Chapter 18 – The Wedding

It was night, the sun had gone to bed and the sky was blanketed with stars. As was the custom in this village he was preparing to ride to claim his bride. Geralt stood dressed in his formal dress blacks, the only Jewellery the medallion hanging around his neck. His thick hair the whitest it had ever been after Jaskier insisted that it be washed with some special soap. He smelt of Chamomile and Honey. Funny, Julia had never commented on his smell except for when he had been around the horses too much. But tonight, he would have bathed in the petals of roses if he thought Julia would like it, and Jaskier did understand the female gender better than he did. The last thing he held was his bouquet of flowers to present to Julia. As Visenna and Yen had walked home with him he had remembered Tobias the day he went to get his bride, and how important it had been that he got it right. Well, this small bunch of wildflowers they had picked on the way back to the inn was not expensive or exotic but they represented him.

His Brothers, Father, Mother, Daughter, and closest friends behind him on their horses moved through town to the road leading to the estate. He was not sure what to expect as he had been waiting at the estate when Tobias and Renee were given to each other. All he was instructed to do was to ride to the house and kneel before Tobias asking for his blessing as the man of the house. As they reached the road leading to the estate, he saw an eery glow, as he got closer, he saw Villagers lining each side. The whole village must have turned out because It looked like the road to the estate was completely lined with Lanterns.

As he slowly pasted each lantern the villagers smiled at him and fell in behind the small band so that by the time, he got to the estate a large crowd was following. Geralt had never felt so accepted and loved. He dismounted at the entrance to the estate and the rest of his family followed suit. Jolna, Petra, and another servant took the horses as the progression walked the final distance to the house.

As he drew nearer, he stopped, the breath knocked from him at the sight of Julia holding her lamp the symbol of her love for him. She was breathtaking, her reddish-brown hair hung in curls around her shoulders and the top part was braided around her head to symbolize a crown. It was dotted with small white flowers and covered with a thin sheer vale. Her dress was made with the finest white silk edged with ivory and a bright royal purple sash accentuated her small waist. Around her neck was the finest lace wire that held the most beautiful mix of purple and ivory crystals. To Geralt she was perfect.

With moist eyes he made his final steps to the house, as instructed he went to Tobias who was standing with Renee. Kneeling before him, Geralt suddenly felt nervous, the whole village was watching, listening, and the words seemed to have gotten stuck in his throat. She came close to Julia and held out her hand taking Geralt's and Julia's hands she said in a voice that carried across the valley "My name is Visenna I am Geralt's mother." Julia gasped in shock and surprise at this regal woman standing before her. Geralt's free hand drew Julia close to his side as Visenna continued to speak "I know this is a surprise for you but if you are willing I would like to say a blessing over you" Both Geralt and Julia tears now flowing silently down her cheeks nodded their consent.

Visenna began to sing a lilting melody that floated around Julia and Geralt "May the road rise to meet you, may the wind be always at your back, may the sun shine warm upon your face, the rains fall soft upon the fields. May the light of friendship guide your paths together. May the laughter of children grace the halls of your home. May the joy of living for one another trip a smile from your lips, a twinkle from your eye and today may the spirit of love find a dwelling place in your hearts" Lifting her eyes to the couple before her, Visenna declared, "I pray that life will be sweet for you both but above all that you will live a long full life together." With that Julia pulled the woman into a hug holding her tight. At first, she felt the resistance and fear but the longer she was in Julia's arms the more she relaxed and returned the hug.

