Rewatching OFMD for Science purposes, and finally actually listened to the last song of episode 1, Moondog's "High on a Rocky Ledge", and--
Tumblr media
That's the verse being sung as the camera pans up the mast to all the pirate flags. And like--
Stede's fallen from his high position-- his old life is dead now. With the actions of this episode, he's fallen past the relatively recoverable status of "eccentric rich weirdo" right down to "criminal (assault, manslaughter, piracy)" -- which is also, well, punishable by death. In the eyes of the law, he's a dead man walking. But this is the world he has to be in if he's going to be with... whatever (whoever) he's waited his whole life for.
(There are also a lot of instances for Stede where major Life things happen high up or on ledges. The hoisting of the flags is the beginning of Real Piracy. Stede is hanged above the deck and begins to die before being cut down by one of Ed's men, leading to their first meeting. Ed and Stede have their first successful fuckery from an upper level of the ship, leading to their first embrace. And they make their deal to learn from one another up there too, with Stede's leg stuck out over the ledge.)
The song then continues through the entire credits, only hitting the last word riiiight at the end, indicating that this fella was timed to do that:
Tumblr media
According to a Genius Lyrics, "Edel" means "noble," and "mädel" means girl, so the first line of the second to last verse here translates to "now I (a noble) am my girl's vice" -- and... like, okay, okay, "landed gentry" doesn't quite mean "noble" and I realize calling Ed "baby-girl" is a fandom thing but look--
These dang writers like to play with parallels, and mirrors, and piles of other neat structural tricks.
And I don't know how yet (though I could make some guesses), but I bet a million zillion dollars that David fucking Jenkins' overall narrative arc and finale beats for this entire show are telegraphed, intentionally, via the lyrics of this god. damn. song.

The Infinite Dungeon Game Session 2
Click Here - The Infinite Dungeon Session 1 Session 2
"So tell me. What brings you comfort?"
Guthrie@guthrie-odonto loves wandering through the wilds. Through the forests. Nature and birds bring him peace of mind. Lyr@Lexarga seeks comfort of a boat on the open sea. The salty breeze of the ocean and the gentle rocking of a ship bring her stability and calm. Lorem@moreclaypigeonsseeks the warmth of moondogs after a long day. Cuddling with these huge glittering, gleaming, glowing and glistening dogs brings her serenity. Damien@abstractbabble wears a lot of woven friendship bracelets around his wrists, he uses them to fiddle with them every now and then to comfort himself.
Once more, each member of the group wakes up in a cell. Cobblestone all around, ground, walls, ceiling. A thin straw matt on the ground. Each of them quickly determine, that they have been somehow reset to the first floor where they started their venture before. However, this time they each find themselves in a different cell to before. Each of them uses the tools to their disposal, just as before. Guthrie uses the key he found the first time around. He starts walking down the narrow corridors to find the others. Lyr wakes up in her cell and once she oriented herself, she starts her attempt to break out of her cell. Brute force leads to success and the lock of the cell's door falls to the ground. It's almost a bit too easy, as if the lock was possibly loosened up to begin with. All characters notice, that aside from torn clothing, their previous wounds are all gone and they have the full arsenal of spells back at their disposal. Lorem decides to use her keys again, but as she approaches the door, she notices that the door is already unlocked. Without any further thought, she leaves the cell and marches down the corridors. Damien wakes up in his cell, and he is pissed to say the least. Not only remembers he very much the moment he.. supposedly died - he is done with all this. He does not want to leave. He notices though, that his jacket is gone. He beautiful jacket was taken from him and it's not with him. Below: Audio Snippet from the Session. DM@siriwesen telling Player @abstractbabble that Damien's jacket is missing.
Audio Transcript: Siri "Well, as you slowly awaken, you notice.. maybe a couple of things. But first of all. Your jacket is gone." Jack: "They're gonna fucking pay, they're gonna fucking pay! You took his jacket, are you fucking kidding me? YOU TOOK HIS JACKET?! [gasps for air] Why did you take his jacket, what did the jacket do to you??? That.. That was probably the most expensive item he probably wore, and you TOOK IT FROM HIM? WHY IS IT GONE?!" This - and a mysterious note reading "Check outside. It's okay" is enough to lead him to leave his cell. Luckily, the door is unlocked. Draped over one of the two large clay pots in the left corner of the corridor is his jacket. It looks washed. Damien takes his jacket, and then decides to give the jars a closer look. Guthrie keeps following the corridor, hoping to meet one of his companions. He gets jumped by a skullbug, and it just barely misses him with its sharp claws. It blocks his path. "It's shanking-time" and Guthrie reaches for his dagger in return, only to have the blade be redirected by the bugger's claw and he cuts himself [7 points of damage]. A critical failure in self-defense for sure. As most of the group begins to engage in combat, Damien is still looking at the inside of the jars. Inside one of the jars, the one which had his jacket hung over, is water. Damien puts his hand inside the water and now that he has touched it he can see, that water is not clear, but instead of a red-ish colour. "Okay, I taste it!" - Damien decides to see what the liquid tastes like and the salty iron taste of blood sure lingers within. It now finally dawns on Damien, that he is probably in the exact same dungeon and place as he woke up in before and he begins to grab some paper and a pen and draws maps for himself and his companions. Damien manages to recall the layout of the floors the group has explored before and with ease he manages to just nail the exact proportions of the rooms towards each other. He marks Monster positions without much effort, it feels almost like fate is guiding him in this quest.
