Alison Krauss & Shawn Colvin | The Boxer | Performing at the ceremony to honor Paul Simon as the first recipient of the Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song.
I love a good cover tune, and this one practically brought tears to my eyes. Paul sure can write the fuck out of a song.

Song Review: My Bluegrass Heart with Jerry Douglas - “Boulderdash” (Live, 2022)
Packing a 15-string punch with a triple-banjo attack and a guesting Dobro master Jerry Douglas, Béla Fleck’s My Bluegrass Heart wasn’t messing around when it rolled out “Boulderdash” at the 2022 Grey Fox Bluegrass festival.
An instrumental played with wildfire intensity, it features solos from fiddler Michael Cleveland, Douglas, Fleck, guitarist Bryan Sutton and others all packed into six minutes of lighting-fast sawing, sliding and picking.
And while such sonic shenanigans might be too much of a good thing in lesser hands, Fleck’s Bluegrass Heart pumps just enough oxygen to keep up the pace without risking palpitations. No balderdash in this “Boulderdash,” which was just released on video.

It was 20 years ago today: bassist Viktor Krauss released his solo debut album, Far From Enough, on Nonesuch. On the album, Krauss collaborates with guitarists Bill Frisell and Jerry Douglas and drummer Steve Jordan, and sister Alison Krauss vocalizes on the Robert Plant tune “Big Log.” You can hear it here.

Mark O'Connor violin, Tony Rice guitar, Jerry Douglas dobro, Sam Bush mandolin, Mark Schatz bass and Bela Fleck banjo performing “Freeborn Man“. Merlefest early 1990's. ________________________ Freeborn Man Songwriters: Keith Allison and Mark Lindsay
I was born in the Southland
Some twenty odd years ago
I ran away for the first time When I was only four years old
I'm a freeborn man My home is on my back I know every inch of highway Every foot of back road Every mile of railroad track
I got a lady in Cincinnati
A woman in San Antone
And I always love the girl next door But any place is home
I'm a freeborn man Home is on my back I know every inch of highway Every foot of back road Every mile of railroad track
And I got me a worn out guitar
I carry an old tone sack
And I hocked it about two hundred times But I always get it back
I'm a freeborn man Home is on my back I know every inch of highway Every foot of back road Every mile of railroad track
Well, you may not like my appearance
You may not like my song
You may not like the way I talk But you sure like the way I'm gone
I'm a freeborn man Home is on my back I know every inch of highway Every foot of back road Every mile of railroad track
I was born in the Southland
Some twenty odd years ago
I ran away for the first time When I was only four years old
I'm a freeborn man Home is on my back I know every inch of highway Every foot of back road Every mile of railroad track

CMT Hot 20 Presents Let Freedom Sing!
So today on the MSR (Midnight Star Review), I would like to talk about the latest edition of Let freedom sing! The show was by CMT (Country Music Television) and hosted by Cody Alan. And the performer was Brad Paisley playing his hits. The show took place on CMT and was on Tuesday July 4th, 2023 and was on at 10pm EST (Eastern Standard Time). So let see what Brad played for us on this special night.
Set list. So many Summers. The love boat. Water. Jerry Douglas, & Dan Tyminski played "Man of constant sorrow". This is Country Music. American Saturday night. Celebrity Whiskey lullaby with Kelleigh Bannen. Let the good times roll (Tribute to B.B. King). Mud on tires. Alcohol.
And that's a wrap for this special performance. And on the MSR (Midnight Star Review), I would give this show a 3 out of 5 stars. My biggest complaint about these concerts are they only 1 hour long. Brad has a lot of hits, and he did deserve more time. It was good to go down memory lane with Brad's hits. Thanks for taking the time to read this review. See ya all next time.

“"He was a total pro, even though he was a heavy, heavy drinker at that time," Douglas says. "I remember when we were done for the day, he liked to hang around the bar. He was not a snob star at all. He used to talk to everybody. He really loved people and people loved him...He would get a few drinks in him at night and he would get a little flirtatious. After he had three or four scotches, he'd come over to me and say, ‘Well, Jerry, are we going to dance tonight?’ I'd say, ‘You're a lousy dancer and I know a few guys prettier than you. I'll see you around.’ And he'd laugh his ass off."
As Jerry Douglas remembers: "We had some bad weather in the middle of the shoot and by ‘bad,’ I mean it got warm. Well, we had this scene to do where Rock and I are digging through a snow tunnel, trying to reach his mother, who is trapped inside the resort…We're in this fake tunnel that's got white crap all over it that's supposed to look like snow but it wasn't very convincing…Now imagine, Rock and I were laying in this thing for hours face-to-face and only about four inches apart. I said, ‘Rock, if you do what I think you're thinking of doing, I'm going to kick your ass.’ I said, ‘I don't like your breath right now. I think you need some mouthwash, so don't you dare kiss me,’ He got a big kick out of it. This was our way of getting through all of this. I always enjoyed his sense of humor.
He was, without a doubt, one of the most agreeable people I ever worked with."”

Song Review: Béla Fleck - “Unidentified Piece for Banjo”
The Library of Congress found it and Béla Fleck got the first crack at George Gershwin’s “Unidentified Piece for Banjo.”
A solo piece, it finds Fleck demonstrating his peerless playing style - three distinct parts are audible from this one guy - while allow the composer’s personality and environment to shine through the decades-old music.
It’s out to announce Fleck’s Rhapsody in Blue, which arrives Feb. 12, 2024, the 100th anniversary of the title piece premiering in New York City. It contains three versions, “Rhapsody in Blue(grass),” recorded with My Bluegrass Heart; “Rhapsody in Blue(s)” with Sam Bush, Jerry Douglas and Victor Wooten; and a traditional performance with the Virginia Symphony Orchestra and Fleck handling the piano parts on banjo.
“I had never heard anything like it – it was love at first listen,” Fleck says of his first exposure to “Rhapsody.”
Fans might feel the same way about “Unidentified Piece for Banjo,” which rounds out the LP alongside “Rialto Ripples.”

Grammy–winning singer, songwriter, and musician Molly Tuttle and her band, Golden Highway, will release their new album, City of Gold, July 21, on Nonesuch. You can pre-order and hear the track “El Dorado” now here.
Produced by Tuttle and Jerry Douglas and recorded in Nashville, City of Gold was inspired by Tuttle’s near constant touring with Golden Highway—fiddler Bronwyn Keith-Hynes, mandolinist Dominick Leslie, bassist Shelby Means, and banjo player Kyle Tuttle—and their growth together as musicians and performers, cohering as a band. These 13 tracks, mostly written by Tuttle and Ketch Secor (Old Crow Medicine Show), capture the electric energy of the band’s live shows by highlighting each members’ musical strengths. City of Gold also features special guest Dave Matthews on the song “Yosemite.”