Standing back from Visenna Julia looked to the rest of the family. Seeing Ciri she beckoned her to come forward and pulling her into her side 3then smiled at the rest. Julia spoke loudly enough that all the Village could hear "To you Vesemir, Eskel, Lambert and Coen, To you Visenna, Yennefer, Ciri, and Jaskier. This Home is now your home this Village is now your Village and whether you stay a day, month, or a lifetime we will always call you family." The Village once again gave a cheer, Tobias who stood closest to the door now turned and said with his loudest voice "Welcome Family it's now time to celebrate"

Geralt, Julia, and Ciri turned together and were ushered to the front of the line to enter the house. Excitement grew in Julia as they headed to the banquet hall, she had been itching to see what the girls had prepared for her and Geralt. Hannah, Ruth, and Nessie were waiting by the door to welcome them to the banquet. All three of them had bright smiles and unshed tears in their eyes. Pushing the doors open they let Geralt, Julia, and Ciri into the room.

Julia quickly put her hand to her mouth as a sob escaped, the room was almost like it had been all those years ago. But it was oh so much better. To say Julia was overwhelmed was an understatement. She felt Geralt's hand on her back as he slowly ushered her to the honoured seats of the bride and groom.

The room filled to overflowing and Julia found out later that they had set up chairs and tables in every spare room to accommodate the whole village. This was her family that Wilfred and Julia had cherished and now they were cherishing Geralt and his family. It warmed her heart and so did the warm body beside her. Julia blushed at Geralt's brashness but smiled a farewell to the room. As they left the banquet Geralt walked swiftly down the hall to their chambers while Julia snuggled deeper into his arms. This strong warrior was her husband they no longer needed to steal kisses and keep battling with temptation. Tonight, was theirs to enjoy.

Julia smiled as they entered their chambers, the girls had been busy. Her tongue licking a small trickle that had escaped her lips. She smiled a small shy smile at him and picking up the bundle turned and went into the bathroom. Ohh that woman, he didn't know if she knew what she was doing or if she just naturally made his body burn for her.

Blood - City Calm Down: I think "I'm the one who wants your blood" is just such a great an evocative refrain and I wish he said it one million times more in this song.

Television - City Calm Down: Absolutely love the idea of writing a song about how bloody TV is the bloody opiate of the masses that sounds like a Clash cover in 2019 and sounding so deliberately out of the zeitgeist and doing it so well and with such conviction that it’s absolutely great.

I Am The Resurrection - The Stone Roses: We went to Andrew McLelland's Finishing School and he played this as his last song in honour of Easter Sunday and described it as the greatest piece of acoustic dance music he's ever heard which is honestly not a bad description - it's an absolute jam.

Daisy - Pond: It's very cool that there's like an evil, mirror version of Tame Impala that exists in Pond. I think every band should have that.

Crying Lighting - Arctic Monkeys: Basically the reason this song is on this list is because I got stuck in a loop of saying "your pastimes, consisted of the strange and twisted and deranged and I hate that little game you had called "crying lightning" in a Werner Herzog voice to myself and I thought it was funny.

Keeping Time - Angie McMahon: Angie McMahon is so damn good at songs and I cannot believe it! She's only got like 5 and they're all incredible. She’s gonna be huge!

The House That Heaven Built - Japandroids: Sterogum had a really good writeup the other day about Post-Nothing turning 10 years old that turned into a wrap up of why Japandroids are such a good band and why Celebration Rock is a perfect album and it really crystallized a lot of my feelings about them. They're number one on my list of Bands That Make You Want To Start A Band for a good reason and this article really nails the whole young men figuring it all out feeling of Japandroids' music. I really think both Japandroids albums should be called Youth And Young Manhood but Kings Of Leon already took that name. I remember when my friend first turned me on to Post-Nothing he said he didn't want to tell anyone else except me because it was so good and it was Best Friends Music and I really believe that. It’s best friends music through and through. When I saw them a couple of years ago it was as part of a sort of impromptu road trip with my best friend and I think that was the best context I could have given it. Motor Runnin - Pist Idiots: The pub rock revival just keeps getting better and better. At the minute it's basically just Bad//Dreems, West Thebarton and these guys but I'm sure there's a million other bands bubbling under that are just about to break as well. I love this song, it's just straight up old fashioned pissed off rock and roll that somehow doesn't feel old fashioned at all.