Tumblr media
Before he leaves the area, he decides to leave a message in the cell he woke up in using illusionary script. "Hello, it's not very nice to take people's things without their consent." He writes the message in abyssal, common and dragonic.
Lastly he ponders, if the water with the blood in the jar is his own.
Audio Transcript: Sierra: What if... what if the blood in the jar was your blood. Because they washed it. They washed your jacket..?" Guthrie: "how would you know it's your blood? Jack: "Do you want me to do a history check to make sure it's my blood? Even though it tried to poison me. Can I do a history check to see if the blood in the pot is mine?" Siri "Maybe more like.. a medicine check?" Jack: "Uuh okay... Medicine check... uuh" Siri: "Like.. Like.. you're not gonne be like "I remember reading a book and that's why I can identify my own blood now." - laughter - Jack: "Well.. Damien KNOWS a lot of random facts, maybe it can be like "Ah yes, by Taste alone I know this is MY blood-" Siri: "BY READING A BOOK?! Or like being like "My grandma once told me a story once that my blood is red and therefore i can TELL- if like.. WHAT THE FUCK" Jack: "Okay I'll do a Medicine check... which has... Minus 1." Lorem employs the revolutionary technique of kebab-ing the skullbugs with her spear.
---
Once reunited, suspicion lies in the air. Damien's reluctance to join the combat and quite baffoonish decision to poke the mimic, leads Lorem, Lyr and Guthrie to not quite trust the young man. Damien realises this distrust and keeps a bit of a distance of the group for now, in the meantime they all discuss what tools and weapons each of them has at their disposal. Introductions are finally made, names are exchanged. As the group gives the prison floor another thorough look, they discover a box filled with bottles of high percentage alcohol. With the intention to take on the next floor in a more structured method than they have done before, the group resorts to the only possible decision for combat in a space without windows. ARSON!
Original post + video/animation by @guthrie-odonto https://www.tumblr.com/the-infinite-dungeon/713607029557723136?source=share The players manage to surprise their enemies. Damien manages to use a hidden entrance to the upper floor, located in the fifth, but seemingly empty cell. He creates an illusiory sound to distract the skullbugs in the room and also attract them to gather around in a similar area. Guthrie uses the moment won by the distraction and emerges with high velocity from the stairway, throwing one of the newly created Molotov Cocktails at the foes. All of the enemies take some proper damage and the furniture surrounding the skullbugs also begins to catch fire. The group manages to defeat the skullbugs and begins to investigate the rest of the floor. They discover in the room connected to the one with the skullbugs a tiny window with iron bars. Outside they locate something that looks like a bright red orb, sitting on an island in a small pond. As they are stuck with no way to advance, they decide to shoot an arrow at the orb, Guthrie hits it with ease and steady aim. A mechanism activates and a secret area is revealed. A new set of stairs is shown to lead to the next layer. The group ponders wether they should immediately advance or not, but the smoke caused by the burning furniture, which is still on fire, even after the fight ended, makes the decision easy for them.
youtube
They find themselves now seperated, each on their own plattform with a large colorful rock behind them. When they look their left and right, they see the room's plattforms repeat in infinite. Once Lyr tried to inspect the pillar behind her, she accidentally causes it to crumble and a rock falls on her head. Luckily, she does not fall into the void and takes no major damage. Damien grows impatient and also curious of this new environment. He throws a knife across the gap to the platform closest to his own. The knife lands safe and sound. Without further hesitation he decides to make a jump for it. As he jumps, the space between the platforms seems to stretch and expand for him. His companions see him slow down mid air, as if an unnatural force is preventing him to reach the other side. Lorem reaches out in desperation to cast levitate on Damien, but the spell does not reach him and he sinks into the depp dark void. ------- Four people wake up in a cell to their own. Guthrie escapes his new prison, not without finding a note that reads "Hello, it's not very nice to take people's things without their consent." He discovers a secret small tunnel, through which he squeezes and discovers Lorem. Together they escape the cell and track down Lyr, who has escaped her own prison with the power of violence. Practise pays off and she not just unlocked, but completely shattered the lock of her cell, upset by the forced reset. Skullbugs are beaten, but no trace of Damien. As the three wander the corridors they hear angry screams echo through the tunnels. + Guthrie is pretty sure the screams do not belong to a person, nor do they sound human, but Lyr and Lorem insist they must belong to Damien. Sure enough, they reunite with Damien, but it takes some proper convincing to get him to leave his cell. The group makes their way to take out the skullbugs on the upper level once more.. The furniture from before is still scorched from the flames of the previous attempt. The fight seems to take forever this time, Damien tries to avoid being hit or taken out at all cost, but his reluctance to engage in combat causes the skullbugs to respawn over and over again after each round of combat. Eventually, the group finally manages to take them out in one round and is finally left alone in this layer of the dungeon. Damien has started raiding the cupboards and unearthes some drinks and cups. The group decides, despite not feeling hungry or thirsty, to take a break to re-assess the situation. Damien also takes some silver spoons. As he inspects them to evaluate the spoon's actual value, he notices that they are somewhat off. "They are as if Ai is trying to render Hands correctly. Sometimes they have small holes or unexpected twists, but from afar, they can be seen as spoons."
