Sunday Sub-Mariner's World
Tumblr media
SURF first appeared in New Mutants Annual 5, which was one of the Atlantis Attacks crossover annuals. Created by Louise Simonson and Rob Liefield. The team consisted of a trio of Atlanteans from the Maritania settlement which was nuclear test site. This was before the X-gene concept so I'm not sure if they are still considered mutants, but they only showed up in one more issue, West Coast Avengers Annual 5.
The team consists of:
Undertow - a water manipulator ... with fabulous hair
Eel - a stretchy sort of underwater Mr. Fantastic
Sharkskin - a strong guy with spikes across his arms and shoulders for TEARING through things. I don't know what to tell you it. It was the 90s.
They had been exiled from conquered Atlantis by Attuma because they were mutants, but were loyal to the city and Namor. They join Namorita to recover a Horn of Doom (Proteus) that was stolen from her by agents of Deviant Ghaur, who resembled the New Mutants. SURF and Namorita find the New Mutants, engage in an obligatory misunderstanding fight, before joining forces to take on Ghaur and the monster he's summoned to destroy Atlantis.
They dispatch the monster, save most of Atlantis and it's people, but Ghaur flees and the Horn appears to be lost again.
They were clearly meant to be a Teen Atlantean Team, but Marvel went with New Warriors, and put Namorita on that team.

NAMORITA -- EEL -- SHARKSKIN -- UNDERTOW -- A SENSATIONAL SUPER-TEAM FOR THE SEVEN SEAS.
PIC(S) INFO: Spotlight on a Mighty Marvel pin-up featuring Namorita Prentiss, cousin of Namor the Sub-Mariner, alongside the Atlantean mutant super-team, SURF, remastered & original artwork from "New Mutants Annual" Vol. 1 #5. June, 1989. Marvel Comics. Artwork by Rob Liefeld & Joe Rubinstein.
Resolution at 1145x1711 & 1078x1600.
MINI-BIO: "SURF is a team of three mutant Atlanteans. They first appeared during the largest Atlantean invasion yet attempted, the so-called "Atlantis Attacks" affair. However, instead of joining their brethren, the SURF acted as outlaws, saving several surface dwellers from harm. They remained together as Atlantean outlaws ever since."

Love fashion nerd Sanji. Partly bc it means he and Zoro have had a million conversations that look like this:
“Still wearing your prissy silk suit, huh? Why would you fight in something like that?”
“First of all, this is fucking cotton corduroy,” Sanji snaps, gesturing down at himself. “You think I’d willingly fight in silk? I’m not a savage. Do you know how hard that would be to clean?”
Zoro blinks dully at him. “Uh, yeah, I guess we know how much you hate getting your hands dirty,” he says after a moment, looking pointedly at Sanji’s gloves.
Oh, fuck this guy.
“They’re full-grain chrome-tanned goat leather!” Sanji says defensively, then promptly realizes he sounds insane— but there’s nothing he can really do about that right now. “I don’t know why I’m bothering discussing this with you,” he continues, shooing Zoro with his hands in the air. “You couldn’t tell the difference between a seersucker and a sharkskin.”
For the first time during this conversation, Zoro’s interest looks mildly piqued. “They make clothes out of shark skin?”
This fucking pile of moss.
“Not the kind you’re thinking,” Sanji sighs with exasperation.

Seventh entry for @sweetspicybingo - Coffee (third bingo! only two more to go for blackout)
Narutoverse | KisaKonan | G | ~700 words
How Akatsuki disposes of the dead is not a concern to Kisame the way it is for Konan. After they kill the Kumo-nin, she wraps the body in a paper shroud and lights three sticks of incense before Zetsu comes. Even traitors deserve proper rites; or at least the rites she can spare. After the affair is done, she teaches Kisame how to perform the transmission jutsu so they can report mission-status to Pein. He congratulates them on a job well-done and asks if they can accommodate a second mission on their way back. (Konan knows by now that there is no room to refuse.)
This is how they find themselves entering a dark, wet cave in Hot Water Country. The strong smell of salt and limestone envelop them in a thick, humid blanket. When they reach the shore, it's pitch black outside. One can hardly see the schooner tied to a hastily-made dock. The skeleton crew of five is easy work for Kisame– not even worth his blade. He drowns them in the sea before they even notice he's there while Konan goes through the captain's things.
The schooner is a light vessel, carrying no more than twenty crates and lit only by three oil lamps. A horse-cart and a donkey are tied up, braying as Konan unties the beast. It runs off into the night. No sense in taking something that'll only slow them down.
"How much does Leader-sama want us to take back?" Kisame asks, surveying the crates.
"He didn't say." She answers as she finds a crowbar to pry one of the crates open. Cotton bolts. There's five crates full of cotton bolts. She finds five more loaded with silk. Pein wants them to sell this? Kakuzu must be on thin coffers if he's asking Akatsuki to rob some poor merchant.
She hears the sharp slam of a crate top behind her. Looking behind, Konan sees Kisame recoiling, lips curled back in disgust. Something he found? Perhaps the cargo is unusual after all. She opens a canvas bag and finds small, fragrant beans. Dried? Dipping her hand in, they sound like heavy grains of rice as they fall between her fingers back into the bulk.
"Hoshigaki-san, come here. Bring another lamp."
The additional light doesn't solve the mystery. They look like adzuki beans. But adzuki beans don't smell like this; warm and bitter.
"They're coffee beans." Kisame offers. (Konan is getting tired of not knowing so many things outside of Amegakure.) "Something from the west. The daimyo like it."
Ah, so they're illegal beans.
"This whole shipment is probably going to one manor."
She leaves his side, examining the other crates. Books in English. More cotton bolts. Then, she happens upon a crate that hasn't been properly shut. The one Kisame didn't like? Konan pushes the top aside and digs through the straw. Her hands meet something rough. She hangs the lamp on a post and brings it up. Another bolt– something like leather but with more scales. The texture is fine and sandy. What is it they use to wrap katana hilts with?
"Sharkskin." She whispers to herself, realizing what it must be from Kisame's reaction.
Kisame returns to her after he's done with inventory. Five bags of coffee beans. Two crates of books. Eight crates each of silk and cotton. He looks around her and tells her, "Three crates of shagreen." Even though none of the crates have been opened.
"What do you want to bring back, Konan-san?"
There's no argument in her mind.
"Ten kilos of coffee, five bolts of silk, and as many books as we can carry. Bury the leftover coffee, books, and silk. I'll send for it later."
"What of the rest?"
"Sink the rest."
A look of quiet relief pans across Kisame's face. He does as he's ordered while Konan sorts through their plunder. Later, when they're eating at camp, he thanks her.
"What for?"
"The shagreen is worth more than the whole ship. You knew that."
Yet she ordered him to dump it. Konan blinks and settles her mind, breath coming to a quiet pulse.
"My comrades are worth more than shagreen."
Kisame looks at her in shock. Unable to reply, he simply goes back to his meal. If she looks hard enough, Konan swears she can see him smile.

