4, 16, 17, and 19 for the ask game!
4: An underrated gem I really enjoy this manga called Dance, Subaru by Masahito Soda. It has a very engaging intensity to it! It's a ballet manga, and I often think of it as a better version of the movie, Black Swan. It ran in a Seinen Magazine but it has a very shoujo sensibility. I just wish the artist's other work was as good. (Also, the sequel manga is eh.) 16: A manga that disappointed you I was really disappointed by the manga, Innocent by Shin-ichi Sakamoto. It's all style, no substance. I found myself very frustrated over that, I've just read so many things that tackles it's themes better. The art is gorgeous though. 17: A manga you didn't expect to like Black Jack by Osamu Tezuka. I think I've always kinda dismissed Tezuka as writing things I wouldn't be interested in. I was dead wrong. I think hearing his name so much must have gotten on my nerves. Since I had a copy of the first volume of Black Jack laying around my parent's house, I ended up cracking it open out of boredom. It was really fun, and I really love Tezuka's art. Don't be a hipster, guys. 19: Highlights of the Year I think becoming more familiar with y24 artist, Toshie Kihara has been a real eye-opener. First, I found out that she wrote a proto-Mari and Shingo called Ara Waga Tono. This was written in 1973 I believe, and it broke my mind because Mari being in love with Shingo is treated as a serious plot-point (he even steals a kiss, though he isn't the main love interest in that version of the story ;_;). Mari and Shingo itself is pretty groundbreaking and I also had the pleasure of reading that.
In other news, my senior thesis which has been taking an awful lot of my time is about the influences on western pop music on the proto-bl movement. And a real highlight of my research was finding out that western pop music actually didn't make much of a splash in the Japanese market, and was kind of a niche interest. This was surprising to me since a lot of proto-bl artists, namely Akimi Yoshida and Yasuko Aoike seem so enamored with western music artists. There also seemed to be an subsect of early fujos obsessed with David Bowie. I think it's interesting that the two subcultures interacted with each other in this way.

Unlock Japan's CUBE Remake on SCREAMBOX on April 11
youtube
SCREAMBOX will stream Cube, a Japanese remake of the 1997 Canadian cult classic, on April 11 as a SCREAMBOX Original. It will also be available on VOD platforms the same day via Cinedigm and Bloody Disgusting.
A group of strangers wake up in a mysterious room inscribed with an unfamiliar code. Looking for ways to escape, they discover the room is riddled with lethal traps. As fear and distrust swirl around them, the group must work together to survive the sadistic maze.
Original Cube writer-director Vincenzo Natali serves as executive producer on the fresh take on his clever sci-fi horror concept. Yasuhiko Shimizu directs from a script by Kôji Tokuo. Akiko Funatsu (Ichi the Killer) and Satoko Ishida produce.
Masaki Suda (Kamen Rider W), Anne Watanabe (Miss Hokusai), Masaki Okada (Drive My Car), Takumi Saitoh (Shin Godzilla), Kôtarô Yoshida, and Hikaru Tashiro star in the darker, deadlier exploration of isolation.
"Vincenzo Natali's Cube is a modern cult classic that broke new ground with its unique production design and storytelling," says Brad Miska, Managing Director of Bloody Disgusting. “This new Japanese experience honors the original and delivers the goods horror fans expect to see. Cube enthusiasts are going to want to solve this puzzle.”
Cube joins SCREAMBOX’s growing library of unique horror content, including The Outwaters, Terrifier 2, Living with Chucky, 13 Nights of Elvira, Re-Animator, Sleepaway Camp, Hell House LLC, Pennywise: The Story of IT, and Toxic Crusaders.
Start screaming now with SCREAMBOX on iOS, Android, Prime Video, Roku, YouTube TV, Samsung, Comcast, Cox, and Screambox.com.
