Birthday Shots

Part 5

Summary: A flashback to the beginning..now through Fred’s POV.

Notes: Smutty musings… (sorry..Fred is a tad longer and there are two new scenes that deals with him that reader was not aware of)

Wiping down the counter when the phone rang, grumbling Fred answered it. That phone only ran when it was bad fucking news.

Inhaling, exhaling he grabbed the phone. “Hello.”

“Parras?”

“Who the fuck else would it be?”

A chuckle filled his ear. He made a face. “Stop I am in no mood, what do you want?”

“Abbott here.”

Fred rolled his eyes. “Yeah, like I didn’t know.”

“They are closing my VFW down for a short stint for repairs.”

That made annoyance curl fill him. He always got the short end of things. His place had issues with the fucking plumbing along with the electricity, and no one was coming to fix his post. He had fixed it all his damn self. “And why is it of my concern?”

“I have a girl here, her father is a colonel.”

“Good for you. You know I don’t want any distractions here.”

“Look its not our fault that the last woman to work there was that bitch of an ex-wife of yours.”

“Yeah well things have been calm ever since I got rid of her.”

“Bullshit. Anyway, I owe her father alot. So you’re going to take her while things are closed here.”

“I am not. Give her to Johnson.”

“He’s at full staff. Believe me, she is barely looking into her twenties and she not much of a distraction. She’s a good kid.”

He exhaled, pinching his nose. “Good kid?”

“Yeah, like I said her dad is a colonel and all her brothers are enlisted here and there. She has a nice smile. And fuck, I’ll owe you. You name it.”

“My fucking plumbing.” It was all he cared about.

“Fine. Done. After my placed is fixed, I’ll send my best plumber.”

“Sure. Yeah. When is she is fucking coming?”

“Tonight.”

“Fuck. Alright. What’s her name?”

“Y/FN.”

“Ok.”

“Look guys, we have some chick coming to work here for a bit.”

Walter rubbed his hands together. “Is she hot?”

Fred shrugged. “No fucking idea. She’s practically a kid from what Abbott said. Let’s hope I, we don’t have to babysit her.”

Abe, grumbled into his beer. “We’ve had a good thing here. Do I have to be nice?”

Fred eyed his friend. “Be decent. We’re not pigs.” He sat back. He wasn’t exactly thrilled but at least he would get his plumbing fixed.

“Says you.” He chuckled.

The door opened, Fred looked past Abe and there you were. He swallowed, he pulled off his cap.

Would you have a chip on your shoulder, he wondered. So he leaned against his bar, he’d play dumb. His eyes moved over your curves, as you swished up to the bar. Was it already bad that he wanted to lay his hands on those hips of yours and pull you close.

“Hello!” Your voice was crisp and light. “Are you Mr. Parras?”

“Fred.” He looked from side to side. “So you’re Y/FN?”

You nodded. “That’s me.” You smiled, Abbott had been right. It was a nice smile but the rest of you well this was going to be interesting. His mind continued to wander vaguely to what he’d do to you. “Thank you for taking me in.”

Be pushed himself off the counter. “Look, Abbott and I owed each other. Just do as I say, I run a tight ship here.”

He could watch the emotions flood your eyes. You were young. Damn that too. “Ok! I get it. That’s great!”

“Your apron is on the hook through that door.” He pointed to the back door. “Go slip that on and I’ll show you around.”

“Great!” You said still brightly. The door of the backroom nodded. He bit the inside of his cheek as he watched you disappear into the back room.

“Damn Fred, now that is a piece of ass, I may have to dress a little nicer now.” Walter remarked.

He put his cap back on. “What so a clean pair of jeans?”

Walter chuckled.

“Maybe I will wear a new suit.” Piped in Lou.

He rolled his eyes before and leaned against the counter that held the bottles upon bottles of liquior.

Your niceness was bound to wear off, with chicks it usually did. He’d be prepared but at least you were something to look at. There was something classy about how you looked. Damn if he was half his age, he’d still be older then you. Now, he was too damn old.

At least those girls down a few blocks could distract him. Today he’d finally get a slice of Kandi; with you walking around he needed it.

He dragged the metal tub and placed it not far from the picnic table. Opening the freezer, he grabbed two bags of ice then poured them in. The little bbq was taking shape, he’d never admit it but he liked giving them. Going back in he grabbed the twelve pack and the hamburger patties. Kneeling down, he placed the bottles into the ice.

His fence door creaked, looking up he smiled. “Hey Lou, Shelly.” He smiled.

“Hey Fred.”

“Look who we grabbed and brought with us.” Lou, said with a twist of his mouth

Walter sheepishly came walking in.

“Good. Didn’t want to have to go and pick his ass up.” He gestured to the beers. “Make yourself comfortable.”

“Fred, want me to put the salad on the table or the refrigerator?” Shelly, Lou’s wife asked.

“Table is fine. If you want grab some dressings from the fridge.”

He looked up at the sky, it was a good day for the fourth. He ignited the coals, letting burn for a bit he finally placed some patties down. He sighed, as he watched them begin to sizzle.

He probably shouldn’t have invited Kandi, he really didn’t want to see her. But in case his mind wandered, he didn’t want to be caught drooling over you with one of your damn brothers here. God knows, what you’d be wearing.

He was flipping another around of burgers when heard of your arrival before he looked over his shoulder. Lou jumped up and introduced you to his wife.

So he decided to focus on the grill. Hesitantly, he glanced over his shoulder and saw that you were wearing one of those wispy little summer dresses. Damn it. Good thing Kandi would be here

“Fred.” He heard you, it caused a stirring in him. Why couldn’t he just be able to push you away. Something about you prickled his senses. It had only been a short while but you got to him. Yet another part of him was worried what if you just humored him. He was twice your age after-all. “I would like to introduce you to one of my brothers. This is Michael.”

