How do Aenar fare when going to Starfleet Academy? Any challenges?

Headcanons: I’d say since it’s the 2240s-ish when Hemmer goes to the Academy and (at least in the timeline I have) he’s the only one! This leads to…a lot of problems, unfortunately. Thankfully, he has good roommates and a few good friends!  Let’s go over the pros and cons! (For Hemmer at least)

Oof! 0-0 This one is long- more beneath the cut!

Pros: 

Friends: I headcanon that one of his first friends is from the Kanyakumari district (In India) as they both move to take off their shoes when they first go to class (as it’s a normal thing to do in their schools) and they both are like ‘hey!! you!! You’re like me!!’ And they bond over the shit cafeteria food (I have a scene (I stg the fic is coming…eventually.) where they take apart a small lunchroom jukebox to make a hotplate and cook their own shit- they hate cafeteria food so much lmao) They bond more over food, engineering, and culture shock! 

Space: he loves fixing stuff! And the stars! he’s happy to both explore his interests…while also serving his people by being an impromptu Anear ambassador for everyone. (More of the first reason than the second…but the second reason is important too)TBH him being in Starfleet and following his purpose/his path makes him more happy than anything. The cons do suck, but the pros far outweigh them! 

Cons: 

General: Aenar are communal. Living in San Fran (which is HUGE) and having money?? Hemmer has no idea wtf money is because Aenar don’t use money. Also, a lot of people who are strangers freak him out- who tf is he supposed to call when he needs help?? or food?? or a break from his crazy roommates and horror movies?? 

The classes: Aenar need help to see certain things. Color doesn’t exist to them. They can’t see screens! ( to some extent, at least for my headcanons) So, their psychic abilities are just as much a disability as they are an extra ability! So, in classes, he’d probably have a ton of accomodations! some professors are cool…others are not. (As it is in college, oof) 

Communication: Aenar are very indirect (Mostly) so he appears as cold and uncaring when he is very much the opposite! This also stems from his general personality and the isolation he gets from being away from home. The Andorians don’t really see him as Andorian. This leads to some loneliness in the first bit-  that doesn’t last twelve hours tho. (He makes a friend (Girish- the guy from India) almost instantly haha)

For later students, it’s probably better…unless you bring up how Hemmer died. I feel like his death certainly left a bad aftertaste and a horrible precedent for any Aenar kid who wants to be in Starfleet. Oof.

All the people I ship romantically with this character: McCoy (wow you don't say?), Scotty, Pike, snw!t'pring but in a I really love watching this fall apart kind of way

My unpopular opinion about this character: uhhhh I probably have some but honestly I'm so detached from fandom I don't even know what they would be lol

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: More interactions with Spock and hemmer, especially with their telepathy!!! Uhura and Spock playing together for the first time in snw! Spock and M'Benga being pals! Spock and Una and Pike all hanging out frequently! Sam Kirk never shutting tf up about his brother to the point that Spock is annoyed by Jim Kirk before he even knows who he is!!! Sam making bad dad jokes to spock on a daily basis!! (I haven't seen snw s2 I hope some of these have happened lol)

My personal episode ranking based on my enjoyment: 3 - 4 - 2 - 1 - 5

I really didn’t like this episode. It was my least favourite of all 15 episodes tbh. It just didn’t hit right for me...

- I wonder if Chapel is going to leave the show at the end of the season.

- and ughhhh they really did what I expected and that was have Spock hate Sam Kirk *sighs* I mean it was clear in the very first episode, but... a little bit more creativity, maybe? I hate Sam, therefore Jim is also terrible, oh, he’s actually not, BFFs *rolls eyes*

The episode did everything I expected, but I kinda hoped they would write it better, but instead Spock just went and slept with Chapel immediately after T’Pring told him she wanted to take a break for a while. (I guess good for Spock to have another sex that wasn’t under an influence?) And he lost all my respect. (I hoped that Spock would be honest with T’Pring and would tell her that he has feelings for another and wished to experiment, and so they would part for a while... but no....) [also Spock literally going to Chapel after Amanda told him how painful it is to be in love with a Vulcan when you’re a human is certainly a choice.]

T’Pring should never take Spock back. She deserves better.

Spock can just forever live in his self-made purgatory. 