Before the group settles down- In the far off corner of the adjacent room to the one they are in, Lorem checks if there are any skullbugs left to defeat. Lorem only finds a pile of bones, one similar to the ones in the layer below where one of the skullbugs has always been hiding. But there is no skull this time. No bug to be found... Sierra (thoughtful): "That's really weird..." Siri (cheerful): "Yeah it is, isn't it?" Sierra (whispering): "What the fuck?" As the characters sit down, Guthrie shows off his cool stone of good luck which has not had much of any effect so far in this weird adventure. Damien curiously inspects it. "Yeah uh, you gotta shine this, for it to work." The characters realise they are truly stuck with each other, but also, in an odd way, they don't mind the company as much as they mind the location they are trapped in.

Love Is Where All Of Us Belong
A GentleBeard Mix
Spotify and YouTube versions!
Inspired by Stede Bonnet and Edward Teach, and the music of Our Flag Means Death
31 songs, 1hr 48mins without ads
I finished this playlist last year, and decided to share it as we await season 2!
An asterisk indicates a song is from the original soundtrack. These songs form our core sound for this mix. My usual ship mixes tend to be a touch… chaotic. But I wanted this one to feel seamless with the established sound of the series. Now let’s set sail on the seas of love!
“I suppose if you found the absolutely two perfect people... then they could potentially... Co-captain?” ~ Stede Bonnet
*A Pirate’s Life – Joel Fry ‘Oh, a pirate’s life sounds just right. Sounds quite nice.’ I had to include Frenchie’s little ditty about pirating as our opener.
Lost Coastlines – Okkervil River ‘The ship's deck now sags from the weight of our tracks. As we pace beneath flags black and battered.’ I kinda stumbled across this one by accident. But it has a great ‘setting off on an adventure’ sound to it that I really like, and it goes well with our sound and lyrical imagery.
*Miles From Nowhere – Yusuf/Cat Stevens 'Cause I know when I find it, my honey. It's gonna make me feel good.’ Probably one of my favorite songs from the soundtrack. Working on this mix I have discovered I really love our boy, Cat Stevens. Expect to hear more from him in the near future.
Soul of the Sea – Heart ‘You dreamer in the sand. Just lie there laughing ‘til the fall.’ When I saw Heart had a song on the Dreamboat Annie album called Soul of the Sea I was like, “Oh, this is gonna be good.” And I was not wrong. I love the ocean sounds on the track, and the theme of casting your sorrows to the sea.
The Sundown – Ennio Morricone Since Il Triello was on the original soundtrack, we had to have some Morricone up in here. I love the calm before the storm feeling this song has.
*The Empty Boat – Caetano Veloso This one is just a vibe, and a really important song for sound in this mix. The guitar, the maracas, the uneasy feeling of the discordant instruments that builds up to that jazzy vibe. Perfection.
*Perfect Day – Lou Reed ‘You made me forget myself. I thought I was someone else. Someone good.’ This song really has that happy lyrics/sad feeling vibe that is very disconcerting to listen to. The part of the show where it plays is just SO SAD, and I think the highlighted lyric really hits how Ed’s relationship with Stede makes him feel like a better person than he thinks he is.
“This is who I am, Stede. Can you see me now? You were always gonna realize what I am." ~ Edward Teach
Trouble – Yusuf/Cat Stevens ‘I've seen your eyes. And I can see death's disguise. Hangin' on me.’ The concept of ‘death’s disguise’ and how it relates to Ed’s Blackbeard persona, and by extension the Kraken, really hit the spot for me. Plus this song just has a ‘beat up by life’ vibe that is great.
*Locomotive Breath – Jethro Tull ‘No way to slow down.’ What is it about Locomotive Breath that makes it sound like a self-destructive spiral?
Love Calls You by Your Name – Leonard Cohen ‘Your body lost in legend. The beast so very tame. But here, right here. Between the birthmark and the stain. Between the ocean and your open vein... Love calls you by your name’ The guitar work that Leonard is doing on this album is impeccable. I’m too emotionally scarred by Avalanche to include it on this mix, but I had to include something from Songs of Love and Hate on here.