He turned, and he smiled. You looked particularly pretty today, it stole his thoughts away. He was turning into a silly old man. “Michael?” He just couldn’t remember if you said marines or rangers, damn it what was he?You could see him trying to recollect, hav

“Hi sir.” He offered a hand. “I’m the marine.”

“Oh yes! Hi there pal.” He looked over and took his hand, shaking it. “Your baby sister…” He continued but then was cut off.

“Fred, honey I’ve made it.” Howled a woman, carrying a tray of some kind of jello dessert and waving with her free hand.

Inwardly, he turned cold. Did Kandi have to show up right now, he bit the inside of his cheek.

He knew the history she had with his friends. He wasn’t too keen on her, but he didn’t want to look like a fool because of you. As she closed the distance she wrapped an arm around him. Fred tried to maintain his smile.

He grew uncomfortable. Her perfume, made him wrinkle his nose. He didn’t want to be rude but damn, did she already have to try and kiss him. He moved away, there was no way he wanted that bubble gum pink lipstick on his face.

“Hi Kandi!” He managed politely enough as he moved his hand to her behind and gave her a hearty squeeze. He had heard stories from the boys. He tried not to shiver.

“Did you miss me?”

He winked. “Maybe. Anyway, I was talking to Y/N and her brother Michael, he’s a marine.”

“Oh, how rude of me.” She flashed a toothy smile your way. “Hi Y/N, you’re the new girl? Right?”

He smiled but cut in. “She’s the only girl, I allow.”

“I am still upset you won’t let me work at your bar.” Kandi stamped her foot.

“Because you would be too much of a sweet distraction.”

She giggled. “I guess so.”

He had to remember not to roll his eyes.

“See even now, I forgot what I was going to say.” He looked at you, then slid her a look. “You distracted me.”

You shrugged, now you were the one who looked between him and your brother. “Must not be terribly important.”

“I’ll remember.” He scratched the back of his head. “Well, back to grilling. “Burger? Michael, Y/N?”

“Yes, please.” You replied and your brother nodded.

“What about me?” Kandi pouted.

“I know you that you want a chicken patty.”

“Oh, right.” She swished and giggled. “I forgot.”

Glancing, over he saw you sitting off to the side, he had hoped you would have come to get your food. Since you didn’t he’d bring it to you. At least Kandi, gave him a bit of a break and was talking to the girl Abe brought with him.

As he neared, he saw that you were picking at the label. He wished you’d perk up. You had better be later he mused.

“I thought you were going to come back for your burger.”

He couldn’t resist rubbing your bare back. You smelled so good, you were a wonderful mix of perfume and suntan lotion. Everything that was nice about summer. He couldn’t help but chuckle when he saw you jump a little. He placed a plate in front of you.

“Easy.” You were as soft and smooth as he expected. “Didn’t mean to startle you.” A smirk curled his lips.

You closed your eyes and leaned into his touch or was he just imagining it. Just as he had that. thought all hope dashed from him as you sat up straighter. “I forgot.” You said simply.

“With those two beers you can’t, I need you on top of your game tonight baby.”

You appeared to brighten. “I will be.” He liked how your eyes twinkled in the sun.

“Good.” He rubbed your back once more, he needed to feel you again. “Well, I better get back to the bbq.” He headed back to the grill.

“I thought this is what you wanted?” Her perfume was making him ill she rubbed up against him. Nothing about this was arousing.

“It is.” He gruffly said, grabbing Kandi by her hips he removed her from his lap. “Just not from you.”

“Hey…hey.” She wiggled in his grasp.

“Calm down, I’ll still pay.”

She snapped her gum. “You want it from the little chickie don’t you?”

He narrowed his eyes as he looked at her. “What are you talking about?” He reached into his back pocket for his wallet.

“The new girl.”

“No!” Her words hit him like a blow to his stomach.

“Oh so you’re gay then? That’s cool. I have someone for you.”

“No!”

“Oh, so it is her.” A wet chuckle came from Kandi.

“Not a word. I don’t need the fucking headaches.” He handed her the cash, she took it then stuffed it in her bra.

“Fine but you got it bad.” He tapped him on his chest.

“Nah.” He brushed her finger away. “She just has a better ass then you.” He snapped. He didn’t like talking to her about you.

“But I use mine, I’m sure she’ll never use hers.” A wet chuckle came her again.

He was annoyed now, before the night was over, everyone would fucking know. Honestly, he wasn’t sure how he felt about that. He opened the door.

“You don’t have to lie, I saw how you looked at her. We know.” She pulled on her heels and lingered in the door way.

“Whatever. You can leave now.”

“You should tell her. You’d both be happier.”

He gave her a look, she snapped her gum and walked out.

Unscrewing a bottle to pour a round of shots, he noticed that there were no whispers among his friend. Perhaps, Kandi would keep her mouth shut.

Squinting, some light from the outside poured into the bar. As he saw you walk in; he swallowed hard. He didn’t think he could get aroused that fast. Fuck he was no damn teenager.

He would ignore it, he took a shot with the boys.

At one point, you drew close as him. He inhaled deeply of your sweet scent. Just when, he didn’t think it could get better you leaned partially against him. “Happy Fourth of July, Fred this has been spectacular.”

You smiled up at him. Oh, how he wanted to keep you there, maybe even kiss you. You were so wonderfully soft. “Happy Fourth!” He smirked down at you.

Just as he began to enjoy the feel of your body, you fluttered off. Once again like some stupid randy teenager, he was aroused.

Finally, later into the night, well before midnight all of he gathered you all into the parking lot.

You came over and leaned gently against him. “Are those what I think they are?”

“Yup.” He winked at you. “I managed to grab some.” Fred smirked. “Now, everyone stand back.”

He snapped open his lighter and kneeling he quickly lit all the firecrackers. Stepping back fast, they all soon shot into the air and the night sky light up. All sorts of colors and booms filled their ears.

