would take performing arts as his major since he's super interested in voice acting!

you'd think he would take history as an easy way out seeing as he's lived for centuries now but bro i can tell you that he probably sucks at it :'

i can't imagine him taking anything else than performing arts. even then he wouldn't just focus on voice acting only. he'd perfectly take a role in acting too

dancing and singing maybe not too much-

but vox would enjoy them nonetheless since it's all about having fun

he's the popular student, whether he intended to be one on purpose or because he's just naturally charming. not all the guys rly like him since he's practically had all the girls drooling all over him

even the female (sometimes male) professors can't find themselves in the right position to teach him

not with that devilish smile, nope

he aces his practical exams and projects super well, not so much his written tests tho :o

students would sometimes ask advice on voice acting since he was doing that pretty well

no shortage of times where they asked only to get in contact with him, his number if they were lucky

doesn't really do tutoring sessions since he believes he still has a lot to learn himself, asking for advice sure, but teaching? nah

the film/animation students fight over him whenever they're assigned to make a movie production

vox might actually be interested in joining the student council and it's no surprise he's accepted since he's very charming, has relatively good grades and is flexible in group projects

on a more serious note, he loves meeting new people and making new connections so yeah!

besides the student council, would also join the drama club and most likely met shu there

again, for connections and to practice his skills

there have been one too many times where he was casted as the main characters throughout the years he was at college

what can i say? he captures an audience so well~

part time job is obviously barista.

i think vox low key has always wanted to become a barista

to him there's just something so attractive about being one?? or is this just a stigma that i have

whatever, being a barista is cool as hell

oh and he loves the idea of putting down whatever message he wanted on the customers' cup, he could be sweet or flirty

he likes it because he has the chance to make someone's day by simply writing a message to them <3

the job pays well, he can experiment with types of drinks and when there are leftover pastries from the day, vox gets to bring them home to eat

vox is a interpersonal (social), aural (audio) and a visual learner. as mentioned before, he won't be too good at taking written tests so linguistic is out of the question (doesn't mean he dislikes reading tho! i've heard him say that he reads books)

i also don't think he's the biggest fan of studying alone either so he'll always rope in a classmate or two so it's not so quiet

vox remembers much easier when there's something to look at, like pictures or something

audio learner because he wants to be a voice actor duh

he would have to get used to listening to other actors do their work to pick up on how they act in terms of their voice

how you and vox met was through a cinematography project you had

you were required to make a film production with a certain theme and of course as the rumors spread, you heard about everyone in your year fighting over vox as their cast

you too wished you could cast him but seeing as he was probably busy helping the others, you didn't really bother to ask

but vox was working at the cafe your team agreed to work in and he overheard your wonderful ideas for your project, so when he personally delivered your drinks, he also asked if you were open for casting since you came from the same college anyway

surprised to say the least but you couldn't refuse him, so he officially became part of your team too

so that was how you met your current unseiso of a boyfriend they call vox

he asked you out once the project was finished, saying that he didn't wish to stop meeting you

cheesy but romantic all the same

the perks of having a boyfriend who was in the performing arts major rly helped you out as a film student. you got to meet a lot of talented actors and you could ask for vox's help

as long as you paid in kisses and cuddles

at the end of the four year study, vox was obviously asked to make a speech. when he stepped on that stage, he did not forget to mention you:

"and to my lovely y/n, who's given me a path to so many opportunities to help with my development as an actor. thank you, darling."

because he thinks it's super cool he could track down criminals with rly cool techniques

but then he realized how fucking hard it is to be a criminology student and wished he could've picked something easier :"D

ofc college was not cheap so at least mysta tried his best to get through

asking for a ton of help from his classmates or straight up the professor

he sure as fuck did not take another four years of this shit

anyway

although mysta is not the best in the class (bottom ten), a lot of people like him for his humor and his rly eccentric attitude about things

his fashion sense became one his trademarks

a good break from the stress of college rly

but people rly do question why the heck he chose this major but eh

definitely the type to hog for homework answers

i actually think mysta would make a huge contribution tho despite his lack of skills in the department when it comes to group projects

what i mean here is that he's always hands down to help however he can, especially the more physical and tedious workload

like needing to print papers, looking for as much material needed for the project or setting up the contents into a powerpoint

i still think that counts as a lot of work <3

professors know him because he frequents them for tutoring sessions, so it's safe to say that mysta is super close with all his lecturers-

but that's not a bad thing at all!

in fact, without mysta rly realizing, this has become his benefit. with most of the teachers aware that he is struggling in his classes, they tend to grade him based on his efforts more than the results of a test

so even if he thinks he's falling behind, ask his professors and they will say the exact opposite!

for school activities, i would say mysta would like to join the sports club as long as his classes don't take up too much of his time

he wants to be able to stay active instead of sitting down and studying all day, plus he gets to meet a lot people and actually where he met the super popular kaneshiro kid!

part time jobs is also something mysta could commit himself to, especially if it meant helping out with student loans

anything works out for him so long as again, it didn't take too much of his time and don't tire him out

lot of times where he fell asleep in the library when he should be catching up with homework and reading tests o.0

speaking of studying, mysta is definitely a visual and kinesthetic learner mostly bcs he's not the type of guy to just sit still and read that fucking textbook

far from being a verbal learner. def not the type to like reading for long periods of time

he claims to be an interpersonal (social) learner, but with a lot of people around him, it's more likely he won't get anything done

this is where you come in

you and him were paired up, and it just so happens that you were one of the students who was doing pretty well in criminology

anyone would've been happy to be paired up with you but mysta is a bit different than just anyone

he was actually intimidated by just how well you were doing and he kept telling himself that he was being such a burden to you

but you never fail to patiently get mysta to work on the ones that need more thinking, even if you have to guide him

for once, mysta knew what the assignment was about this time, due to your composure during work

after that, he may or may not have braved himself to be in one group with you a lot more

it's just that people tend to just give up on him but there you were, staying up late with him just so he could get some material down for an upcoming test

when you fell asleep, mysta let the words of falling for you slip

"really?"

"HUH? YOU WERE AWAKE--"

"i like you too, dummy. now get back to studying. we'll go on a date after the test."

final project weeks were the same. lots of staying up late together (mostly bcs of mysta) and checking each other's work.

when the results were almost out, you actually had to stay over at mysta's bcs of how fucking nervous he was. was he going to graduate? did he have to start another year over?

as you held his hand tightly, mysta opens his results and sees his passing grade, officially now graduated from college

he sobbed against you that night, thanking you over and over again for always there to help him and being so patient

he took me a while to figure out what major best fit him (disclaimer: i swear i've heard him mention what major he took but my tiny brain forgot what it was and from what stream ;-;)

sooo i think it's most likely business since he is in the mafia

the skills could be super useful if he's going to need some extra funds for his syndicate

he'll take only a bachelor's degree because he wants to focus on his mafia work as soon as college finishes

luca is most obviously the jock of the school and one of the more popular students because of his extroverted nature

tbh tho his grades aren't too great??? let's say average :D

he's more like the guy who's looking for the fun of college instead of actually getting the education-

because of this, a lot of people like to hang around him. sometimes students who have super good grades can be a bit unapproachable, ofc not because of the students themselves, but others tend to not feel relatable to someone who does very well in academics

so luca is extremely approachable, easy going and friendly

not the smartest but its the quality of the company that counts right?

professors know who he is because of his popularity and although most of them are okay with luca, some do appreciate him bringing the mood up when classes are tense

the younger lecturers are most likely best friends with him lmao

as aforementioned, man is a jock and is just naturally energetic

OF COURSE HE WOULD JOIN THE SPORTS CLUB

he religiously participates bcs he gets to see his buddies and would always join in on whatever challenges were set onto him. he's not afraid to lose

i also think he would be interested in joining the student council and he did make it! which brought him to meet with vox ^^

luca brings a ton of ideas for student activities and is always happy to help out with whatever he can. with his popularity, it's easy to rope students into whatever event they had going on too

because he has a mafia to run, he rly doesn't make time to do a part time job

definitely a physical (kinesthetic) and interpersonal learner. man can't just sit down to read something and he most certainly will go crazy if he's not loudly memorizing his flash cards without someone else there

so how does he meet you?

