I finally finished the War Phase design for my FE3H self-insert, Catarina! ..And proceeded to throw together a slightly intimidating render of her, haha. You certainly wouldn't want to meet this noblewoman on the battlefield - her skill with swords is matched only by her speed and her spellcasting prowess!

FE3H was released four years ago yesterday, although I myself only really got into it just over a year ago. Still, I'm really glad I did, because it's such a fun game to play and I've also enjoyed how I've been able to fit my self-insert into it! And now that I've finalised her other design - technically I could also make her one for Three Hopes, but I don't have that game - I can maybe try and make some selfship renders with my two romantic F/Os from the game!!~

This isn't much of an outright render, and I also haven't set my tag list back up yet (though I do have a plan for that), but if anyone has any comments on the design, you're more than welcome to say so!! I hope you like it ^-^

Hmm.. I was playing FE3H earlier, so I think I will talk about Catarina (my self-insert for that game) for these, if that's alright!

3. Who in canon is she closest to? Who would she drop everything to come help, if anyone? Who’s the person she's least close to? Who would she most likely not get along with, if anyone? - This is would probably depend a bit on route! However, Catarina is not generally someone who gets overly close to people, as a rule. An exception to that rule which is independent of route would be the other Ashen Wolves, particularly Hapi and Yuri. In terms of her dynamics when recruited into other houses.. she'd be closest with Petra and Dorothea out of the Black Eagles, Felix and Dedue out of the Blue Lions, and Claude and either Lysithea or Marianne out of the Golden Deer. The first character listed from each house would be the one she gets closest to dropping everything for, though she isn't really often the type to do that in all honesty. Examples of people she does not like would include anyone too in favour of the Church (for example Rhea or Catherine - note that this is about the Church specifically, not necessarily the goddess in her own right, which is part of why she and Marianne can get on). She also generally finds it tricky to get along with loud overzealous people like Caspar or Raphael for example, though that's less of an outright dislike and is more simply because they are very different from how she likes to be. Overly egotistical people like a couple of the other nobles can also get on her nerves sometimes.

9. Her favourite foods? Colours? Activities? What does she enjoy in life? How does she express her joy for things she likes? - Catarina's favourite food is something unspecified from her homeland that doesn't really appear in Fódlan (i.e. homemade pizza), while her favourite colours are black, green, teal, and purple. In terms of activities, she enjoys studying plants and flowers, and reading in general, as well as practising her sword and magic techniques. She enjoys being left to her own activities, and greatly prefers warm conditions to cold ones (to the point that when writing hypothetical lines she would have if she was in the game, she’s one of the only people who doesn’t complain about Ailell being really hot, because I thought that’d be amusing). She's not the most excitable person by a long shot, but she will still definitely express her gratitude for things she likes in a graceful manner, especially in situations where she doesn't normally get that opportunity or it's being directly offered by someone else. For example, she doesn't like very many foods, so the rare occasions when there's something she enjoys on the menu - or her friends offer to swap food with her so she can get more of the parts of a meal she can eat, without making a big fuss of it - really mean a lot to her. It's a rare opportunity to see her normal colder demeanour become something a lot softer and outwardly appreciative, because she is genuinely very appreciative of things like that.

10. Her least favourites? What doesn't she enjoy in life? How does she deal with being presented with things she doesn't like? - Catarina doesn't deal well with lots of people being around all at once, or loud overzealous people in general. This would be exemplified in-game by one of her potential lost items being a pair of fluffy earmuffs that she sometimes uses to not be as overwhelmed by lots of loud noises. She's also quite sensitive to strong smells and dislikes a lot of them for giving her a headache, which is part of why she doesn't like a lot of foods served in the dining hall as well as why she never hangs around near the stables. She very much isn’t one for a lot of typical “noble lady” hobbies, like riding horses or makeup or overly extravagant fashion to give some examples. When faced with people she dislikes, she generally isn't afraid to make it clear what she thinks of them with her words, sometimes really rather bitingly - for example, she dislikes a lot of authority figures that have simply been granted their titles or ranks according to tradition or inheritance, rather than actually proving why they are a good fit for their role and subsequently earning their position of authority, if that makes sense. Part of this also comes from the fact that she's quite confident in her combat abilities because she practices a lot, so while she isn't exactly boastful by any stretch, she's very much not a hypocrite if calling someone out for being all talk and no action, or something.