Chains - As Cities Burn: As Cities Burn have reunited and have a new album coming out and I'm extremely wary of it because they're potentially ruining their previously discussed perfect streak. This is the first single and it's.. good I guess. It's kind of just normal and sort of outdated, a little bit of a step backward into safety for a band that was always changing and moving forward. I think I have a worm living in my brain though because I keep listening to it just because I really love the drum sound. They're very nicely mixed. Some very nice sounding drums.

Whacko Jacko Steals The Elephant Man's Bones - The Fall Of Troy: I was talking with some friends about young musicians because of Billie Eilish, and so we were talking about how Alanis Morrisette won a grammy when she was 21 and Taylor Swift won a grammy when she was 20 and Lorde made Royals when she was 17 and all that but what people don't realise is Thomas Erak wrote Doppelganger when he was 20 and it was his second album. He's 34 now and his music sucks badly. That's insane. What will happen to me when I'm 34? Chilling to think about.

A New Uniform / Patagonia - Tera Melos: I think Patagonian Rats is still my favourite Tera Melos album. Toss up between that and Untitled actually. But I love this one for how cohesive it feels. For a band whose whole ethos is chaos it's amazing how well it all comes together as a complete work tied up with a bow by the Skin Surf reprise near the end. I love this song because it's two sketches of songs tied together into one little chaotic lump and the big Primary! Secondary! finale is just so satisfying.

Talking Heads - Black Midi: Black Midi finally have actually proper recorded songs on spotify! The way Black Midi is getting talked about at the moment really feels like the days of blog buzz are back, it's crazy. If you haven't seen it yet here's the KEXP session that's rightfully getting them so much attention https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TMn1UuEIVvA I've watched it so many times and it's really something. The best part is the comments are full of music dudes just naming every band ever. "this sounds like if slint, polvo and hella did crack and had a gangbang" yuck "imagine them opening for Swans and/or Daughters" yuck "they're like if Minute Men and Frank Zappa had a baby and that baby dated the child of Talking Heads and Can but then got dumped for their best friend who was adopted and raised by their single parent Voivod but they were cool and stayed friends and listened to Tortoise and Thelonious Monk and got stoned and started a band and conquered the world." yuck "Slint meets Sonic youth meets Pere Ubu meets drive like jehu meets Beefheart...these guys took all that is deranged and twisted in rock and made one big soup of it!" yuck. Anyway the point is they rock completely and here's my addition to the band names: the way he sings sounds like Sting lol.

Walking On The Moon - The Police: This song makes you dumb I think. It's like the dumbest song in the world and listening to it makes your brain mushier, which makes you dumb and stupid. It's very good.

Rubber Bullies - Tropical Fuck Storm: I saw Tropical Fuck Storm opening for Kurt Vile the other day and it was absolutely incredible. My first time seeing them properly, not counting the live soundtrack they did for No Country For Old Men which was was a whole different kind of amazing. It feels like Gaz has finally put together a band that can keep up with is ferocious energy and the result is scary - they basically tore the place apart which makes them a funny opener for Kurt Vile who was as chilled out, relaxed and fun as you'd expect. They played this song near the end of their set and somehow I hadn't really noticed it when I listened to the album but now I can't stop listening to it. It's so good. I love the increasing paranoia of the backing vocals, especially in the last verse as it builds and builds.

Taman Shud - The Drones: This might be the best Drones song. It's a list that's constantly being revised in my head but it's top 5 definitely. It's nice listening to Feeling Kinda Free now knowing what he was going to do with Tropical Fuck Storm because it's all here. Fighting against the constraints of his regular sound and regular songwriting and eventually finding the solution in forming a whole new band. I love this song for a million reasons but the escalation of the disregard is very good. “I don't care about Andrew Bolt or Ned Kelly or the southern cross or the union jack” and you're nodding and then he says ‘I don't really care if you're a pedophile’ and you're nodding but slower. I get what he means in terms of media hype and whatever but it's still a very funny line. Anyway "why'd I give a rats about your tribal tats? You came here on a boat you fucking cunt" is grade A.