the student council asked him to go to the art club to find someone who could handle illustrations for an event they were holding, so luca pitched in and saw you busily working on something in the club room

you didn't really know anyone from the student council so you pretty much had to cling onto luca the entire time when you met up with the student council (esp when this guy from the performing arts department kept hitting on you. vox was it?)

in the end, when the event finished, luca got used to hanging out with you. then he confessed when he realized he was crushing on you :3

he asks you to come by to the sports club all the time so he could introduce you to his friends and when you're alone, you and him would sometimes work out together

you guys go out on a lot of study dates

...which turns to playing around and not really getting anything done :")

luca always teases you to draw him "like of your french girls" but he was caught by surprise when you actually do ask him to model nude for an assignment

he was more embarrassed than he thought he would be

but he liked knowing he could help you out!

he would sometimes cry when you give him a drawing you did of him just because you wanted to. he's framing them all in his room

as a graduation gift, you actually gave him a super elaborate artwork in a pretty big medium too. and well, it's safe to say luca shamelessly shed some tears at the ceremony, showing off your work to everyone there

as his gift to you, he took you on vacation to somewhere you've always wanted to go to.

to luca, you definitely made his time in college so much more fun

pretty obvious he took up literature

but let me tell ya, i think he will take literature for his first four years and after he got the degree for that, he's going to change his major to music because again pretty obvious reasons

he would take literature first so he has the writing skills needed later in music making

or, ike could take the option of a double degree since i see him as the type of person who rly likes to bury himself in work especially if it's the things he really is passionate about

but for the sake of his social needs and sanity, let's say our man ike did not take a double degree

ike eveland is obviously the star student of his class, perhaps even top 5 of his entire year

he's also pretty humble about his achievements so he's not the snobby kid who flaunts their good grades

everyone absolutely respects and admires him for it, even going out of their way to ask for tutoring sessions with him

paid tutoring sessions, mind you

he'll take some, but not so much his schedules are full much to the student body's dismay

his professors love him so much as well, using his work as examples no matter how many times ike insists there's no need to do that

is ike the type to join the student council?

there was a time where he did consider the choice, seeing how he has potential and all the people around him supported him to join

but i think he wouldn't take up on the opportunity, mostly worried he won't be able to have any time for himself

even outside college hours, he'll do personal projects and all that

so yeah, no to the student council and tutoring sessions if ike wasn't looking for the extra money

the professors know who shu is and definitely appreciate him for helping out the students whenever possible, although his grades aren't always top of the class, his character and attitude makes up for it

shu would definitely like to join clubs outside his academics, say like the performing arts club

look i know but i can't stop thinking about shu joining the theatre club, just hanging out with a whole bunch of different kids. he likes making friends! plus he likes working backstage more

plays need a reliable technician like him after all

or if not performing arts, most likely an anime club if it was available lmao

unlike ike, he's not one to rly delve into his college life all the way back home. so once he's out of class, he's focusing on his non academic skills

besides clubs, there's a big chance shu works part time, preferably jobs that let him work at night since he has a rly bad sleep schedule.

the atmosphere is quiet too so he can take advantage and use it to study if it wasn't busy

a 24 hour store of some kind should be alright for shu, it doesn't have to be related to his major either

he's more of a interpersonal and visual learner i think

he likes studying with someone there with him like a study buddy since it makes it less boring. visual because he likes to doodle things so i have a feeling he illustrates something he finds hard to remember

also, of course studies only at night time if possible

because of his interpersonal type of learning, this was how you met him

you two were both looking for study buddies then through your friends, you guys met and agreed to study together

originally it was only for that one test you were super nervous of, but as you aced that one because of shu's help (his assignment flawless because he had you to it check over)

yeah you guys enjoyed each other's company and decided to go on more "study sessions" together

i think the way shu would confess to you would be that trend where you would make a program and you just click a ton of buttons saying how much he likes you

and then at the end there's a message box that asks you:

with the choices being yes or yes 😭

you go to your next study session, now named study date!

for his final project, you were obligated to stay over at his place until he submitted it. he claims that his brain works more efficiently when you're there with him, plus he'll have a second pair of eyes that hasn't been glued to the same codes over and over again

when shu announced the results, he treated you to some sushi and an all you can eat barbeque for helping him graduate pretty much

with a full stomach, you and him are cuddling for the rest of the night until you felt like getting up

the way ariel still sings her head bc.. u cannot take her mermaid gifts away from her not truly and completely cause the sea is still part of her!!! even as a human, when she requires comfort, she goes to the sea as she can feel the connection still and her family.

she's an incredibly strong swimmer (She Has A Tail i know this but) and the upper body strength it would've taken to do the thing with turning the ship around in the middle of an underwater tornado thing in a storm with. NO LEGS???? this strength carries over even with legs.

ariel youngest daughter privilege and i know it 😔😔😔 by comparison to her sisters, she gets away with soo much more. he's strict with her but i imagine him destroying her grotto was the first time she's ever been disciplined to a large degree. she's only afraid of him and disappointing him once in a while from what her sisters have told her about his rage. and not only is she the youngest sibling, her mother was triton’s favorite wife and that also results in a lot of ariel favoritism. she has her mother’s voice and reminds her father a lot of her. she’s the daughter that yells back!!

ariel has a necklace to remind her of home, it has a pearl for each of her sisters, tinted to be their respective color, and a small golden conch shell in the middle to represent her father.

eric was ariel’s first romantic interest, and before him she was almost uninterested in romance? she found that she didn’t like that most of the people she knew only saw her for her father, and either pursued her because of it or didn’t because of it. while she loved romance in a daydreamy sort of way, she had never physically experienced it, even while she had developed crushes she’s never acted on. her crushes were normally idealized and romanticized versions of people, and she was quick to try and befriend them, only to realize that she wasn’t interested once she truly got to know them, and nothing ever went further than friendship.

ariel fell in love with eric when she saw him, but it was definitely more the idealized and frankly made up version of him in her head because she didn’t know him at all.

at this point, ariel does not rule over the carinae sea as she has broken all three rules. she is 20 at the time of the movie, while an arguably young 20, but she needs to prove her maturity to her father before he allows her her birthright.

when she does rule, ariel’s kingdom is filled with music and joy. while her father’s palace still resides in the carinae sea, the way she rules is completely different to him. “Princess Ariel is said to rule her kingdom with an endearing kindness, and is beloved by all. In stories, Princess Ariel is revered for her remarkable singing voice and curiosity. She believes in the power of togetherness and unity, and she has a gift for seeing the best in her people.” ariel also does her best to never forbid anything, especially when it comes to learning and exploring, even if/when her people seem to be caused more harm by it than help. she is looked down upon by her father and sisters because they find her to be completely naive. (and, she is in ways, but not to the degree they think) this frustrates ariel and often, while she doesn’t do it on purpose, causes her to listen to their advice even less.

triton’s constant overbearing and overprotective attitude over ariel did not help keep her in line as it did her sisters. she appears to be an outlier, as the rest of her sisters are more ‘tame’, and triton has an almost perception that he did something wrong with her, because she is so different to her sisters.

especially on land but generally as well, ariel has a constant need to touch and stimulate her senses, to a point of social inappropriateness at times.

if ariel’s singing, or even humming, you can hear it from incredible distances, even if she’s just speaking it projects in a way that can seem odd, never too loud when you’re close to her but she is almost always heard. recognizing this and her voice/existence in general is sure to get you a beaming smile, as she was used to having her every thought and want being disregarded by her family and royal staff at the palace.

ariel has an incredibly active imagination, and because of it can stay up for hours into the night, even laying down, thinking of scenarios and ideas and things to explore. she’s also an awesome storyteller.

ariel’s love language is learning <3 teach her anything and she’s immediately looking at with you with the most amazement and trust

ariel appreciates the sea a lot more once she spends time with eric on the surface and learns his fascination with it, as well as her no longer feeling as trapped in it

ariel is very much a darling to the merpeople in the carinae sea, and so a lot of people have suspicions about ariel’s grotto, as well as some have seen it themselves, unbeknownst to her, of course, and have kept it from the sea king.

ariel’s mother, who started her infatuation with humans as she had one herself before her passing, taught her how to read english from a very young age, which is why she’s able to read the books in her grotto.

