The Physician and the Rabbit Spirit
and its sequel
so, those two.
by now i'm kind of used to sapphic c-dramas being short, beautiful and having heart-wrenchingly tragic endings (which doesn't stop me from letting the story hypnotize me into dropping my guard every time). but this one... not only it Didn't end with one of the girls dying, it had this scene as the climax of the story:
"The world is a big place. There's bound to be space for the two of us."

Your taste in dramas >>>≥>> Story of ming lan? Yanxi palace? I miss them so much and I'm so sad we're probably never going to get anything like them again with all the bans and regulations. Both leads were so so incredibly clever? And it made sense we weren't told they were smart by people parroting it, we were shown time and time again and it was so satisfying to see two women who were geniuses and proved it, also the depth of the female relationships? Ming lan and her grandma? Ying luo and the empress? 70 episodes of fantastic storytelling and depth of characters and relationships. They ruined me for other shows now everytime I watch a drama where they proclaim the lead is "smart" it's mostly a lot of tell not show and they're not actually that smart and the dramas themselves have mediocre writing with so many plotholes and stupid decisions and actions.
omg, first of all, tysm!! it's so good but hard to find people with a similar taste in dramas 😩 and yes, yanxi and minglan have ruined sooo many dramas for me!! it's a struggle to watch a show and be constantly told how supposedly smart the female lead is when, in actuality, everyone else around them is just dumbed down to make them look better. also, i love how their dramas aren't just centered purely on romance! like you said, the female relationships in this show were SO well-done and a lot of the female characters were given so much depth. rolan genuinely being smart but being held back by her mother's avarice? mingyu starting off as a jealous adversary but then turning into yingluo's fiercest friends? i was so glad to see that these characters weren't just cartoonish villains meant to get in the way of the 'main romance' in the respective shows.
if you want another really complex show with equally complex and multifaceted characters (specifically the female lead) i would really suggest 'the rise of phoenixes' on netflix, starring chen kun and ni ni!! the show is soooo good and really evocative of other things i've watched like 'kingdom' and 'game of thrones'. i would say, though, that the last few episodes kinda ruined it so be wary of that but everything else was FANTASTIC! ning yi (ML) actually has a really engaging personality and feng zhiwei is so intelligent and idealistic, ugh it's so good. i would also reccomend 'monarch industry' on viki because i feel like the characters in that show are also *chef's kiss*