Beacon Hill – Damien Jurado ‘And if you return to me, oh, if you return to me. It's all right, baby.’ This song captures the feeling of wanting someone to come home, but knowing they won’t be the same that feels very appropriate for this ship.
String Reprise/Treaty – Leonard Cohen ‘I wish there was a treaty. Between your love and mine.’ Did someone order a plate of forgiveness and reconciliation?
Pastoral II – Moondog I discovered that Moondog is primarily a composer, and the album that High on a Rocky Ledge is from is one of his few lyrical ventures. I love how soft this piece is; it gives me big Stede vibes.
“How does it feel to be in love?” “It feels... easy? It's just like breathing... I hope you find that.” “I think I have.” “Really? What's her name?” “Ed. His name is Ed.” ~ Stede and Mary Bonnet
Throw Me Now Your Arms –Damien Jurado ‘Let me be the one at day's end. Who you can depend on, hand in hand.’ I don’t think I have the words to fully express how much I love this song and how much it had to be here. The imagery in the lyrics is just so spot on.
*High on a Rocky Ledge – Moondog ‘If you've the yen to pluck, then pluck us both. For we who have lived as one wish to die as one.’ This song has such a lovely, soft, fairytale-esque vibe. Also, the lyrics about sacrificing yourself to be with the one you love turn out to be super relevant to our pairing.
Time Has Told Me – Nick Drake ‘And time will tell you. To stay by my side. To keep on trying. 'Til there's no more to hide.’ Nick Drake is another one of my happy discoveries while building this mix. His voice, and the guitar, is just so good.
*The Chain – Fleetwood Mac ‘And if you don't love me now. You will never love me again.’ The almighty. The holy of holies. The song which 80% of the fanfiction for this series draws its titles from. One of unquestionably the best sequences in show, and an all-around banger.
Wild World – Yusuf/Cat Stevens ‘If you gotta leave take good care. Hope you have a lot of nice things to wear. Then a lot of nice things turn bad out there.’ This song is SO SASSY. It reminds me of all the shit everyone gives Stede about not being realistic or prepared to be a pirate. I love the dig about ‘nice things to wear’, especially for our clothes horse Captain Bonnet.
Hey, That’s No Way to Say Goodbye – Leonard Cohen ‘I'm not looking for another as I wander in my time.’ ‘You know my love goes with you as your love stays with me. It's just the way it changes, like the shoreline and the sea.’ I can’t begin to describe to absolute hair-pulling experience it was looking for something soft and romantic in Leonard Cohen’s discography. But Hey, That’s No Way to Say Goodbye came through in a BIG way.
(Love Me Like Music) I’ll Be Your Song – Heart ‘Can you feel the light shine. You know this song's yours and mine.’ Sometimes when life gets hard, you gotta reconnect with that loving feeling.
Take A Chance On Me – ABBA ‘Let me tell you now. My love is strong enough to last when things are rough. It's magic.’ I don’t know if it’s the lasting impact of Mamma Mia on my psyche, but ABBA is perfect on any ship mix. Whatever the vibe is, they have you covered. And Take A Chance On Me is the perfect ‘take me back, we belong together’ song.
"There. Look at that. You wear fine things well." ~ Stede Bonnet
Gnossienne No. 5 (Arr. For Guitar) – Erik Satie, Sebastian Llinares Known in the fandom as the ‘Fine Things Motif’, this piece plays during Ed and Stede’s romantic moments together. I was VERY excited to find this guitar arrangement since it plays so nicely with the rest of the music on this mix.
Don’t Be Shy – Yusuf/Cat Stevens ‘Love is better than a song. Love is where all of us belong.’ Ah, the namesake for this playlist. This is one of my corner-stone, cannot live without songs on this playlist. It’s so soft and perfect.
This Magic Moment – Lou Reed ‘And then it happened. It took me by surprise. I knew that you felt it too. By the look in your eyes’ Is that sexual tension? In my playlist? *gasp*
“These past few weeks have been the most fun I've had in ages, years, maybe ever. So, I reckon what makes Ed happy is... you.” ~ Edward Teach
Everywhere – Fleetwood Mac ‘Something's happening. Happening to me. My friends say I'm acting peculiarly.’ ‘I want to be with you everywhere.’ The song that started us down this road. I was listening to Fleetwood Mac, trying to un-stick The Chain from my brain, when this came on and I went, “What if I made a ship mix?” And here we are.
Dreamboat Annie (Fantasy Child) – Heart ‘Little ship of dreams.’ It’s silly but this just always makes me think of the Revenge sailing off into the sunset.
Reasons For Waiting – Jethro Tull ‘Came a thousand miles. Just to catch you while you're smiling.’ You know, when Jethro Tull can chill with the flute just a little, they can make some pretty freaking beautiful music. This song has big, sexy energy to me. Making out in the afternoon sun. Just warm and tingly and lovely.
