when the kids feel tired or bored he’s there to cheer them up with silly dances or songs, and when they’re ready to learn you provide the kindest, most patient heart to help them improve in their studies.

it’s quite obvious how affectionate you are, not only to the children but to each other. staring into each other’s eyes between class transitions, lingering brushes on your hands when passing each other alphabet worksheets, you even have the cutest picture collages of each other on your desks, something the kids take notice of very quickly. expect to be bombarded with intense questions the next morning.

“miss jaeger, you and mr. eren have the same last name!”

“are you brother and sister?”

“noooo! they’re married!”

“do you hug and kiss?”

eren’s first gaze always falls over to your rosy cheeks and wide eyes after those kinds of questions, simpering in confidence as he responds. He rubs the child’s head, ruffling their hair back with the most “innocent” smirk.

Hotel Artemis (2018) Dir. Drew Pearce

It’s 2028. In the midst of a riot that is sweeping through Los Angeles, criminals take refuge in Hotel Artemis – a hotel/hospital for criminals. Staffed by The Nurse (Jodie Foster) and Everest (Dave Bautista), Hotel Artemis faces a challenging night as organised crime leader Niagra (Jeff Goldblum) is checked in by his son (Zachary Quinto) and a gang of mobsters, alongside hitwoman Nice (Sofie Boutella), Bank Robbers Waikiki (Sterling K Brown) and Honolulu (Bryan Tyree Henry), and all-round asshole Acapulco (Charlie Day.)

I mention the entire cast of this movie in my summary. I think it is important to do this to demonstrate that the cast of Hotel Artemis is strong. So strong.

The intensity of Sterling K Brown, the implicit violence of Sofia Boutella, the Jeff Goldblum of Jeff Goldblum; this is a cast that should make any movie incredible, anchored by Jodie Foster who creates a character who is a complex balance of hardness and vulnerability. This cast is so good that the movie couldn’t possibly fail.

And yet.

It isn’t so much that Hotel Artemis fails completely. It just about meets the mark of a claustrophobic, chaotic action thriller, like David Fincher’s Panic Room (2002) – but the concept of “Hotel for criminals and hitmen” deserved more than this. Drew Pearce has presented a sub-par plot with an above average cast, resulting in the most middle-of-the-road movie I’ve seen since literally any Avengers movie. There are moments where the film is stylish. Jeff Goldblum’s dandy-like glamour contrasts with Jodie Foster’s aggressively drab nurse’s uniform, drawing our attention to the tensions between their characters – but these are alongside moments where the film is pedestrian and obvious. The mentioning of “The Wall” between Mexico and America seemed unnecessary and draws the audience’s attention to how far removed the picture is from reality. The Nurse’s continual references to the 80s and 70s are a little grating, too, as these suggest that she was born in at least the 60s, making her almost 70 at the time the film is set – this is a small bugbear, but it highlights what Hotel Artemis lacks – attention to detail.

The world of the film is built with a spade, not a chisel. Foster lists the “rules” of Hotel Artemis, hammering them home to the viewer multiple times during the film’s 94 minutes. The use of place names as code names for “members” of the Hotel is laboured and uninteresting. A hotel full of hitmen is fertile ground for clever writing, witty dialogue and unexpected violent punchlines – all of which Hotel Artemis failed to muster. Perhaps it is the Hotel setting that makes me think this, but I almost wished that the subject had been explored by Wes Anderson as a dark comedy, rather than this basic box-ticking action movie.

It wasn’t all bad; part of the problem was actually that the film was too short. The structure of “the night where everything goes wrong” felt disappointing with such a rich premise. I would have liked to see the Hotel running normally, and to have had the opportunity to start caring for the characters before they started killing each other. The dialogue wasn’t painful, just forgettable – I can’t remember any lines that stood out. Jodie Foster’s character was a highlight, and genuinely compelling, but Sofia Boutella’s was disappointingly one-note: we’ve all seen a hitwoman in a red dress. This was a wasted opportunity to present audiences with a new interpretation of “hitwoman.”

This was a fantastic idea for a film, with a mind-blowing cast, all squished into a stereotyped, predictable story that fails to realise the potential of its own plot.

