But maybe you won’t! And since the TV year typically features more good shows in its first half than its second (due to the Emmys falling in September), my year-end list will likely feature almost all of these shows.
(A few caveats: I typically use the summer to catch up on stuff I missed, so some shows that aren’t here almost certainly will be come December. And I’ve tried to limit this to shows that aired six or more episodes in 2018 so far, cutting out some other favorites. I’ve made a list of things that missed due to one or the other of these caveats at the bottom of this article.)

One of the best final seasons I’ve ever seen, the last 10 episodes of The Americans circled back to what the spy drama had always been about — whether this unlikely marriage between two KGB spies pretending to be ordinary Americans could survive all of the things threatening to rip it apart. The series finale is a pitch-perfect cap to six years of bleak but beautiful television.
How to watch it: The Americans is available for digital purchase, or on FX’s streaming platforms. It will eventually be on Amazon Prime.

The second installment of American Crime Story after 2016’s The People vs. O. J. Simpson was less immediately arresting. But its depiction of ’90s America is just as impressive, tracing the circuitous route of serial killer Andrew Cunanan backward from his most famous victim through a gay scene struggling not to be forced back in the closet. Darren Criss’s work as Cunanan is masterful.
How to watch it: American Crime Story is available for digital purchase, or on FX’s streaming platforms. It will eventually be on Netflix.

Donald Glover’s laconically loopy trip through the titular city grew bolder and more confident in its second season, as the characters endlessly debated ideas of what it means to be “fake” versus “real.” The season’s standout was the darkly funny horror tale “Teddy Perkins,” about the legacies of child abuse, but every episode stands as a pitch-perfect, beautifully honed gem.
How to watch it: Atlanta is available for digital purchase, or on FX’s streaming platforms. It will eventually be on Hulu.

So far, 2018 has been a year of uneasy comedies, of stories that are ostensibly funny but hide something dark and sad at their core. No “comedy” embraced this idea more than Barry, about a hitman who would be an actor, played by Bill Hader. The show is terrifically funny, especially in its depiction of the fringes of show business, but what sticks with you is Barry’s inability to change.
How to watch it: Barry is available for digital purchase, or on HBO’s streaming platforms.

A riotous trip through the deleterious effects of income inequality, Billions had its best, most cutting season this year, as the show blew up its own premise (by burying the investigation that had always been at its center), then spent the rest of its season vamping for time by digging into the ways those with money and power seem utterly oblivious to those without those qualities in the 2010s.
How to watch it: Billions is available for digital purchase, or on Showtime’s streaming platforms.

You like fish? This has so many fish!
How to watch it: Blue Planet II is available for digital purchase, or on BBC America’s streaming platforms. It will eventually be available on Netflix.

A deeply funny dark comedy about the cost of working for a terrible company, Corporate is one of the most visually audacious shows of the year, turning the workplace comedy into an excuse to indulge in gray, chilly frames, in the style of David Fincher. Somehow, that only makes the jokes, about the dehumanization inherent in trying to hold down a corporate job, even funnier.
How to watch it: Corporate is available for digital purchase, or on Comedy Central’s streaming platforms.

For whatever reason, 2018 has been full of terrific spy dramas, but this one seemed to get a bit lost in the shuffle. Starring Oscar winner J.K. Simmons, it tells the story of a world that split in two late in the Cold War, with the second universe, initially a copy of our own, slowly becoming more and more different. Forget just having one great J.K. Simmons performance. Counterpart had two.
How to watch it: Counterpart is available for digital purchase, or on Starz’s streaming platforms.

This satirical comedy, set on the campus of a predominantly white college, but focusing primarily on the school’s black students, hit another level in its second season. The show crystallizes Trump-era racism — just a new face on a very old American horror — through its storytelling and especially its visuals. The eighth episode, structured as one long conversation, is a marvel.

I include the “season one” here in hopes that it’s unnecessary. Netflix has made noise about following up this dark British comedy with a second season, but doing so would be self-defeating, as this first season tells its story so perfectly that to tack on more would feel wrong. So watch this gem of a miniseries about a teenage sociopath and the girl he can’t bring himself to kill before it gets all screwed up.

The space-faring political drama tightened the screws and ratcheted up the tension in its third installment, which collapses a full novel and a half from the book series it’s based on into a single season of television. Complete with memorable guest arcs from David Strathairn and Elizabeth Mitchell, the series finally dug into the true nature of the mysterious alien presence in our solar system.
How to watch it: The Expanse is available for digital purchase, or on Syfy’s streaming platforms. It will eventually be available on Amazon Prime.

The comedy about women wrestlers and the basic cable TV show that broadcast them to the greater Los Angeles metropolitan area has a bit more sprawl than it knew what to do with in its second season. But the show is so open-hearted and generous to its characters that it doesn’t matter. Its stories of women navigating men’s spaces and womanhood as a kind of performance make for riveting television.

