He would put it through this ventilator at the hour that he thought best, with the certainty that it would crawl down the rope and land on the bed. It might or might not bite the occupant, perhaps she might escape every night for a week, but sooner or later she must fall a victim.
Okay THIS is why this is a fridge horror case to me, rather than “phew, I thought it was ghosts, but it has a natural explanation!” The eebie jeebies that the idea of this snake crawling over the intended victim, night after night, gives me are beyond words. That the only reason she would survive each morning was out of chance and luck that she didn’t stir in her sleep at the wrong moment, or that something else didn’t alarm the snake, or…who knows what else.
And that sooner or later, that luck would run out—just like it did for Helen’s sister, and how it would have for Helen herself had she not listened to her ‘womanly nerves.’
Magic whumper whose 'restraint' of choice is his loyal pet snake. At whumper's request it will coil itself around wrists, ankles, a throat. Its grip is painful. Its bite is worse.