“She is yours. After a time, you may find that having is not so pleasing a thing after all as wanting.” They made it Spock/Chapel relevant now.

so I guess when Spock decides that being with Chapel wasn’t the best idea he’s ever had, they part, Chapel leaves the Enterprise

after a while Spock meets Leila and falls in love again. But this time, he will hold himself back and will never act on his feelings, until his shields are broken because of the spores

Chapel, in the meantime, will use Korby to get over Spock only to get assigned to the Enterprise again after Korby disappears, and will have to work alongside Spock for several years. And they will both be awkward around each other, but still occasionally “forced” to get close. Spock’s “katra” being put into Chapel, forced to kiss... (Requiem for Methuselah might now get another layer, too, but I still don’t want to rewatch it lol)

There were still Spock/Chapel scenes in the trailers, so I guess they’ll be fine for a couple of episodes and then maybe in the finale they “break up” and Chapel leaves? Until Kirk gets the Enterprise? The thing is, I feel, that Chapel is relatively popular and I also feel like many people are invested in Spock/Chapel and would like to see it continue, but considering Hemmer left the show at the end of s1, they might get rid of another character this season as well. No one would expect the legacy character to leave, since she is supposed to be in TOS, but also we know that she was on Kirk’s Enterprise to look for her fiancé, so... (maybe this is the reason why they’re still in 2259 even in the second season...)

All the interviews, articles, previews for SNW before it came out, sold this show as a Pike, Number One, and Spock show. But when it came to it, there was barely any Una. She was actively written out of a number of episodes (Memento Mori, All Those Who Wander, A Quality of Mercy - are the main culprits), and she wasn't vital to a lot of the others.

She's the first officer. No other Star Trek show in history has had this little screen time from the main cast first officer. Spock, Riker, Chakotay, Kira, T'Pol, Saru/Burnham, even god damn Ransom when the bridge characters aren't even the main ones we follow in Lower Decks (also it's funny because Ransom is voiced by Rebecca Romijn's husband), all have more screen time and more importance than the very first ever Star Trek first officer, Number One.

And it's not about my favourite not having screen time - Effie Trinket is one of my all time favourite characters and she's barely in the last THG book and I didn't get mad over it - it's that this was billed as a show where she would have screen time, and she just...didn't.

If you took her out of Season 1, nothing would change, she hasn't been the driving force of any plot except for her centric - which tbh is less about her (she's been Illyrian her whole life, and we didn't even really see her struggle with hiding it or whether or not she should risk exposing herself to save the crew) and more about a plot point (yes in episode 1, Pike was sent to rescue her, but he could easily have been sent just to rescue the other crew sans Una).

Meanwhile, if you take Chris (most episodes), La'an (Strange New Worlds, all the gorn stuff), Spock (do I even have to explain this one), Christine (Spock Amok/Serene Squall), Erica (Elysian Kingdom/A Quality of Mercy), Hemmer (most of his episodes), or Nyota (Children of the Comet/all her Hemmer friendship stuff) out of episodes, there would be vast differences to the plot and feel of the show.

I think Joseph M'Benga is possibly the only other main cast member who (aside from his centric episode) hasn't been vital to the show.

Una's mistreatment by the show hurts me a lot. She's been in my top 5 favourite Star Trek characters ever since I saw The Cage (and Discovery and Short Treks didn't change that) and I was so excited to see her and Pike work together as Captain and First Officer. AND WE'VE NOT REALLY SEEN THAT?? I think the only time we've actually seen them work together as CO/XO is the Serene Squall mutiny.

I'm really hoping Una has a bigger part in Season 2 (part of me does wonder if it's a scheduling conflict with Rebecca Romijn as she is the most famous cast member, which hopefully changed as filming went on.) because this is ridiculous. I know there’s the argument that they wanted to put more emphasis on the new characters, but Chris and Spock still got hella development, and they were already far more developed that Number One...

Though I can't imagine her arrest will last over one episode (or otherwise we're gonna get entire episodes without her in).

oh also last comment for now is that the episodic is fun and well done but tbh i don’t mind serialized at all either so. two cakes!! i do think the last ep did a GREAT job of showing that there WILL be growth for these characters, like i enjoy that it is aware that it’s a prequel!!

Do you recommend SNW? I’ve been trying to get into it because I like Gia Sandhu and enjoyed some episodes like The Elysian Kingdom. But I’m finding it hard to like what they did with Spock. I like Chapel as a character but Sp@pel isn’t my thing even though Gene Roddenberry wanted it to be canon. (Roddenberry apparently wanted Spock to be a Byronic character who circled between Uhura and Chapel before finally settling on the latter.)

Ok, I’m sorry, but first… people call it SPAPEL? This is the first time I’m seeing it lol took me a moment, anyway…

I’m probably not the best person to ask because I’m not watching Star Trek for… Star Trek? My favourite Star Trek is Discovery which is apparently not Star Trek at all to most people, so…

I think that overall SNW is a good series, but the focus on romance is, quite frankly, disappointing. (You can call me a hypocrite if you want, since I’m all into Kirk/La'an, but I still maintain that Kirk should not be in this show at all at this point - or only as an AU version of himself, since that’s fun - but since he is in it, well, I’m going to enjoy him - since I do like Wesley’s portrayal - and ship him with La'an.)