I hope that all of this is alright and makes sense! Catarina's one of the self-inserts I feel is most closely linked to my own personality, or certainly some of how I used to try to be, so.. sometimes it can be tricky to explain how she acts because of that? Still, thank you very much once again for sending in these questions - it means a lot!! ^-^

Send a 🌟 + name and I’ll talk about my self-insert’s bond to that character! - I'll do this in relative order of closeness, if that's alright~

So, first of all, we have Hapi, who.. Catarina does definitely have a very close bond with, by virtue of Hapi being one of my romantic F/Os. The two share a lot of opinions on things, though I would say that Catarina is not quite as apathetic as Hapi tends to be - even so, the two enjoy each other's company greatly, as both of them feel that they can just be themselves and not have to worry about things when the other is around. I think it would take some time for Hapi to trust her with knowledge of her sigh, but when she does, the fact that Catarina responds with wanting to find ways to adapt to it (e.g. taming the monsters), instead of just ways of mitigating it (e.g. killing the monsters), stands out a lot to Hapi and is a strong catalyst for the pair really becoming closer.

Next, I think I would say Catarina gets on best with Yuri, because the two have a number of comparable personality traits - in fact, even their Crests have the same effect in-game, in that they prevent enemies from counterattacking. I'm also thinking of tying part of her backstory to his, in that both of them ended up in Abyss for the same reason/as part of the same incident (since Yuri was also in the Blue Lions house, which is where Catarina would also have been placed initially - and his retailation at what his group were asked to do would most likely have been something she supported him on). So, all these similarities are what lead the two to have a strong bond of friendship.

Following this is Balthus, who is not generally the sort of person Catarina enjoys the company of very much, given his more rowdy personality. However, they actually have a closer bond than might be expected, because Balthus first attended the Officers' Academy in the same year as her older half-brother, Tobias. The two of them (plus Holst) had a fierce friendship, even despite Holst and Balthus being Golden Deer whereas Tobias was a Blue Lion, so Balthus knows a bit more about Catarina's younger self than the others as a result - and sometimes struggles to see her as any older than she was when he went to school with her brother, which leads him to both be caring towards her and also sometimes be unintentionally belittling.

Finally, we have Constance! I wouldn't say that Catarina and Constance dislike each other by any means, it's just that she gets on least well with her compared to the other three. Constance has a habit of turning everything into a competition, particularly when it comes to unconventional magics, whereas Catarina does not enjoy being competitive whatsoever. So, this can leave her rather exasperated at her. Even so, there can definitely be moments where the two are able to bounce off of each other very effectively and get on brilliantly - it's just generally a case of whether Catarina's bluntness clashes with or act as a fun foil to Constance's theatrics.

So who usually does the teasing (in a sibling–like way of course)? And how does the other react? Is it becoming a back and forth or is the other party too flustered to fight back? @nimue-hidden-lake

Felix: "Oh, that's absolutely Catarina. Not that you'd probably call her the type to tease - not when comparing her to some of my friends, at least - but she has certainly got it in her. I don't even know if you'd call it teasing, but.. it's the way she just bites back with some sort of answer, any time you say something that's either wrong or that she can counter somehow. She's so quick to retort with some- cutting response or other, it's kind of ridiculous how perfectly she does it at this point!

And she doesn't even do it all the time, either - only when she can actually prove her point. I admire it about her a lot, don't get me wrong - it's just not always fun to be on the receiving end of if I'm already in a bad mood, you know? At least she knows when to drop it, though.. And quite often, we do end up sending things back-and-forth pretty well. Usually in the middle of training, actually. Her tongue's almost sharper than her sword work, but we're both pretty evenly-matched at this point - in wits as well as blades.

Mmm.. Yeah, I'd say there were lots of things! One is the way that she talks about stuff. Cat's not the kind of girl who just pretends to put up with stuff when she hates it - she'll just say it to you straight that she's not happy with it, and bring up why, too. It's just refreshing, you know? She's not a people-pleaser, but she's also not just mean for the sake of it or anything. And because she's so blunt about the things she doesn't like, you can be a lot more sure of what she does like. ..Like me. Which is nice.

