rwby’s queer representation.
opening out of the way, i’m a queer nonbinary bisexual & have been out for over a decade, blah blah, let’s get to the meat & potatoes of this post. i want this to be a fairly nuanced post but let me just be honest & say it’s not going to be kind to rooster teeth, rwby or mkek. if you don’t want to see that, scroll ahead.
the queer cast.
out of over 250+ named characters  —  while including the novels which has to happen to include half the rep on this list  —  we have “16″ queer characters ranging from confirmed to word of god. those are;
blake belladonna ; bisexual. appeared in 2012, however not confirmed in canon yet. was “confirmed” by writer eddy rivas in a reddit comment that didn’t really confirm it & has been pushed by her va arryn zech for years.
coco adel ; lesbian. appeared in 2014, was confirmed as a lesbian in the rwby novel after the fall in 2019.
ilia amitola ; lesbian. appeared in 2016, was confirmed as a lesbian in 2017 while confessing to a bound blake.
scarlet david ; gay. appeared in 2014, however he was confirmed in a non canon manga by miles on twitter to be gay in 2018.
sapphron & terra cotta arc ; unspecified wlw. appeared & were confirmed in 2019, however what sexuality they are is unconfirmed.
may marigold ; trans woman. appeared in 2019 & was said by her va to be trans in a tweet, this was further confirmed in 2020 in the episode war.
the noncanon / questionably canon queer characters we have are;
yang xiao long ; unspecified wlw. yang has been teased to be in a relationship with blake belladonna for the past half a decade & was confirmed to be attracted to men in the earlier volumes of the show. she has also been featured on pride merch both solely & related to the ship bumblby, yet with no canon confirmation of either her relationship or sexuality, she remains in the void.
team ndgo ; ace. this team was a fan creation submitted & used by crwby for the vytal tournament, their creators & va’s have said that they headcanon the girls as on the ace spectrum but that it’s not canon as they have no further creative control over them.
matte skye ; nonbinary. the va says that they headcanoned matte as nonbinary like themselves, but there has been no canon confirmation from any of the writers.
nolan porfirio ; unspecified mlm. the wiki says that nolan is gay, however there is no confirmed relationship between him & scarlet in the novels, nor is there any confirmed sexuality for him that has been put into the text itself.
mistral gays ; unspecified mlm. these were two background characters from the montage that took place during volume 5 in mistral. there is no confirmed sexuality for either of them but they are holding a heart shaped bamboo plant together for 2 seconds on screen.
taking away the non canon / questionably canon characters out of rwby’s queer roster; as they have not been confirmed by either the writers or on screen, canon material; this brings the number down to 7. meaning out of 250+ named characters in rwby, we have less than 10 that are queer. & out of them, they only fulfil 4(?) of the sexualities / genders in the queer community.
& then there is the question of if these characters are still on screen. out of the 7 confirmed queer characters we have, only 2 are still actively on screen or contributing to the plot; which are blake belladonna & may marigold.
the treatment.
scarlet & coco have been written off to the novel land until we potentially see them in vacuo, ilia was written off to go be with the white fang, & saphron / terra were only ever side characters who weren’t meant to feature more than the three episodes they did.
mkek + monty when he was still alive have been on record saying that “queer rep needs to be earned”, an inherently queerphobic statement considering not only the preferential treatment of mlw / heterosexual couples in the show that far outweigh queer couples with little to no development; but also because of the fact that 4 / 5ths of mmkek are straight men. the only queer writer is kiersi & her own writing about queer people is questionable at best & harmful at worst.
& i would be remiss not to mention the favouritism towards wlw in both terms of how representation is handled & what characters are given as representation. in the almost decade rwby has been running, mlm have had only scarlet as their representation while being continuously queerbaited or overlooked time & time again. while mkek realized how they didn’t want to contribute to the queerphobic trope of bury your gays by making pilot boi gay, miles was then also on record wishing that they had done it anyways because of how popular he’d become. miles was then also the one to talk about the potential of jaune, a popular character in the main cast, being queer before quickly shutting that down after the fact.
there have also been plenty of arguments back & forth about the queerbaiting during the fairgame situation; however the fact remains that eddy himself acknowledged it was queerbaiting & that the writing team regard sexualities as “spoilers” to be earned, before changing his statement. both clover & qrow were heavily coded as queer & as it is, neither have been confirmed & the former suffered the most gruesome, graphic death on the screen so far.
mkek have also spent almost half a decade teasing the potential couple of bumbleby, blake & yang; however they have gone back & forth on romantic moments for them while heterosexual couples like renora have been able to have far more development in less time to confirm their relationship. all the while, mkek & the company have seen fit to use the ship to promote merch & entice people into buying it; a queerphobic action & something that is the definition of queerbaiting.
on a final note; there is also definitely the issue of intersectionality when it comes to the queer representation in rwby. nonwhite representation in rwby is fairly problematic already, but when looking at the landscape of who is queer in rwby, it paints a very white, conventionally attractive picture with barely any poc or genderqueer people. the queer face in media is already very whitewashed, it would do rwby well to not further contribute to this alongside their other issues.
conclusion.
rwby has definitely never been at the forefront of queer representation, despite a fair amount of their fans being queer & just wanting to see that done well. with other shows now coming up behind them & overtaking in terms of genuine rep made by queer creators, all while fighting homophobic networks & people  —  something rt has never had to do as an independent company  —  it’s very clear that rwby isn’t even in 2000 & late anymore in terms of their queer characters, they’re in the 1500s comparatively.
they either need to do better by their queer fans or just admit that they don’t really care about us beyond the dollar signs they can see burning a hole in their pocket.

