Crosby, Stills and Nash to be Subject of Next Music Of … Benefit

- Todd Rundgren, Rickie Lee Jones, Aoife O’Donovan and Sarah Jarosz among performers for May 13 event

A “diverse and talented group” of musicians will come together to perform Crosby, Stills and Nash songs May 13 in New York City.

The show is the 19th-annual Music Of … benefit for music eduction for underserved young people and will feature Todd Rundgren, founder of the like-minded Spirit of Harmony Foundation; Rickie Lee Jones; two-thirds of I’m with Her in Aoife O’Donovan and Sarah Jarosz; Steve Earle, Shawn Colvin and others.

It’s a “profound honor,” said Graham Nash, who will “be a part of” the concert, though his capacity is not specified.

“I look forward to seeing a diverse and talented group of artists perform our songs,” Nash said in a statement.

“Music has always been about connection, about sharing stories and emotions that resonate with each other. This event allows us to relive those connections and support a cause close to our hearts - music education.”

We don’t know if we’re equipped to episode this much, but here we are. A bomb so fiery, we brought host of The Incinerator podcast host Billy Ray Brewton to help us unpack it all: 2018′s Life Itself. From This Is Us’ Dan Fogelman, the film assembles a large ensemble including Oscar Isaac, Olivia Wilde, Olivia Cooke, and Antonio Banderas to tell a tale of big emotions, intergenerational heartache, and unreliable narrators. The film arrived as a TIFF gala with big weepy expectations, and like a rogue MTA bus right out of the film, critics brought on a brutal and well-earned drubbing.

After partnering with other distributors for previous releases, this film was Amazon’s widest solo release and quickly became as big of a bomb for audiences as it was for critics. This episode, we unpack what makes it such a mess and how Amazon succeeded that year with Cold War instead. We also talk about the umpteen versions of “Make You Feel My Love,” This is Us’ Emmy flub this season, and Amazon’s purchase of United Artists.

Graham Nash is 2023 John Lennon Real Love Award Winner

- “This is a very special award,” Nash says

Graham Nash is the 2023 John Lennon Real Love award winner.

Nash will receive the honor and play his favorite Beatles/Lennon songs at the 43rd-annual John Lennon Tribute Dec. 2 in New York. Rosanne Cash, Rita Coolidge, Marc Cohn, Shawn Colvin, Judy Collins and Bettye LaVette are among the other scheduled performers.

“This is a very special award,” Nash said in a statement.

“I thank Yoko (Ono) and the Theatre Within for thinking of me. Over many years, I watched John and Yoko fight the good fight for many whose voices were not being heard, a fight that Yoko continues to this day. I’m proud to be associated with the many fine artists who were previously honored with the … award.”

Those artists include Cash, Joan Osborne, Ani DiFranco, Natalie Merchant, Donovan and others.

Proceeds from the event benefit Theatre Within’s programs for elementary and middle schools, youth in crisis and people affected by cancer.

“Theatre Within is furthering the vision that John and I shared for a better world,” Ono said in a statement.

Way too many female singer-songwriters of the 90's were grouped together despite each of them having their own peculiarities that did not really overlap. I mean, what does, for instance, Shawn Colvin had in common with most of her peers? Don't consider this to be a provocation, I'm merely pointing out that many women musicians were banded together for no apparent reason. To return to Shawn Colvin – she reminds me of the 90's version of Juice Newton. I don't think that suggests much commonality with, say, Lisa Loeb, though the media put them together in a neat box without actually hearing what they had to say about that. I agree, one didn't notice this problem at the time, the issue became more apparent much later on.
