ok genuine question here. as someone who has a special interest on jekyll and hyde (the book) and its social impact as a piece of media: where the hell did the tumblr fandom trend of infantilizing hyde come from.

i know the trend of depicting hyde as the evil alter trope comes from a combination of factors in the pop culture derive of jekyll and hyde adaptations and their social impact

for instance, DID/OSDD being first described and presented to the public (at least in the way we do know them now, since earlier descriptions were less specific) the same month strange case came out, kickstarting a Victorian fascination with dissociative disorders and what their existence means to the paradigm of the christian soul, how those discoveries would shape proto-psychiatry (which strange case was touching upon), a chronic impossibility to accept a fictional character could be as complex and contradictory as jekyll, the hard pill to swallow that the book's themes and morals are, the story being simplified for adaptations, and Stevenson being contacted by the brother of dr Myers (the man who first described DID and OSDD as we know them today, albeit using terminology that is considered outdated and offensive nowadays).

like all that added itself to the unreliably narrated plot twist to build up, year after year, adaptation after adaptation, a pop culture derive that culminates with 21st century readers assuming strange case depicts the evil alter trope (to the point of systems and their allies being wary of the book!) and modern retellings thinking using the evil alter trope is more accurate, realistic, or edgy, than the classic and more correct -and much less problematic- concept of jekyll literally playing a part and it spiraling into him losing sight of who he really is. ok? ok

but like

while a lot of adaptations have toyed with this concept, and some (fortunately, a minority) have gone full steam with it, i can't think of any adaptations that depict hyde as a "child", be it literally or metaphorically, with the exception of (siiighs) The Glass Scientists (in which Hyde being infantilized by other adults is treated as a joke, everybody laugh now)

but i get the feeling that this wasn't as much as an adaptation starting a trend but as an adaptation cementing it; i've seen my fair share of posts calling hyde "a baby man" or "a baby" or whatever with various degrees of irony (which is weird but funny at first, fucking gross once you become aware of the implications). and i think a fair share of them predate the "official" tgs run (2015 onwards). in fact i would say that fandom trend is what made tgs hyde be as infantilized as he is currently, because he certainly wasnt infantilized in the concept art stage of the comic, in which he was consistently depicted as a dangerous, violent person (if rather childish, silly, and immature; but those traits a child dont make, and i will say, they are also shared by book!hyde, who isnt infantilized at all beyond ironic comparisons to a child wearing adult clothes, and i remind you that those comparisons are played for horror rather than humor)

so like. when did it start, and why? is it because tumblr users can't be fucking normal about a short adult, is it because tumblr users are by nature contrarian and begun to infantilize him as a "response" to hyde being depicted as a sexual predator in most adaptations, or did something else happen?

you have no idea how just aggressively mad i am about the fact that the venn diagram of my last months, even my last WEEKS with my dad and the time i spent dissassociating when i was around him because btd had taken over my life is a fucking CIRCLE. it's a circle and it means that instead of moving on from those times like i have been trying SO. SO FUCKING HARD to do. it means i get to look back at them with a weird mix of fondness AND bitterness! fond bc we had SOME fun in amongst the neverending nightmare of being overworked and bitterness because it was completely MY fault that i was so deeply depressed over nothing and it managed to take so much from me in the end. like even down to the week he died my ass was sitting with my head against the window rotating the thought of dying in some guy's disgusting basement in my mind. i didnt set out with the intention to cause myself catastrophic damage and i heeded the warnings but STILL . i hope everyone who worked on it rots btw at this point im finished trying to be fair to the people who released that utter monstrosity into the world because it is A MONSTROSITY it is objectively bad at everything it depicts and if youre turned on by any of it im going to need you to go outside and either touch the grass or lick an electric fence. bc the target audience ISN'T JUST fetishists is it. every single other btd 'fan' i ever interacted with was so deep in it that they clearly WEREN'T coping even though thats what they'd tell you if you asked! it's the exact same fucking shit as lovesickness blogs you're just finding a way to validate being worse instead of trying to behave neutrally towards your illness and like OF COURSE it's not my place to comment but i watched these adult freaks blame children (who, in all fairness, shouldn't have been in the space to begin with) for being groomed in the fandom. i watched somebody get in a fight over stren being plain wrong by being like 'rape is hot tho' LIKE. SEEK HELP. you cant be like ohhhh take care of yourself 🥺🥺🥺 no use for self harm 🥺🥺🥺🥺 when your game is literally JUST SELF HARM. playing it is self harm!