*Our Prayer – The Beach Boys I’ll let you decide what I was thinking when I put this song here…
The Air That I Breathe – The Hollies ‘If I could make a wish. I think I'd pass.’ If this isn’t soft, sweet, love-making music, then I don’t know what is honestly. It just has that post-coital bliss sound to it. Plus, if that highlighted lyric doesn’t scream pure contentment, what does?
When All Is Said and Done – ABBA ‘It's so strange when you're down and lying on the floor. How you rise, shake your head, get up and ask for more.’ I was so excited to discover that this was originally a fast-paced song. It’s SO MUCH BETTER than the slowed down version they have in Mamma Mia. I thought it’d be nice to come towards a close with a song about looking back on adventures with the ones we love, and looking forward to what’s to come.
Candle On The Water – Okkervil River ‘Look for me, reaching out to show. As sure as rivers flow. I'll never let you go.’ Is it one of my playlists without an end credit song? I should think not. I had to include Candle On The Water on this playlist; the lighthouse imagery played in too beautifully with Stede and the symbology around his character. And, it would seem I’m totally incapable of making a playlist without at least one Disney song, so this fulfills my quota :’D
Thank you for listening! I hope you’ve enjoyed our musical journey with Blackbeard and the Gentleman Pirate! Until next time!

OMFD FAVE GAME thank you @blakbonnet
Everyone who reads this has to do it now
Fave Ed gif:
Tumblr media
Fave Stede gif:
Tumblr media
I know this gif is shitty as hell but i love this moment so much.
Fave S2 headcanon: Probably Stede changing his name to Thomas Edwards. The comedic possibilities of this.
Fave Stede outfit:
Tumblr media
This one, it's extremely charming. So pink. He wakes up in his pajamas, thinks, let's have a fuckery, dresses up in this just to change clothes again before the fuckery?? Idiot.
Fave Blackbonnet song: I'll go with
But it could be just all of ABBA tbh. Or Dark Red by Steve Lacy.
Fave OFMD Fic Trope: Probably reunion. I also love the fanfics where it's these idiots but it's from Lucius' POV, it can be so funny.
Ed's hair or Stede's hair: Ed's. They're longer and you can do more stuff with them. He looks so beautiful in every haircut too.
Longest you've gone between rewatches: I have no idea, but about 3-4 weeks I believe. I could watch it non stop but also I don't want to overfeed myself.
Hiding in the ship Lucius or ghost Lucius: Since there's no 3rd option I have to go with hiding in the ship Lucius but I've been thinking about ghost Lucius recently ngl
Fave Revange crew member: Frenchie or Jim. Yeah I'll stop at that before I'll name every crew member.

Taro, papyrus, aloe vera!
taro ⇢ if someone called you right now to catch up, what’re the things you’d tell them about?
depends when I talked to them last; new job if I haven't caught them up on that (been about six months), and if it's someone who wasn't caught up on that then probably also gay pirates (and my fic writing if it's someone who I'd be cool talking to about it). otherwise, gardening stuff probably, trip to the renaissance fair a couple of weekends ago, the tattoo I got last month. folks usually want to know how my elderly cat Creamsicle is doing (he continues to just keep going despite everything), I know there are people who would ask how traumaversary season is going (it's fuckin rough tbh). and then my current knitting project, a cute top in a cotton-linen blend, green with kinda turquoise highlights.
papyrus ⇢ if you put your ‘on repeat’ playlist on shuffle, what’s the first song that comes up? what do you like about it / associate it with?
I use Tidal and it doesn't have an "on repeat" feature, but I just hit shuffle on the "July 2022" list and ha, it's High on a Rocky Ledge by Moondog, which HELLO OUR FLAG MEANS DEATH PLAYLIST. It's so strange and melancholy, and ofc I see Stede sitting up at the front of the ship with tears in his eyes murmuring "my family's here at sea now", which ok sure not quite yet bud, but he's got the spirit.
(wow those monthly mixes really are something; you can see from space the switch from March 2022, in which I bounced between three different Mountain Goats albums, to April 2022, at which point it's All Gay Pirates)
aloe vera ⇢ what’s something (mundane) you really want to experience in life?
aw beans, that's a hell of a question to consider while listening to that question, because so many of those things are now tinged with an immense sadness.
I very much want to go out into "my" (to be fair probably this rental duplex's) garden and be able to pick an entire bouquet of flowers and put them in a vase on my dining room table. There aren't a lot of flowers in the yard here, mostly big established shrubs (and an ENORMOUS cedar tree in the back) and other non-flowering plants, and I want to be here long enough to plant lots of flowers that will come up from spring through fall. I did plant bulbs last fall and got some lovely tulips and daffodils in the spring, plus a few lilies, but the squirrels got a lot of the bulbs!

I've been meaning to sit down and write out all of my thoughts on "High on a Rocky Ledge" because that song does something to me and every time I listen to it my brain is like !!!!! and I grin hopelessly.
I totally get why this song isn't a Big Deal in the fandom, because it's used before Ed comes on the scene at all. But I'm going to ramble on now about why it affects me so much, because I keep thinking up these points and not jotting them down.