Ooohhhh yesssssssss. It’s funny, I used to hc that Evan and Connor wouldn’t want kids, for various reasons. But then @djbead123 and I started creating AU’s where they had kids and now I can’t imagine them WITHOUT kids.

Also, this request comes at the perfect time because @djbead123 and I were JUST discussing a fun dynamic: MLB!Evan and Roman!Connor/Trans!Connor. So here are my favorites from those hc’s. Enjoy!

-Evan and Connor got married soon after college

-They only want one or two kids, but they’re just seeing where life takes them for now

-About a year and a half into their marriage, Connor thinks he’s pregnant. So he takes a test, it comes out positive, and he’s excited but a little nervous too. He thinks of all the possible ways that Evan can react, either over dramatically or calmly. But when Connor finally DOES gather the courage to tell him, Evan’s reaction is one Connor didn’t expect: Evan starts crying. Connor is shocked and worried and he feels bad, but Evan pulls him into a hug and says “we're gonna be dads!"

-Connor doesn't experience any morning sickness but man is he tired, it's like his baby is draining the life outta him. His pregnancy sucked a little, swollen feet and achy back are a bitch but Evan made things better - he always does

-Evan and Connor‘s first child is a boy they name Alexander. He's perfect. Connor literally smiles so hard at the sight of his newborn, he and Evan love him so much and welcome him into the world with nothing but love

-For two years, it's just them and their son and they couldn't be happier. Alexander is a happy baby and he loves his dads so much.

He looks alot like Evan, dark skin, black hair. He also has Evan's shy personality. Alexander doesn't like strangers all that much. “Same,” Evan says.

-When Alexander is two, Connor is pregnant again. Connor’s nervous but once Evan finds out, he practically lifts Connor off his feet and kisses him. Alexander is walking around and already talks a lot, so he's wondering why Evan is crying. Alexander finds out that he’s gonna be a big brother and the toddler couldn't be happier

-On their son’s second birthday, they have a small party, just the three of them and it’s great. Alexander is happy to just be with his parents. They have a bigger party a few days after but that’s just to keep Connor and Evan's parents happy (because in this future au, Connor and his family have made amends and get along and they’re very much in his life). Alex didn't enjoy it, too many strangers; he hid behind Evan a lot

-Evan loves to feel baby number 2 kick, so he'll often rest his head on connor's tummy. It’s nice and calming. Connor secretly adores this

-Cynthia is a wonderful grandmother to Alexander, she spoils him. Larry takes entire days off sometimes just to take Alex out. They go places, get ice cream, etc. He’s a silly grandpa and Alexander loves him. Larry loves to just sit Alexander on his knee and tell him great stories.

-Heidi loves being a grandma. She still works a lot, so she can’t babysit as often, but she never misses any birthdays or any other special days. She ALWAYS takes off for that stuff so she can be with everyone.

-Evan and Connor’s second baby is a girl. They name her Samantha. She bonds instantly with Connor. She cries when anyone but Connor picks her up, and she’ll only fall asleep if Connor sings her to sleep

-Sammy also loves her Auntie Zoe. And Zoe loves both her niece and nephew. She loves being an aunt.

-Alexander loves being a big brother. He’s very protective of Sammy. If she cries, he’ll yell at his parents until they go to Sammy and make her feel better. They’ve even caught him trying to sleep in her crib

-They end up getting a dog when Sammy is walking. It's a large doggo, a rescue. She's a few years old but she really loves Sammy and Alex

PART II - Butterfly Clips and Wallflowers

Fall 1997

Lacey puckered as she painted her lips with Ravenous Red, pausing as she rubbed them together to survey the job she'd done on her hair in the mirror. A crystal-clear butterfly clip held back a small blonde tress on each side of her head.

Perfect.

"I could have done that for two dollars," she heard Ariel from behind her on the bed. "And I could even have gotten them straight."

Lacey's brow furrowed as she leaned in to examine the clips closer.

"Psych!" Ariel giggled. "They're fine."

Lacey sighed. "I said you could stay in here for ten minutes, Ariel, and they're up. So go find something to do."

"I thought you wanted me to sit here all night and wait til Foolish Games comes on the radio so I could record it on the tape."

"Right." Lacey surveyed herself one more time in the mirror before standing up from her vanity. "And you only get two dollars if I come back and find nothing out of place, you got it?"

Her little sister rolled over onto her back, sighing. "I told you, I don't want any of your stuff. And what time are you coming back?"

Lacey shrugged. "We'll see."

The truth was, her mom had told her to be in by midnight. But she knew her mother would be fast asleep by nine thirty, so what did it matter?

"You're really going to a party at Eden Hall?" another voice cut in from the doorway, a little higher than her sister's.

Halen, the tattle-tail. Hopefully she would be asleep by nine thirty, too.

"Not at Eden Hall, but at the house of an Eden Hall student."

"I thought they lived in dorms," Ariel piped up.

"Not all of them. Some still live with their parents."

"Will there be drinking?" Halen whispered.

"No! Of course not," Lacey lied.

"Are you going with Max?"

"Oh my gosh, guys, the questions! Yes, with Max. Who else?"

"Oh. I just... well, I don't like him," Lacey's little sister wrinkled up her nose. "He never smiles, and never talks to us."

"Plus he always wears those stupid sunglasses in the house," Ariel piped in.

"He's shy," Lacey defended. "Something neither of you guys knows anything about." She made chattering hand gestures at her sisters. "Anyway, it's going to be cool. No drinking, no smoking. But I gotta go."

"You look like a Barbie doll," Halen beamed, following her down the hall.

Lacey smirked. "Make sure Ariel doesn't touch my stuff."

"Of course," Halen stared after Lacey as she opened and shut the front door quickly.

There was no point bothering Stuart and Mom with goodnights. It would just waylay her, and she already felt irritable from the butterflies in her stomach.

