Omg I finally got a typewriter after so long wanting one! It's a Smith Corona Skyriter and I found it at a thrift store an hour or so from where I live. It is the perfect weight, height, and there's enough tinkering to do on it to make it work perfectly that I feel energized just thinking about how I'm going to go around doing just that. This is a project I've been waiting for for so long! Wish me luck! I'll show you guys pics of the typewriter and let you know how it goes!

As soon as I can look at this typewriter for more than 5 seconds I’m removing the ribbon and putting it on the typewriter that doesn’t eat brand new very nice cotton typewriter ribbons. When I can look at it for even longer I’ll see if I can fix it, or if it’s better to sell (I guess I don’t really need 3 typewriters).

IDK if it’s the model or this typewriter in particular, but the Smith Corona Classic 12 has been a lemon when it comes to moving the ribbon. First the mechanism was gummed up with ancient grease and wouldn’t move until I degreased it, then it struggled to advance the ribbon at all. Now it won’t move at all unless I do it manually, leaving the letter slugs to slap the same spot over and over again until it tears a hole in the ribbon.

One of my personal best thrift store scores. For $30 I got a nearly perfect condition Corsair Delux off FB marketplace. I should have taken ‘before’ pics because she definitely needed a clean-up, but structurally she’s totally sound and working. Now we’re just waiting for a new ribbon to arrive in the mail. I’m in love.

The Silence and its Companion

Printed on my recently rescued Smith Corona 3600 Personal Word Processor!

Hi Tumblr folks, you get to know more details about the machine than other websites! It's in perfect working condition... except one thing. The floppy disk drive isn't working! I've opened it up and found what was wrong, however! It's just that the belt for the drive is old and loose, so I've pulled it out and ordered a variety of replacement sizes!

Once I've done that all I need is a USB floppy disk drive and I can create, save, and transfer writing digitally from my PWP~ Super excited about that!

I'll be honest, it's kind of nerve-wracking writing on this thing currently because there's no way to save progress without the diskette drive, and thus if the power is interrupted, I lose everything. @_@

I just opened the body of my Skyriter and learnt that my machine is from 1954! I don't know why but it's making me feel emotional to hold something old like this knowing that I'm taking the care and time it requires to bring it back to its former glory. I still need to get the products I need to clean it but I was excited to open it and discover its serial number.

This is where it's at for the moment. As you can see, it's dirty, and at first some of its typebars were badly crooked (especially the ?/ that was laying sideways on top of others) but I managed to set them straight again just with my fingers yesterday so now all the letters are sitting at a proper place except for two of them sticking a bit on the landing. It's going to require more tests later on when it has a ribbon to type with to make sure the letters are properly aligned, but this is going to be the last bits I'm going to be working on.

So excited!