AND ALSO theres this weird fucking culture of total silence around all of the allegations against ep and i WONDER WHY THAT IS ??????? because it means the 'its just fiction🥺🥺🥺' THING FALLS OUT OF ITS ASS. bc when abuse content is written by an abuser its no longer just fiction and THAT'S WHY EVERYONE IS SO RELUCTANT TO TELL YOU IT. everyone is so reluctant to mention the fact that ep is is a scumbag mental illnness faking groomer motherfucker so they can continue to believe that its Just Fiction when hmmm i dont think that's true anymore the moment electricpenis turned out to be just the worst fucking person when i asked somebody they responded to me by saying 'everybunny knows thats old news' LIKE DO THEY??? I remember u mentioning that the writers shy away from making Noodle unlikeable and a part of me thinks that its due to her being a kid when she was introduced and ending up as the writer and fandoms baby girl as a result? We dont really like to think of sweet precocious kids growing to be obnoxious and I get that but I think because of it the flaws she does have arent as apparent or called out. I reread roto and Murdoc seems to be the only one telling her to quit the pretentiousness 1/2

Im glad he did though bc it annoyed me too (esp the "chemicals in the food chain" tantrum) but I think it would be more meaningful if he wasnt the only one that did it. Eg. Russ gently reminding her that she was coming across as arrogant. Roto also had bits of hypocrisy eg saying society has forgotten what really matters then getting enraged over a dead tamagotchi. I do hope the writers expand on these to round out her character but Idk if they will 2/2

I definitely the writers tiptoed around her during P1-P2 for understandable reasons - they’re writing a child character growing up around characters like Murdoc and 2D who they were trying to establish as irresponsible messes. So yeah, it’s going to be hard to depict her having any significant flaws or experiencing consequences as a result of those flaws when the only other characters she interacts with are adult men who probably shouldn’t be raising a child. Like, it’s not impossible, but it would require proficient and thoughtful writing beyond the level of what Gorillaz can really offer us.

I’ll be honest, I don’t remember a lot of Noodle’s parts in ROTO, so I’ll take your word for all of them. And I agree so hard re: Murdoc. he’s so often painted as “the worst parent” of the three of them, and like, idt that’s always the case. This is more a hc on my part, but I get the sense he was the only one who noticed and acknowledged that she, like him, also had to grow up faster than was fair (though in a different way), and accepted that strengths she cultivated as a result of that. Like, yeah, she can come across as pretentious, but she also put in the time and effort to know everything she knows! She composed an entire album! She fought an army of zombies! She knows all about various forms of combat! She was also processing memories that were only just resurfacing (I think?). So rather than just passively agreeing or writing it off as “kids being kids,” he disagrees with her and opens the floor to discussion because he recognizes she’s just as well-read and knowledgeable - if not more well-read and knowledgeable - as he is. And I’ve always considered this to be something she appreciates about him, even if she doesn’t say it out loud.

I hope to see current Noodle become more well-rounded too! But I’m not getting my hopes up.

Ok so this is A LOT of requests and in the future I would like to ask people to limit their requests to three celebs at a time, but I’ve never said that before so it wouldn’t be fair to the person who requested all these. So yes I can do these requests. The only one I won’t do is Sean Young from Ace Ventura because her character in Ace Ventura is really really transphobic (or, more specifically, how that character is written). And I can do that specific Christina Aguilera one. Also since this IS so many requests I’ll probably be sprinkling them in through instead of doing them all at once, & I already wrote an Elizabeth Gillies one coming out towards the end of May.

Jhene Aiko yes. Jenna Ortega MAYBE. Jenna Ortega only JUST turned 18 and that was during the COVID-19 pandemic so there aren’t going to be a lot of projects where she’s an adult to pull from. So if I can find something maybe otherwise you might just have to wait a bit. Sorry if that’s a bummer. :/

someone probably asked this already but would u feel like writting on your thoughts on dingalings opinions/statements about buddy? i never got to around to play the lisa games after the first one but im getting the context both from the stuff uve written on it and my gf who played the game and she seems like the best character in the game imo

well im glad u asked.... (does a gay little walk over to the keyboard)

ok so as was mentioned by the last lisa anon i got, buddy is austins least favorite character. i cant recall if he ever specified why exactly in public, but i have seen an interview that he did shortly after the painful came out, so i think i have a LITTLE more context for his thought process (and please remember this is all conjecture, i literally dont know this man LMAO)