alright so sharkskin discourse.
{pauses to turn off comments and replies}
I use 'sharkskin discourse' (or, if I'm annoyed, 'disk horse') to describe any thread where pedants are being baited into arguing with clowns, thereby themselves looking foolish. named after the codifying "shark skin is smooth! >:3" threadnaught, of course, but it is actually an entire category of discussion.
it is a failure mode of playing to the audience.
on the one hand you have the pedants. to be fair, these are often cishet white guys with an overinflated sense of their own self worth and intellect. the pedants attempt to resolve the thread by supplying correct information. when this doesn't work, they are perplexed. for whatever reason, they cannot immediately realize that they have been cast in the role of lolcows.
on the other hand you have the trolls. these are the people who realize and exploit that the pedants will be slow to give up, because they're dumber than they think they are. the trolls use misinformation to prolong the thread, thereby increasing the enjoyable spectacle of pedants consistently missing the point.
yeah, ok, mansplaining bad, but nonetheless these things are so frustrating to me to read that I usually block the op and the most instrumental commenters.
"won't someone think of the poor cishet white guys" no, shut up for a moment. I do not care about that.
what I care about is that the pedants are exhibiting an autistic trait - inability to read cues - and the trolls are exploiting this. for pages and pages and pages. no one ever says "this isn't about that, we just want to have fun today, this isn't a teaching thread and your efforts to teach are unwelcome". because then they wouldn't be milking the lolcows.
that's why this disk horse is free blocklist for me. commit to the bit is a crime under certain conditions, and this is one of them.

🍩 for Vaska, Vaathu, and Adelita; 🍻 for Zora, Bridget, and Eilidh; 🍟 for Bryn, Dagnal, and Roxanne?
Answers under a cut!
🍩: What's a crime your OC is most likely to commit? What's a crime they're most likely to get arrested for?
Vaska: Assault and mugging easily. Likely caught for assault. She's working on it though. Kinda.
Vaathu: Well she used to mug people, but now she's a reformed pirate, so it's just assisting in thievery now.
Adelita: Assault of an officer. Granted it's usually just one hit before running.
🍻: What's your OC's favourite comfort ritual? How do they calm themselves down after a rough day?
Zora: Sketching her surroundings and her girlfriends. If it's been a taxing social day, she tries meditating for a bit once she's settled.
Bridget: Honestly, both just spending time by the ocean, listening to the waves, and enjoying a drink in a rowdy pub are her favorite ways to wind down.
Eilidh: Meditating is her comfort ritual. No noise, and if she can be in a park or something that's better.
🍟: What does your OC admit to be their guilty pleasure? What actually is their guilty pleasure?
Bryn: She'll say that sleeping in is her guilty pleasure, but there's no guilt when she tries to convince Yelkha to stay in bed just a little. It's actually eating fowl bones. She enjoys the crunch but Yelkha's wince.
Dagnal: She'll dodge the answer by saying that in order to have a guilty pleasure you must first feel guilt. It's simply enjoying some elven wine.
Roxanne: Getting woken up by Coaxoch. Sometimes she'll wake up before Coaxoch and will go back to sleep just to get woken up by her. Also being the center of a threesome or more with her girlfriends but you knew that one already

Tumblr has a “yes and” culture that’s unlike anything I’ve ever seen online. I don’t think a single “Goncharov” post I’ve seen contradicts another, and the bandwagoning on “plot points” is incredible. Smooth as sharkskin, one might say.