Other than that, uh - well, the clue's in the nickname, honestly. Kitty-Cat's way more tactile than she looks to most people, especially when she's tired, soooo we tend to kinda crash out with each other after battles or training. It's a good reminder that we're back somewhere safe. We put some beanbags and blankets and cushions and stuff in our old classroom, just for when we're all hanging out together down in Abyss, and you'd be surprised how much the two of us get to just chill out and be cosy together, either there or back in our room. It's so nice! And it's comfy in both senses of the word. Also, Cat's the only person I know who can still look intimidating while curled up in a ball and looking up at you from the middle of a beanbag. Y'know, just like cats do sometimes? Coco doesn't count, she never sits in them. Yuribird just lounges on top of them like a chair. And B's never intimidating.

Kinda like this, I guess, except her legs are usually sticking out behind her.

It's kind of impressive.

But, I guess the biggest thing is.. again, it goes back to her logic. You know about my sigh, of course, but.. As soon as I let slip to Kitty-Cat about it, she immediately started thinking about whether there was any way to tame the monsters I could summon. Most of the time, people just insist they'd be happy to help take stuff down, if I made it appear. Which is fine! But there's a difference between that - that kind of "if you do this we'll help you clear it up, and make it look like nothing ever happened in the first place" - and what she said. 'Cause what she said is more like.. "if you do this we'll find a way to make it work for us". And the fact she'd want to do that is.. it's just really heartwarming, you know? Like I'd never be alone and stuck with a problem I can't solve.

Yesterday (the 26th of July) was the fourth anniversary of Three Houses, but instead of finally working more on the timeskip design for my self-insert (Catarina), I managed to get around to designing my TWEWY self-insert instead (who is basically an AU version of Aria).

Today (the 27th of July) is the anniversary of the first TWEWY game, even though TWEWY!Aria only appears in the second game and I also didn’t know this until after I’d made that design yesterday. So, clearly, the best way to commemorate this anniversary today would be to finish my Three Houses self-insert design =P

I just have to get around to it

Felix: “Taking some time off from your usual expeditions, are we? Well, it’s good to see you in good spirits.

To answer your first question, that.. took a bit of time. You know what I was like back at the academy, after all. I didn’t actually get to meet Catarina until partway through the year, since it was only then that we ended up in the same house, but.. I’ll admit she caught my attention pretty quickly. She’s never trained as often as me, but we ended up arranging to spar together a lot, and that’s really how things got started. I’d say we have quite similar ways of fighting, so that common ground helped us to build up a connection, and then.. we started talking about other things than training, somehow. I suppose it was just- refreshing, to have someone around who had such an outside perspective. She may have roots in Faerghus, but the fact she wasn’t raised there, or raised to uphold the same typical values the Kingdom prides itself on - or even anywhere else in Fódlan - meant that.. there’s a lot I felt I could talk to her about, in a way I just couldn’t with others. Also, she wouldn’t hesitate to give me a piece of her mind, or say what she thought about things. Not many others were like that, so it stuck out to me.

By the end of the year, it didn’t feel like we had developed the same dynamic I have with my friends - and I wouldn’t necessarily say it was any worse or better, it’s just.. there was something different about it. Maybe it’s because it was just something shared between the two of us, not a piece of a larger group setting. A closeness that almost seemed more natural, or permanent, than just friendship, even despite the much shorter time we’d actually known each other. What I mean by that is that.. Rina and I can talk about anything, and it’d never feel like what we had could just suddenly fall apart, no matter what we actually said to each other. In fact, I don’t know if we’ve ever fallen out in a serious way; we may bicker a lot over little things, but it’s always more playful than anything else - never as tense or able to suddenly escalate as it could be with others. So, that’s.. really where the whole “sister” thing started.