So the context where it's used in the first episode, when Stede is reading to the crew. It sounds a lot like a lullaby, positioning him as their father (along with the fact that he's ... reading a child's story to the crew), for all those found-family feels.
He's also dressed in blue and in bluish moonlight which just makes for an excellent image.
Moondog sounds like some kind of traveling pre-modern singer who travels from village to village, and we all (we are peasants in this scenario) gather around him at the fire at night and listen to him sing his strange stories. This one has an otherworldly edge to it, there is a truth behind it that we can't quite reach.
The tune is quite lonely. Stede has always been lonely. He's definitely a lot less lonely with his crew, who are finally on his side at this point in the episode, but he's still alone. He doesn't really have a second-in-command the way (we will find out) that Ed does.
He doesn't even know that he has a SOULMATE out there, just waiting for him to come along! He thinks he's about as happy as he'll ever be - away from his marriage and boring life, on a ship with a crew that finally seems to accept him. He doesn't know what we know!!
The song itself! Man!
High on a rocky ledge lives a Mädel Edelweiß Shy as a shadow, lovely as lace, and cold as ice High on a rocky ledge, I pledge my love to her Ev'ry time I climb up to Paradise
How many times I've been up to see her, goodness knows Huffing and puffing, dressed in the warmest climbing clothes How many chances would be taken in my Hopeless pursuit of the Schnee Mädel Edelweiß
Then spoke a spirit, "If you would win your lady love There's only one way: fall to your death from high above You will begin to grow in snow beside the one You have waited for to be mated with"
Now, I'm an Edel vice to my Mädel Edelweiß Dying to be with her wasn't any sacrifice We're so deliriously happy on our ledge Where I pledge my love to my Lady Fair
You who are climbing breathless to see me and my love Snow flowers growing fonder on Lover's Ledge above If you've the yen to pluck, then pluck us both For we who have lived as one wish to die as one
So like it's all about a love that's hopeless on the face of it - a man is in love with a flower. He wants to be with the flower but he's a human and she's a flower so it won't work. Some kind of magical being tells him that if he falls off the mountain, he'll be reincarnated as a flower as well, so he does it and it works. That's DARK and weird.
It parallels himself and Ed, who are born to such extremely different positions that they might as well be a human and a flower.
In some ways, Stede is the narrator of the song - he has to die in order to be with the one he loves. This happens multiple times: he's said to have died when he leaves his family to be a pirate (a transformation), he gets stabbed and hanged and nearly dies of the fever as well at the time of his meeting Ed (very liminal), he fakes his own death to be said to have died more truthfully and get closure so that he can be fully with Ed.
At the same time, Stede is the flower. Stede loves flowers (and he has been treated like shit his whole life for it); he's picking flowers in the flashback where he's tied to the oars of a rowboat. He is definitely a figure of beauty to Ed, and kind of a damsel in distress - this guy who doesn't know what the hell he's doing as a pirate, who needs to be rescued from himself. (And "lovely as lace", something definitely associated with Stede.)
And that ending: "If you've the yen to pluck, then pluck us both / For we who have lived as one wish to die as one." Hooooooo. A definite parallel to the ending of the season - Ed tying himself to Stede rather than allowing him to be killed.

Songs for the Gentleman Pirate: An OUR FLAG MEANS DEATH Mock Musical
A “mock musical”: Some classic sounds of the Caribbean and environs, a touch of folk, and a few showtunes broadly evoking the storyline of the new show from David Jenkins.

WARNING : I'm just an addict ... addicted to music. There are people who are born to make music, o8 thers are born to hearing. Whenever was part of this second group. Maybe it's. a habit, I gotta use, even if it 's rock, jazz or the quiet storm. Great pictures of the things I love - music, painting, books, photography, architecture, design, women, and more. I love music more than lasagna. Better to burn out than fade away. The older you get, the better life gets. But time also seems to be accelerating, the clock running too fast. So, looking at those early days, everything is very slow, stretched, and great significance. The most recent time, I spent busy with simple things.People think rock and roll is only about teenage rebellion, but why can not exist old rebel too? Playing with a moon dog.  A moon dog, moondog, or mock moon, (scientific name paraselene, plural paraselenae, meaning "beside the moon") is a relatively rare bright circular spot on a lunar halo caused by the refraction of moonlight by hexagonal-plate-shaped ice crystals in cirrus or cirrostratus clouds.
I was shooting these on a moving cruise ship, the waves are the wake.  Different colors are different white balances.  The white moon was the true color, but I like to play around at times...

07•13•20 - Floriday Day SIX
If there was ever a perfect day, this was it.
Started off with a fun little prank on Beach hahaha. Her biggest pet peeve is when a company lists one price online and then ends up charging way more when you go to book or buy something. Our idea was to rent bikes for the day, and bike place to place around cute little Key West. Beach found a rental company that advertised bikes for $10 a day. I texted them to find out if there were any available, and they confirmed that there were and that they'd be $11 a day after tax. I told Beach, just for kicks, that she had asked for $50 a day. Maddie was in on the joke and we enjoyed watching Beach spiral into a rage over the alleged false advertising hahah.