If there’s something the Jaeger brothers have become familiar with and almost known for, it’s smirking. whether it’s used in the most practical or sensual ways, their little smiles will always remind you of the sweet, possibly malicious thoughts roaming through their heads. zeke uses the motion like an excuse. all the time. if anything ever feels out of place or bothers you he’ll throw one your way and within minutes he’s easily forgiven. It’s a trick he’s come to use well on you, positive he can make you shy for him in minutes. Didn’t buy the right brand of cereal? no biggie, he’ll throw a closed-mouth simper at you with a sorry sugar and soon you’re somehow apologizing to him with a kiss on his scruffy cheek. He left the faucet running again? not a problem when he squints his eyes all sweetly as his lips pull up for you, how could you ever blame him? Dawn’s light began to seep through your closed window, neither crisp or clear for drops of rain misted itself above your home and busy streets. If it weren’t for a warm figure curving over you, today would have started out much less desirable.

You shift in your spot, sheets lazily tangled between your partners legs and your own as you’re careful not to wake him. But it’s then you truly notice how peaceful he looks, lightly snoring and mouth slightly ajar. Gently, you place a hand from underneath the blankets to his face, stroking a soothing line across his cheek. The boy’s head subconsciously nuzzles into your palm, feeling it warm his entire body. Within a few minutes his face heats into a soft blush, but he internally argues it’s only from your hand and not from how easily you make him go shy, as he usually does. It’s beyond sweet how he can look so peaceful next to you, with you.

He gently twitches, and finally you find his emerald eyes waking up to yours.

“Hi Er.”

“Hi baby.”

Chuckling at each other’s informality, Eren guides his arms around your waist, pulling you further into the “C” shape he’s formed himself into. His lids close once more, blindly caressing your nose with his own as you brush a few stray strands away from his face, tucking them behind his ears. He hums at the contact, intertwining his leg in yours and you let out a little laugh, honeyed by the mornings raspiness on your throat. God, that’s the laugh he lives for.

You dip your head a little more into his chest, watching the way his sweatshirt releases just a bit of his natural cologne with every snuggle. And when Eren encases himself around you, by heart and body, his heartbeat lulls you back into a light state of pure peace. Never planning to attend or shelter anyone else’s.

Unless it’s his stomach.

With a loud grumble and a quiet groan from yourself, he snickers, leveling his face down to yours.

“Hun, can we get something to eat?” he asks, convincing a part of you with his cheesy smile and gleaming eyes.

“Rennn, i don’t wanna move.”

“I know you don’t baby, and you look so pretty right now. But you know what else looks pretty? A nice stack of pancakes and syrup.”

And your motivation skyrockets.

You adjust yourself in his grip, watching his joking smile change to a frown. You were going to comply to his wishes, but his hold stays rock-solid around you.

“I’m kidding, Im kidding!” he laughs.

“Breakfast can wait another hour.”

kissing vow ~ eren x reader

Dawn quickly rose over the well-known territory. The part of land that was whispered upon for years ever since its fall, and a place strangely familiar to all your ears and hearts even if you hadn’t traveled there yourself. After the trip into the midnight wilderness you had arrived for a mission far greater than any other, and it was clear there were no visible signs of doubt from anyone.

Except for of course, the young boy with more pressure on his chest than anyone, one you cared for very dearly who’d call almost every shot with his actions. He was frightened beyond compare, so as the last few squads stood atop Wall Maria, urgently waiting for any signal, Eren was practically pissing himself right then and there. He had returned, devised a plan with all the leading commanders in just a few days, and was now preparing to risk his life for his homeland and people. There was no moment of rest for him or any of you. Besides the constant worry of succeeding the mission this very well may be the last time any of you see each other again.

You shout out his last name, once, twice, as he was too far in his own head to hear your first call and jog to him, gripping your delicate fingers over his shoulders. In the years you’ve spent together as scouts those small releases of tension-touching had become a clear sign you wanted each other’s attention, and you both caught onto the gesture quite quickly. Eren softened his eyes in your presence to notion just how focused he was on you. His subconscious would always allow his gaze to wander to you and what you had to say, he felt calmer that way.