SHADOW’s Queer Coding
I first started exploring this idea of Sk8′s implicit queer rep (as in stuff other than explicit same sex intimacy) in this post.
I know we like to joke that Hiromi is the Token Straight of the protag gang, but I argue that he’s as much an example of queer rep as any of our main characters, albeit in a less conventional and fanservicey way.
So that’s what this post is gonna be, an analysis of Hiromi/SHADOW as a queer figure, how his character fits the Jekyll/Hyde archetype as a metaphor for queerness and The Closet, the similarities between SHADOW as a skatesona and early drag, and how his character represents a larger problem of exclusion within queer fandom spaces.
The 1886 Gothic novella The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson is the origin of the phrase “Jekyll and Hyde”. What I’m calling the Jekyll/Hyde archetype, refers to the same thing; it refers to duality, to a character who is “outwardly good but sometimes shockingly evil” (as described from the novella’s wiki page).
And the Jekyll/Hyde dynamic has also long been associated with Queerness. The antagonism between Jekyll and Hyde as two sides of the same person resonates with many people as similar to the experience being in the closet, and many many scholars have written about this queer reading of Jekyll and Hyde. Do a quick google search if you don’t believe me.
Hiromi experiences his own Jekyll/Hyde duality through his SHADOW persona, which seems to entirely contradict with Hiromi’s day to day personality.
Whilst Hiromi is sweet, romantic, and generally very cutesy, SHADOW is mean-spirited, sadistic, described as “the anti-hero of the S community.”  And though these two personalities seem entirely at odds, SHADOW doesn’t exist in a vacuum, he’s very much a part of Hiromi. In the show, this manifests as SHADOW’s sabotage moves being all flower themed, as Hiromi works in a flower shop, and how he’ll “step out” of character when playing babysitter to the kids.
Below is passage from an essay titled, “The Homoerotic Architectures of Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” which reminds me a lot of Hiromi’s character, such that I think his character arc can be read as an allegory for coming out and self acceptance.
The closet, here, is a space not only for secrecy and repression, but also for becoming; it is the space in which queer identities build themselves up from “disused pieces” and attempt to discover the strength needed for presentation to the world. The closet is both a space of profound fear and profound courage—of potentiality and actualization. (Prologue)
Unlike the kid/teen characters, the show’s adult characters all lead double lives. When they aren’t skating, they have day jobs. Kaoru is a calligrapher, Kojiro is a restaurant owner, Ainosuke is a politician/businessman (but tbh his job is just being some rich dude), and Hiromi works in a flower shop.
But of the adult protagonists (so not Ainosuke), Hiromi compartmentalizes the most.
Kojiro leaves his face totally exposed such that he can be recognized both on and off the skate scene. Kaoru at least covers his face, but his trademark pink hair and constant use of Carla doesn’t make it very hard to connect the dots between him and CHERRY. He’s also always with Kojiro in the evenings, so if you don’t recognize him as CHERRY when he’s on his own, you certainly will when you see him interacting with Kojiro/JOE.
Next to these two, Hiromi seems the more adamant at separating his Work from Play.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Even when he’s been clearly found it, he still tries to deny that he and SHADOW are the same person. Miya even uses this to coerce Hiromi into helping him and the boys:
Tumblr media
I don’t think it’s a stretch to say that the separation between Hiromi and SHADOW can be interpreted as a metaphor for being in The Closet. As SHADOW, he leads a secret life, one characterized by an tight-knit underground community with a vibrant night scene, where he behaves in ways typically frowned upon by larger society. He worries about being found out and judged by the people close to him.
But in Ep 4, the walls of his Closet begins to come down, or in this case is literally imposed upon by other members of his community, by its younger members, who don’t feel the same need to hide their passion for skateboarding or lead the same kind of double life.
We then see the line between Hiromi and SHADOW begin to blur.
He becomes less of an antagonist, and instead the audience sees him become a mentor and “mother hen” figure for the younger skaters. Later on in Ep 4, we see him casually interacting with the other protags in full SHADOW mode, not as an “anti-hero” but as a friend.  In Ep 6, he acts as a babysitter for the kids, and we see him totally comfortable appearing both in an out of his SHADOW persona throughout their vacation.
And I think that this gradual convergence of Hiromi and SHADOW will culminate in this tournament arc.
There’s something more personal that’s driving SHADOW to do well in this tournament. It’s not just for bragging rights or his pride as a skater, but the results of this tournament is going to have some kind of greater impact on Hiromi’s personal life. Personally, my theory is that Hiromi is using this tournament to prove to himself that he’s worthy enough to ask his manager out on a date.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hiromi is no longer compartmentalizing, his two lives are overlapping and influencing each other. Recall the essay quote I cited earlier:
The closet... is the space in which queer identities build themselves up from “disused pieces” and attempt to discover the strength needed for presentation to the world... of potentiality and actualization.
This is exactly the case for Hiromi. Through skating, he is piecing together the disparate parts of him such that he can present himself to the world as a more unified and confident being.
And the show presents the very skating community that Hiromi has been working so hard to keep separated from his personal life- Reki, Langa, Miya, Kaoru, and Kojiro- as the catalyst for that becoming.