so first, for some background: buddy was adopted by brad when he found her abandoned as a baby, but her birth father is dr. yado, the man who created olathe (with buzzo!). she bears a notably striking resemblance to lisa, especially as she gets older - in fact, i think thats part of why brad chose to keep her. for reference, heres lisa, and heres buddy. obviously these are sprites and not indicative of their exact appearance, but this should make it pretty obvious what i mean. note that, even though brad knows how unsafe it is for buddy to “look like a girl,” he still keeps her hair long like lisas was. buzzo noted the similarity between them in the joyful as well. brad also treats her in a similar (but NOT the exact same) manner that marty did to lisa, but i will get into that in another ask i got LMAO

now, as to why austin doesnt like her. so, this may be reading into things a little too much, but i know for a fact that brad is austins favorite character, AND that austin based brads character and experiences on that of his own father, whom he had a sort of mixed relationship with by his own admission (and i believe his dad was also named “bradley” skjfsds). i dont know any details about this at all, but to my understanding, austins dad also wrestled with addiction, and had a bit of a “rough” personality like brad. austin mentioned in that interview dealing with resentment toward his father for a long time, but that he eventually realized that his father was doing the best that he could in spite of his own upbringing, and even though it didnt excuse the shitty stuff hed done, it made austin somewhat more understanding of the difficult position he was in. so, if brad is austins dad.... well, its not that far of a leap to speculate who buddy likely represents. and it colors a lot of the way he depicts her actions.

the painful, for all its amazing content, sort of dropped the ball on showing why buddy hated brad so much. the only things we know about buddy and brads relationship in that game come from the intro or directly from buddy, and since she never goes into detail (which is fair in-context since brad clearly knows the intricacies of their relationship LMAO), it makes it seem like the worst thing brad has done is forced buddy to stay inside and occasionally passed out from substance abuse. however, as we learn in the joyful, that is not true at all. brad insulted buddy (called her an idiot for asking about brads estranged son), forced her to kill at least two innocent men because, and i quote, “my daughter will not be weak,” and tried to isolate her from the only other people in her life (her uncles, rick, sticky, and cheeks) after they DARED to tell her a small tidbit about brads past. brad may not have been anywhere near as abusive as marty, but if i described all of these things together and asked a random person if they considered them abusive behaviors for a parent, i think id be likely to get an affirmative response.

now, this is not to say that austin doesnt make it a point to show brad mistreating buddy in the painful proper - in the marty scene, brad literally punts buddy across a room because she begs him not to kill him, and then when she throws herself between marty and brad to get him to stop, brad doesnt hesitate to beat the fuck out of her until she has to withdraw. remember too that buddy is not an adult, by any stretch of the imagination - austin confirmed on twitter that she is nowhere near 18. i personally put her age in the 10-12 range, but ive seen people go as high as 14 or 15. in either case, though, this is a fucking CHILD, and beating her like he did is no different than what marty used to do to both him and lisa.

even in spite of this stuff, though, fans are so much more willing to forgive brads behavior than buddys. there are a few reasons for this, but in a more meta-sense, theres a pretty clear reason why buddy is less sympathetic - because we spend WAY less time with her. in the painful, buddy is not on screen until maybe 5-10 hours into gameplay, and we dont even get any real time with her until the games second half. the joyful, in addition to that, is an EXTREMELY short game; the painful is about 20-30 hours, but the joyful runs about 5 hours max. it was a kickstarter stretch goal, and i honestly wish austin hadnt made it a stretch goal and had spent more time working on it, because while it does some really interesting stuff story-wise, it is severely lacking the run time to make buddys story as compelling as brads.

primarily, though, i believe its because brad gets freudian excuses that at least EXPLAIN his behavior and also show just how many demons he has been fighting. while buddy has just as good of a reason to be the way she is, we never really get to SEE this stuff point blank like we did with brad. we witness him being hurt and mistreated as a kid, and more still as an adult in flashbacks. we get almost nothing from buddy, even though it is obvious that she is suffering in a very unique way.

so, circling back to your question - why is buddy austins least favorite? i think, quite simply, he seems to identify with her character in the context of buddys relationship with brad, and that actually makes him like her LESS because he has the benefit of hindsight and experience-based wisdom to empathize much more with the brads character and experiences than buddys. so even though brad and buddy are the same in many ways, where he can see brads actions as understandable (if a bit extreme), he cant see buddys in quite the same way. it would be fine if he just felt that way privately, but unfortunately it leaks into the games themselves and leads to many fans not being able to see her perspective and empathize with her, either. and it really does suck bc buddy is definitely one of the most interesting video game protags ive ever seen LMAO