Dawn Patrol - Megadeth: The best thing about Megadeth is the sort of half baked politics. Dave Mustaine is the best kind of moron, he engages with everything at a gut level but believes he's being very cerebral about it at the same time. This little intro song about a nuclear post-apocalypse is so good because it's a legitimate warning and a response to legitimate worries but it's also like.. wouldn't that be sick if we had to wear gas masks and carry assault rifles around because all the nukes exploded and everyone was dead. What if there was zombies.

Rust In Peace... Polaris - Megadeth: The story behind Holy Wars... The Punishment Due is so good. "Mustaine has said that at a show in Antrim, Northern Ireland, he discovered bootlegged Megadeth T-shirts were on sale. He was dissuaded from taking action to have them removed on the basis that they were part of fund raising activities for "The Cause", explained as something to bring equality to Catholics and Protestants in the region. Liking how "The Cause" sounded as was explained to him, Mustaine dedicated a performance of "Anarchy In The UK" to it, causing the audience to riot. The band were forced to travel in a bulletproof bus after the show" I just love him. I'd like to share a Dave Mustain quotes about this song also. "I was driving home from Lake Elsanon. I was tailgating somebody, racing down the freeway, and I saw this bumper sticker on their car and it said, you know, this tongue in cheek stuff like, ‘One nuclear bomb could ruin your whole day,’ and then I looked on the other side and it said, ‘May all your nuclear weapons rust in peace,’ and I’m going, ‘'Rust in Peace.’ Damn, that’s a good title.‘ And I’m thinking like, 'What do they mean, rust in peace?’ I could just see it now – all these warheads sitting there, stockpiled somewhere like seal beach, you know, all covered with rust and stuff with kids out there spray-painting the stuff, you know." Goes ahead and writes a kick ass song from the perspective of a nuclear warhead containing the line "rotten egg air of death wrestles your nostrils".

Planet B - King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard: King Gizz are Megadeth now and I love it! The cold war is global warming now and we desperately need new thrash metal about it to save us!

Primodial Wound - Inter Arma: If you can't tell by me including three of their songs on this playlist I'm still having an absolute time with Inter Arma. Something I really love about this band is their ability to sit in a vibe for so long and expand on it. They're not songs with narrative arcs and multiple contrasting sections, they're songs that just kind of dig deeper on themselves. This one starts deep and then by thinning out entirely at around 6 minutes in only gets darker.

Howling Lands - Inter Arma: This song made me dream of a Dark Souls game where Inter Arma does the soundtrack. It's a peabrained thought but it's one that really got me thinking. This is boss music of the highest order: a song seemingly about itself and the hellbound denizens cursed to perform it in the arena of hell.

Sulphur English - Inter Arma: It's extremely funny to listen to this song a bunch of times and be completely blown away by the total power and ethereal majesty of it and then look up the lyrics to find out that it's about Trump in that very good way of putting normal thoughts through a metal lyrics filter "The charlatan sets his eyes towards the throne / tongue adrip in revolting ecstasy" "Sever the corrupt tongue of the imperious fool / silence the gangrenous root of his abhorrent voice"

Peepin' Tom - Courtney Barnett: When I saw Kurt Vile he brought out Courtney Barnett to play Over Everything as an encore and it was so good to see just how much a hometown crowd loves her. Everyone lost their shit! We love our good friend Courtney! I think I've written about this before but Peeping Tom is one of my favourite Kurt Vile songs and I think Courtney's version is even better. Her voice is perfect for it and she really has to show off her range to do it which I love. The super deep 'peeping' to the high cascading 'tom' is a perfect musical moment to me.

