hi i have a question about z-lib (i saw you when i searched up z-lib here and thought you may know the answer) when i try to download books it directs me to this donation page with some links with bitcoin that’s apparently gonna get me an exclusive membership(?) but i do not want to donate, can’t i still use it like how it was before i do not understand (10 books for free each day)

Noooooo that's a phishing site! Zlib.is that appears as the top Google result is a scam site that's trying to steal login credentials and credit card info!! DO NOT RESPOND TO ANY EMAILS THEY SEND YOU. If you use the same email + password combo anywhere else, change it now.

Once you sign up via that, you'll be sent personal domain links that you can use to access the site. Zlib does use Bitcoin donations to gain membership that lets you download as many books as you want and access to added features, but its basic membership costs nothing and lets you download 10 books a day and send them to your email, which is good enough for normal users.

Never sign up for any piracy site without first googling whether the domain (the bit that comes after the dot) is a scam site or legit proxy. Always use a separate spam email account for this stuff, and never sign up for any piracy site that you can't use at all without giving them your credit card info.

I just reported a scam account on Wattpad, the first scam on there.

I got a message on there telling me they like my works and would love to sign me up to "Webnovel" and contact me on discord.

The problem is that I don't have a discord, I stopped using it since day 1.

That and I don't remember hearing about Webnovel until now and the message feels super shady, so i followed my gut instincts and looked up what the site is, turns out to be a scam site that traps authors.

So I reported and blocked the account.

Almost lost all christmas presents to give because this dumbshit site I stupidly gave a first chance decided my account after Not Using it At All but to Add shit to my fucking cart, was worth suspending.

Ya got the order, but you will Never Again see me on your site. First and last time, fucking idiots run that shithole. Don't even trust they'll send me my shit, awful company. Terrible. But most importantly, embarrassing. Never the fuck again.

Another red flag to remember for scammers is that sometimes for their new blog, instead of trying to make it look like they've been on tumblr for a while by backdating, they'll say they're "new" to tumblr (sometimes mention that they allegedly came from another social media site like twitter or reddit, but then don't give the username) & that they wanted to try their luck on tumblr for fundraising, but then they somehow always know exactly which popular users to mass tag in their posts & they usually tag the same people every time, very often they tag Black users as well

Really upset and absolutely enraged that I follow the tag artificial intelligence for cool science, like the machine that was recently made allowing a woman to speak using AI for the first time in years. Instead by following this tag in the last year I keep seeing the Art Theft Maker 5000 and being deeply disappointed.

be on the lookout for accounts sending asks begging for signal boosts on donation posts. they are usually brand-new blogs and won't let you view their archive to check that. they also use copy-pasted text in the ask and/or donation post; you can google excerpts "in quotes like this" and find verbatim duplicates.

i recognize that supporting other common folk on the web is important but you have GOT to be careful what you reblog and especially what you give money to. not everyone means it when they say they need money for medical/vet bills or what have you. there is almost no way to be sure who's telling the truth about why they need money and where it's going, especially if you don't personally know the blogger who posted it or, gods forbid, they're cold-calling you to panhandle. a blind reblog for awareness could result in a friend of yours getting scammed, so do your due diligence and don't take every stranger's donation post at face value.