Getting invited to parties was nothing new to Lacey, but the illustrious Eden Hall invitation certainly was. You weren't invited to their parties unless you really were someone, or were dating someone. In Lacey's case, as high on the social ladder as she'd climbed since middle school, she still might have never been invited to an Eden Hall party were it not for dating Max.

As much as Lacey hated to admit it, the twins were right about her boyfriend. He wasn't terribly endearing, sometimes not even to her. But he was hot and they had fun. Wasn't that what it was about when you were in high school?

Max played hockey for the Richard Mills High School Rockets -- the precinct's leading varsity team, bested only by Eden Hall's Mighty Ducks. Max's ego typically kept him away from parties at the esteemed private school, but he'd finally accepted an invitation. Who knew for what reason. Lacey only hoped he wouldn't get drunk and start trouble with any of the rival hockey players who happened across him.

Just as Lacey shut the door behind her, Max peeled around the curb and came to an abrupt halt in front of her house. Lacey walked as quickly as platform heels in grass would allow, but stopped short just before jumping in the passenger side.

Under the streetlight, she got a good look at the car he was driving -- a 1975 Lincoln Continental. It was all she could do to keep from clenching her fists to feel her nails digging into her palms.

"What?!" Max huffed. "Not like I wanted to drive my brother's junker tonight. Especially around all those rich pansies, but I need a new transmission. If you don't wanna be seen in it, then--"

"No... Max, it's fine," Lacey forced herself beyond the moment, reminding herself to breathe. "I thought I'd forgotten something, but nevermind." Lacey forced herself to move, opening the door quickly and just jumping in. She slid over beside Max, trying not to pay attention to the all-too-familiar dashboard or any of the rest of the interior.

Her nausea worsened in the face of the memories that were spilling in sideways.

Mindfulness, Dr. Heffner had always emphasized.

Lacey swallowed and took another deep breath, reaching out to adjust Max's A/C settings. She had to have air even if she didn't want to touch any part of this car.

You're sitting in Max's brother's car -- not His. You're going to a party. Stone Temple Pilots is on the radio, not Frankie Vallie. You smell musty hockey gear, not cigarette smoke. You're okay. Open your eyes in 3... 2... 1...

"So where's Colin? Wasn't he riding with us?" her eyes shot open and she attempted to re-engage, deflecting Max's curious glance. Not that she enjoyed spending time with Max's dweeb of a friend, but she'd needed a quick escape.

Max looked over, grinned, then turned his eyes back to the road as they pulled out onto the freeway. "I told 'im to ride with Todd tonight. You and me need to talk."

"Talk?" Lacey couldn't stop fidgeting and reached to turn the radio down.

"Yeah. About homecoming. After the game. You know..."

Lacey sighed. "Yeah. I do know. I know how quickly you forget that we discussed this, and I told you already that it isn't happening til prom."

Max's hands tightened on the steering wheel tensely. "Lacey, come on. Tell me why homecoming is any different from prom."

"It just is. Prom's the last iconic thing before graduation, and besides: you promised you'd never push me to do this." Lacey used to blush when discussing with Max their big plan to lose their virginity to one another before they graduated. But by now, she only felt annoyed when he mentioned it, which was alot.

"Hey, who had the idea about The Wisteria Inn?" he shot back. "I believe the words used were 'I want the candles, I want the lingerie, I want the works, Max.' Well, so that's all I'm trying to do here -- get it planned out for us, okay? It's just, with graduation happening in the spring too and all, I mean don't you think it'll be less stress for us to plan to do it now?"

Lacey could feel her face grow hot. Sure, she'd romanticized the whole thing before, even though she'd talked to enough of her friends to know the first time was rarely that phenomenal. But lately, her old words about the whole thing had just felt naive -- particularly after one of her own friends had recently dropped out of school, pregnant. Did she really want to take a chance like that?

And with Max?

She and Max had met formally through Davy at a pre-game party at the beginning of last year's hockey season. Lacey had worked hard the first two years of high school to completely reinvent herself, and she'd experienced a good measure of success. She'd taken her hair from mousy brown to champagne blonde, had received a department store counter makeover, and updated her wardrobe piece-by-piece. This was all funded by babysitting money she'd determined to spend on nothing else. She had been so tired of being "Loosey Lacey" in middle school, especially after having borne the brunt of a particularly cruel prank by the boys in her eighth grade class, that she swore she would make them live to regret it.

And she had. She could feel the stares accumulating when she walked proudly by the lockers on the first day of her freshman year at R.M. High.

But being pretty and popular with the boys had come at a price: the girls she'd come close to actually considering friends became so resentful of her transformation, so jealous of and angry at the new Lacey, that they'd walked away and never looked back. Their sometimes-company at lunch and P.E. during those tumultuous middle school years was what Lacey missed the very most. She was sorry that they didn't understand the sudden change, but she reasoned that they had no idea what it had been like for her all those years since The Thing that had happened in fourth grade, triggering a case of what Dr. Heffner had deemed "severe trichotillomania." It caused her to bite her nails until they bled, often when she was unaware, and pull giant chunks out of her hair during the night. She'd also suffered from night terrors and blinding flashes of heat that she couldn't always disguise in front of the other kids. So Lacey had finally decided that, however much she'd have to suffer in private, she would no longer allow herself to feel powerless in public. And the confidence boost had worked, plus maybe the volunteer cat petting she did at the shelter twice a week. She barely had the spells anymore, and when she did pull, she made as much of an effort to do it on the underside of her hair as possible.

Loosey Lacey was on her way to being a thing of the past.

Meanwhile, in the midst of her loneliness, there was Max. She'd been smitten at first with his tall, broad form and the way he smelled faintly of car grease from his dad's mechanic shop. There were phone calls that lasted all night long, makeout sessions that fogged up the windows of his car, and weekend dates he'd gone out of his way to make romantic. It had been on such a date that they'd first made their plan for prom night. At that time, Lacey had still been infatuated enough with Max for giddy butterflies to hatch in her stomach at the very thought of experiencing one of the most important nights of her life with him. But now...