Oh, and for your second question - we still train together, a lot. Catarina prides herself on being a difficult opponent to strike, and I’m very familiar with that by this point, but it doesn’t make it that much easier to get a hit in on her. Sometimes it can feel like I’m fighting a mirage of myself when she’s more on the offensive, which.. is a strange feeling, but I think it’s good. She also keeps trying to help me with the magic side of things, which usually results in her taking a pile of books out of the library and dragging me somewhere to go read them with her until one of us gets bored. ..I’ll admit that seeing her own spellcraft in action has helped me gain a greater appreciation of magic than I used to have, but I’m still not close to her own proficiency. Then again, I know I’d overpower her if she wasn’t using magic, so me having greater physical strength can still be more useful than her balanced and more agile style. And, the magic I do know how to cast is already far above what most swordsmen could use or expect from me, so I still have the edge in most combat situations, even without being an expert.

I do find it very amusing that two of my more cold and stoic self-inserts - who are actually pretty similar in some ways, being nobles in a somewhat unfamiliar situation compared to the nobles around them for example - are for two of the F/Os who manage to make me most flustered simply by existing (or saying certain lines, more specifically)

actually you know what while I remember

I have now officially added.. *checks the carrd* SEVEN new familial F/Os to my carrd! ..All of which are my own OCs, haha.

In no particular order, we have:

Tobias and Charlotte, who are FE3H OCs I created to be my self-insert Catarina's older (half-)siblings! They would appear as part of her Paralogue and then also be the people in charge of the Battalions you get from successfully completing that Paralogue; not super major characters, but an important aspect of Catarina's own theme of family. Charlotte is a Falcon Knight but also went to the Royal School of Sorcery in Fhirdiad and still currently lives in Faerghus, while Tobias is a gauntlets user (maybe a War Master?) who went to the Officers Academy as a Blue Lion, so probably also would still stay in Faerghus as well. Their tags are going to be "sister: azure stormrider (charlotte)" and "brother: indigo gauntlets (tobias)" respectively!

Ruby, who as previously mentioned (quite recently in fact) is my fankid for my selfship with Pyra. I still don't have a tag for her yet, but she's on the carrd now, since I hadn't done that prior to now!

Mistral, Rime, and Virga, who are my fankids for my selfship with Aqua! Specifically, they're a trio of Keyblade wielders apprenticed to Aqua, but we very much have a familial dynamic with all three (as shown by their names all being types of weather phenomena, reflecting Aqua and Aria's names meaning "water" and "air" respectively). For reference, Mistral's tag is "son: masterly gales (mistral)", Rime's tag is "child: feathered frost (rime)", and Virga's tag is "child: raining skyfall (virga)". I'm still in the process of figuring out each of their characters, but having their names finalised is definitely helping with that!

And finally, yet another fankid, Sophie! She is my fankid for my selfship with Skye, because.. I forgot you can canonically have a child in his game, haha. I still haven't figured out a tag for her yet, but.. she exists now! And maybe one day I'll have a save file with her in it, as well.

So, yeah, that's all those! I might possibly use some of my remaining sparkles to talk about some of them if that's alright, just so that a) every sparkle ask from that batch has been for a different OC or version of an OC that I selfship with in some way, and b) I get to have fun developing each of their characters more. Or, if anyone has any specific questions, they're welcome to ask those as well!

To address each of your points in turn: I didn’t actually plan on her hair mirroring her outfit, so well done for spotting that unintentional detail! The hair was the first thing I started with, actually - I wanted something that looked sufficiently different to Catarina’s pre-timeskip hairstyle, but the idea of her wearing her hair up just didn’t really feel enough like me (since.. I almost never wear mine up because it’s barely long enough to do so, haha). For the style I ended up going with, I thought the wildness of it kind of fit with Catarina’s overall theme of not being a particularly noble or proper noble lady, in some ways at least.

Regarding her outfit, it’s intended to look similar to what her in-game “canon class” would be, since a lot of the in-game characters have outfits that resemble class ones (Yuri dresses like a Trickster, Constance dresses like a Dark Flier, I think Dorothea dresses like a Warlock, and so on). In Catarina’s case, her canon class in-game would be Mortal Savant, because she’s so good with both swords and reason magic (yes I made up stats for her) - so, I tried to add details to her outfit like the draping sleeves and ribbon belt and loose culottes that would create parallels with what Mortal Savants wear in the game. I didn’t want to make her dress exactly like one, because in-game they strongly resemble samurai whereas Catarina is supposed to be from somewhere south of Fódlan that’s essentially Fire Emblem!Italy (since, well, I’m Italian!) - so instead, I tried to go with something that you can draw parallels from instead. Hopefully this does come across!

