Scartember Prompt Exm. #1
Building Explosion// Injury Blindess, Broken Bones, Injury. From the 39 clues fandom, The Maze of Bones, Explosion of the Franklin Institute.
Darkness was all that Ted saw as he stared upwards- no, downwards? Possibly even sideways? He was faced in an unknown direction, his breathing ragged and his skin felt pierced, like a needle to cloth, or a pin to paper. At every breath, more debris stumbled upon him, his head spun and his body ached with numbness.
"Ted? Ned?" A voice called, somewhere from above him. His sister most likely, her voice was strained and desperate, like it was frantic but injured. He heard a chocked sob emerge from somewhere above him, while he attempted to shift his already numb and seemingly dying body, he felt no debris moving and no cement shifting.
"Sinead?" He tried to call, his voice weak and chocked, every word was like inhaling a pound of smoke and dust, he coughed, only opening the opportunity for more dust to infect his sinus's.
"Ted! Where's Ned?" She yelled back, it might have been a strand of confusion, but he thought maybe her voice seemed more fresh upon the relief of discovering her triplet brother was okay and alive, one of them at least.
Ted couldn't see anywhere he looked, he found the strength to shift his body in an attempt to sit upwards, but his head was met with a large slab of rock as he screamed out in pain, his forehead felt hot, not like a fever, but like someone had taken a burning knife and stabbed him in the forehead. He felt a thick, liquidly substance drip down his forehead.
"Ted! What the hell did you just do?" Sinead reacted to his cry, he tried to find it in his head to well up enough strength to reply, but he couldn't.
"I can't see!" He screamed back, it felt like he had to push all the air out of his lungs just to say it, but he did. He shifted his body every possible angle to try and see the light, he even tried clawing his way through debris and what felt like a shelf, to no avail, Sinead screamed back.
"What do you mean you can't see? It's daytime!" She asked, desperately, he tried yelling, but right as he welled up the strength, a new voice entered the discussion.
"Sinead? Teddie? What happened, are you okay?" Ned screamed, Ted felt his eyes light up and a big relief be lifted off his chest as his brothers voice called out. They were all alive, injured and barely living, but alive.
"Ned!" The two screamed at the same time, as the three desperately tried getting out of the debris and called for help, within ten minutes, an ambulance came barreling down the streets, lights and siren on, although Ted could not see the truck or lights, his siblings luckily could.
"Ambulance! Are there any survivors?" One yelled, Ted wasn't sure who he was yelling to, another person or them, but he tried to scream, a voice piped up.
"Us! Me and my brothers, we're here! I can't see them, help!" Sinead screamed, many voices called out commands and soon were able to locate Sinead, when she explained to them about her and her siblings, the officers and workers came looking for he and Ned.
"We're lifting the shelf on three! One, two, three!" A voice shouted, on three, Ted felt a huge weight lifted off his body, there was still other rocks and slabs and debris pieces on his body, but he could feel an airstream now.
"Head injury, shattered or fractured wrist, some broken ribs, maybe something with his legs, we gotta get him out!" A woman screamed, as more rocks and pieces were lifted off, the woman spoke.
"Your sister said you're Ted? Or Ned maybe, who are you?" She asked, Ted felt a small well of tears build up, he was only a teenager and he was having pieces of a building pulled off him.
"I'm Ted, I can't see anything, how did you find me?" He asked, just from how quiet the room went, a few of the nearer voices silenced, including hers.
"Ted, it's six-pm and bright outside, we can see everything fine, is there something wrong with your eyes?" She suggested, it dawned on him that this incident most definitely could have blinded him.
"Augh.. my head, god everything hurts." He tried explaining about how he couldn't see, but his body ached too badly. He soon felt arms pick up, male arms definitely. He was soon placed on a stretcher as he felt himself lose consciousness, a voice soon piped up once again.
"Ted! Don't die, are you okay?" Sinead asked, he tried to force a smile, but he wasn't able to, he simply began asking.
"Why am I on a stretcher and you aren't? Did I get injured that badly?" He asked, as she did, another person stepped in, he could hear their shoes clearly.
"We deduced, Ted, you may have some sort of visionary impairment. As well, you have a broken leg, a sprained wrist, a small head laceration, and some fractured ribs, look like you got it the worst, eh bud?" The doctor asked, as he listed all of Ted's main injuries, he could hardly believe it. He was lucky to be alive, sure, but also it felt like he didn't even want to be.
Soon, he was wheeled into an ambulance while his siblings were taken into another one, he heard Ned crying as they shut the door, and one last question pass Ned's lips before he couldn't hear him.
"Is Ted going to die?" He asked, a chocked sob came from Sinead before he heard the doors slam shut.

Shap
Monday 28th August
A week catching up with a few friends hiking around the maze of tracks around Shap village, based at New Ing Lodge.
Scott and Leigh Ann have been at New Ing for almost 13 years now and in that time it is barely recognisable from when they first bought it. Most bed and breakfast guests are walking the Wainwright Coast to Coast long distance path, though the whole house is rented by groups at weekends which gives the staff a break. There is camping in the large garden at the rear, and three brand new self catering apartments in an adjacent renovated barn. It’s become something of an Empire.
I’m parked up on the top field by the children’s playground and vegetable garden, and have great views over Shap fells and the regular (at this time of year) murmurations of starlings in the late evening.
Roja’s getting some family time, as his cousin is here who he spent a lot of his first year with.
Over the Bank Holiday weekend some good friends, Frank and Sinead, have been up, so there’s been a bit of catching up, and some exiting adventures locally with Scott’s little ones, Maggie and Arthur.
The team photos are up on Knipe Scar in a tremendous afternoon adventure through the jungle that is the bracken at the moment, it has grown to 5 feet high in recent weeks. The other two dogs are Frank’s, Nora and Dave. The adventure culminated at the Pools of Doom with the kids, and Scott, paddling (and falling) with the dogs.
After just two and a half years fairly heavy use, the diesel heater in the van has packed up. It is displaying an ‘error 3’ which indicates a glow plug problem. These are Chinese 5kw heaters, quite cheap and efficient, and still probably better value than the others on the market, even with a fault after 30 months. Bad news that it malfunctioned, good news that it malfunctioned here, and I’ve managed to get it booked in in South Lakes for a replacement on 11th September. A replacement glow plug and its fiddly fitting is possible, but around £150, and not sensible as other things could well go wrong. A new one is £225 with the fitting on top.
Until then I’ll hang around the Eastern fells here. The weather is more like autumn than summer, but that quite suits me, and I will take the chance to get a few other van jobs done.