Bucky had a lot of theories on life and death. Death, he had learned, offered a vast nothingness. He liked it better when he thought that there would be a resting place, no matter how good or bad. He tried not to linger on his thoughts of death for long. It always liked to pop up, always made a circle of thoughts occasionally

Life, on the other hand, offered more. He had options but rarely did life come with instructions-- personal or otherwise. Professionally, Bucky knew he would be lingering with The Avengers until the bittersweet end took him down for good. After Hydra’s manipulation, going back under cryo, coming back out of it, and then dying before reappearing left his head more than just spinning, it feels like it should’ve taken it clean off his shoulder.

It hadn’t though. Bucky was still standing. Fate was giving him another chance and he didn’t want to screw it up. Screwing up wasn’t a fear Bucky had with a lot of things. There was a confidence and swagger he had about his life. Bucky didn’t fear signing up for the military. He wasn’t worried about the battlefield. It was people that Bucky worried about, he didn’t want to screw up with people he loved.

Bucky wasn’t reckless about the relationships he had with people. And he couldn’t be reckless about this ring either. The salesperson drones on for a moment about the cut of the diamonds, carats and all. Bucky can almost hear her now, Jenna in his ear about it being big enough to block out the sun. So Bucky shakes his head. “It’s beautiful, but not quite I’m looking for.”

He wants to apologize for being so picky. He just knows it’s not right. None of the rings are. He could be going about this all the wrong way. He could’ve been trying too hard to find the right ring. Bucky wasn’t clued in on how to shop for engagement rings. The Google search hadn’t proved quite as useful as he hoped it would. With a sigh the salesperson stares out a the too bright white tiles.

“Never meant to be a bother,” Bucky states, catching onto the unspoken frustration.

“Not a bother. Each person is different. Each sale has its quirks.”

With a glance at his watch, Bucky winces. It’s much later than he anticipated. He can bet there are going to be a string of text messages. Gracefully exiting the store and thanking the salesperson for all their help, he walks out the doors of the jewelry store. And sure enough, his messages are littered. The latest one reads, I don’t know what’s got your attention but I do hope it includes food.

Bucky doesn’t like to lie. But he’s not sure being blatant about an engagement ring is going to help him with his surprise. Would you believe me if I said I ran into an old friend?

His phone buzzes. Ha! Can’t say I’d believe it because Sam’s been by the house looking for you. Unless you ran across some dinosaurs.

He knew it was coming. The moment his fingers hit send, Bucky knew the smart comment was incoming. It was only a matter of seconds. A tuft of laughter escapes him and he shakes his head. With his seatbelt strapped across his chest, he calls Jenna. She answers after three rings. “How are the triceratops?”

“They’re well and send their regards. So in order to make up for my utter idiocy, what do you want for lunch?”

She hums for a moment, mulling over the thought. “It’s far out, depending on where you are.”

Bucky knows the tactic, her attempt to figure out where he is. He won’t fall for it. He waits for her continue on with her food selection. Silence ensues between the two of them. Bucky holds the phone gently, resting his head into the headrest of his car. The parking lot faces a major road. He can see people stopped at the light, waiting. He’s a little trapped and has all the time in the world.

“God, I’m hungry and you’re good at this.” So Jenna rattles off her choice.

“Usual?” Bucky poses the question but knows the answer.

“Yeah, the usual.”

“Sorry again for being gone so long. Time’s really lost its meaning with me. After all these years,” he teases. Her laugh filters in over the speaker and it makes his chest warm. He adores the sound.

“I’m the only one that can make old people jokes about you,” she defends.

Bucky shrugs, a playful hiss falling over his lips. “Looks like I beat you to it that time, sweetheart.”

“It’s unfortunate. I’ll have to keep that one in mind for the future.”

“I want credit.” A couple more minutes of laughter later, Bucky pulls out onto the street. It’s going to be a ten minute drive out and while, normally this would inconvenience him, Bucky wonders if he can blame traffic for one more quick pitstop. There’s a pawnshop halfway up the stretch and he hasn’t had a chance to stop by it.