What is also disappointing is the focus on Spock. Again, I’m not going to pretend that I didn’t enjoy Spock’s journey in the first season, but I would prefer it if romance wasn’t the focus, and Spock was featured way less and other characters more. I have enjoyed Spock a bit less in s2, but I… enjoy Spock overall less even when I watch TOS; he’s just not my primary focus atm

I like La'an, I like M'Benga, I like Una, Uhura, Hemmer, Kirk, I enjoy Pelia, I like Pike when he doesn’t cook, so there is plenty to focus on for me (watching TV is about characters for me).

There are things I’m disappointed with (that are mainly: where are my strange new worlds? LOL), but I try not to dwell on them (except complaining every week about how Una was underutilized again lol), because they don’t really hold me back from enjoying what the writers are offering.

I don’t mind Spock/Chapel. I quite like them tbh; I’m interested in where it’ll go or rather how it gets there. (At this point, I’m most interested in “Is Chapel going to leave the Enterprise and the show at the end of the season?” because I feel that’s where it’s heading atm I don’t want it to happen, but I started to wonder because of Korby…)

I’m just very easy to please tbh and that’s why I don’t recommend things to people (I’m the kind of a person who will tell you that Star Trek V: The Final Frontier is the best TOS movie lol and it is my favourite~) I’m just lucky, so far, that SNW is matching my expectations and even validates some of my TOS readings and various headcanon. Doesn’t mean I wouldn’t want some things to be different, but I’m not the one writing the show.

I do like SNW, even though my reaction to episode 5 last week might suggest otherwise lol The comedy aspect just didn’t work for me… I’ll probably change my opinion after I rewatch it in a few months though.

also, I didn’t like The Elysian Kingdom when it aired, even though I cried at the end. I liked it more when I rewatched it in preparation for s2, but it still isn’t anywhere near my fave episodes. (I checked my rewatch ranking - based strictly on my enjoyment, not how good the episode is - and I put the episode as second to last, so… we might actually have different taste, so my opinion might be completely irrelevant to you…)

Strange New Worlds #9

of course that out of all characters to be antagonistic to Spock they would choose Sam Kirk. of course they would *rolls eyes*

The thing about snw is that it’s moving too fast (I guess that’s the problem of modern times media in general??? they’re not able to truly do an episodic show anymore???). They resolved M’Benga and Rukiya’s story way too soon imho. They didn’t truly allow us to know Hemmer... (I mean it’s sci-fi so anything can happen but...)

it’s an enjoyable show, all episodes are good, it can get emotional, funny, but it lacks long lasting emotions to the characters, at least for me. They focus too much on Spock tbh (and while I don’t dislike the romantic aspect of his arc, to be honest it was the best character arc of the season for me*, sometimes I’m like is that really what was the best choice for Spock? Romance?) I think their emphasis on ‘we’re gonna do an episodic show’ made me have different expectations, but at the end of the day snw isn’t truly different from Disco 2 or 3 seasons format, what it lacks is that one character connecting it all (even though in season 2 Pike also served as a glue). I’m a bit uhm about “it makes you human” line from Chapel because I specifically do not enjoy others calling Spock “human” (occasionally saying that Spock has “human” qualities (even though it’s still ugh because why should humans be the best? love, compassion, emotions, they all exist with all other species as well, but I can excuse it in TOS) is fine when it’s used as juxtaposition to something, but stuff like “you’re becoming more human” “it was the most human” “it makes you human” is just ugh) - especially in an episode that showed how much Spock struggles internally and how those emotions are actually Vulcan - or in this case, just Spock’s

(I guess if it pushes Spock to more suppression and dislike of “what others sees as human emotions” I guess I can work with that...)

I’m also disappointed that Una isn’t really a character in this show. That she is underutilized. Maybe next episode? (I also don’t understand why they keep Una and Spock apart. Una probably shared scenes with all characters but Spock)

(if they’re gonna bring in Scotty instead of Hemmer - which, I mean is just my own ‘what are they gonna do now?’ - I’m hoping that they will actually bring in McCoy as well, with Kirk. Because their talk about “what did Kirk do in this time period?” - we actually knew that from bits and pieces in TOS, what we never knew was what McCoy did in this time period. So put him on the same ship with Kirk. It’s not like there aren’t novels like that anyway. It’s not like it doesn’t actually have some basis in TOS...)

Anyway, I really like this episode and I’m really sad about Hemmer... I really wish we could have more time with him.

I remember them explicitly saying that this season should have a two-parter, does it mean it’s gonna end with a cliffhanger??? In any case, I’m afraid that after the next week, I’m just gonna forget snw exists until season 2 airs next year...