... Well, she wasn't sure what had changed. Was it his temper? The arrogance and bravado that had once made him so irresistible, but now just made him seem obnoxious?

"Let's just talk about it later. We don't have to have it all figured out tonight."

Max sighed and mumbled, "Whatever."

They drove for twenty minutes in silence until they reached the suburbs of Edina and were surrounded by houses so big and grand that if Lacey hadn't felt intimidated to be coming here before, she surely felt so now.

"The guy's name is Calloway, and his parents are out of town. Todd knows him better than I do," Max finally spoke as they pulled up in front of a sprawling Mediterranean-style home, each and every room lit up from the outside. Lacey could hear music as she emerged from the car, but it wasn't as loud as she'd expected, doubtlessly because no one would want the cops called on a boisterous house party being thrown by unsupervised teens.

Once they got out of the car, she could practically feel the difference in the atmosphere. The cars parked around them were mostly Masaratis and BMW's. The kids who roamed the well-manicured lawn wore polo shirts and khakis or vests and sleek pencil skirts.

We're not in Kansas anymore, Lacey unwittingly thought. She glanced down at her own outfit -- a lavender peasant shirt with flared Levi's and platforms -- and suddenly felt self-conscious. She reached up and fingered her choker, wishing she'd looked at her hair one more time in the rearview mirror of the car.

"Hey." Max slid an arm around her waist as they walked. "You look good enough. More than good. Who you trying to impress, anyway?" he leaned in for a kiss as they approached the front door. "Huh?" He moved his face in close to her.

Lacey gave a forced smile and obliged him quickly.

"Oh," Max drew back when she did, looking disappointed. "So that's all I'm gonna get?"

"Lipstick," she reminded him, shifting the bag on her shoulder.

Max turned back to the door, letting out a noisy sigh. Evidently she'd really put a damper on his spirits tonight. She knew it for sure when, after he entered the house, he seemed to disappear into a sea of people almost immediately.

Not that this was anything new. Max regularly forsook her soon after entering a party to go hang out with his hockey buddies, but those were parties at their own school. Lacey knew no one at Eden Hall, and therefore was left with nothing to do but stare around, being inadvertently pushed this way and that by the crowd that roamed through the darkened room carrying drinks and swaying drunkenly to The Notorious B.I.G.

Of course, aside from not knowing anyone here, this precisely fit the template of every other high school party. As Lacey wandered from one room to the next in search of Max, or at least a corner to duck into that wasn't taken up by couples making out, she saw all the familiar things: the red solo cups, the keg stands, the mini-skirts, the glittery eyeshadow...

And suddenly she just felt bored.

When she'd been a freshman, a sophomore, she imagined the life she'd come to lead now as an upperclassman dating a hockey star to be the most glamorous thing a person could achieve. But was it? Why had she thought that?

Even more disturbing to Lacey was, why was she suddenly thinking this way? She was bored with Max, with parties... what would be next?

Her mind began to drift toward her little sisters at home. What if she just hitched a ride back there and played monopoly with them for the rest of the night? The way Max had completely ditched her, he deserved to be abandoned like that.

If she went now, she could--

"Hey heeeey!" the drunk loser a couple of feet from her crossed the room in three giant, wobbly steps. "Banksie!"

Lacey rolled her eyes and started to turn away until she caught sight of who had just appeared in the doorway along with a handful of other people: Adam Banks.

Sure, she'd kept loose tabs on what he'd been up to the last few years. He'd started playing for the Ducks when they were nothing more than an upstart team coached by a lawyer pulling community service. His phenomenal talent was part of what had taken them from a losing track record to formidable competition. Pretty soon, he was granted a hockey scholarship, along with the other Ducks, to play for the private school Eden Hall. That's the last Lacey had heard, but she could always recognize the strikingly large, blue, serious eyes that had stuck with her.

"You finally came!" the boy who had approached Adam had swung an arm across his shoulders. "Take a picture, folks!"

Adam appeared to wince, then laugh and push the other boy's arm off. "You know I don't have time for this stuff. Practice every night when there's no game, 5am on Fridays..."

"Well you're here now, right?"

Lacey studied Adam from several feet away, thinking about him and Max. How could a person become so absorbed in and obsessed with a game? Jocks were all alike.

She had to jar herself to come back to reality and finally turn away from Adam Banks. N'Sync began blaring over the stereo system just a short distance from her, emitting a chorus of boos from some boys, and Lacey moved away quickly. There were still times loud music or noises made her feel like reaching up and pulling out a fistful of her hair. The sensation made her skin crawl.

Wandering into the kitchen, Lacey was offered a bottle of beer from a grinning guy pulling a new sixpack out of the fridge. She took it, popping off the cap with the bottle opener on the counter. From there, she wandered into the hallway, marveling at how quickly Max had apparently gotten lost. She issued a plastic smile to a girl she knew from R.M. High coming out of a bedroom with a guy she'd never seen before.

Feeling a little overwhelmed by the suffocating closeness of party guests, Lacey found a door to the outside and took it. She stumbled out into the cool night air, taking a few deep breaths. After her head managed to stop spinning, she found a stone bench in the garden to collapse onto. Taking a few more sips of beer, she looked around and came to realize just how lonely she felt. It wasn't Max's absence, necessarily. She could actually feel her loneliest around him.

To distract herself from the negativity train blazing through her mind, Lacey took her mind to the Cat's Cradle.

She'd happened upon the cat shelter totally by accident one day while walking home from school a different way than usual. She'd found herself strolling down a short strand of shops on a street she'd all but forgotten when she'd seen a woman outside writing with chalk on the stand-up sign. As she came closer, she saw what was being written:

"Three tabby kittens, 3mo, have shots."