That, my dear readers, is queer coding if I ever saw it.
But there’s probably gonna be people claiming something along the lines of “But SHADOW can’t be queer rep because he’s Straight!” And I assume that’s because he shows romantic interest in his female manager.
First of all, Bisexuality. Also Ace/aro-spec people. And second of all, SHADOW is Hiromi’s drag persona.
And before anyone can say anything about how Hiromi can’t do drag because he’s straight (assumption) and cis (also an assumption) uhhhh no, fuck you.
Drag didn’t start with RuPaul’s Drag Race, that’s just how it got mainstream. And it’s also how it got so gentrified and transphobic. You heard me. But anyway.
Drag is, and has always been, first and foremost about exaggerated, and oftentimes satirical, gender presentation and performance. It’s about playing with gender norms through artistic dress and theater, not so much to do with sexuality or gender identity.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Literally, what’s the difference here?
SHADOW is a persona of exaggerated masculinity with a punk aesthetic. Regardless of his sexuality or gender identity, Hiromi’s gender performance as SHADOW is drag- that makes him queer representation, change my fucking mind.
Queerness is more than same-sex romance, and by extension, good queer representation is not limited to canonized gay ships. The very word Queer, in it’s ambiguity, is meant to encompass the richly unique experiences of everyone within the LGBTQ+ community.
In my opinion, Queer =/= Gay. I mean, they’re colloquially the same yes and even I use them interchangeably. But for the purpose of this post, they’re not the same, and that’s to argue that Hiromi/SHADOW’s lack of acknowledgement as queer rep illustrates a larger issue of exclusion within fandom.
I mean, this is something we all kinda been knew, but in the case of Sk8 specifically, there are a two main reasons why I think Hiromi is rarely acknowledged as queer rep.
1. He’s not shippable with another male character
Fandom favors mlm ships when it comes to what’s considered good queer rep. And the ultimate mark of good queer rep is explicit acts of romance or intimacy between two male characters. Unlike with any of the other characters in the show, we can’t point to Hiromi and automatically clock him as gay, especially because he expresses romantic interest in a woman.
So by default, he’s less popular, because “Ew Straight People” amirite /s.
2. He’s not attractive
This is really interesting, because like JOE, Hiromi is a beefcake.
Tumblr media
But fans don’t thirst over him the same way they do over JOE. Granted, the show really plays up JOE’s muscles in a very strip-teasey way that literally encourages viewers to find him attractive. By contrast, Hiromi is pretty much covered head to toe and he paints his face in theatrical makeup- the point is to look scary, not attractive.
In essence, even though Hiromi engages in “queer behavior” through his SHADOW persona, his queerness isn’t palatable.
Tumblr media
But I also think there’s some pretty insidious undercurrents of fetishization going on here, of both Asian people AND gay men. Which is... a whole other thing I really don’t have the capacity to unpack completely.
But basically, Hiromi doesn’t fit into any of the popular BL archetypes so he’s less likely to recognized as Queer. Relatedly, he’s also less often subjected to a fetishistic gaze as other characters. I mean...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So again, fans just don’t find him as appealing. Attractive characters are always more popular than ugly ones.
And I’m sure there are a lot of people who just don’t care for Hiromi’s personality, that’s fine, he does act like an asshole sometimes. But this post is meant to illustrate that queer rep takes multiple forms, and unfortunately I think a lot of media just tends to fall back on stereotypical portrayals of queer people for the sake of broader appeal. And by consequence, the fandom’s idea of what constitutes queer rep narrows to same-sex romance, usually between two cis gay men.
With the release of Ep 9, I know a lot of people queer people are going to find representation in the Kojiro’s whole “unrequited love” thing. But personally, I feel more represented by Hiromi, his journey of self-acceptance and subversive relationship with gender- that’s what resonates with me as a trans person.
And I think it’s important to see that kind of less palatable type of queer representation more acknowledged in fandom, and in Sk8′s fandom especially, because I know the demographics of this fandom lean heavily queer.
But that’s all for now, lemme know what you guys think :)

Hello please talk about king explosion murder
THE BOY!!!!!
can you believe i spent months trying to be lowkey about my bakugou ships? it took me a while to even admit he was my favourite despite the fact i knew from the start i’d end up a bakugou stan. i never had a ‘oh no this kid’s a mean terrible person’ phase - it was a ‘oh, i can’t Reveal my character tastes like this. not like this.’ phase.
this got…..long. so uh. under the cut it goes:
ANYWAY: i ship bakugou with…..uh…….a lot of characters. kiribaku is the easiest to explain - dumbass jock boyfriends who do shit like baku using kiri as a hammer to make mochi. and kiri being gung-ho about testing his unbreakable mode (which, btw, was motivated by bakugou’s words!!!) by having bakugou fucking. use howlitzer impact on him. you know how i feel about bro ships (hint: i love them). how kiri went from ‘man this bakugou guy is nuts!!! we have to stop him!!!!’ to ‘wow bakugou is so manly and cool and i wanna be by his side’ in the span of (1) one-on-one convo. HE LIKES BAKUGOU SO MUCH. IT’S CUTE. LIKE, I DON’T THINK BAKUGOU GETS HOW HAPPY HE MAKES KIRISHIMA LMAO. how bakugou so readily accepted kiri as an equal - bakugou, who only had two categories for people [extras vs rivals], never thought to seriously think of kiri as anything but an ally and a friend, people always talk how kirishima was the first classmate bakugou even bothered remembering the name of, and with reason, since it says a lot. kiri’s got quite a bit of mlm subtext going on, tbh, and bakugou’s the source of almost all of it. soooooo there’s that too.