when her father gives her the blessing of legs, ariel still has her other mermaid abilities, she is not human in any other sense but her legs. triton’s spell allows her to return to the water and her tail whenever she chooses.

honest girl honest girl honest girl ‘i can’t lie to you i won’t’ and she always expects this kind of honesty from others, she will never doubt you unless proven otherwise and even then it has to be strong evidence

ariel doesn’t eat any meat, it’s what her diet was like in the sea and it stays the same on land. it definitely has to do with her discomfort for the human culture for eating fish.

her draw to the boat in the lagoon is because she misses the water!!! even if she doesn’t realize it, she would never be able to remain on land, just for her own sanity, without ever being near water again.

ariel never wears heels again after she finds out that there are other options. she prefers the comfort of sandals or no shoes. if sandals, they are often shoes with little to no support because she doesn’t like how sturdy and firm they can get, it’s uncomfortable.

ariel is a little bit shy about physical intimacy because it’s never been something she’s been interested in before eric, and like frankly i think mermaids are pretty horny so ariel was used to the culture, it was just never something she ever did. when he tried to kiss her, she didn’t try to dodge him on purpose, she just gets a little fidgety and flighty when she’s nervous, and there was a lot going on that she wanted to see.

queen atlanta was her mother (changed from athena) and ariel looks like the near splitting image of her, as well as having her voice. ariel’s mother also had an infatuation with humans, which initially is was drew ariel to them. atlanta would take the family up to the surface, before she died, and while triton was careful about what humans he trusted, and the answer was little to none, atlanta was not. she had many human friends that she visited and trusted to be around her girls. one day while they are out, a boat approaches them rapidly and all of the children make it back into the water, but their mother does not. this raptures triton’s trust with humans completely. in reality, atlanta had befriended a human artist named duncan and posed for paintings. triton allowed this, thinking that humans weren't so bad. however kole, a rival artist, jealous of duncan's success and talent, tries to kill him by letting loose an avalanche, but atlanta, while pushing him out of the way, got crushed by the rocks herself. enraged, triton confronts kole, terrifying him and falls off the cliff. turning his anger to duncan and ready to destroy him, the voice of atlanta appears in the clouds asking triton to spare him. leaving with the unfinished painting of duncan's, he returns to the sea to mourn. ursula had interfered with queen atlanta’s death, pretending to be kole to stir up trouble which resulted in the sea queen’s death.

ariel was incredibly nervous to at eric wouldn’t want her anymore when she came back to him, she thought she had lost him but she knew she had to go back, because she had to see him again even if he didn’t want her.

ariel’s emotions are always displayed on her face, her heart is on her sleeve. she is incredibly easy to read as well as honest.

ariel and eric go on beach picnics frequently where eric brings her new foods to try, and ariel shows him fish that she calls up to the surface to meet them, one that he’s never seen before. any date they go on is a favorite for her because it’s all new, even if she’s been there before with him. she’s incredibly easy to please.

she adores wind chimes, especially those made out of seashells and sea glass, but especially little things she would’ve collected when she lived in the sea, it’s a new collection for her.

i play the xiang route bc i can’t resist long hair male wench but specifically projecting onto mc as depression hole cope wife and the only thing that happens is my brain turned into gelatinous goo and i was never able to open the game again without punching drywall and then punching drywall again in an unending cycle of playboy route agony

and also chanyu or briar route bc ive always wanted 2 had my asscheeks impersonally delivered to me in a cardboard box by a dark haired baddy that wants nuthing to do with me (still wants nothing 2 do with me by the end)

vy i love u so much do u know that, my wonderful angelcake and love of my life. also im putting this under the cut bc i like to talk

xiang route

general outlook: as people may not have assumed so ! xiang's route is a tough cookie and def not one of the easier ones. not harder than briar's route but absolutely up there under "stop giving the players a headache". but i'm taking what you said and imagining xiang taking an interest in you, the mc, because of your depression cope wife holexistence rather apparently disinterested behavior. he likes it when they play the cold shoulder, after all! though i feel that his route would be a very exciting one that makes u look forward to what happens next; it's never not lively without him and he just makes the dialogue so awfully funny and witty, you could make whole ass compilations out of just "things that xiang says in his route that i cannot get out of my mind".

it's not that hard to get the right answers with him, at the start, but the more it follows down the road of coming to a deciding point of what ending ur getting, it def gets harder. he either shuns you out like many others, because he just. might end up treating u like any other fling. or he'll want you to stay with him, but of course, getting to that point where he even considers that possibly is almost. painstakingly hard.

surprisingly though, i don't think the answers that indicate the most obvious interest in him would instantly lead to a good ending. i think it actually requires a balance...? of not. coming on too strongly and not vanishing from the face of earth. he is a bit of a tough cookie because he isn't always easy to read, but i feel that it'll pay off.

good ending: copium good ending is xiang is ur malewife and he loves u and cherishes u and shows u that every day somehow a good ending with xiang makes me picture a very toothy grin on his face, nearly smug, but genuine enough in itself, very telling of how happy it seems to make him that ur here with him. of course, nothing's ever perfect, but it seems that saying 'i love you' isn't anymore an intimidating feat as it was before, for him.

bad ending: of course, for that there are a multitude of options LMAO but it would def fall in the line of. xiang ending up just shoving u into a corner of 'like anyone else' and not heeding u any mind anymore. kinda just. lost his interest. he felt no spark. and he doesn't intend to linger around with u any longer. so he just kinda fucks off and moves on with his life - even if you express a strong dislike for that. but really? not his problem anymore. he can find someone else who would love to have fun with him <3

chanyu route

general outlook: if i had to give his route a difficulty rating, it would be an intermediate one? LIKE. he is not. as horribly emotionally messed up. but at the same time, he isn't someone who is impressed easily either. he is just. kinda there. but his route is fun. its interesting. i feel like u get a lot of entertaining moments with him and it hardly feels like it gets dragged out too long or is too bland. I DONT KNOW i just think his route is fun to play <3 go ham and entertain the buff man <3

i just think that in order to get the most out of the route, you just kinda have to keep his interest...? sort of show him that you're worth investing in, in a sense. if that makes any sense? like at the start, he def has hardly any interest in you, no signs of favoritism, no nothing. it's really You who has to get the ball rolling or nothing. is gonna roll at all here.

i think the tone of the route would have an interesting balance between being very entertaining but also exploring some rather. grim, darker sides. (think of how the og movie and its shift tone.) i just feel like that would be very interesting to see and feel out hehe.

good ending: what's a good ending with chanyu...? i feel that there isn't much to be said or done, in that case, since his. priorities do not lie with romance. i dont think there is rlly much happening, but i would like to imagine that the emphasis lies with how your relationship changed with him in the course of the route...? from someone for whom he didn't spare a second glance for to someone for whom he holds in high regard... i want that there is. a genuine sense of having build a bond... camaraderie except ur smooching ur fellow bro on occasion.

bad ending: u get murked by him, a classic <3 LMAO IM KIDDING BUT BUT. i think a bad ending with chanyu is one where. anything of the above mention just doesn't happen or dissolves...? perhaps even goes entirely south and you're left with an enemy made. i feel like his route in general is a lot more plot action, so i'd argue that there is a very. climatic moment in this ending, where ur on opposing sides with him. i have no idea, frankly, but. huh. looks like the u get murked by him ending rlly isnt that far off then.

Completed - Star Fox Zero

Before we can get into a proper conversation about "Star Fox Zero", you have to understand three things about my particular brain and biases:

I don't like claiming that I am good at anything. (Mostly, because I am not definitively the best at anything. All I can guarantee is base competency.)

I am good at "Star Fox 64."

I am a proficient bassoon player.

1 and 2 relate in a comedic way, sure. What's up with 3, though?

Well, I bring up the whole bassoon background because the bassoon is one of the more mainstream weird-ass musical instruments. It's a double-reed bass instrument that requires proper breathing control, responsive embouchure, memorization of proper fingering techniques (ha ha, yes, I know), and the ability to read in bass clef (and tenor, if you're dealing with some real dickhead composers.) A music ed teacher does not just hand a child a bassoon and tell them, "Good luck!" It requires musical competency and practicing. Just absolute shittons of hours of practicing so you don't sound like a dying duck. But, if you get good at it, you'll always have a seat in a band or orchestra. It's weird, sure, but it adds warmth and speed to bass lines. There's value in its weirdness, which I hope is something we know and appreciate, being denizens of this so-called hellsite.