She'd looked up at Lacey and smiled as though she'd known her for years.

"What a pretty vest!"

"Oh... thank you." Lacey glanced down, then back up. "You have kittens?" The question fell from her lips before she could stop it. Looking over toward the shelter, she caught a couple pairs of feline eyes staring back at her through the window.

"Yes! We sure do," the woman beamed, eyes crinkling in a way that reminded Lacey of warm grandmothers. How she wished she'd known her own. "Those are a couple of our more docile cats who aren't up for adoption. We just let them roam around and welcome visitors. That one's Fred," she pointed to a sprightly-looking cat with perked ears. "Then there we have Gracie Mae." The other was a grey, long-haired cat who blinked lazily at Lacey from her perch.

Lacey smiled at them, approaching the window and tapping very lightly with her fingernail in greeting.

"Do you have cats of your own?"

Lacey shook her head. "My mom and little sisters are all allergic."

"Would you like to come in and see them?" the woman, who later introduced herself as Alice, inquired brightly.

Lacey began to walk home that way every day, occasionally stepping in to spend time with the cats kept there in large, roomy cages, and before she knew it she was spending at least an hour a couple of times a week in their presence until she was "officially" offered a volunteer position.

"They all need love, and a chance to get out and roam around, but there's only a couple of us on staff to give them those things. Don't let cats fool you, Dear. They're self-sufficient, but still affectionate and crave a good petting. You'd be perfect. Something tells me you need a little love yourself."

Lacey had wanted to protest this. She was in no way lacking love or anything else, but still -- this could be fun, couldn't it? And it was something all her own, the way Max had hockey and her mother had Stuart.

Soon, Lacey wished she could just live there at Cat's Cradle. It helped her think a little less about herself, and it served to drive out the memories that still skulked along beside her everywhere she went.

Memories of Him -- and what had happened all those years ago that she couldn't forget.

How had thinking about the shelter led to that again?

Lacey began to take more frequent sips of beer without realizing it. Before she knew it, she'd downed the entire bottle, and, unaccustomed to drinking much, she began to feel a little loose. She knew her mother would never believe she occasionally drank beer at parties. It wasn't something she even necessarily felt good about... it was honestly just something mindless to do while holding mindless conversations with mindless people.

After awhile she stood up again, feeling considerably more relaxed and ready to find Max. The promise of Monopoly with Ariel and Halen warmed her.

Close to the French doors leading from the garden back into the house, Lacey noticed a barrel she'd witnessed various people use as a garbage can. She walked toward it and chucked her beer in the barrel before hearing the Wallflowers taking over the radio from the inside. From the sound of it, the entire house was rocking out in almost one voice to "One Headlight." It was a thunderous sound, and Lacey wasn't sure she wanted to be in the middle of it. So she just stood next to the barrel and waited.

She stood there awhile, looking up at the starry sky, until she heard rustling on the other side of the hedge she was close to. Beginning to back away, she stopped short hearing two voices she soon realized weren't aimed at her.

"Okay Banksie, show me what you got."

Banksie? Adam Banks?

Lacey stood as still as she could, leaning closer to the hedge so she could hear the exchange above the din of the house party. What followed was the muted sound of paper rustling. It must have been money.

A laugh followed. "Oh yeah. Scoring dope for rich kids. I've found my jam. You know, if it's that bad, why don't you just smoke some pot?"

"Tried it," a testy voice replied hurriedly. "It doesn't work. Just give me the percocets."

"Whoa whoa whoa, hold onto your balls, dude. Let me count these beans again."

"Oh come on, I brought exactly what you told me to."

"Here. Twenty. That enough until tomorrow?"

"Yeah, of course," she heard Adam scoff. "I'm not looking to get hooked on anything, I just need to keep the pain under control. Coach is starting to put stuff together."

Surely this wasn't the Banks she was familiar with.

Only, of course it was. The voice was the same she'd heard earlier when he'd entered the room,and "coach" was obviously a tie to hockey.

Lacey wrinkled up her nose, feeling disgust surge through her veins. Adam Banks was a good guy -- she'd believed that from her youth. So what was he doing buying pills from some random dealer at a party?

And Percocets!

So much for him turning out to be such a prince, such a variation from the average dumb jock she mostly encountered. Lacey knew very little about street drugs, but she did know about Percocets. She knew they were highly addictive pain pills that athletes were always trying to get ahold of for sports injuries. This was apparently the situation here.

Hearing that the rave inside was over now, Lacey headed back for the French doors, but in her clumsiness, she accidentally kicked the trash barrels, causing each one of the glass bottles inside to rattle onto one another and make a noise that sounded ten times louder to her than it should have. She froze.

"Hey! Hey wait!" From around the other side of the hedge, Adam dashed out, eyes flashing at Lacey. "What were you standing there?"

Lacey caught sight of a shady figure in a ballcap and a hoodie taking his opportunity to slink away behind Adam.

"As far as I know it's a party," she snapped back at him. "Why shouldn't I be out here? I was just throwing a bottle away before going back inside and I tripped. How about you, what's your excuse?"

Adam was close enough now that even under the moonlight she could see the light dusting of boyish freckles across his nose.

He paused, blinking as though he was baking up a good excuse. "I was just... I needed a little help with something, okay?"

His eyes grew wide. "That's what you think this is? I'm not addicted to anything. I just needed a little-- wait, why am I even explaining this to you? What's it your business?" he retorted.

"You mean like a little help with your addiction?" she mouthed off before she could stop herself.

His eyes grew wide. "That's what you think this is? I'm not addicted to anything. I just needed a little-- wait, why am I even explaining this to you? What's it your business?" he retorted.

"You tell me. I was just leaving." she shrugged.

"Wait." Adam swung around in front of her before she could get to the doors. His demeanor seemed to have softened considerably. "What can I do to buy your silence? I'm sure you know I have money. Really, I don't want anybody else finding out about this, it could tank--" he broke off for a moment, "... Everything. You name your price."