but i’ve also fallen Deep into bakudeku. it’s the shared development, okay. the history and complex emotions and the slowburn to becoming partners. there’s just so much, and they’re so ENTRENCHED in each other. for better or worse, for how much they might dislike the fact they can’t stop thinking about each other, they just can’t help it. they couldn’t understand each other at all but somehow still knew the other inside and out. and deku’s been so smitten since he was like a baby 3 year old and it breaks my heart. it’s honestly one of my favourite shounen rival ships bc it keeps subverting your expectations. and every episode/chapter that deals with their issues and nudges them closer to the ideal - the endgame - is guranteed to be among the best. they’re the backbone of the series, and i love watching them grow together. the fact that they’re currently HEALTHY RIVALS AND TENTATIVE FRIENDS (like deku feels so comfortable gushing over bakugou to his face again and bakugou is so invested in deku’s improvement & is only snappy w/ him out of reflex lmao)….that bakugou is deku’s secret keeper and deku is the one person bakugou allows himself to be vulnerable around……HOO BOY. i just imagined bakugou holding out his hand for deku to take - or accepting deku’s hand at all - and died.
ALSO, TODOBAKU….my darkhorse ship, which hit me in the face one day when i realized how a) hilarious they are together and b) how the series keeps shoving them together (sometimes literally - thanks slidin’ go for giving them the group hug they deserved). i love how they’re so different yet similar - bakugou is loud and obnoxious while todoroki is stern and quiet, but they’re both rude prodigies who needed to be jumpkicked into realizing that they could become better people with the help of others instead of letting anger and bitterness swallow them up. and the provisional exam course made it so they were forced to hang out with each other 95% of the time for three whole months and i LIVE FOR THAT. i love how funny they are - todoroki is snarky & doesn’t even bat an eyelash over bakugou’s tantrums but genuinely tries to be nice and make friends with him! bakugou is so petty and wants todoroki’s attention soooo bad but don’t think i haven’t noticed that most times we’ve seen him genuinely smile has been in todoroki’s presence (ok, then todoroki reacts to it and bakugou instantly goes back to a snarl but STILL). also the fact that the narrative doesn’t want us to forget that bakugou eavesdropped on todoroki telling deku about his family, and bakugou is always Alert and keeping an eye on todo whenever endeavour is involved bc he’s sympathetic and y’know??? cares????? SO GOOD. AND THEY’RE SUCH A GOOD TEAM - SURPRISINGLY IN SYNC AND THEIR QUIRKS MATCH UP AND I LOVE THEM!
GOD, HORI…..BAKUGOU/URARAKA WOULD BE SO GOOD. like, can you *imagine* the sheer potential of a ship that you only really have them interact during one goddamn tournament fight and yet it becomes arguably the most popular het ship in your series (w/ only the main character and his canon love interest as real competition????) i love them though, like,,,,i find it so interesting that uraraka has shown, despite again - minimal onscreen interaction - that she understands bakugou better than most. she knows how he’d handle their fight and uses that to her advantage. (and while she still lost, she gained his respect and a new drive to get stronger!) she’s the one who brings up how HE’D feel about the plan to go rescue him - that his pride would prevent him from easily accepting help. i’m desperately trying to figure out a way they could animate that omake where uraraka plants herself in deku’s seat and demands that bakugou bury the hatchet with him while gently but firmly calling him out for his root issue of fear and his defense mechanism of violently pushing deku away. and it managed to calm him down and honestly, i wouldn’t be surprised if he ruminated on those words for a while. IT’S SO GOOD, WHY WASN’T IT IN THE STORY ITSELF!!! and like, the mere fact he respects her a lot and ended up *psyched* to continue fighting her - and after he’s told deku had nothing to do with her plan, i don’t think he’d make that mistake again, which makes it easier for him to understand her back. he knows she’s smart and talented and that everyone else was wrong to underestimate her. also, i love that uraraka thinks bakugou is like…..funny? he’s out there threatening to murder kaminari and uraraka’s like ‘hahaha :’’)))’ bc she has such a Bro/vulgar sense of humour. like, i think they’d have a lot of fun together. LET THEM TALK MORE, PLS!!!!
