I subscribed to Crunchy Roll to watch some BL animé, because it’s not really available to watch anywhere for free, and that’s primarily what I watched all day, yesterday.

I LOVE 💕 IT! I didn’t think I would enjoy animated bl series as much as live versions, but I AM!

So far I’ve watched:

Sekai Ichi Hatsukoi-

Junjo Romantica

The only problem with DAKAICHI was, there were some episodes (about 4 in total, out of 13), that only had subs in Spanish & Portuguese! Which was highly disappointing, since I don’t understand either of those languages, but upon skipping those episodes and continuing to watch the rest—I STILL thoroughly enjoyed it! Then I went back through those other episodes, with little understanding of any of the dialogue, to see what I had missed.

I’m sure it would have been more enjoyable to have been able to watch all episodes with Eng subs, but—oh, well!

And with Sekai Ichi Hatsukoi, the continuity is terrible, to the point that episodes seem out of order.

There are two seasons with 23 episodes in total.

Luckily, by subscribing through Amazon, I am getting the first two months at $1.99, each, because there isn’t a very big selection and I’ll probably have watched most, if not all, of the ones that sound the most interesting before the two months are up.

I LOVE how BL/yaoi anime work, started watching one and within the first episode our couple are already working together, found a convenient excuse to kiss (in this case demonstrating for a shojo manga author!), PLUS turns out the younger one doesn’t recognize the older bc he changed his name; the 2 of them hooked up in highschool 10 years earlier! THEN the older one swears he’ll make the younger one say he loves him again! AND THEN!!! TURNS OUT THE NEW APT THE YOUNG ONE MOVED INTO IS RIGHT NEXT TO THE OLDER ONE OH JEEZ. It’s like the Only One Bed trope cubed, so over the top that it’s absolutely perfect 🥰😎💯💯💯

Hello Siiri! First off: I just yelled in delight that you're offering subs on Ossan's Love Returns -- thank you! I have not watched the previous series or OL movie, but I come to you after learning that EarthMix will cameo in this week's episode. I'm watching older Thai BLs to learn more about that nation's genre of BL, and I'm learning about the Thai genre's Japanese BL roots -- which makes the cameo extra sweet for me in my history project. In any case, I am wondering if you could offer a kind of overview of the importance of the Ossan's Love franchise in Japan. My very favorite BL of all time is Kinou Nani Tabeta? -- and I've been so thrilled over the years to get TWO seasons, a movie, and the New Year's special. Ossan's Love has even more content. Would you say it's a bigger BL than KNT? Is the audience for OL growing actively in Japan? I'd love to learn more about the context of its importance in the Japanese media landscape. I feel like I generally have a grip on these things in part due to the fame of the various actors that end up in BLs (like in Cherry Magic), but Ossan's Love has been around for so long, that I'm not sure how to quite contextualize its popularity against other JBLs. I don't want to make any claims on who's more popular without gathering actual data, but I can talk about the general context of the show.

OL actually precedes Nanitabe's live action, so they weren't in competition during their original airing. OL differs from most other bl live action outputs by being an original script. It's not based on a manga unlike pretty much all other Japanese bls out there, and as such, it pretty much single-handedly brought gay relationships to the mainstream when they had so far been mostly confined to the bookshop bl section: if you wanted to read a bl, you'd go to the bl section, but otherwise you wouldn't be exposed to it.

The first season of OL aired in 2018. There are all kinds of live action bls airing these days, at least one per season, but it wasn't like that back in 2018. Live action bl until recently was either typical age-gap uke/seme anime (Gravitation, Sekai ichi hatsukoi, Junjou romantica) or made-for-dvd movies with mostly unknown actors. My first bl movie was Ai no kotodama. I don't know who those actors were or where they are now. By comparison, the cast of OL is full of popular mainstream actors. Pretty sure at least one person fainted when Tanaka Kei was on the cover of An an's love & sex (was it me, you'll never know!).

Even now, at lot of the bl you'll find on Gaga or Viki actual airs in a specific bl slot or on a paid subscription service. You had to buy each episode of Old fashion cupcake on Rakuten to watch - meaning you need to already know what you're looking for. Nanitabe and Cherry Magic both aired in TV Tokyo's Friday midnight slot , but TV Tokyo is a local network. I had to watch both online because we don't get TV Tokyo in the prefectures. What we do get though is TV Asahi, the network producing OL. It's one of the major national networks and the second most viewed channel after Nippon TV (it's also the channel buying GMMTV shows for Japanese distribution).