“I already see you getting all inside your head, I thought talking about this on the journey here would be enough for you?” you whisper, leaning your head a little closer in attempt to understand what possibly was rumbling through his mind now.

“What if we lose”

“What?”

“I can’t bear to see us all lose! If we waited a little longer, a few more days, maybe we could have advised a plan that wouldn’t risk half the corps’ lives!” He tangled his hand in his hair, gripping the shaggy strands already coming loose from the stress he overdrove himself into. Your hands soften against the thick cloth of his cape, frowning at the few tears pricking his eyelids.

“Er, you’re more than welcome to cry to me later, just not now.” you chuckle.

“How are you so sure there’ll be a later y/n.”

You mouth opens before you can process your words, watching his cheek crane over to rest on the back of your hand that still lay against his collar. Here was humanity’s savior more worried than everyone minutes before call, but that you were perfectly fine with. This side to him was all the more proof that he was human, no matter what people labeled his being as.

“How am I sure? Bold of you to question my predictions Jaeger.” you exaggerate, placing your hands on your hips in a sneer. “I’m certain i’ll come back alive, and why? Because your protecting me with ever passionate fiber in your body, just as you will everyone else. You’re fighting for our justice against these monsters, the ones with no mind or cause. You have a cause to fight Eren and you have a heart too, a damn big one if I do say so myself. It’s the reason we support you with in the entireties of our own.”

With that, you intertwine your fingers around his right thumb, softly calloused to the touch he notes time and time again, and place it in front of your mouth to kiss. His body tenses at the feeling, but his eyes widen when he realizes where exactly you’ve placed it, your trust in him, where you’ve unknowingly hinted your years of growing affection for the boy in the heap of a split second.

Over the bitten scars littered down his radial.

He looks at you in confirmation of what he thinks it meant, and smiles into those fierce doe eyes of yours. A genuine emotion he hasn’t felt in months through grieving and loss, but could so easily melt into again with you.

So yes, he held a dangerous power, but it was all his. Something his true self was a part of that no one should ever neglect, and he found all the support he needed within the soldier right before him.

“Knock em dead Ren, do your best for everyone who’s lived and who will continue to. None of us would be standing here without you, so your presence alone is precious to us...

...We all believe in you, I believe in you.”

You guide his palm to your cheek, nuzzling into its claminess. As he engraves the plush feeling of his fingertips to your skin, a green smoke signal is fired.

And even when Eren was positive not everyone could be saved, he was reminded the ones following the biggest goals in the end would persevere and care for each other just as you had for him. He was confident you’d all succeed that way.

Like Armin now does over Commander Erwin,

Or little Gabi rather than Sasha, no matter what unjust brainwashing she believes.

But him or you, who would risk their own life caring for whom they loved most?

That was one thing he never wanted to find out.

Now he slouches in a rotten, stoned cell, contemplating what could’ve changed if only he had tried a little harder, or had this all been fate from the start?

His hand resting in his lap catches his glance, peering down at the bite marks still evident across his thumb. Surely if the marks he made as a teen persisted your kiss would too.

He slowly brings his hand up, cautious of any guards mistaking the move for another transformation, and presses his lips against the same spot you had. He closes his eyes at the warmth, sensing it was still emitting from your own lingering touch years ago. Unfortunately there had been no more little kisses, subtle clues of affection from either of you ever since. He liked those hints he really did, but now he was sure you stood a few floors above him, devising a plan to put an end to his scheme rather than caring over his emotions.

Weren’t you the one who told him to keep going though?

Perhaps if he had told you his motives beforehand rather than keeping them inside. How he appreciated every act of tenderness you gave him, more than anything he’s experienced before, how all this time he’s fought on this battlefield people called the world, for you and everyone else. Maybe then you’d stay out of his way and let him succeed, but his actions had no time for feelings or explanations. The freedom he desperately searched for in the future held no care for the past.

Yet he could never lie to himself and think you didn’t love him still, even after all this time. And Eren couldn’t deny anything about his own feelings for you, it’s what kept him going.