THOSE ARE MY MAIN SHIPS BUT I ALSO SHIP HIM WITH THE REST OF THE BAKUSQUAD! BOTH PLATONICALLY AND ROMANTICALLY! I HAVE NO SHAME! baku/kami is so underrated and great - kaminari is just as much bakugou’s bff as kirishima is, tbh, and he has absolutely No Chill which makes their interactions - especially the further the story goes and bakugou’s edges soften - so much fun. one moment, he’ll be casually commenting that bakugou is the worst and needs to change his whole rotten personality - then the next second, he’ll be sprawled all over him, calling him kacchan and defending his honour from actual haters. and bakugou just fucbdhfhd lets this happen. bakugou likes kaminari enough to just let him. do whatever the hell he wants. ALSO, THE BAND. admittedly, sero is the only one with enough common sense and actual standards to avoid dating bakugou (’HE’LL NEVER BE BEAUTIFUL’ ghdhfhd sero) but i still adore them. sero’s so tricksy and loves playing the reverse psychology trick on bakugou, who just constantly falls for it. i bet he was the first person bakugou let just hang out in his room, and he probably appreciates that sero actually gives him his space when he needs it! i can’t believe baku/sero is the Real ‘bakugou pining’ ship. @ hori: GIVE MINA AND BAKUGOU ACTUAL INTERACTIONS, GDI. i’m forced to headcanon their whole dynamic from near-scratch. whereas kiri and kami are more the type to glue themselves to bakugou’s back, i imagine mina’s the type to actively drag bakugou along places. she probably cried when she found out that a) his parents are rich designers (’BUY ME CLOTHES, BAKUGOUUUU’) and b) his glycerin-based quirk and taking after his mom means he usually has perfect skin and has never broken out in his life. she doesn’t speak to him for a week until he takes her out to dinner and buys her a cute dress. and i’m super fond of baku/jirou. i love that their dynamic is like…..while the rest of their friends are doing dumb shit For The VineTM, they’re on the sidelines waiting for shit to hit the fan. they’re punk buds and prob do that couples clothes switch thing a lot just to see if anyone notices. jirou bosses him around and he takes all her advice seriously and like, they trust each other! they have great team synergy! she was the first person bakugou both consciously protected and asked to protect him in turn!! DID I MENTION THE BAND?? i also ship him with camie! it’s just such a funny concept to imagine - like imagine you’re in class 1A and bakugou shows up out of nowhere with a hot girlfriend who talks. like that. and she makes him laugh??? and no, seriously, does he actually understand what the hell she’s saying???? WHAT’S HAPPENING. but yeah, she very casually teases him but also seemed comfortable w/ him right off the bat and i know in my heart that bakugou relented and let her have his phone number. also, i find it funny people started shipping him with shindou after bakugou was the one to call him out for being duplicitous. bakugou’s the type of character that just needs to interact with another character once and *someone* out there will be like ‘what if………..they were dating’ and that’s so valid of them.
good bakugou ot3/ot4s: kirishima/bakugou/uraraka, todoroki/midoriya/bakugou, todoroki/inasa/camie/bakugou. i reblog a looooot of kirishima/kaminari/bakugou and bakugou/uraraka/midoriya even tho i don’t actually ship either as an ot3 that much, oops? they’re good ships tho.
is there something i’m missing? I MIGHT BE MISSING SOMETHING.

Ranking the 31 best ways to get rich in 2019
So you’re trying to get that paper. You don’t want to be a businessman, you want to be a business, man. I don’t hate it.
You’re gonna need some mad skills though, or at least a lot of patience. Don’t think anything worthwhile comes easy.
Be sure to check out how to make money fast, how to save money, and ways to make money online.
Luckily, thanks to the world wide web, you can learn just about anything from your home.
But I won’t make you wait any longer… here are the best ways to stack that paper in 2019.
32. Network marketing
I live to knock it, lol, but even I was raking in 5-figure paychecks through MLM before I gave in to my own sense of self-respect.
If you’re crazy enough to think you could somehow make it into the top .0001% as I did, network marketing could work for you. The first step is to lose your shame. The second step is to lose your friends and family.
Still want to do network marketing? You’ll want to make sure you aren’t joining an actual pyramid scheme.
Pyramid schemes are illegal basically everywhere, but that doesn’t stop people from starting one and hiding behind an MLM label.
Here are a few ways you can distinguish between the two:
Primary earning method – Is the compensation plan set up in a way where you earn more from selling products or recruiting new members? Pyramid schemes tend to do the latter.
Emphasis – Aside from the compensation plan, does the company make a huge deal out of recruiting without caring much about their products? Could be a pyramid scheme.
Do they pay attention to their market? If there’s no interest in consumer demand, that’s a sign they care only about adding new members to the pyramid.
Upfront investment size – Pyramid schemes usually require a large upfront “investment”, which just gets you your items. MLM’s sometimes charge upfront, but the fee tends to be pretty small.
None of those bullet points will 100% tell you if a company’s legit or not, but they do point you in the right direction.
Ultimately, it’s up to you to research the network marketing company further.
31. Real estate
Barbara Corcoran did it, and you can too.
While the average real estate agent banks about $54,000/year, there’s no limit to the amount you can earn in this job.
The Wall Street Journal recently published the salaries of the top 1,000 real estate agents, and the #1 head honcho grossed a whopping 1.4 billion, with a B. Even #250 made $60 million in annual sales. (1)
Normally, I’d say start investing in real estate yourself.
But not everyone has the money to buy up rental properties, nor do they always know what they’re doing.
Starting as a real estate agent is a great way to earn a nice paycheck while you’re learning the ins and outs of real estate.
Then you can jump ship and start your own little real estate empire.
30. Index funds
When Warren Buffet hits you up with investment advice, you listen: index funds.
This is the slow way to riches, but it’s almost certain. You can average a solid 8.5% return on index funds, which means that you’d be a millionaire in 20 years if you start investing $1,587/month now. (2)
29. Virtual reality
So, a couple years ago I blogged about how the VR industry was expected to blow up. Over 12 million in headset sales predicted for 2016. (3)
A funny thing happened in 2016: almost 100 million were sold. (4)
The best part? 96% of these were low-cost, partial VR headsets, and the market for those in China is expected to hit $8.5 billion.
You don’t have to invest in crazy tech and clunky, futuristic headsets. Plastic and cardboard units that cost $30 and attach to your smartphone will do just fine.
