Reader’s POV

The look on the girls faces when Josh asked if any of us would like to take part in the Sidemen match said it all. I knew from the get-go that I would be the only one. While they all rapidly shook their heads, I threw my hand up in the air in excitement.

“I will!” I shouted like a child in a classroom.

I was quick to realise that this wouldn’t be like the stupid games of football I played on the playground in school. But if I could handle getting slide tackled on hard concrete then what couldn’t I take on, right?

In my teenage years and adult life, I hadn’t played much football. I dedicated my time to watching it instead, so getting back on the pitch was going to be good for me. The training I put in leading up to it though, not so much. In the last week running up to the match I was up at six in the morning to go for a run, and then a workout at the gym. I had gone down to the pitches with the boys a few times to practice with them.

Harry was so excited for me that he bought me a brand new pair of boots, which I otherwise would have had to buy myself. They were bright purple, with my name painted on the side in large, bold letters. He knew it was my favourite colour, and he knew I preferred Adidas boots over Nike. Josh had already explained to me in detail that the boys wouldn’t hold back on the challenges, and I was fine with that. We were 20 minutes into the match when I got subbed on.

“And it appears the crowd were not roaring for you, Brian, but in fact Y/N, who makes her debut as the first female to play in one of these matches”

“Do you think the boys will go hard on her? I reckon they might let her away with more cause they won’t want to be the dicks that clobbered the woma- oh Christ, and Will’s just two footed Y/N and she’s gone flying”

The pain was unbearable at first, the studs of my opponent felt like they had ripped through the entirety of my right leg. I got up nonetheless, setting up to take the free kick I had been awarded. I could see the boys powering into the box, indicated they were hoping for a cross in. I took a short run up, booting the ball into the box. Heads were flying everywhere trying to make a connection, and Harry’s head made the crucial touch, sending the ball fleeing into the net.

The crowd cheered for the third goal of the match, and I watched as Harry charged over in my direction. I threw my hands up in the air, the screaming boy collided with my body, picking me up and twirling me around. The rest of the team joined in, the adrenaline masking the claustrophobia I would usually be experiencing. Harry pecked me on the lips lightly before we all ran back to our half.

“And would you look at that. A little kiss on the field to celebrate what I think could be the best assist of the game, so far”

“It’s quite cute, when you think about it”

“Did you just use the word ‘cute’, Brian?”

It was now the 70th minute, and even though the game was for charity, you could see some of the Allstar’s team getting frustrated. I could see where they were coming from, Sidemen FC were the exact same the year before.

I could see Manny running down the wing with the ball, so I tried to make myself useful and speed into the box. He kicked the ball along the pitch, and as I went to strike it with my left food, I felt someone shove me harshly, sending me hurdling toward the floor, knocking the wind out of me. Callux was leaning over me to check if I was okay. I nodded, despite the nauseating feeling in my stomach. “What the fuck was that?” I heard Harry scream. I lift my head enough to see what the commotion was and I saw Harry getting in Deji’s face.

“I need to go off” I mumbled, Simon had caught wind of what I was saying, helping me up from my position on the floor. He motioned to the bench to sub me, and soon Vik was running on the pitch, causing an eruption of cheers. I hobbled around the stadium to reach the bench, a few claps of pity could be heard from the fans. I managed to work it into a jog by the time I reached my seat.

“You alright?” Ethan asked. I shook my head to say no, and as I went to open my mouth to speak, I could feel myself about to vomit. I covered my mouth with my hand, looking around for something to hurl into. Ethan handed me a bucket that had previously been filled with ice and water, and I let myself go. He rubbed my back gently, looking away to avoid a second team member taking unwell.

He took the bucket from me after I had emptied myself, hiding it under the seat. “Do you need to go inside?” He asked. I shook my head again.

“It’s colder out here” I mumbled, slouching against the seat. A couple minutes later, Ethan was subbed on in place of Harry, who took the seat next to me.

“Ethan told me you were sick” He told me, rubbing my back soothingly. He hooked my legs over his, cradling me slightly.

“They appear to be snuggling now, that’s sweet, isn’t it?”

“I think I saw Y/N letting it out into a bucket a second ago, so maybe not so sweet”

“It was a hard shove from Freezy I must admit, surprised he didn’t get a yellow card for that one”