What made OL such a phenomenon was the internet and social media. It was the most tweeted show in 2018 and Japanese people tweet a lot. It received the Popular Word of the Year Award. You read it right, Ossan's Love was the Popular Word of the Year 2018 with #MeToo and e-sports (for comparison: in 2022 one of the words was state funeral because of Abe's assassination, and one of last year's winners was boiling of the planet).

As for how OL Returns is doing - it's super successful! Last Friday even omutsu paatonaa/diaper partner was trending on the internet. Last time there was an update about viewership, the first two episodes had been viewed 4.5 million times. The Japanese fandom is super active, and people of all ages are watching. They're doing quite a bit of promo, too. Tanaka Kei & Hayashi Kento were on Geinoujin kakuzuke check, a popular new year's quiz show.

I know OL doesn't get a lot of love in western bl fandom. On one hand, I'm like huh okay fair enough. But on the other, much bigger, you could even say enormous, hand, I'm like you don't have all the facts! You don't even speak Japanese! Take a seat! But if you wanna trash the airline remake (was it really necessary???), I'll bring the snacks.

HATSUNE MIKU???? if you dont like this then project diva. ichi's favorite unit is l/n sakis is a tie between wxs and mmj hona's is niigo and shiho says hers is vbs (its mmj).

mmj: animal crossing. you know airi has the most insane island. haruka has a penguin shrine and as many penguin villagers as she can get her hands on. minori catches bugs. shizuku never got past the tutorial.

vbs: tloz. yes they were the last group to get an assignment yes i needed tloz on this list therefore it goes to vbs. imagine it was a multiplayer series. but i do think they'd like the sense of adventure and cool swords and something with destiny and partnership and the drive to overcome. toya is the best at it and likes the older games. kohane started on botw and loved it. got good fast. an likes the old ds games bc she'd play em in middle school and akito just plays what toya does.

wxs: pokemon !!!!!!!! POKEMON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! its about happiness and friendship and creatures and stories and hope and CREATURES. you can't tell me they dont have doubles battles every other weekend. nene has a primarily water type team that's overall pretty balanced. rui uses abilities and trick strategies. emu finds the cute things that hit HARD (tinkaton, bewear). and tsukasa chooses the coolest looking ones.

niigo: omori. im not the first person to say this and i will not be the last. thinking mizuki streams it on call once and then they just made a thing out of it. k likes this so she can just listen to the music. ena likes the art style. mafuyu was the only one not to scream when they got to experiment 667.

So I’m now caught up with The World's Greatest First Love: The Case of Ritsu Onodera / Sekai-ichi Hatsukoi ~

OMG I watched this anime -years- ago (only the first two seasons, not the movies), I barely remember what happened but I remember liking it a lot so I was really excited to read the manga but I was expecting it to feel kind of old since it started in 2006 but I was pleasantly surprised that it aged pretty well!

(spoilers ahead)

I didn’t realize that Ritsu and Takano had sex throughout the entire manga WHAAAAAT HAHAHAHA I LAUGHED SO HARD because in the anime that doesn’t happen and I wasn’t expecting it AT ALL! Ritsu being like... ‘idk how I feel about him... I don’t know how this is going to work... he’s my boss...’ meanwhile in his BED, in his DREAMS, NAKED in his BATHTUB!! Hilarious!! I was expecting this super slow burn just waiting for a kiss (>▽<)

Ritsu is such an anxious mess most of the time, but I love his character a lot. Trying his best, wanting to be recognized for doing a good job all on his own without the help of his parents. Admirable.

On the other hand, Takano. This man is really something. Falling for his stalker, simping for 10+ years... putting it all out there just to be kind-of-sort-of-rejected again and again and again, lying about work related things in order to go on dates with Ritsu. And my favorite scene of all...

THE FUCKING BAND-AIDS!!! I’m not gonna lie, non-ironically, I thought that was super adorable!!!

I love Takano ♡ I didn’t like ch. 28 and a lot of smaller things, but he cares so much and just wants Ritsu’s love ~~~~ 

Him and the whole Emerald team being smooth with the ladies in the office, being known for being handsome, and just the overall all-male shoujo editing department is gold.

I also LOVE that Ritsu and Kisa are BFFs ☆ I wish they would talk more especially about their boyfriend problems (*´ ˘ `*)
