Aredhel is surprised at the question, and takes a moment to gather her thoughts before answering. She sighs, as if it is the first time she has spoken of such things in a long while. It is painful to draw up memories of how she thought their life together would be, when first they were wed. It took her a long while in the Halls to forgive herself for not having been able to predict how things would change, how he would change, or perhaps for not seeing him for what he was from the outset.
“Some claim he seduced me through spellcraft alone, but that is...an exaggeration. He certainly used spells to lead me to him, and later to keep me within the bounds of his forest, but you may find it surprising to learn that there were many things I loved about him, once.
I delighted in the lilt of his voice as he told me how Beleriand had been before the sun, and I loved the way he would point out the patterns the stars made in the sky as we walked in the forest at night. He was a talented smith, and yet different from all of the smiths I knew, for he had not learned at Aule’s forges like the Noldor. But when he spoke of his craft, there was not only passion in his voice, but pride for every technique he had discovered, for every project he had worked on in collaboration with the Dwarves. It seemed to me that he felt more kinship with them than he ever had with the elves of Doriath.
Despite his friendship with the Dwarves, though, he was fiercely independent - tied to no Oaths or the governance of any kingdom. I admired him for his self-sufficiency, his determination. And at the beginning, it was...exciting that it was just him, and the forest, and me. No bickering cousins, no politics among lords, no responsibilities but for ourselves - our interests, our dreams, our pleasures. I thought the kind of solitude Eol had, the kind of solitude we had together in those early days, was what I wanted.