What's the point of me bringing up playing the bassoon in a "Star Fox Zero" review? Because I am used to practicing weird shit, and that's 100% going to color my perspective in this game.

Also, I might like this series.

Just a teeny bit. (Hell, I even forgot a few things...)

"Star Fox Zero" is a 2016 rail shooter / driving game for the Nintendo Wii U. It is best classified as a soft reboot of both SNES' "Star Fox" and the Nintendo 64's "Star Fox 64", although it is far more comfortable hanging in the pockets of the latter. The beats should be fairly familiar to most "Star Fox" fans. Doctor Andross is being a scientific asshole; he's got the Lylat System curb-stomped; General Pepper hits up mercenary team Star Fox for help; lasers get jammed up nasal cavities. Ya know. Standard "Star Wars" meets "Bambi" plot, if you have the mind for it. (Or, if we want to be hyper specific, Shinto iconography meeting "Thunderbirds". The former comparison may be a bit more parsable, though.)

There's a veil of pity and tragedy around this game, which caused me to stay my hand in playing it until 2023. First of all, it's one of the last projects associated with former Nintendo president Satoru Iwata, who effectively died in the saddle. Like, what can I say about that situation but "Damn" and "RIP." Secondly, a lot of people were bitching about the controls. A lot. Lastly, I didn't even own a Nintendo Wii U until April of this year. I wasn't going to buy a console for one goddamn game, alright? That's not what a reasonable person does. Besides, so many Wii U games were being ported to the Switch. I was willing to wait a little while just to see if "Star Fox Zero" got to jump ship as well.

It's 2023. The Switch ship has sailed. Nintendo's eShop has closed. Wii U consoles are succumbing to memory loss. It's not now or never, but…c'mon. I know how the Nintendo used game market works. This is about the lowest price point before nostalgia and console degradation jack prices back up. And hey—the Wii U I bought did come with "Super Mario Maker." So I didn't buy a console for just one Wii U game. Ha! Ha…

Whaddya say? Want to start with ripping a bandage off first? Has to hurt more with fur, I'd imagine…

About those dreaded controls, then. Honestly? I didn't find them that unintuitive. I do think there's a problem that happens when a "Star Fox 64" brain maps onto them, though. Considering how outrageously popular that game is in comparison with its sibling titles, that's a fairly big hurdle to leap.

For the sake of this conversation, I'm going to show you my controller grips between "Star Fox 64" and "Star Fox Zero."

Here's "Star Fox Zero":

Obviously, we're working with wildly different control sets. The initial brain shock comes from moving primary functionality from face buttons to controller triggers. Like, when it's been memetically drilled into your head to tap the Z or R buttons twice to…well, you know the line. You're going to try that with the Wii U controller as well. Then, you're going to be very surprised to find bombs and lasers going off instead.

Basically, in "Star Fox 64", your left thumb is navigation, your pointer fingers are used for defensive actions/threading, and your right thumb is used for offense and specialty actions (evasive maneuvers, going into different perspectives, and hailing calls.) In "Star Fox Zero", your thumbs are handling navigation and evasive maneuvers while your pointers handle offense. For three out of your four play-responsible fingers, that's an inverse of operational duties. A bit tricky!

Having said that, I picked up on the thumb stick shortcuts within two practice sessions. Once I understood how to somersault with the sticks (left down, right up), I thought, "Well, can I U-Turn by left and right down?" And by God, that was correct! Didn't need anyone to tell my ass how to barrel roll. Figured that out, too!

Weapon targeting is a particularly contentious subject in this game. The game wants you to improve your accuracy by using both the cockpit (first person) view and the gyroscope controls in the Wii U gamepad to pick up your targets. While it can't be completely turned off, you can set the controls to only take gyroscopic input into account when you are charging lasers. And you know what? 100% do that. No need to have that always slipping around. There's exactly one boss I've encountered where having them on all the time helped, and that one was optional. And a dick. But, I suppose that's to be expected of a boss…

The last major controller issue has to do with the split of external ship and cockpit views being simultaneously displayed on your TV screen and your Wii U gamepad. Now, which view is where can be toggled by hitting the minus button, so you don't necessarily have to crane your neck down every time you need to consult something in one view or another. However, this dual screen setup is wholly a bad design choice. "Star Fox 64" was able to have the same functionality with a single screen and a dedicated button for flipping back and forth between views if you really had to do that. Which, honestly, was pretty rare to begin with. If something really needed to be put on the lower screen, that should have been a radar/map. Even, then. Lower-right corner of the TV screen. That's where "Star Fox 64" had it. Dead horse, beat.

It could've been fun to have a set of "Call Teammates" buttons down on the Wii U gamepad. Ya know. Just to harass Falco in the middle of a firefight. "Hey, girl. How's it going?" "NO TALKING WHILE THIS LIZARD IS TRYING TO EAT ME!" That kind of vibe.

And if for some reason you thought of something dirty involving Leon Powalski, that's between you and your morality-affiliated consultant of choice, my dude.

So, alright. You get your Arwing controls down. Congrats! You've got four more machines to learn! The main ship variants this time around are the Walker (think like "Star Wars"'s AT-ST, but made out of Arwing parts), the Landmaster (a tank with its own aerial form now because why not?), and the Gyrowing (a helicopter used for stealth and hacking missions.) The fourth, the Roadmaster, gets tossed in after you finish the game, so you don't have to sweat learning that one too much. It's like a hostile RV toy.

Of these, I took the most issue with the Gyrowing. It is easily outclassed and thrown away the first opportunity the game gets. Honestly, I know the Blue Marine gets shit-talked, but that submarine was at least solid at offense and chugging along. Gyrowings, oof. Not so much. Even the baby toy machine can outperform that thing. Absolutely ridiculous.

If I may speak positively, for just a moment—I actually liked the Landmaster design scheme better in this game than "Star Fox 64." Heresy, I know! I just didn't feel weighed down using it like I did in the past. And, granted, that may have been because the Titania level in "Star Fox 64" could really chunk up its framerate. But, here? It was smooth and responsive to what I needed it to do. Gotta award points where they are due.

Although, if you want to see some chunky framerates, go fight the Aquarosa boss. Or don't. (It's the pain-in-the-ass optional boss that I was ragging on earlier.) It's just one of those things where if you commit to fighting it, you've got to do it twice to get into two bonus stages. And, I mean, hell. Even Hercules did good enough fighting the Hydra once…

If I may give more credit, I also found the aesthetics of this game to be strong. I could have used better camera positioning for what I saw, sure. But, I genuinely liked what I saw. In particular, I really thought that the Titania level for this game was oddly beautiful, with pieces of debris from a nearby fight raining through the storm-swept desert atmosphere. The music for this game is on point, too. While some themes are recycled from "Star Fox 64", there is quite a bit of new music diversity. It's all composed gorgeously as well (if a bit excessively for Andross' theme.) If you want some samples, try out the following links:

In additional audio perks, there's a lot of returning voice actors from "Star Fox 64." I mean, not everybody. (Rick May's a notable exception, but the guy was having awful health towards the end.) Whoever couldn't get picked up got pulled from the 3DS remake as well. Considering how much the English version of "Star Fox 64" thrived on its hammy performance and cheesy dialogue, this is definitely a point in "Zero"'s favor. Frankly, I think some of the voice actors have even gotten better over time. Lyssa Browne particularly has come leaps and bounds in her performance as Slippy Toad, if you'll forgive the pun.

Appreciation of late 90s English video game dubbing is wholly a subjective matter. But, I do find something charming about its raw authenticity and goofiness. We might still have meme culture without one or two titles. But, man. "Star Fox 64," "Castlevania: Symphony of the Night," Metal Gear Solid," all of those "Resident Evil" games…The Internet would be a duller place without the vocal work from those games.