He ultimately decides against it. He can’t press his luck too much. He decides to be dutiful and just stick with lunch. There will be other days for him to venture out and hunt down this ring. He’s got some time.

Jenna grins when the keys turn in the lock of the apartment. Bucky saunters through, hair falling just slightly into his face. “Finally good to see your face.”

He disappeared in the morning after an early run and she hadn’t seen him half the day. She can tell something is off. Not a bad off, but he’s holding something back. She’s not sure what and he’s good at keeping secrets, putting parts of himself into smaller compartments and never to be touched again.

She can’t fault that though. She’s done much of the same in some regards. It’s not hard to want to swallow down pieces of their lives. After the snap, she fears shutting her eyes. Nights for the both of them include staying up too late, watching bad TV movies, while the screen flickers blue against their white apartment walls. Sleeping includes entangling themselves in the other and clutching to make sure they’re still real, that the world around them is still solid beneath their fingertips.

“That’s a thinking face if I’ve never seen one,” Bucky quips around his bite of turkey panini.

Jenna shakes her head. “Nothing, nothing.” Her hair falls like a brown curtain to hide her face.

Bucky hums, a bit disapproving and finds her chin to tilt her head up. “That’s not a nothing face. We’ve been together for how long? I know you.”

Jenna doesn’t want to admit it. She doesn’t want to bring down the moment. “Just worried.” It’s true. She is worried. It’s just not a full truth.

“There’s such a thing as lying by omission.”

“I’m not lying. I am worried.”

Bucky sets the sandwich done, wiping his fingers onto a napkin. “Worried about what?”

Jenna shrugs. “A lot of things. You got the time for it?”

Bucky watches her, the way her hazel eyes never quite meeting is. It’s a defense mechanism. Both of them know it.

“Nothing but time,” Bucky retorts, reclining into the chair. It creaks a little and he’s reminded that he was supposed to be getting something to support the bottom of the chair to help it stop creaking. He can’t lie that his memory has taken a small hit since the second thaw. He’s good about most things, having had to start writing down his tasks for the day so he better remembers.

“Yeah,” she mutters. Her voice is soft.

“Want me to be honest?” Bucky asks. It’ll ruin his plan.

“In a relationship, that’s kind of nice.”

“I was shopping around for you.”

Oh, that’s definitely not what she imagined. Part of her did have a moment’s panic that Bucky had either snapped, now a renegade and tearing the city apart, or was running around behind her back. Though shopping around for her seemed off too. “For what?” She risked a glance down at her old t-shirt, some paint splattered on it from them giving their dresser a facelift. She wasn’t one to be constantly shopping or in desires for new clothes.

Bucky pulls out his phone. Pressing in the passcode, he pulls up his search history. He then stands and goes to his backpack. He finds his journal and opens that up too. When he sets them down in front of her, Jenna’s not sure she can quite believe her eyes. The notebook has a scribble of directions and his search shows gold and silver rings.

“You’re buying me a ring?”

He has to restrain himself from the laughter pressing up his chest. “Yes, a ring.”

“A ring for what?”

“Aring for you,” he says. Maybe he can spare his plan just a little. “What did Sam want?”

Jenna still doesn’t let the confusion of his ring search completely escape her mind when she shrugs. “Really only asked if you were around and when I said no, he left.”

They finished lunch in relative silence. Jenna studies him, the strong nose, and beard covering his chin and jaw. Bucky seems so calm about it that she thinks it can’t be an engagement ring. Would he just drop a proposal? It’s not inherently a secret as they’ve discussed marriage. It was far away though. Marriage wasn’t immediate, but it felt right.

Maybe it would be a promise ring. Maybe this was Bucky’s way of saying someday soon. She liked that idea. That they both want to keep moving forward but aren’t tied down to any societal pressures or expectations. It was definitely freeing not to have to worry constantly. Bucky was always good on his promises.