But really, the bikes worked out great. We drove down to the shop to pick them up, and they let us leave the car there for the day. It's a little hard to navigate using a GPS while riding a bike, but it was so fun, and so much easier than always looking for parking! Our first stop was Moondog Cafe for breakfast - another little local spot recommended online. There wasn't any seating available indoors at the moment, but we enjoyed sitting outside - even in the heat. Good food, too!
Moondog happened to be right next door to the Ernest Hemingway Home/museum, so we walked over there afterward. All we really knew about it was that it was the home of Ernest Hemingway, but we soon learned that it is also the home to 60 cats! Hemingway had a fascination with six-toed (polydactyl) cats. He was a fisherman, and six-toed cats were considered lucky. If you had one on-board your ship, you wouldn't have any problems with rodents because they were better than average hunters. He started with one (Snow Ball) at the home, and she was bred, and over the years there are now 60 cats there - most direct descendants of Snow Ball. They're not all six-toed, but a lot of them are.
Because of coronavirus, tour group sizes were a lot smaller than normal, so we had to wait outside for over half an hour to get in - and it was freaking hot. But it was worth it to go on the tour. We learned a lot about Hemingway - including that he was also a prize-winning journalist, and that he cheated on three of his four wives. My favorite wife was the second one. Her uncle owned the property in Key West where they renovated the home (where it stands today). Hemingway was out abroad, and word got back to his wife that he was having an affair. She went to their bank account and took out $20,000 (a ton of money back in the early 1900's - three times the cost of their home) and used it to pay for the first in-ground residential swimming pool in Key West - still the largest today! When Hemingway returned and saw what she had done, he pulled a penny out of his pocket, threw it to the ground, and exclaimed that she'd spent his last cent. The penny happened to land in the newly poured patio concrete, and it is still there today. She said he may have had four wives in his lifetime, but she was the only one to spend his last cent.
Betty the cat led us on our tour from room to room. It is very well-preserved and has many artistic touches. It was a cute house and we learned a lot. We met many, many cats - most named after celebrities, and got to pet as many as didn't run away. Fun to see their six toes! After the tour was over, we went into the gift shop which was also filled with cats - we were shocked to see some sprawled across the store shelves! They come and go as they please - it's really something to be seen, and not all that great for my allergies hahaha.
Beach and I both bought a Hemingway book and made a pact to read them - in hopes of being inspired by having been at the property and becoming more cultured and well-read. We'll see if it actually happens.... Mine's called To Have and Have Not.
Next, we rode our little bikes over to the Southernmost Point of the Continental USA. (I'm not really sure how it counts a continental, given that it's an island, but we'll go with it.) We waited in line to get a picture with it, and we'd do it again because that's just who we are haha.
At this point, we were so hot, and just wanted a drink and a swim. We had originally planned to go to Smather's Beach - the biggest in Key West. But the guide at the Hemingway House had recommended Fort Zachary beach as the nicest in the area, so we went there instead. I regret that decision now, because Fort Zachary's sand was nothing but rocks. It wasn't great at all. But the water was so nice, and we swam out to play on the big stacks of boulders in the ocean. The water was so clear we could see the fish swimming all around us. We got ice waters and smoothies, and took pictures of our newly purchased matching anklets. (I try to get an anklet on every beach trip - they're my favorite.)
Next on the list was a stop at Key Lime Pie Co. for world famous Key Lime Pie! Key West is actually the birthplace of Key Lime pie and there's key lime flavored just about everything. But Key Lime Pie Co. was supposedly the place to go. We biked down there, in the busy area of town, only to find that they close early these days because of COVID. So we missed it.
We went to another nearby Key Lime shop and got a slice of Key Lime pie and Key Lime cheesecake, but it tasted totally rotten and spoiled, and GAG. Total bust, do not recommend. If this happens to you, just wait to go to the real place the next day.
Then we went over to Ron Jon Surf Shop - one of 13 stores they have. I'm obsessed with Surf Shops (i.e. my love for Billabong while we were in Australia), and this one was the cutest. I got a cute little hoodie, but they were out of the matching shorts in my size. Crushed me, because I desperately wanted the whole set. The whole store smelled amazing and they just had so much cute stuff - it was a good shopping time.
We did some browsing of souvenir shops on their iconic Duval Street, and then ate dinner at a great little Mexican place - because I love some quality Mexican!
It really was the best island-style living day.
Then it was time to go home and get ready for my FAVORITE day of the year!!!