Start up an SEO heavy e-commerce store if you’ve got the digital marketing skills, or start a highly targetted niche business, like selling VR headsets to the wedding market (except don’t, because that niche is taken by LiveKnot). (5)
28. Networking
There’s this legend of an Italian billionaire who was asked, “If you had to start all over again, from zero, what would you do?”
He said he’d take any job he could get that paid $500, buy a nice suit, and go to a party filled with successful people. If you’re not a people person, learn to be one.
Why?
Because it’s not what you know, it’s who you know.
Dale Carnegie (yep, the dude from How to Win Friends and Influence People) once taught public speaking to Warren Buffett. His advice? Smile, listen, be genuinely interested in other people, remember their names, and offer lots of praise.
27. Consulting
You can start off at a big 5 consulting firm (think PriceWaterhouseCoopers, Accenture) and make over $70,000 as an entry-level consultant, easily hitting 6-figs when you go Senior. (6)
Then go freelance for more freedom and more money.
Alternatively, if you don’t have consulting experience but can get a very specialized skillset, go into freelance niche consulting (financial consulting, marketing consulting, etc). Without decades of consulting experience, you’ll have to charge based on your performance – in other words, your rate will be based on the results you deliver. If you’re good, this just means more money.
26. Investment banker
Think Wall Street. Think Goldman Sachs. Think J.P. Morgan.
Banking has produced some of the world’s richest people…. if you can avoid getting thrown in Martha Stewart prison, that is.
That being said, the median salary for investment bankers is $100,000. (7)
However, you’ve gotta hustle if you want to get to that 7-figure salary. It’s not just 40 hours a week.
It’s more like 90-100 hours most weeks for your typical analyst/associate, according to a former investment banker and author named Andrew Gutmann. (8)
To put that into perspective, that’s equivalent to a little over 16 hours a day, 5 days a week, but usually that involves coming in on the weekend as well.
Not everyone will succeed in a job with those hours.
But those that make it to a VP position can easily pull 7 figures a year.
25. Public speaker
Build a brand for yourself and a recognizable name, and you could be snagging 6-figure speaking engagements presidential-style. PublicPaidSpeaking.com is a good place to start…some of their “non celebrity professional speakers” are banking “individual profits of over $800,000 a year.” (9)
Yeah, you read that right.
24. Life coaching
If you’re that friend that everyone goes to for advice, life coaching could potentially bank you a multi-million dollar practice on the internet. The industry has been booming ever since the economic crash in 2008. (10) People in hard times will spend every last cent they have for someone who can fix their problems.
Becoming a thought leader by starting your own blog, guest blogging, writing on LinkedIn, and self-publishing on Amazon. As soon as you score your first high-profile client you can start name-dropping, and the requests will fall into your lap from there.
23. Kid-Friendly YouTube videos
How many times have you gone to dinner and seen a kid glued to their iPad watching YouTube while Mommy and Daddy get some private time?
There’s an entire app called YouTube Kids, and it gets 8 million weekly users. (11) The best part? The quality of your vids can be absolute garbage, because kids don’t care either way as long as you keep them mesmerized. One of the richest YouTube millionaires is a 5-year old who makes videos of him opening toys. Literally, that’s it. (12)
22. Cryptocurrency
Bitcoin skyrocketed in 2017, reaching almost $20,000, but has since fallen to hovering around $8,000-$10,000.
While not as big of a moneymaker as it used to be, cryptocurrency is still a promising way to make money.
There are two routes you can take depending on how tech savvy you are. If you’re less tech savvy, invest. It’s a gamble but one with potentially huge returns. If you’re more tech savvy, launch a crypto ICO. Basically, you start your own cryptocurrency and hack it via a crowdfunding technique called “Initial Coin Offerings”.
Ethereum started as an ICO, and it was priced at only $12. Nowadays, it hovers around $180 depending on the day.
Keep in mind that your coin has to have a unique, useful idea behind it. Pumping and dumping coins might’ve worked years ago, but people aren’t going to invest in random coins anymore unless there’s a compelling reason.
21. Blockchain
Blockchain is the technology that cryptocurrency uses to record transactions. It’s basically a decentralized, encrypted way of recording transactions digitally so they can’t be hacked or altered (or at least without a genius hacker).
Companies are currently developing blockchain solutions for nearly every field, meaning plenty of lucrative investing opportunities await.
If you’ve got a blockchain solution idea and you can sell yourself to angel investors, you could start your own company instead.
20. Gaming
Everybody would’ve laughed in your face if you said you were going to become a multi-millionaire by playing Doom back in the 1990s.
Fast forward a couple decades, and you now have people like Ninja making half a million for live-streaming his Fortnite sessions. (13)
You wanna make money playing video games? Playing in tournaments and being an e-sports athlete is one way, but the big money’s in streaming on platforms like Twitch and making YouTube videos because the income is much more passive.
Granted, it takes a long time to build an audience, but I mean you’re playing video games while you’re doing it, not running a blog or anything.
It’s a brave new world.
19. Podcasting
Everyone’s favorite podcaster Joe Rogan was allegedly earning $75,000 per episode of his Joe Rogan Experience podcast back in 2016. (14) That number’s gotta be much higher now.
To start a podcast, you’ll first need a topic, preferably something interesting. You’ll also want to decide on a name as well as the length you want each episode to be.
Aside from that, the rest of it comes down to creating your brand and planning/recording your episodes.
