First organized by disability advocates in Washington state two years ago, the "Week Without Driving" transportation challenge has gone national.
Driving the news: This year, Disability Rights Washington (DRW), Disability Mobility Initiative, America Walks and more than 120 other advocacy groups joined efforts to bring this week's challenge to 35 states, as well as Canada and Puerto Rico.
Why it matters: The challenge, started by DRW in 2021, is intended to give people an idea of how hard routine travel can be when you can't drive or don't have a car.
This is an everyday issue for nearly a third of Americans, including people with disabilities, young people, seniors and people who can't afford cars or gas, according to DRW.
The idea behind the challenge, advocates say, is to get those involved in transportation policy to experience what being carless is like firsthand.
Details: Participation is simple. Don't drive at all this week — not to work, doctor appointments, errands or even taking family and friends to activities.
Yes, it's hard! That's the point, says DRW.
You can ask someone else for a ride or use ride-hailing apps or taxis if they exist where you need to go, but DRW encourages you to note the cost and how that would impact you if this was your only option.
Of note: This isn't a disability simulation or a test of how easily you can find alternatives, said DRW organizers. People who can afford to live in walkable areas well served by transit or who can afford to outsource driving, deliveries and errands will have an easier time.
"The challenge isn't about not using a car — rather, it's to see what it's like to not be the one able to drive, to better understand what it's like to try to navigate their communities without the privilege of driving," Anna Zivarts of Disability Rights Washington told Axios.
Dozens of elected officials from across the state are participating, including King County Councilmembers Claudia Balducci and Jeanne Kohl-Welles.

Nothing is worse for human solidarity than the insistence that every single human rights talking point has to be separated into micro-factions. It happens in every facet of human rights discourse.
They say that every minority group has to fight for their rights separately, but the thing is our struggles aren’t as separate as many people would have your think.
The only solution is to fight ageism, sexism, racism, and all those kyriarchal isms no matter who it’s against. Yes, that means abandoning the notion that minorities other than those in your own group are undermining your activism and perspective by attempting to apply it to their own situation. Separatism like that does not earn you points from the people who are oppressing you. You’re not helping them. you’re not helping yourself. But you are helping the bigoted elite keep you and others down.

Groups say Ontario long-term care law violates Charter rights - The Globe and Mail
Advocacy groups for seniors and public health care have filed a court challenge of Ontario legislation that allows crowded hospitals to force some elderly patients to accept places at nursing homes without their consent – or face $400-a-day fines.

Sorry but I’m just not going to pay attention to some of the bad kids’ canon heights. Some of them are listed as too damn tall (and Gorgug has 100 percent grown since freshman year) so have 80 million headcanons
Like you’re telling me Riz is supposed to be 4’4”?? That’s a tall ass goblin! That’s too big to be reasonably carted around on the others’ shoulders, no no, I’m making the executive decision to draw him as 3’9” - 3’11” from now on and you can’t stop me. I’d give him another inch or two by college and that’s it.
Kristen being 5’11”? NAH She’s 5’6”. BIG 5’6” energy right there.
Adaine and Fig didn’t have their heights listed on the wiki but I’m thinking Adaine is 5’10” and Fig is 5’4”. Or Fig is also 5’10” ish and takes after Gorthalax idk but I’m leaning towards short Fig.
Fabian can actually stay same as canon at 6’1”. Maybe grow an inch or two since freshman year but honestly his still works. He’s a year older than the others, prolly grew a little earlier and plateaued early-mid sophomore year, half-elf youth look and all that. I think he lied in introductions freshman year and was about 5’11” - 6’0” and grew over the year before the others could notice the discrepancy.
And Gorgug. Gorgug. You’re telling me he reached 6’4” in freshman year and didn’t keep growing?? Mother fucker he has to have hit at LEAST one growth spurt since, puberty does not hit that early in boys that he was done growing at 14/15. I’m thinking 6’8” or so by Junior Year so far, maybe another couple inches before graduating, maybe not.

Housing Minister France-Élaine Duranceau refused to improve the "Loi Françoise David" aimed at better protecting seniors from eviction, despite amendments tabled by Québec solidaire (QS) and the Parti québécois (PQ) on Tuesday.
According to Duranceau, her bill already contains several measures to protect people from evictions, regardless of age.
In 2016, Françoise David -- then a QS MNA for Gouin -- unanimously passed the "Act to amend the Civil Code to protect the rights of senior tenants." The law prevents a landlord from evicting seniors aged 70 and over who have occupied their dwelling for at least 10 years and whose income is equivalent to or below the maximum threshold to qualify for social housing.

just saw a post by goobiestar where tigerclaw has been put on babysitting duty and they doodled him surrounded by tiny babies thinking "i cant believe bluestar is making me babysit a bunch of drooling pathetic whiny pieces of--" and with bonefall tigerstar being a genuinely good dad (at least when his babies were tiny) i have this image in my head of firepaw imagining this is what's happening and then it cuts to tigerclaw calmly playing teeterstrike with the babies
I'm telling a super different story from the other guys in my orbit LMAO, I've noticed that also. A lot of my.... fellow satellites? Companion Comets. Peripheral Planets. Lean into the comedy angle of Tigerclaw being a nasty little boy
I especially love that one comic (I think it's Blimbo?) Where he sees his younger sibs and just starts kitty-smacking them like a real cat lmao. Top tier. If the punchline is "KITTY SMACK" you'll kill me every time.
But yah BB!Tigerclaw is really important to understand as like... a guy. Just a shitty guy, has some good things about him, but ultimately the darkness within him is run-of-the-mill. He isn't special. Firestar comes to understand that any one of the dozens of assholes in his life could have become Tigerstar-- and that's TERRIFYING.
Evil is mundane and common. Goodness is complicated and unique.
So your image is spot on lmao. Young Fireheart watching him from across camp like, "ill PROVE his evil to bluestar. Look at him now. What is he doing with swiftkit. Something horrible im sure. He probably hates kittens"
And Tigerclaw is pressing his mouth to Swiftkit's baby belly and going PTHHHBBBBB.

the constant temptation is to write a fic where cdream is doing Really Bad post-prison.  worse than i usually write him.  like, truly bedridden for a while.  and then get into the nitty gritty details of what it means to care for someone like that

Its crazy that the US healthcare system still continues in its current form
No it’s SO BROKEN… I have been behind the scenes several times and it’s like wow. The people running these places really do have the passion and enthusiasm of someone who’s been working an office job for 60 years. This genuinely keeps me up at night bc I’m scared that as I grow up / get closer to becoming a neurosurgeon, I’ll lose more and more of my humanity and just become another hospital drone who sees lives as a chore more than like??? Literally humans in need of immediate help???? I def wish things were different but I absolutely intend to be loud where healthcare advocacy is concerned bc I would not stand being complicit in such a dysfunctional system
