Mankey ~ Aquapolis 92/147 ~ Tomokazu Komiya

If you are looking for some fantastic weird stuff when it comes to pokemon TCG art, Tomokazu Komiya is probably your best bet. They've been creating art for the TCG since the Johto era, and I adore all of his little freaks. If you haven't seen them, please consider looking up the cards he did for the japan exclusive vending machine sets. Absolute masterpieces.

Despite the surreal hallmarks of his style, his history shows a lot of versatility in how he uses his signature techniques. Komiya has also been involved in art for pokemon picture books, as well as some art for the recent Pokemon x Van Gogh collaborations (which I think at this point is more well known for the scalper stampede it caused at the exhibit).

Komiya plays with form and composition in creative ways that makes his reputation as one of the best tcg artists well-earned. It's amazing how he can take what are individually flat looking elements, and combine them to create an image with a ton of visual depth. I can feel the distance it would take to get from the foreground to the background. His art can feel simultaneously angular and aggressive, while retaining a softness and warmth that connects the franchise as a whole. I'd love to make a formal Komiya collection one day.

BEST QUALITY: Extreme being woken up earlier than intended looks. The absolute rage of this sleepy man(key). hashtag relatable.

About This Series of Posts:

This collection started when I wanted to have a set of the original 151 Pokemon. However, getting the cards with their first appearances would cost a lot of money. I decided to make a set of the original 151, made out of my favorites of the cheaper options available (though I did allow myself to splurge a few times on ones I really wanted).

Each post features photos of one page of the collection, an impulsively chosen favorite card of the page, a detail on that card, and general writing on the contents of the photos.