18. Dating apps
Almost half the population of the U.S. uses online dating now, and a third of new marriages start online. (15)
This is a huge market to capitalize on. Sure, you’ve already got your Tinders and Grindrs and eHarmonies, but there’s plenty of space left for the niche dating market.
Just look at Spark Networks, owner of Christian Mingle and Jdate (a Jewish dating site). They consistently gross over $100 million a year for matching up religious singles with other singles of the same religion.
Find a niche that’s not taken, turn it into a mobile app, and pair it with the addictive gameified interface of Tinder. You’re welcome.
17. Niche Sites
You can get rich selling products without having to manufacture them or even set up a store with affiliate marketing.
Niche sites are one of the easiest ways to go about this. You basically build a site/blog around an extremely niche topic and target ultra-specific keywords to bring in visitors that are highly likely to buy. All you need are your standard website pages (home, affiliate disclosure, privacy policy, etc), a few simple blog posts targeting your keywords, and some affiliate products.
Once your niche site pulls a decent income, you can scale by hiring writers or VAs to manage your site and pump out posts, then you can start another site and repeat the process.
You won’t get rich overnight, but as your site reaches more people thanks to your SEO efforts, more people will buy through your affiliate links, growing your income.
If you ever get sick of running your niche sites, you can always sell them for a nice profit.
16. Marijuana
Large-scale legalization of weed in the US started with Colorado and Washington in 2012, but it’s slowly spreading all over the states.
And in Canada, it’s been legalized federally.
If you have no moral qualms with your money flowing into the marijuana industry, you can capitalize on the legal acceptance of pot in two ways.
The first would be investing in marijuana stocks. As you’d expect, these are quite volatile what with all the political battles over the little green plant. Don’t worry, though, as the industry is expected to reach over $23 billion by 2022. (16)
Or, if you live in a state where recreational marijuana is legal, you could start your own marijuana business in the form of either a dispensary or a grow operation.
Neither are cheap, and starting either one requires jumping through a ton of legal hoops for obvious reasons. Plus, you gotta operate your business on an all-cash basis since it’s still banned federally.
But nearly 90% of dispensaries, wholesale cultivators (grow operations), and even companies making weed-infused products were profitable in 2016. (17)
What better way to make some green than with some green?
15. Flip websites
Imagine making $58,000 in profit over the course of 2 months just by buying and selling domain names. Well, it’s been done. (18)
Domains are basically digital real estate. Domain flipping sites like Flippa make it easy to try your luck, but if you really want to make good money, do your research and base your domain purchases on knowledge and skill. (19)
14. Amazon self-publishing
Thanks to the internet, anyone can publish a book now for free. But you have to put in solid marketing effort to make sales.
You don’t have a publishing house doing all the work for you, but you’re also raking in most of the profits. Self-publish on Amazon and sell your book for $2.99 or less, and you get to keep 70% of the royalties. (20) If you can sell 477,783 copies (indie self-publishing star Amanda Hocking was doing 100,000/month in sales in her prime), you’ll make your first million. (21)
Then if you want, start your own website and sell your books on there at whatever price you want. You’ll get to keep all your profits.
Just make sure you can handle all the admin and marketing stuff, or better, hire someone else to do it.
13. Content farm
If you’re looking for the next big thing, content marketing is already it. The industry is on track to rake in $313 billion by 2019, so get on it now. (22)
If you can learn how to write epic content that drives sales (and get your name in Forbes and HuffPo), you can charge hundreds per article.
Even better, start a content farm, hire writers off of freelancing websites, and skim passive profit off the top.
Starting a content farm will require you have the cash to pay your writers. Without it, your best bet is to do the writing yourself until you’ve got some money.
12. Instagram influencer
Grab that iPhone, download some photo editing apps, slap a filter on your selfie and post. Simple.
Instagram “micro-influencers” (10k-50k following) don’t make huge bucks…more like $50-$100 per post. But if you can grow your following up to 6-figures, you could rake in thousands for posting one sponsored photo. (23) Making a paycheck has never been easier.
11. Software development
Unlike web development, this is learning coding and development that’s focused on building software. It has a lower ceiling but a higher average income.
Learn some of the more lucrative frameworks and systems (like Spark and Cassandra) and some of the highest paying programming languages (like Scala and F#), and you’ll hit an average salary of $125,000. (24)
With enough experience, capital, and entrepreneurial skills, you could launch your own software company and maybe even become the next Silicon Valley success story too.
10. Video post-production
Video is IT. By 2020, video is expected to make up a whopping 90% of all internet traffic. It’s already on a huge upswing, having grown 71% year-over-year in 2016. (25)
You could go through the trouble of writing scripts, hiring actors, directing, and getting expensive filming equipment, or you could just start your own company that offers post-production video services (editing, adding in music, credits, etc).
That’s the part that most people outsource anyway. Once you build your name, start your own video editing training school to really bring in the passive income.
9. Web design
Websites like Codeacademy and SkillCrush will teach you web design for fairly cheap, and some websites even teach it for free. (26) (27)
Web design is the less technical, more design-oriented side of creating websites. You get to design layouts, make sure color schemes work well, and all that fun stuff. While it doesn’t pay quite as well as web development, you don’t have to learn as much code and you can still earn $75-$100/hour. (28)
8. Social media consultant
Facebook has over 3 million companies using their ads, and over 60 million using their pages to promote their business. (29) Instagram has over 1 million advertisers, and it’s bound to keep growing. (30)
If you’re that friend who’s always scrolling social media, editing photos, hashtagging, and whipping up clever captions, you can make money doing that. Get analytics and ads on lock on your skills list, and you can make good money doing what you do best.
