Humanity takes itself too seriously. It is the world's original sin. If the caveman had known how to laugh, history would have been different.

The spontaneous child that got squashed so many years ago struggles to be released. The pressure to be adult helps to keep the child repressed. You are at war with yourself. But fear of the unknown wins out. After all, what would happen if that child gained freedom. What would it mean. So you rationalize.
Having fun, being silly, being childlike, is being foolish. It is no wonder that adult children of alcoholics have difficulty having fun. Life is too serious.
Janet Geringer Woititz, Adult Children of Alcoholics

Camp is art that proposes itself seriously, but cannot be taken altogether seriously because it is “too much.” Titus Andronicus and Strange Interlude are almost Camp, or could be played as Camp.
Susan Sontag, "Notes on “Camp”"

Nobody else has used jokes in a spiritual way; hence sometimes people are shocked. When they come for the first time to listen to me, naturally they are shocked because they want to hear something very serious—as if they are not serious enough already! They want to hear something esoteric, something nonsensical, something which makes no sense to them; then they think there must be great meaning in it. When something is incomprehensible to them they think this is great philosophy! Whenever they come across something written in stupid jargon, esoteric, occult, spiritual, they become very much interested. They think they are going to find some treasure in it. The treasure is not hidden in big words, the treasure is hidden in you. And it is to be discovered, not through big words, it is to be discovered through wordlessness, it is to be discovered through silence. And haven’t you felt after deep laughter that a sudden silence comes to you in the wake of it?—the silence after a storm. For a moment it is as if the mind stops functioning… you are utterly relaxed, in a deep rest. Those are the moments when you start feeling the presence of God. Those are the first glimpses that God is. There is no other proof.
— Osho (The Dhammapada: The Way of the Buddha, Vol. 12)

"I believe in colour. If you're going to do anything in the way of the illusory dance, let's live it up! Let's really do it. And let's not take ourselves so damn seriously that we have to be scrubbed all the time of any kind of ornamentation or frivolity. Now, hooray!"
— Alan Watts

Do not talk about giftedness, inborn talents! One can name great men of all kinds who were very little gifted. They acquired greatness, became “geniuses” (as we put it), through qualities the lack of which no one who knew what they were would boast of: they all possessed that seriousness of the efficient workman which first learns to construct the parts properly before it ventures to fashion a great whole; they allowed themselves time for it, because they took more pleasure in making the little, secondary things well than in the effect of a dazzling whole.

Never take yourself too seriously. None of us is getting out of this alive. So laugh. Enjoy living. Like my Stunt Double du Jour, don't let a little rain dampen your spirits!

I was reviewing the content for tomorrow morning's livestream and it got me really really really seeing that you have to totally disregard an outsider's view of yourself sometimes. Like, I'll be touching on being balanced between the polarity of playfulness and seriousness. And I was noticing how strong my playful nature is. I am definitely a 'work hard/play hard' type of person. But I'm not aware of anyone ever having that impression of me. I tend to come off as mostly serious or diligent.
But that's really not me. I can definitely go down on the level of a 2 year and play with them easily. I follow a lot of the same instincts that a child does. I have the highest respect for my childhood self. I do what makes her happy. Even in childhood I began to establish discipline for myself, and that's what helped me nurture the other side of myself. I would know when I had to sit down and learn something, and when I could let myself have free-time. What some could've seen as me becoming scheduled was learning to find my personal balance.
Had I not had this inner awareness of myself, I could've adopted what other people think of me. I'd feel that I need to take more breaks and lower my expectations for myself. Basically, I would have forced myself into more play, and shirked off work as much. And the true result of that would be a weaker sense of self-achievement and lower expression of my creative forces.
So, it's always good to know yourself outside of what people think of you too. Sometimes it's easy to feel that an outsider may have a better perspective of us. And that's why we consult other people in our personal issues. But it's also very important to know your experience of things and value that too. Inner work is really about this extraction of what intelligence is held in our inner experience.