A phone beeps, blaring through the silence of their apartment. Bucky, currently now bunkered down on the floor, cleaning his riffle waits for just a moment to know if the noise will go off again. He hadn’t shot since Tuesday, but the act of taking it apart, inspecting the pieces and putting it back together was cathartic. Jenna knew, watching him with q-tips at his side, that he only did this most often when thinking, when mulling something over. She looks back to his journal, ears perked too to listen for another beep. If it goes off twice with only a minute and no less and no more apart, they’re being summoned to the headquarters.

Shopping for a ring. No piece of jewelry should cause this much thought. It was metal and gems--as simple as that.

The beep signals again. An exact sixty seconds. Bucky assembles the riffle back together, with only a small grunt leaving his lips as he stands. “Alright there, old man?” Jenna asks.

He sighs, the smallest smile painting his face. “Too bad Steve’s not here. He’s the real old man now.”

It’s most likely routine, nothing more than a headcount check in for them. But as they slide riffle and bow onto their backs, they know not to spare any caution. A hazard to the job if one decides to let routine dampen their alertness. Bucky holds out a scrunchie to her. Jenna takes it wordlessly, the debate of who does a better ponytail always ending with the same results. Bucky purposeful sabatoges his attempts so she’s tasked with doing it.

She hasn’t forgotten the years prior, of watching him fixing his hair in battle. It’s a strange conundrum. Pressed down behind over, ears flooded with blood and the beat of one’s heartbeat and noticing the slip of a hair tie, demanding to be fixed. It’s a gamble for sure, to either let the hair band fall or risk the two seconds to tie it back again. Their fix now is to slip a couple hair pins in to keep the hair tie in place.

Bucky settles onto the little stool of their kitchen counter, his all black uniform a little snug but slowly giving into the warmth of him. There’s a brief moment, even though Jenna’s carding her fingers through his hair quickly to wrapped the brown tie around and they both know they are playing with time, that Bucky feels at peace. This is a normal that he wants to keep forever and even though he doesn’t have the perfect ring right now, he could just ask.

He could just ask. The thought hits him twice but it really only clicks after the second time. He should just ask. What if fate was opening another door for him? What if this was a moment--a make or break moment in life? There were a few of them. Deciding to enlist, deciding to trust himself again, deciding that he would heal on his own terms.

“Done,” Jenna says, grabbing the second hair tie Bucky brought and wrapping it around her own hair. Bucky can hear his own heart thumping in his chest, feel it beating in his ears too. “Do you want me to drive or you?”

He spins. Things feel slowed down. Like the blink of her eyes, he manages to catch it in action. She’s towering over him a little, thanks to his seated position and her tall stature. His fingers cup her jaw and he senses the confusion twitching up her face before it truly settles into her muscles.

“You alright?”

Alright, it’s a simple word. But there is something behind alright that Bucky settles on. He’s making it. “I know the proper way to do this is with a ring and on one knee. But you think you can spare an old man one of those things.”

“Buck, what’s going on?” This damned ring keeps coming back up and she doesn’t want to jump to conclusions, doesn’t want to think it’s real, but she can’t help but melt into his soft touch.

“Jenna, I’ve got just one question. I’m not a man of many words. But I need you to know that I do love you dearly. We work so well together and I mean that, like, there’s an understanding between us. And I know you’ll never quit on the jokes. But I look forward to the jabs. And I know if you’ve made your mind up, there’s no changing it. I don’t want to change it. I just want us. In every sense of the word. Will you marry me?”

There’s just an inhale. It’s a gasp from Jenna. At first, there’s disbelief. Bucky hasn’t just uttered those words. But he continues to watch her, a small glint of anticipation flashes through his eyes. Disbelief fades into shock and she can feel the sting behind her eyes. “You don’t mean that?”