Speaking of all these credits—what credits is "Star Fox Zero" going to give you? Outside of general plot advancement, you can get medals for excellent performance. These are usually granted for kill counts, sequence breaks, collecting certain items, finishing a fight under a certain time limit, or general competency. Granted, earning these doesn't seem to reward the player with much. You do get access to bonus missions, but the greatest rewards are model swaps of your Arwing, a model viewer, and a sound test. Completely pointless—especially if you have access to the OST on YouTube or a couple of Amiibos laying around the house.

Beating the game will also open up an arcade mode where you can shoot through the entire game again in one run. That's a bit more tempting, but honestly, quite overwhelming even to someone like me. I mean, I can handle "Star Fox 64" because it's a quick hour. Going through a "Star Fox Zero" run could take several hours. That's a pretty big gamble, man. It feels like going back a step as well. Like, you know how much more polished I could be at "Star Fox 64" if I could just re-run specific levels on demand? I mean, I guess there's always save state abuse, but I'm trying to discuss playing these games through legal means, here.

I don't think the plot here is enough for a casual player to cling onto, either. Especially, again, if they've played "Star Fox 64" before. It's mostly just rehashing that script, but with Andross dicking around more with space portals than bioweapons. The whole experience comes off as less thought-out and/or mature than "Star Fox 64," even if that's a weird detail to bang on about. Like, I shouldn't complain about seeing clowns in a circus, should I? Trust me, I love the goofy goober banter everyone has. I just wish a little extra polish went into it. Especially for the intro. Like, God. I'm pretty sure that some Cornerian Minister of Propaganda wrote that thing.

Although, General Pepper is a huge asshole this time around. Like, holy shit. It would have literally been more ethical if he put two rounds in the back of Andross' head. You can't toss a mad scientist into another dimension and not expect him to come back and kick your ass Krang style. Not to mention how quick he was to ditch Peppy when the latter was in distress. Like, geez, dude. Isn't he your friend?

I did end up liking the Star Wolf beats better here. Mostly, because they weren't just chumps for the easy pickings, this time around. Also, the implications of whatever James McCloud is in this universe is significantly more horrifying than it was in the past…

In some ways, the problems with "Star Fox Zero" are the problems that have been with the "Star Fox" series since Game One. These games are siblings to titles like "Devil May Cry" and "Parasite Eve" in that all three were accidentally successful betas. ("Star Fox 64" and "Devil May Cry 3" may be even closer related in the "Oops! We succeeded even harder!" department.) If you don't anticipate something being successful, how much thought are you going to put into its future? Perhaps the only reason fans and executives sweat over this detail is in relationship to Fox, Falco, and Wolf's "Super Smash Bros." related popularity. Although, I pity anyone who would fret over lore for Ice Climbers or Mr. Game & Watch like some do for "Star Fox" characters…

Harder still is trying to keep gameplay fresh and relevant to modern audiences. I mean, let's be real. "Star Fox" games are essentially souped-up "Space Harrier" titles. They're concentrated, arcade-difficult challenges meant to test your memory and reflexes. In a world that values a game's breadth of content over mastery of skill or difficulty (minus FromSoftware titles), that's always going to chop off the tails of these kinds of games.

And, hell. I've heard the "controls suck" complaint before, too. It was just for "Star Fox Assault" instead.

My personal problem with "Star Fox Zero" lies more with my thoughts about stagnation versus radicality. Plotwise, this game takes its events way too conservatively. Control-wise, well…we know about how that ruffles feathers, don't we? If there was an inversion with these two details—having a wild, engaging plot with a standard control scheme—this could have been the revival Nintendo wanted for the series. At least, that would have made for a sweet struggle.

Developers and players want "Star Fox 64" again. But, what does that look like in a modern era? Hell, what's even the silver title to that game's gold? I mean, I'd accept several different answers, depending on what a player got out of each title. The only wrong answer would be "Star Fox Command." That melodramatic, noncommittal garbage got us into this mess.

Personally? If I had to make another "Star Fox" game?

The "Star Fox" series appeals to me in not only its learnable difficulty, but its comradery. Fox McCloud would not be the sort of character that I would want to play if he begrudged his teammates. (Eyes on you, Slippy haters.) He's trying to do the right thing, not only for his father's honor, but for their sakes as well. I would want to construct a game that puts more emphasis on teamwork, even in a single player setting. Now, what that looks like could be tricky. "Star Fox 2" and "Command" fell into traps trying to do that. But, I'd have to try to do something, even if it's banal as stat boosts or motivational dialogue via radio communications. (Although, resource scouting/sharing might be an interesting twist. Does your partner trust you enough to attempt shield repairs in a firefight? Hell, would you for them?)

Even if a single confrontation is all it takes to knock Andross out of a timeline, it's harder for another villain to get out of his shadow. (It doesn't help that every other Nintendo character gets dedicated villains as well. It's all patterns fixing patterns.) Maybe, we don't need to. Hell, I could easily see scenarios where investigating some forgotten lab of his unleashes some horrific bio-techno monstrosity that lays waste to a handful of planets. It's not the most intelligent solution, but hell, neither were Aparoids. Didn't mean they weren't a legit threat.

I mean, if we really want to get messed up, the Lylat System is very poachable, if you get my drift. Particularly, if the wrong set of hunters were to come across it…

The simple answer would be just to make "Mass Effect" or "Halo," but for furries. But, personally? I'd want to toss "Star Fox 64," "Star Fox Assault," "Sin and Punishment: Star Successor," "Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin," and "Resident Evil 4"into a blender and chug what comes out. I know. Absolute madman shit, especially considering how I kept getting sick from "Resident Evil 4"-related adrenaline rushes. I know what I want out of a "Star Fox" game, and that's to go fast, kill some messed-up stuff, and vibe with my teammates. If I do it with my head in a bucket, then it'll at least be authentic to what it'd actually be like if I had to dogfight.

The flesh is weak, but the brain is sharp. And man, does it crave high-speed violence.

"Star Fox Zero" brought a lot of emotions out of me. Satisfaction, for having finally experienced it. Frustration, for letting the opinions of others cloud my interest with it. Sadness, for how the series has languished. But, it's all in perspective. Yes, this came out a decade after a predecessor that I found distasteful. Yes, it's been seven years without another game. (Well, hell, not even that, if you want to toss in "Starlink: Battle for Atlas" or "Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.") The past is written. The future is unknown. I have what I have now, and I can find value in it. And, hell. As rough as that might feel, it's still not as raw as "F-Zero" fans have got it. Or even harder, "StarTropics" fans.

If you're looking for anything like a course of action from this evaluation, then I must recommend that you play "Star Fox 64" first. OBVIOUSLY. If that whets your appetite, fantastic! I can recommend you harder and/or weirder shit after that. Hell, maybe even this game, if you want to roll up your sleeves. As an introduction to the "Star Fox" series, it's about as appealing as a haunted house. But, if you are desirous of that kind of nail-biting shock, this is a solid game to play.

I wouldn't say that you have to be like me and pick up a Wii U for just this game. But, if you've got the console and ten bucks to spare, this game is cheap enough to pick up. And if you hate it like saner people do? Then, all you'll be out is a cheeseburger. Benefits of being a late adopter to a Nintendo game, for once! How often does that happen?

Do yourself a favor; dodge "Star Fox Command." Do an indie developer a favor; pick up "Ex-Zodiac." Do Rick May a favor; get your COVID-19 vaccinations and boosters. And, obviously…the last order writes itself, doesn't it?

Ok, so we got functional tattoos in the Ambitions EP, but good ole EA in their infinite wisdom decided to relegate them to the lamest locations imaginable. No sleeves, no full body tattoos, like wtf. #EAYouSuck

But as usual, the simming angels over at Mod the Sims came in C L U T C H, and CmarNYC created the incredible XCAS Core Mod: More Tattoo Locations.

☆ ☆ This mod expands a LOT of different CAS features, and most importantly adds more tattoo locations. ☆ ☆

It’s a core mod like AwesomeMod, so it conflicts with those mods, but the late great Twallan made a non-core version for those of y’all who use AwesomeMod. I use CmarNYC’s default core version.

There are a ton of different Basic or Full versions. I forgot what the difference is between Full & Basic, but I use the Full version.

The zip file includes a ton of flavors, that you can pick and choose from. It’s a lot, I know, so this is my setup (I’m on Origin 1.69 like a loser).