Already brutal and bruising, The Handmaid’s Tale became even more so in its second season. It removed some of the cold comforts of the first season to examine how living in a totalitarian society inevitably means that you become complicit in at least some of its horrors, even as those horrors are being visited upon you. Elisabeth Moss and Yvonne Strahovski are fantastic as they navigate a society set up to oppress them.

This stand-up set is a must-see, as Australian comedian Gadsby sets up a long series of punchlines that then resolve into a complete deconstruction of jokes and who gets to tell them in a society filled with fatal power imbalances. It’s funny, yes, but also filled with a scorching fury that finally resolves in a sense that to do better, we have to tear apart every assumption we have.

I’ve always enjoyed this rural noir about two best friends who solve strange mysteries in and around the American South. But the third season, which features the two of them taking on the Klan, felt like the show turning a corner into its examination of how much America is defined by its gruesome past and how little any of us are willing to pay attention to that. Naturally, Sundance canceled it after the season aired.

The CW’s daffy and inventive telenovela has always been some of my favorite TV comfort food. But in its fourth season, it somehow became something even more, leaning into storylines that underlined the show’s themes of family, perseverance, and love. It’s rare for a TV show to do a “character might have cancer” arc that doesn’t feel like a cheat, but Jane more than pulled it off.

Here’s another terrific spy drama, this one focused on a bored spy (Sandra Oh) who finds herself intrigued — and then maybe even more — by her new quarry, a mysterious assassin (Jodie Comer). Killing Eve takes tropes you’ve seen a million times and makes them feel new again, and it’s the first TV show in ages to remind me of my beloved, dearly departed Hannibal.

The Looming Tower is dry and occasionally impenetrable. But I ended up loving the way this miniseries about the build-up to 9/11 slowly but surely built its case for how US intelligence agencies failed to spot what was right in front of them, leading to one of the biggest tragedies to ever occur on American soil. It’s not an argument for more intelligence work; it’s an argument for smarter intelligence work that remains relevant to this day.

The middle stretch of this season reeled off classic episodes, like the show was in a groove it was never going to leave. What’s more, those episodes are all so recognizable as episodes — from a magic-inflected hour of short stories to a musical — that it became hard not to get caught up in the inventiveness. And the series’s emotional core about sad 20-something magicians trying to bring back the thing that makes them sad (magic) remains rock solid.

The second season of the remake of the 1970s sitcom of the same name is perhaps the most joyful show of the year, as the Alvarez family at its center struggles through life in these United States with heart and hope. You’ll see few TV performances as terrific this year as the work of Justina Machado and Rita Moreno, as a mother and daughter who are never defined by their conflicts.

Ryan Murphy’s final series for FX (before leaving for Netflix) is this delightful, warm ’80s period piece about drag ball culture of the era and the idea of found families among people all across the LGBT spectrum. In particular, the show tells stories about trans women like few TV shows ever have, allowing them to have full lives and desires beyond their transition narratives.

My favorite workplace comedy had maybe its best season with its third run, which both deepens the show’s interest in social issues (including age discrimination, something few TV shows would even think to touch) and also serves as a master class in how to spin romantic and sexual tension across an entire season of a TV series. When all of its stories came together in the finale, it felt almost magical.

More than 100 men sail into the Arctic in the mid-1800s, sure they’ll win glory for the British crown by discovering the Northwest Passage. None of them return, and this miniseries (the first in a new anthology series under the banner of The Terror), based on a Dan Simmons novel, imagines what might have happened to them, utilizing both historical research and a mighty monster to tell its tale. It’s grim and unrelenting but also starkly beautiful.

Two sisters return to their Los Angeles neighborhood in the wake of their mother’s death, then vow to keep the bar she ran open to preserve their neighborhood in the face of gentrification. This lively half-hour drama examines ideas of identity, sexuality, and class consciousness, but never in a way that feels didactic. Instead, it offers heart, humor, and a touch of magical realism.

The Good Fight CBS All Access
12 Monkeys and Channel Zero are other Syfy treats I’ve highly recommended in the past, but I’ve been able to catch up with neither so far. The CW’s Crazy Ex-Girlfriend technically aired six episodes in 2018 (exactly six), but I really want to see where it’s going with its current story arc. CBS All Access’s The Good Fight is one I just haven’t caught up with yet, to the consternation of my friends. NBC’s The Good Place will surely be on my year-end list but only aired five episodes in 2018 so far. I loved HBO’s The Tale, a searing story about the aftermath of sexual abuse, but it already made our “best movies of 2018 so far” list. And someday I will finish Netflix’s Wild Wild Country, but I liked what I saw.
