Leonardo DiCaprio has replaced Robert De Niro as Martin Scorsese's go-to leading man, but he has yet to make his Raging Bull (1980) or Taxi Driver (1976), which many people -- including me -- think of as the peak achievements of both Scorsese and De Niro. But The Wolf of Wall Street comes close to being DiCaprio's GoodFellas (1990). Both movies are based on true stories that illuminate the dark side of American experience: In the case of GoodFellas, the mob, and for Wolf, the unholy pursuit of wealth in the stock market. Both are in large part black comedies, full of sex and drugs, and both end in an inevitable downfall. And both have been criticized for excessively glamorizing the lifestyles of their protagonists. Terence Winter's adaptation of the memoir of Wall Street fraudster Jordan Belfort (DiCaprio) spares no excess in depicting a life corrupted by unchecked greed, and yet neither Winter nor Scorsese seems able to put the course of Belfort's corruption into plausible shape, the way Scorsese and screenwriter Nicholas Pileggi made Henry Hill's rise and fall plausible in GoodFellas. It's a flamboyant film, with entertaining and sometimes frightening performances by DiCaprio, Jonah Hill, Margot Robbie, Matthew McConaughey, Jon Bernthal, and Jean Dujardin, but the film often seems to be carried away with its own determination to get away with as much outrageous behavior and language as possible. I would have welcomed a little less Jordan Belfort and a little more Patrick Denham (Kyle Chandler), who was based on Gregory Coleman, the FBI agent who finally managed to bring Belfort down. But as in GoodFellas, the emphasis is less on the law than on the disorder.

Kindness

Twenty-fourth Sunday in the Season of Creation!

September 16, 2023

"Brothers and sisters: None of us lives for oneself, and no one dies for oneself. For if we live for the Lord, and if we die, we die for the  Lord; so whether we live or die we are the Lord's. For this is why Christ died and came to life, that he might be Lord of both  the dead and the living. Romans 14:7-9.

John Shea once wrote that "the heavenly banquet table is open to everyone who is willing to sit down with everyone." A Muslim friend of mind likes to say: "I try to be on good terms with everyone, knowing that I will be spending eternity with them." Both are sound advice.

This last week and a half I been ill, and was in the hospital, and what I remember most were the nurses and doctors: all different ethnicity,  and each shared a different faith. They symbolize for me the words of Reverend Taylor Brown:

"Kindness is not a bad religion, no matter what name you use for God."

I have noticed when ill that nothing really matters accept to be cared for, have a place to live, food, and most of all kindness.  Titles, and everything else do not matter, accept kindness and care.

There are stories in the paper of "moving" homeless individuals out of site, off the main streets because of the Salesforce convention. 

There is a bill proposed by the Mayor to allow "rent control units be torn down," to be replaced with "condos", not under rent control. So where is "kindness" here?

Really what matters to our friends who live on the street is kindness, care, and thoughtfulness.

So as you walk down the street or speak remember to be kind to the homeless, and to everyone.

Tuesday, my friend Michael was kind enough to drive me to  Kaiser for some blood tests, and pick up some medicine; we returned to the Holiday Inn garage; and in my attempt to spend more time with him, bought him some refreshments downstairs.

While sitting, an older man, sit down near us. My eyes were turned towards the window watching traffic, and Michael noticed the gentleman was having difficulty.

The gentleman was drinking, and tipsy, on his arm was a hospital bracelet; his arms and feet were swollen. His left eye was drooping.

Michael talked and listened to him, called the hotel staff, and we offered to call an ambulance, but the gentleman chose to go back to his room with the hotel manager.

Michael showed him so much compassion. As we left and Michael was worrying about what could be done to help the man more I reminded him we gave the gentleman a choice, and basically we did our part--to simply show so much kindness, and let the rest go.

I have learned a long time ago to live in the words of Elizabeth Gilbert:

"You can measure your worth by your dedication to your path, not by your successes or failures."

So in this time of polarization, division, and selfishness join with me in remembering  Dr. Taylor-Brown's words and seek to put them into practice.

"Kindness is not a bad religion, no matter what name you use for God."

El chileno Miguel Castro, con su victoria en lanzamiento del martillo (72.47 m), la costarricense Sharon Herrera en la marcha de 10 mil metros y la jamaiquina Alana Reid, ganadora de los 100 metros llanos, fueron los únicos que pudieron frenar el dominio de Estados Unidos en la primera jornada de competencias del Campeonato Panamericano u20, este viernes 4 de agosto en el Estadio Centroamericano "José Figueroa Freire" de Mayagüez, Puerto Rico. Para los atletas sudamericanos, el éxito de Castro fue relevante, como puntal de la nueva generación surgida de la "factoría" de martilleros de Temuco. En la misma prueba, el argentino Tomás Olivera fue segundo con 71.16 m. En el salto en largo femenino, la brasileña Vanessa Sena dos Santos lideró hasta la última ronda por sus 6.17 m., hasta que allí la norteamericana Avery Lewis consiguió aventajarla por 5 cm. Y otra estadounidense, Morgan Davis, también necesitó de su sexto y último salto (5.99m) para superar por dos cm. a la argentina Victoria Zanolli y llevarse la medalla de bronce.