Once you have the mod installed in your Packages folder, and nothing’s conflicting, crashing or doing other satanic crap, now you’re ready to give your sims Full Body Tattoos!

Noah’s full body tribal tattoos, which my sim Nasir always wears, also require CmarNYC’s tattoo mod, and work the same way.

I feel like it’s more important to know about CmarNYC’s tattoo mod, because:

☆ ☆ There really is nothing different with Full Body Tattoos, than regular tattoos! ☆ ☆

If you know how to make regular tattoos, you already know how to make sleeves, full legs, back, torso & body tatts.

You can use ANY tattoo with CmarNYC’s tattoo mod, to apply tattoos all over the body--they’ll just rescale in weird ways, unless you’re explicitly making the tattoos to fit neatly over a sim’s arms (sleeves), legs, backs, torsos, or entire body (full). So I’ll show y’all how to go about making those--the same rules apply.

All the other tuts I’m seeing use Tattooinator, which I never used, I just use TSRW to make all my tatts.

I start out in GIMP with the image I want to turn into a tattoo.

It helps to have EA’s default skintone texture in the lower layer, so you can accurately scale the tattoo.

Then turn all the colors into the standard RGBY, so your tatt’s recolorable in CASt.

Then make an all black background, and add an all black Alpha channel.

Save the image as a DXT5 Interpolarted Alpha dds.

In TSRW, start a New Project, and go into Clothes > Human > Young Adult > Male > Naked (so TSRW doesn’t take 10 effing years loading all the clothes options).

I always clone EA’s Green Plumbob tattoo, I dunno why, LOL.

Import your texture in the Core section.

You’re not gonna be able to tell what’s going on, cuz TSRW’s preview viewer is hot garbage, and the texture’s alpha channel makes the texture look invisible until you go in-game.

Make sure to enable the Mask channels from False to True. so it’s recolorable. (Enable all 4 Masks Channels only if you use all 4 RGBY colors in your dds texture. Otherwise, just enable 3 if you just used RGB.)

And you’re done! Export your tattoo, install it, and have your sims regret all their life decisions!

Because they’re Ambitions tattoos, you can change size/scale, transparency/opacity, and of course CASt colors.

And best of all, Full Body AMB tatts won’t take up an accessory slot (even better: they won’t blur textures if you layer ACCs with Master Controller).

Jurdan Headcanon (Jude Duarte and Cardan Greenbriar)

Flowery Flour, Beeping Time Bombs and Chocolate Lips

Cardan decides to surprise Jude with a home-cooked meal (he read in a magazine that that is 2nd in the Top Ten Most Romantic Date Ideas! He wanted to choose the 1st but for the life of him couldn’t figure out what Net-flix and Chill meant). Jude has gone out with Vivi and so he has a few hours to prepare the food. He doesn’t think it’s going to be that difficult, there are instructions and tiny people showing the process on the Book of Mac (he imagines Jude exasperpatedly shaking her head and correcting him, “It’s called a MacBook, Cardan!)

He opens up the list of ingredients and copies it down onto a sheet of paper. Then he sets off for the nearest market, Walmart (Cardan nobody calls Walmart a market!). The door opens without his pushing it open. Hmm, maybe they have pixies to open it here.

The air is cool inside, conditioned by another Mortal device. He roams the aisles, searching for all the ingredients on his list. He’s making Chocolate Cake with Buttercream Frosting, he doesn’t understand most of those words but it is a cake so he thinks it’ll be alright. He finds most of the ingredients quite easily (although he’s still a bit confused what flour is and if it is indeed grounded up flowers). He’s only has milk left from the list.

He knows that they usually use the milk from cows in the Mortal World. He’s wondering where they keep the cows in this place. He stops a man with the word, Walmart tattooed on his shirt (he must be the head of this market).

“How can I help?” the man asks, turning to him.

“Oh yes, I will require your assistance in determining where the cows are kept.”

The man looks befuddled, “Sorry sir. We…don’t sell cows here.”

“No, I do not intend to purchase the cows, I desire only the milk,” Cardan clarifies.

“Oh! You want milk? Okay then, follow me.” The man sets off and Cardan follows. He then leads him to a glass case of packaged bottles. “Here you are.”

Cardan looks closely at the bottles and sees some labeled ‘milk’. “Will this suffice for Chocolate Cake with Buttercream Frosting?” he asks. He wants to make sure he’s using authentic ingredients (Jude would kill him is he mistakenly poisoned her).

“Yeah sure, dude,” the man replies.

Cardan is following along with the little lady on the U-Tube. It’s going perfectly. He’s even put on the right attire, a pink apron that says ‘Kiss The Cook’. He likes this idea, to give clear instructions for what to do even on the clothing. Maybe he should have some such thing sewed onto his kingly robes too (he thinks of Jude kissing him every time she reads it and grins happily. Oh yes, it is certainly a wonderful idea.)

When the lady, her name is Rosanna Pansino (he thinks this is quite a distinguished name and can’t understand why she would shorten it to ‘Ro’), says to whip the cream, he pauses. She didn’t ask him to purchase a whip. He checks the shelves, (maybe this is a normal kitchen tool?) and still doesn’t find one. He watches the video and realizes that she doesn’t use a whip at all, just some metallic contraption that he has in the kitchen too.

It takes him a few tries to crack the egg correctly (after this ordeal, his respect for his cooks has gone up drastically). Eventually the batter has been successfully transferred to a pan and placed inside the heating box (Oven). He sets the time on the dials and sits back to wait for it to be done.

In the mean time, he wonders at the bliss he sees on Mortals’ faces as they talk about chocolate. He decides to try some cocoa powder to see for himself if it is as good as they say. He picks up a spoonful of the powder and puts the whole thing in his mouth. His face shrivels up and he starts coughing madly. He drinks some wine to get the taste out of his mouth and thinks that Mortals have very strong taste buds to be able to not only endure that but to also enjoy it.

When the timer on the heating box has finally come down to 10 seconds he watches it carefully, unsure what is about to happen. 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 and then…beep, beep, beep! He startles and tries to figure out what to do. Ro did not show this part at all. He tries to remember what he’s seen in those moo-vies he and Jude sometimes watch. Beeping means…time bomb! The heating box has overheated or some such and is about to explode.

He runs out of the house and crashes into someone. No, not someone, Jude.

“Cardan, what are you- what’s happened?” she asks, holding his flour covered arms and staring into his panicky eyes with confusion.

“The heating box is about to explode!” he blurts out.

“The heating box? Oh, the oven. What did you do to it?” she asks, raising one brow.

“I tried to make a Chocolate Cake with Buttercream Frosting and I followed Ro’s instructions perfectly. But at the end of the timer it started beeping like a time bomb!”

“Oh my god, oh my god,” Jude says and bursts out laughing. He loves this sound and his eyes go dreamy for a moment, all his panic forgotten and his body relaxes.

“What is it? How are you not worried?” he asks, when he’s finally regained his wits. She pulls him back into the house and opens the heating box and takes the pan out after putting on gloves (Cardan understands the importance of looking good but is this really the time to be accessorizing? But since he knows nothing about this, he stays wisely silent).

“That’s just the sound it makes when it’s done baking,” she informs him, smiling fondly.

“Oh. Well, that is bizarre and unnecessarily alarming. A tinkling of bells would have worked just fine,” he says petulantly, crossing his arms and frowning (Jude thinks this is simply adorable, even if she’ll never tell him that).

They continue the decorating together. He likes this a lot better. He’s gotten many many kisses. The apron is definitely working. They finally eat the chocolate cake. It takes a lot of persuading on Jude’s part (maybe even some bribing). She doesn’t understand why he’s glaring suspiciously at it. When she finally feeds him a piece, his face relaxes.

“Oh. Oh.” He says reverently. “I understand now.”

Jude is expectedly puzzled but forgets all about it when he kisses her. Mmm, Cardan hasn’t wiped his mouth properly and he tastes like chocolate but she certainly isn’t complaining.

NCT’s Mark Lee on Dreams, Instagram Poetry, and Growing Up

Mark has a lot going on — but he’s making time for poetry, introspection, and, of course, the members of NCT Dream. - Vivien Wu

“I’ve been thinking about dreams a lot these days!” Mark Lee exclaims over Zoom from SM Entertainment’s Seoul headquarters.