7. Data scraping
You can do this manually without any programming skills, it just takes a lot longer. But if you come up with a good, unique idea like
Scraping emotional reactions to certain types of content on Facebook
Gathering leads from online business directories for B2B service providers
Gathering contact info for homes that were recently purchased
Scraping for keywords in user reviews of a certain product
Businesses will pay for the data if it helps them sell their products.
Now imagine if you did know how to code and could create computer programs that scrape all this data for you in seconds. You’d be making sales faster than you could keep up with them.
6. e-Commerce
Pick a niche product. I mean really niche (think “Disney coffee mugs” or “small travel backpacks”).
You don’t have to manufacture the product – you can fill orders via Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA), dropshipping (basically online retail without inventory), or even plain old affiliate marketing.
Kick your SEO into full gear. Once you’re #1 on Google you’ll start seeing some handsome profits with little to no effort aside from maintenance.
You can boost your sales by spending on ads (or hiring an expert to do the ads for you) once you’ve got cash rolling in. No need to if you don’t want to, but do it right and your profits will increase.
Then you can scale it by outsourcing all the menial stuff to virtual assistants. Hey, you’re creating jobs now!
5. Web Development
Again, you can learn this online, even for free.
Unlike web design, learning more advanced coding languages and becoming a web developer PAYS. One developer wrote in Business Insider of a typical job offer – $150,000 salary, $10,000 signing bonus, all kinds of freebies, from gym memberships to free meals on the daily, and flexible work hours. (31)
Of course, if you take all that coding knowledge and use it to start your own hit website (think Facebook), the sky is the limit.
Again, websites like Code Academy, Khan Academy, and Code.com (among a ton of others) are filled to the brim with coding lessons and other good stuff.
But as you know, the best way to get better is to practice. Once you’ve learned some stuff from your free online resources, you’ve got to start building websites with your skills.
4. Blogging
Bloggers don’t actually make money, right?
Nope, not a myth. If you hit it big with your blog you can clear six figures a year EASY.
Just look at Pat Flynn of Smart Passive Income. I mean, he regularly clears six figures every MONTH.
Sure, he’s got like 100 income sources at this point, but according to his income reports, affiliate marketing alone earns him around $100,000 a month give or take.
For more proof, just search the web for “blog income reports” and you’ll get endless lists of, well, blog income reports.
If you get really big, think Mashable, Tech Crunch, and Endgadget status (yes, they all started as blogs), you can even score a lucrative takeover. Ariana Huffington eventually sold the Huffington Post for $315 million to AOL. (32)
3. Mobile app creator
Mobile apps routinely hit 250 billion downloads worldwide this year. (33)
Platforms often pay 70% profits on your app sales, so if you’re selling an app for $4.99, that can add up quickly. Sell half a million downloads, and you’re looking at a $1,746,500 profit.
That might sound hard, but there are actually thousands of apps that have hit over a million downloads, so hitting half that is definitely possible.
2. SEO consulting
Having a digital presence is a must for any business nowadays, and the only way to get there is through SEO. Because of that, companies will pay huge amounts to someone who can provide results…I’m talking page one Google results.
The hourly consulting rate for a legit SEO specialist is $100-$300. (34)
1. Lead generation for local businesses
If you’re looking for automated, digital, and scalable, this is it. If you’re looking for a market with low competition that is almost impossible to saturate, this is it. If you’re looking for guaranteed five-figure paychecks, this is also it.
The bottom line is that this method works better and more consistently than almost any other for generating passive income. You’re building out niche websites that focus on specific products and specific locations, so when your competition is cut down to people advertising limo services in Dayton, Ohio, hitting it big is a lot more do-able.
Use SEO to get to the top and let the leads come in overnight. Once you can offer local businesses a stack of contact info for people who have already said they’re interested in the product or service, they’ll start handing you money faster than you can count it.

31. Real estate

Once you can offer local businesses a stack of contact info for people who have already said they’re interested in the product or service, they’ll start handing you money faster than you can count it.

i appreciate garashir and quodo being there but HOW can you make a ship poll without our FOUNDING FATHERS (spirk)
Hi!
The ship bracket is determined based on user submissions through a form I put out 1-2 weeks before the polls begin.
As for Spirk specifically they are not included as they have already been included in a previous MLM Ships Bracket, specifically as the winners of the bracket. This can be found >>> HERE <<<

Oops. I made a mistake.
Looking through the polls as more propaganda has been submitted or reblogged I realized I forgot to add the propaganda for Shawngus even though I'd added it to previous polls.
In order to make this fair I believe, I will be editing the current polls (Round 4 - Semifinals) to add the original Shawngus propaganda as well as newly submitted or reblogged propaganda (by copy pasting originally posted propaganda or linking to where the propaganda is located such as in reblogs or in an ask post) for any of the ships in the current polls: Shawngus, Goldenheart, Zimbits, and Spirk.
Feel free to submit further propaganda in the ask or reblogs and I will link them. Any propaganda submitted within the next 24 hours (beginning 12:20 AM PST) will be included in the edit. This is my way of making up for not including what was originally included.
Thank you for hearing me out. Enjoy submitting more propaganda for your faves if you wish to do so. ~