[Work in progress, already completely written, updated twice a week (on Fridays and Tuesdays)]
Return to the Sea by @casanddeanwinchester
Swimming too far is dangerous, despite being one of the royal families, one of those who governed the ocean, his home as a whole, the ocean itself, wasn’t safe. Some places were more dangerous than the land. The land. The land was off-limit. It was forbidden to go up to the dry soil. The land is dry and desolate. Was written everywhere. Men are creatures of wrath and envy and greed. Of hate and hypocrisy. Mankind is dangerous. They’re killers who kill for pleasure. Who take pleasure in polluting their given land. They live in so much filth, they started using the waters as a place for their waste.
But Castiel is curious. He wants to see.
There’s nothing he wants more than be up there, to feel it with all his senses, to see if the stories are all true… He didn’t know what to expect, but what happened, was certainly not even on the list.
Teen and Up. 1.4k words. (WIP)
[angels are merpeople, merman!Cas, slow updates, minor background relationships]
A Priori by @whelvenwings and @thebloggerbloggerfun
Dean Winchester and Castiel Novak are headed to Hogwarts.
Castiel, as a member of the old Novak wizarding family, is fully expected to be sorted into Ravenclaw, like all of his ancestors before him. Dean, as a Muggle-born, has no idea what the Houses even are. With a surprise sorting and classes starting soon afterwards, they’re both pitched headfirst into the unknown - and they find themselves in competition with each other almost at once, both of them needing to prove themselves to the people they left at home, and the people with them at Hogwarts.
Over the course of their seven years at Hogwarts, Dean and Cas learn what it means to prove yourself, what it takes to discover who you are, what it feels like to fall in love, and what it is they’ll fight for - what matters most of all.
General Audiences. 146k words. (WIP)
[Hogwarts AU, Enemies to Friends to Lovers, Slow Burn]
Borrowing Sugar by @blissfulcastiel
It’s the moment every neighbor should have - the ‘Borrow Sugar’ moment. Dean would very much like to have that moment with his new neighbor, Castiel - if only he could ever get up to even speak a full sentence without freezing up and fleeing the scene. He just didn’t picture it playing out the way it actually did.
Explicit. 52k words. (WIP)
[mechanic!Dean, phone sex operator!Cas, artist!Cas, neighbors, phone sex, mutual pining]
Warning Siren by @osirisapollo
For Dean Winchester, it’s hard being stuck in the closet. Especially when he didn’t even know he was there in the first place. It gets a lot harder when his new neighbor seems determined to be in there with him. Literally.
Castiel is scared of tornados, and asks if he can take refuge in Dean’s closet during the storms. Of course, Dean can’t say no to that.
Explicit. 37k words. (WIP)
[Neighbors AU, College students, Brother feels, Everyone ships it, Sexual exploration, Texas, Tornados, Slow burn, FLUFF]
The Interview by @spearywritesstuff
It begins at an award show. Dean Winchester is a well-known actor, standing before a crowd with Charlie at his side. The world looks at him and sees someone that has everything. The fame, the fortune, the life. They don’t see the loss or what he refuses to tell. Then Charlie, his manager, sets up an interview with a journalist that seems to know how to get at the truth. It seems to take no time before Dean is sharing more than he intended, and Benny is ready to capture it all on camera. Because some stories just must be told.
Mature. 69k words. (Complete)
[MCD, Suicidal Thoughts, Heavy Angst, Slow Build, AU: 1980s]
The Unclean by @jellyfishfresh
Dean should know by now to expect the worst when his brother calls him in the middle of the night with words like, we have a situation on his tongue. Still, he’s more than a little surprised when Sam asks him to take in a young man recently rescued from a cult. Castiel - malnourished, abused, and afraid - might be more than Dean can handle, but someone’s got to do it. Dean searches and finds a bright, loving man buried under those years of abuse, and he’ll do just about anything to help Castiel feel whole again.
Mature. 53.8k words. (Complete)
[Alternate Universe, fluff, past abuse, healing, slow burn]
What is Hidden, What is Seen by @expatgirl
The Darkness has descended, and Castiel must make a choice. What, in reality, is the nature of Free Will, and where does love end and self-effacement begin? And why didn’t Castiel know about the Mark of Cain and its relation to The Darkness in the first place?
Mature. 83k words. (Complete)
[Post Mark of Cain, Break up, Reconciliation, Angst with a Happy Ending]
Warnings: Canon typical violence, mentions of suicide
 Welcome All Winchesters by @almaasi
When Dean’s engagement breaks off three days before Christmas, he’s left with nobody to accompany him on a road trip to his family’s mountain log cabin. His best friend Castiel happens to be available, and is willing to help him through a tough time. But when Dean’s mother and brother arrive, expecting to meet the person Dean plans to marry, they understandably assume Castiel is Dean’s fiancé. After a weekend of comfortable domesticity, sharing clothes, intimate conversations, and definitely-one-time-only therapy sex, it feels almost too easy for Dean and Cas to fake a loving, romantic relationship. The hard part is going back to being friends afterwards. They can’t keep their hands off each other, and they’ve discovered some fun things to do together which they’d never tell another soul about. And, oh boy, feelings. Now being ‘just friends’ is so impossible, it seems as if fate had another plan for them all along…