The 21-year-old leader of NCT Dream is enthusiastic as he mulls over the meaning of dreams, his back against a wall of pink and yellow flowers assembled by his fellow NCT members. He’s wearing a simple, white tee, and when he gestures with his hands, you can catch glimpses of the friendship ring that all seven members of NCT Dream wear as a symbol of their bond.

“I actually feel like dreams hold a large portion of a life, and I’m not just talking about the subconscious dreams that we all have when we sleep,” he continues. “If you put it in a way where dreams are actually things that motivate us, and the drive that keeps us going, especially as a strongly driven person myself, I feel like… a guy with no dreams is like…” He looks up, thinking. “…A car with no engine. So, I think it’s as important as yourself. That’s how deep I go with dreams.”

His interest in dreams is fitting, considering that they are also the central, underlying concept to the lore behind NCT Dream’s parent group, NCT. They connect their three subunits, NCT 127, NCT Dream, and WayV, in a complex, Inception-inspired fictional universe where dreams are the only way they can find each other, and where upon uniting they can mix to form new subunits collectively referred to as NCT U. In practical terms, this has resulted in a 23-member mega-group that is multifaceted in every way — from their musical styles and visual aesthetics to their cultural backgrounds and spoken languages.

NCT Dream’s original teenage concept meant that members were supposed to “graduate” when they came of age, and as the oldest, Mark was the first to leave the group at the end of 2018. Having grown attached, however, fans were devastated at his departure; after a year of separation, SM announced that the graduation system would be scrapped and that he would rejoin the group. Their new album, Hot Sauce, is the first with Mark in over two years. As fellow member Haechan declared in an interview with Teen Vogue earlier this week, “Mark [is] very special. NCT Dream means Mark.”

But before the rapper led NCT Dream, and before he joined NCT U and NCT 127 and SuperM — the man is in high demand — Mark’s childhood dream was writing. He grew up in Toronto, and through doing school projects and essays quickly discovered that he had a natural way with words. Inspired by Percy Jackson author Rick Riordan, Harry Potter, and James Patterson, Mark dreamt of becoming an author, long before he was recruited by SM at a global audition in Canada in 2012. “When I was in school, I was always the kind of guy who would write more than expected, and that became a thing that clicked for me,” he says. “I was like, ‘Maybe it’s something that I naturally do?’ But then that kind of turned into rap writing too, so I guess they kind of clicked together.” It explains his prolific career as a lyricist; since debuting, he’s amassed over 30 songwriting credits across his various groups, contributing to songs as iconic as NCT U’s “Boss,” NCT 127’s “Cherry Bomb,” and NCT Dream’s “Chewing Gum.”

Even with such an extensive body of work, however, penning lyrics hasn’t satiated his appetite for literary expression. In an interview with Japanese magazine Men’s Non-No, he revealed that he still hopes one day to write a book, whether that be a novel, autobiography, or something more philosophical.

In the meantime, he’s taken to writing what are basically short poems on his Instagram, which he created just a few months ago. He’s gathered over 4.5 million followers since then, but having such a large audience hasn’t deterred him from being endearingly vulnerable with the way he writes. When I refer to them as poems, he laughs and looks embarrassed, but when I ask him to tell me the stories behind them, he’s enthusiastic again. They’re short, but offer brief glimpses into Mark the writer — sharp, inquisitive, and thoughtful. As pieces of literature, they’re a little rough around the edges, but the sincerity he’s known for shines through, illuminating the introspective, philosophical side that may not be so obvious in person.

His first poem, loosely titled “Late Night Scribbling,” put into words his musings about sleep, thoughts, feelings, and writing. It meanders from topic to topic, hovering between feelings of hope and hopelessness, before ending with a comically awkward “haha.”

“I actually wrote that by imagining how I wanted to organize my Instagram page,” he explains. “I was thinking of creating an Instagram, then I realized that, well, I’m not really a picture kind of guy, I’m not really a travelling kind of guy… I kind of studied who I am first, and I [asked myself], ‘What’s something that I can really portray in an intimate way?’ and it turned out to be writing.”

“I started to brainstorm what kind of topics I could write about, and then from there on, I started to write a little each and every night, and that turned into Late Night Scribbling,” he continues. “That kind of gave me courage to start Instagram in the first place, that piece of writing.”

Two weeks later, he followed it up with “Black Socks,” a whimsical ode to, well, black socks — complete with accompanying photos of him wearing said socks. Immediately, it feels more confident and cohesive than its predecessor. Using the neat and tidy look of black socks as a metaphor, he describes his own mindset for living life: “Pleasure from perfect alignment; That also goes for my ability to be parallel with my thoughts and actions; I try to live out what’s in my mind, and keep it consistent even when forgotten like a working habit.”

Comments on the posts praise his writing and encourage him to continue sharing these small pieces of himself. On the stage, Mark takes on a confident, larger-than-life persona, while in vlogs and spoken interviews, he’s a bubbly character full of laughter and boyish charm. What the poems show is that, beneath these outer appearances, there’s another layer of complexity that is yet to be fully explored, and it’s not surprising that fans want to know more.

His day job as a K-pop idol doesn’t allow a lot of time for hobbies, though, and he confesses to not having written much lately. Despite that, he’s determined to stay in the industry for as long as possible. “Longevity is something that I’ve always been aiming for,” he says. “I’m willing to do this for a long time, and that requires a lot of work. I’m willing to take that as a challenge and I’m trying to stay as long as I can, but with quality.”

That focus on quality informs his preparations for the upcoming promotions with NCT Dream. In both their fictional world and ours, NCT Dream are a central component of NCT by virtue of their unique focus on growth — the seven members were aged between 14 and 17 when the group first debuted in 2016. Fast-forward five years, and the members are now 19 to 21, having reached a milestone in January when the youngest, Jisung, finally became a legal adult in Korea. When asked if he feels like an adult yet, though, Mark gives an extremely relatable answer with zero hesitation.

“I still feel like I’m in middle school, I’m gonna be totally honest. I swear to God, I feel like I’m… All right, I’ll put it up — I feel like I’m in high school!” He laughs. “I even had this talk with Jisung, ‘cos he’s the latest that turned into an adult. He said that he still feels like he’s a student, he doesn’t feel like he’s 20 [19 in international age] right now.”

It’s been a long time since all seven Dream members — Mark, Renjun, Jeno, Haechan, Jaemin, Chenle, and Jisung — have released an album together, and as the first full-length album since their debut, the fan anticipation is palpably intense. Mark himself has mentioned in various vlogs how important he believes this comeback to be, and that conviction becomes obvious whenever he talks about it.

“We had a talk all together, the seven of us, without any cameras or anything. I brought all the guys together and we talked before the whole momentum started, and I said that I’m willing to put my everything on this one. Like, I always had, but I feel like… the whole universe, or like— ” He pauses, trying to figure out how to articulate himself, and his next line is the most emphatic of our whole conversation. “There are things that are out of our control, but we can see and feel when the pieces match together sometimes, and I feel like this specific moment, this particular album, kind of had those essential parts.”

He’s thinking about all of the context surrounding this comeback: the group’s coming of age, the reunion of all seven members, the scale of the album, the fact that Jisung has only just recovered from a leg injury that meant he couldn’t dance for months — even the fact that 2020 was, against all odds, the best year yet for NCT, with release after release bringing them unprecedented success and momentum.

“I felt that coming and I explained all of that [to the group],” he continues. “This whole period of time has a lot of meaning to it, and we’re not taking that for granted, we’re working hard.” With everything that’s happened, Hot Sauce is a historic moment for NCT Dream, and that’s been reflected in their numbers — the album clocked over 1.7 million pre-orders, obliterating their previous record of 500,000 for last year’s EP, Reload.

Their familial bond and the success that has come with it is the culmination of years spent living, working, and growing up together. The members have collectively missed out on key experiences that most teenagers might take for granted, distanced as they are from normal life, and the group also benefits from an unusually loose adherence to traditional Korean age hierarchy. The result is a brotherhood that goes beyond just being colleagues. “What we have is pretty intimate, and it’s also genuine,” Mark says.