“Sweetheart, I do. I really mean it. I know a ring would really help me right now. And I do apologize for not having one. I wanted too. And then, the moment just felt right. I know you’ll hang this over my head for the rest of my life and I can’t say I don’t deserve it.”

“I--” The words dry up in her throat. A tear falls and another one follows it. She’d be lying to herself if she didn’t want to marry him. Four years together, of navigating the world. It’s been four years of them of arguing over ripe plums, deciding which toilet paper was the best, fighting in arms together. She wouldn’t trade that for the world. She couldn’t trade it in even if she tried.

“Yes,” she whispers, the elated sob chokes her just a little but she nods.

Bucky grins, a full blown, teeth showing smile. “I swear I can hear but say that one more time for me.”

With a watery laugh, she tries to glower at him. “Yes, I’ll marry you.”

Their kiss is soft, short pecks and she buries her face into his shoulder. Her laughter bubbles from her. The shock fades and she is just left with elation. “I love you,” she whispers, still having not removed herself from his arms.

“I love you too.”

The soft moment lingers but they are reminded of the check in and they have to return themselves to the real world. Bucky takes the keys and Jenna slips her hand into his. The drive isn’t terribly long. They opted to keep fairly close by. They’re far enough away that they don’t feel tied down to anything, but they know that things work better if they do keep close.

Just a ring for you. The thought comes back. Jenna laughs, staring at Bucky. “There’s such a thing as lying by omission.”

Bucky knows that she’s caught on. “It is technically a ring for you!”

“Yeah, an engagement ring! That’s totally different. It’s a whole other significance.”

Bucky reaches over, taking her hand. His traces around her ring finger. “I’m gonna make it up to you. I promise.”

“Oh you will, alright. You’re gonna have a whole lifetime to make it up to me.”

At the headquarters, they can see the other cars, planes and jets littered about and it’s a nice feeling. It’s a sight that they try not to take for granted after losing it all so suddenly. Bucky brings her knuckles to his lips, pressing short kisses over each one.

It’s definitely a sight when Bucky catches Sam in his suit, the shield on his back. Things have definitely changed. “Bucky and Jenna,” Sam says, “where are they?”

“Here,” they return in unison.

Sam grins, when he turns to their voices. “Nice for you to join us.” The check in goes by faster, all of them are dismissed. Sam motions for Bucky to linger back.

“Take the keys,” Bucky tells Jenna kissing her forehead.

When Sam and Bucky get alone together, Sam breaks out his phone. “Think I found something.” The screen shows a love band, gold in color with a simple rhombus shaped diamond settled into the middle with tiny leaves settled around it also littered with smaller diamonds.

“It’s perfect. I’ll have to propose a second time though.”

Sam slaps his chest. “You did not.”

“He did!” Jenna calls out.

“I told you to go to the car!”

Ranking the zelda stages in Super Smash Bros Ultimate (because why not)

If you're like me and love zelda and love smash bros, well do I have news for you! OK so this list is pointless and might anger some, chances are my least favorite stage is your favorite and my favorite you might think sucks. Since this is ultimate music tracks won't really play a role here (although you won't find Midna's lament playing on spirit tracks for my smash game) the base stage and omega stage will be playing a role here. And even if a stage is ranked at the bottom does not mean I hate it. Ok, with that out of the way

9. Skyloft

With 2018 just two weeks away, I am, as I am with each new years, inclined to be quite excited for a fresh start. No matter what the current year shared with me, surprised or delighted me with, the gift of a chance to improve is a priceless opportunity that only arrives once every 365 days. And so, I readily choose to seize it and apply what I have learned over the past 12 months and put it to practice, to improve upon who I reveal myself to be the previous year. As I look ahead to the new year with plans to finally get back to France since far too long ago (2013), I couldn't help but look to my collection of French living and culture books which I didn't fully realized is as plentiful as it turned out to be in my personal library (a sampling captured recently of many of my French themed books) for inspiration as to how to step forward into 2018.