Lacey frowned, remembering years ago how her mother warned her about people who thought everyone came with a price tag -- people like him and his dad. "Sorry, this may come as a surprise to someone like you, but I'm not for sale."

"God," he closed his eyes, looking sickened. When he opened them again, he looked fierce. "I need you to tell no one about this, you hear? No one. Least of all Max."

She hesitated. "You know Max?" words continued to fall from her mouth. "I mean, of course you know Max, he plays center at R.M., but why would you think... I mean... do you know me?"

What if he had remembered her after all these years, despite their brief encounter? And the dyed hair?

Warmth filled Lacey's belly. She'd never gotten to thank him, after all, for giving her that tiny boost of confidence at a time when she really needed it--

But clearly this wasn't the time.

"Max Shipley's girlfriend?" he was asking. "Yeah. Everybody knows that. So just... don't tell him, alright?"

Lacey shook her head slowly. "It's your own business, so whatever. I'm not saying anything. But... just tell me, why are you doing this? You know those are highly addictive."

"Like I said, it doesn't matter," Adam's defensiveness returned. "Just forget you ever saw me. And besides, like you need to be drinking beer." He eyed the barrel full of bottles. "What are you, like sixteen?" But he pushed past her, not waiting for an answer.

"Almost eigh.... teen...." she called after him before sighing.

Okay, so what if he was right?

Only no, he wasn't! Beer might be illegal for her, but selling percocets was illegal for everyone, and for good reason!

"Hey Babe," a sunglassed figure lurched out at her from the French doors after Adam passed through to the inside. It was Max. "How you doin? Say, it's starting to get lame around here. Wanna go with Brandy and Todd to the lake?"

"Actually no," Lacey fixed her face. "I just want to go home. You can drop me off there on the way."

"What?! Ah, come on! Why not?"

"Because I'm not as drunk as you, that's why not. Max, it's October. In Minnesota. You'll freeze your asses off." Lacey wrapped her arms around herself just thinking about it.

Max stared at her for a long time, face falling. "Know what, Lacey? You're no fun anymore. Seventeen going on seventy. Whatever, let's go."

Lacey sighed and followed him, heading back through the house without taking the hand he held out to her as they walked.

Close to the front door, they passed Adam Banks. He was rubbing the back of his neck, eyes darting around nervously. When they caught hers, he held the gaze for a moment, pleading silently.

She gave a tight nod, heading out the door.

So... I realized just how many writings I started, but never got around to finishing. It’d be cool to share them with you guys, but also to get an idea on what you think I should finish? Maybe help me bounce some ideas around too? c: It’ll help me knock out a few things in my files, so definitely have a look and let me know what you think/what you’d be interested in seeing me continue!

Here we go with previews galore! (Also to compensate for the fact that I’ve been tagged in alot of preview tag games. OOPS.)

Numb -- Ardyn Izunia x Ravus Nox Fleuret Genre: Angst, Romance, Drama, Tragedy Plot: Ravus survived the fall after Iedolas and his daemons attempt to execute the high commander. But when Ravus attempts to recover from the fall, a familiar face approaches him with a way out. Notes: An alternative dialogue to Chapter 13, Verse 2. Dialogue-based. Ardyn is almost not as bad as he seems. Almost. Rejection hurts, doesn’t it?

The fall made his limbs feel numb, a weight so heavy upon his body that left him trapped in his place on the ground. Consciousness wavered, threatening to darken and force his vision to fade completely. Breath grew heavy as he tried to stabilize his well-being. He attempted to force himself to rise once more, but shaking arms refused to lift himself up, to raise his blade once again. Only the sound of rattling metal against the ground from the blade and the magitek prosthetic could mingle with the pained breaths desperately clawed their way from his lungs. Dammit…

He refused to clash with his body as his arms collapsed back down at their sides again. It seemed as if his own vessel betrayed him, refusing to move until some recovering was given after the onslaught of Aldercapt’s true nature. Daemons… Far direr than the Astrals had foretold and far more dangerous… Arrested for crimes against the empire and Iedolas’s impatience in obtaining the ring from Lunafreya and Noctis, Iedolas would lash out at whomever stood in his way to obtaining the power of the Crystal. The ex-commander was among one of those obstacles, hindering him from taking the ring from its rightful thing. And as far as Iedolas knew, he had plummeted to his death. At least, he could only hope that Iedolas still thought that. He needed to move and escape this blasted area. To find Noctis and return what had been taken. Lingering here would only condemn him to death much faster than he anticipated…

How Amusing! -- A Fantasy Dad Simulator Story Genre: Comedy Plot: Going to Moogletopia was a good idea at the time, but it seemed like the Fleuret kids were suffering more than anything. Notes: Inspired by the FFXV x Dream Daddy headcanons. Features OC children for Ravus (the Fleuret kids). Uncle Ardyn takes the kids to Moogletopia and has more fun than the kids do.

“If I have to ride the Tea Cups one more time, I’m going to seriously vomit.” Her face seemed to tell the entire story as she sat on the park bench. Lips were firmly pressed together, the corners turned downward into a frown while eyebrows remained furrowed as a glare fixated itself on the ground. She was paler than usual as she let out paced breaths to soothe her jumbled-up stomach. Even if she prided herself in being braver than her lazy brother, she never did handle rides that spun well. Damn this motion sickness. “That ride is everything I hate about the world...”

“A spinning prison with manic laughing in the background? Yup. Everything for sure.” The younger boy leaned back on his arms, head hanging back as he stared up at the sky. So much noise around them all, and it didn’t seem to let up as the day progressed through. Guess that was the unfortunate thing about being out in a place like this – people left in right, children crying, the like. This was worse than the day he had offered to babysit the Amicitia newborns. And those two little assholes were loud. He let out a groan, holding up his phone as a frown crossed over his lips. “How long have we been here…?”