About his role, he is matter of fact. “I’m by far the most easily approachable punching bag for the team. I am not… complaining…” He laughs. “But all jokes aside, I feel like my role for this team… Yes, I am the oldest and I am the leader but I’m also… In Korea, in the culture, age is very important, but we’ve come so far that all those borders kind of just vanished and we’re all pretty much friends, and I guess I’m just a friend of theirs too.”

It’s true that, despite being the leader, his friendly personality and endearingly awkward mannerisms mean that he commands about as much authority as a small puppy. Instead, much like a puppy, he is showered with love and affection (fellow member Chenle refers to Mark as his son and his actual puppy Daegal as Mark’s little sister), but that doesn’t mean he isn’t a dependable leader figure. The opposite is true — in Renjun’s words, Mark’s presence unites the group in a way that makes him irreplaceable.

And while this may be the fifth year since their debut, in the grand scheme of things, the members of NCT Dream are still very, very young — by most standards, they would still be considered to have their entire careers ahead of them. Growth has brought them here, but where does Mark think it will take them in the future?

second, there’s been a lot of chit chat lately about all the heartrender husband fans combusting over Simon Sears’ interview and the many many feelings that a certain grumpy bear gives us for his one (1) soft spot and ray of sunshine despite all his fragility and fear. i was wondering, if you had any thoughts on how it looks on the flip side for fedyor? i cant imagine being married to the General’s right hand man is easy (it’s both the safest and most dangerous place for Ivan to be).

Okay first of all, the first part of your ask is so sweet that I read it like three different times and was like wow are u sure. Second, boy oh boy can I use those positive adult vibes (even if they sound slightly like a porno 😂) because it has been the few weeks from hell. Job rejections, family health drama, moving hassle, and other such nonsense, to the point where if either myself or a member of my family has inadvertently insulted a leprechaun, I hereby apologise deeply and unreservedly on our behalf. Sheesh.

Anyway, never mind all that. We are indeed losing our minds slightly over said interview, for obvious reasons, but yes, Fedyor. Obviously he is Ivan's little ray of sunshine and one (1) weakness and the person he allowed himself to fall in love with despite losing the rest of his family, all of which are ship dynamics that drive me/us promptly feral. I definitely feel, however, that Fedyor has plenty of ferocity of his own, which is one of the reasons Ivan is drawn to him. Book!Fedyor tells Alina in the carriage scene that he became a Heartrender instead of a Healer (despite being of a Healing temperament) because he thought that he could do more good for people as a soldier, including when he has to kill. He also says that being a Corporalki is the hardest of all Grisha paths and requires the most training and study. I imagine that Fedyor was pretty good especially at the book learning part of his training, is interested in and dedicated to Grisha lore and history, and about finding way to use that beyond the obvious and making the Grisha appreciate who they are as a people and what their purpose in Ravka really is. And I'm not just saying that because I am also a historian and like to project onto my favorite characters. Shh.

Fedyor is obviously the total opposite of Ivan, personality-wise, but I think that is also why they complement each other. Fedyor helps Ivan lighten tf up and eat a pink cookie at a party, and Ivan helps Fedyor cut directly through the bullshit when he needs to. Living in the Little Palace and around the royal court, as members of General Kirigan's inner circle, obviously requires a touch for politics and diplomacy that Fedyor is far better at than Ivan, but that means his instinct is likewise to smile and humor people even when he wants to tell them to fuck off. Cue Ivan coming along and telling them to fuck off, which means they can blame Ivan for it and not Fedyor, and Ivan is perfectly 100% fine with everyone thinking he is the biggest grump to ever grump, since the only people whose opinions he cares about are Kirigan and Fedyor. Oh Ivan.

Fedyor is also outgoing and likes to have fun and is probably on good terms with most of his compatriots. He's clearly friends with Nadia since we see them arm in arm at the winter fete in mlm/wlw solidarity. He is also Ivan's Anger Translator, and if people have something they want to tell Ivan, they have a bad habit of telling Fedyor instead and trusting him to pass it on, rather than talking to Ivan themselves. (Fedyor: honey do you think this is even a slight problem? Ivan: no what are you talking about, it's great.)

I do think that Fedyor is just as frightened of losing Ivan as Ivan is of losing him, though for different reasons. It helps for him that they're usually in the field together (judging by his comment to Kirigan in 1x06 assuming that he and Ivan are going after Nina together) and facing the same things and same danger, even if it causes Ivan anxiety for this exact reason. I do appreciate that none of us have bothered to include any homophobia in Grisha culture, or exclude the possibility that Ivan and Fedyor could indeed be married in a church ceremony in the Ravkan liturgy. There's probably some side eye toward their relationship in wider Ravkan society, sure, but that is also tied up with being Grisha and the prejudices that they already face for being different. Behind the walls of the Little Palace, though, that is not really a factor and not something that they have to deal with. People are surprised that Fedyor and Ivan are together not because they're both men, but because "you're so nice and he is so... Ivan..."

Fedyor: I know, I know. But I love him anyway.

I also think that Fedyor is deeply protective of Ivan, not least because he is the only one who knows the truth about him being fragile and losing loved ones and everything else that he has been through, which is why one of my favorite headcanons is Fedyor going absolutely apeshit if Ivan is ever seriously hurt. Likewise, you can call Ivan grumpy in a joking fashion, and Fedyor will chuckle and agree with you, but anything else and his eyes turn red and the Heartrending hands come out like what u say about my husband bitch. Only Fedyor is allowed to roast Ivan in depth at all, according to Fedyor, and he will Let You Know if you transgress.

(Also why I want Ivan and Fedyor to meet the Crows again, Ivan sees Jesper and goes NEMESIS, and Fedyor just goes MURDER!!!)

Anson Mount about his character, The Virtuoso: "The protagonist is a killer, a good one, one who perhaps comes from a line of killers, possibly even sociopaths. But there is something in this man that is able to step back, reconsider his lot in life, and determine that he is not defined by his lineage, nor his previous actions. Maybe this is his virtuosity."

About a project that leans heavily into mystery: "Raw information isn't handed to the audience. It is intimated, hinted at. It requires active listening and perhaps a bit of imagination on the part of the viewer. If we've done our work right, both of those engagements will happen."

About characters having no names in the movie, only going by The Virtuoso (Anson Mount), The Mentor (Anthony Hopkins), The Waitress (Abbie Cornish), etc: "It's one of the things that initially drew me to the script. I'm not entirely sure I can put my finger on it, but something about that choice makes the whole story... larger? More universal? More of an allegory? Something. Obviously, it's the type of thing that one notices more on the page, but I think the audience will notice it as well for reasons I'd rather not spoil for people."

About Anthony Hopkins: "Very early in my career, I once received an email from a publicist who wanted to prepare me for a press junket. It was one sentence and it read, 'Say nice things about everything.' I relate this story to stress how we tend to default to such a mode when discussing our work and relationships in this business. But with Tony, whatever I could possibly say to explain his generosity of spirit, his professionalism, and his character would pale in comparison to the experiencing of it. I believe this completely messed-up form of mentorship became the seed for The Virtuoso's distrust in everyone including The Mentor which, ironically, is regarded by The Mentor as an achievement."

About Abbie Cornish's character, The Waitress: "The plot of The Virtuoso, like many great scripts, is really quite simple: a professional killer begins breaking his own rules because he develops a conscience and does not know what it is. Just like anyone in the world of this movie, The Waitress is never not potentially dangerous. She is simply the vehicle by which he arrives at the ultimate choice: will he ever allow himself to fully trust another human being or will he not? Doing so promises risk and hope. Not doing so promises the same, secure road. But in either case, as Ray Bradbury so brilliantly wrote, 'Here There Be Tygers.'"

The Virtuoso arrives on Digital, On Demand, and in a limited theatrical release on April 30. The Blu-ray and DVD will arrive on May 4.

plus, she sometimes gets embarrassed even when trying to say a simple "i love you"

shows her affections mostly with actions, like making things for you, listening when you talk (even if it's not about something she's usually interested in) and hugging you all the time

doesn't even get mad even when you interrupt her work

quite the opposite actually! she gets more energetic after seeing your face