And as for the sword - I’m glad you like it, it does have a very nice design!! It’s actually specifically a sword called Festering Desire, which is originally from Genshin Impact - I haven’t played that game for a while now, and didn’t play it when the sword itself was actually made available through an event story, but I’ve always really loved its lore and its appearance. I thought the purple would make it go well with Catarina’s outfit, which is why I used it for that render, but I also used it because I went to a convention last week and managed to find a necklace of the same sword for sale there! I wasn’t expecting to find anything referencing it at all, let alone an actual metal necklace, but I’m really glad I bought it ^-^ this is what it looks like!

This is a render I made.. sometime near the start of summer, I think! It’s essentially a screenshot redraw (albeit it’s a render, not a drawing), replicating a scene from the Cindered Shadows story with my self-insert, Catarina, in place of the character who’s normally doing this betrayal bit. I spent a while working on this and trying to get it as close to the in-game cutscene art as I could, and I like to think it turned out looking pretty good in the end!! ^-^

Petra is the princess of the archipelago nation of Brigid, sent to Fódlan as a guest of the Adrestian Empire. Catarina is the daughter of a powerful noble family in an unnamed nation outside of Fódlan, sent to the Officers' Academy to make connections but was forced to hide down in Abyss after taking the blame for an assassination attempt on Archbishop Rhea.

The two are not especially close during their shared time at the academy, but reunite unexpectedly after five years have passed and war is being waged, and start to become close after initially bonding through both not being from Fódlan. Petra helps Catarina train for physical combat, while Catarina supports Petra on the battlefield with her magical capabilities. Eventually, as the war nears its end, Petra and Catarina realise they are in love with each other, and become a couple; in their shared ending, Petra returns to lead Brigid with Catarina by her side, and eventually marries her.

This selfship only begins after the in-game timeskip, and takes place in a different version of events to my selfship with Hapi.

13. if you’ve had any F/O(s) for longer a year, did you find out anything new and surprising about them this year? Did this change your relationship change in any way? - I found out that Luna doesn't get permanently killed off, if that counts!! Which.. didn't technically change anything in our relationship because I was already changing that bit of the story in my favour anyway, but it was still very good to find out once Reborn's final episode released back in.. either April or May. Oh, and I also found out Reborn has a timeskip in it, which I was surprised to learn since I didn't expect it (although given I knew there'd be a Celebi quest, maybe I should have), but it was really fun getting to see all the characters' appearances after 10 years pass for them, once I got to that point in my own playthrough. Luna having cat ear headphones after that timeskip was definitely a surprise, but a very great one (as it means we can now canonically wear them together and be matching and I thought that would be cute ^-^)

15. did you find out anything new and surprising about yourself through selfshipping this year? - Umm.. all that's coming to mind is that I am still, in fact, able to form crushes on new male characters (in this instance, Grusha from Pokémon), and the two that I currently romantically selfship with (N and Skye) aren't characters I have feelings for just because I've known about them and played their source games since I was much younger? I've always been very unwilling to specify my sexuality using any terms more specific than "sapphic", because I wasn't sure how my feelings worked in their entirety; I just knew I liked girls, so to speak. It's, in that time, a term I've come to associate with myself rather strongly, so I will still continue to identify as it rather than anything more specific for that reason. But, catching romantic feelings for a character who wasn't female hadn't happened to me until 2022, so finding out that was still something that could happen came as a surprise.

16. did you pick up a new piece of media because of an F/O this year? - Yes, actually! Specifically, it was Fire Emblem: Three Houses, because I had started to selfship with Petra and Hapi (and had started to work on my self-insert for that game, Catarina) before I actually got a chance to play the game myself, though I had seen two of the routes already. I got lucky in finding a physical copy in a game shop on the same day that Three Hopes came out, so I had to make sure I didn't accidentally get the wrong one, but it all worked out and I proceeded to gain 100 hours of playtime on it in what felt like very little time, haha. It's a fun game!~