“Six hours, fifty-six minutes, and some number of seconds. Any chance we can go home yet?”

“Not until the fireworks show.”

“And when’s that?”

He lifted his phone back up again to check. “Another hour or two…”

“Fuckin’ hell…“

Animals -- Gladiolus Amicitia x Ravus Nox Fleuret Genre: Romance, NSFW Plot: Sometimes, the Fleuret vs Amicitia sparring matches can get quite heated. Notes: A REALLY NSFW writing. Rivalmances galore! Probably has alot of kinky things in it. Maybe.

Damn… Even though he didn’t want to admit it, Ravus found himself struggling to keep up with his opponent. Open areas and clearings were one thing to fight in, but in such a closed-quarter space such as the woods, Ravus was finding himself in a bigger predicament than he anticipated as he attempted to evade each attack from the massive blade that slashed at him. No matter where Ravus tried to dodge, that sword would easily cleave through it all as if they were nothing more than sheets of paper. It was a challenge, but one that he would have to force himself to endure as he ducked through the thicket of trees with his opponent following in suit.

“What’s wrong, Ravus? Aren’t you usually the one telling me not to run?”

Ravus gritted his teeth as he quickly ducked into cover behind one of the larger trees, listening carefully as heavy footsteps had stopped nearby to search for the commander. This was bad… Running will only get him so far, and it would be demeaning to continue to retreat from his opponent. And yet, if he fought, this forest would be considerably damage, and he would only struggle to continue to fight as he avoided not only his opponent, but the environmental hazards already there or being made by the enemy. He swore under his breath, hoping that nobody heard the profanity that escaped from him. He’d have to come up with a better tactic. Something that could disorient this behemoth of a man and allow him his victory.

Devour -- Ardyn Izunia x Ravus Nox Fleuret Genre: Romance, Horror, Drama Plot: When a monster assaults the castle, it’s up to the beloved prince to keep it distracted long enough to prevent it from going after the others attempting to flee from its destruction. Notes: A Dark Souls AU request. Features Ravus as Gwyndolin (kinda) and Ardyn as Aldrich the Devourer. Pretty triggering with body horror, choking, inappropriate touching, and... Well, he’s called the Devourer and all. Maybe NSFW because of horror?

He did all that he could. Even if he wished to do more, the most that was possible was simply aiding in the evacuation of his sister and the rest of the royal servants as needed. He would provide a line of defense until then, but for now, he simply wished that his sister remained safe – away from Tenebrae and far gone from what horrors would occur soon.

For at the doors of the throne room, a creature scraped at it, clawing its way against the wood as vile shrieks resonated in the air on the opposite side of the door. Monsters had already made it to the throne room, tearing through the defenses of Tenebrae castle and destroying whatever poor soul happened to cross paths with such a malevolent force. The prince hung his gaze, bowing his head with the golden headdress shining in the light for only a split moment before the doors burst apart and darkness spilled in. A foul smell flooded the air, the prince's stomach twisting with a nauseating feeling as the mixture of black slime and shadows crawled through the chambers in an eagerness towards the prince. The prince's eyes narrowed at the sight, a warped mess of bones and flesh mixed into the darkness itself. It seemed that the soldiers were no match for such a devastating monstrosity.

I'm driving uninsured right now because for me to get car insurance is $900 every six months. That would crush me financially right now. Between rent and gas, and what little Starbucks pretends to pay me, not to mention food (and sometimes that's one meal a day, and even then it may be stealing expired sandwiches and pastries from the garbage can at Starbucks). So, it's utterly naive of the government to think of driving as a luxury , when in reality- when you have to travel 20 miles a day to get to work at Starbucks- walking is unrealistic. How the hell do they expect a 24-year old man to afford car insurance, when he has to work to earn the money to pay for it, and he has to drive to work, and in order to drive he has to drive illegally?! I just had to bring my car to the shop for a repair. They ended up needing to keep it. Now a rental was covered under the warranty. So at least the rental was covered. But the guy had me signing off on insurance and what not. I guess the insurance on my car would cover the rental if I had an accident. But they would take from my cars deductible. So I basically signed off on a Collision Damage Waiver and also personal accident insurance. I did decline supplemental liability insurance though. Should the warranty be covering these fees or was this an extra that I got talked into? Because if the warranty covers the rental they aren't making anything. My understanding is it could be better because I am covered under their insurance if I have an accident and it wouldn't come off my own cars deductible? I was told by his insurance company (USAA) that witnesses not listed on the police report could not be used, but his friend is not on the police report and they are waiting for her statement. NC State Highway Patrol responded to the scene and the driver was cited for failure to yield the right of way. The driver was apologetic and admitted several times around a number of people that he must have blanked out or was daydreaming from the frustration of the school bus. USAA is saying that they need to make sure that my daughter was not 1% at fault, meaning speeding perhaps. The officer estimated her speed at impact at around 40 mph and the speed limit is 55mph. She hit the drivers back tire of his Jeep Wrangler (small truck) causing him to rest in a small trench or ditch ion the side of the attempted driveway. The front passenger side above the front tire and the front by the headlight is damaged on her car. She tried to avoid him, protect her younger sister (13) and avoid veering to much left in fear of hitting the school bus. My girls were terrified when I arrived 15 minutes after the accident. USAA stated that she may have had time to instanly stop, but she tried everything that she could do. In my opinion, she should have never been put into that situation. USAA is saying that points of contact are off, but my insurance agent said that she hit the back tire because a Jeep Wrangler is only 5 ft long and he was not towing a boat or driving a common sized vehicle. Officer responded and insured admitted to police officer that he tapped rear bumper. My company offers health insurance but its a dumb plan?

well they dont have like a set insurace. They have this guy who sells insurance policies and he signed me up for one but it sucks. I have like this $5000 deductible and they are real strick and what not. My job pays 50% and I pay the other.
