"Rooster, we need to eject, we're going down, you can't save it!" You yelled over the loud alarms, as your jet started to nose dive.
"Damn it!" You heard him yell out "Alright, eject, eject!"
As you were thrown into the air, you watched your jet crash down into the woods below you, as you plummeted towards the ground. After landing, not so elegantly, you quickly made your way through the woods towards where Rooster had landed.
Seeing him, you let out a sigh of relief.
"You alright?!" You both called out at the same time as you met.
You nodded "Yeah, I'm good."
"Me too." He commented, out of breath.
Looking around, you noted that the sun was getting lower in the sky. "They gonna be able to find us down here?"
Rooster let out a sigh and shook his head "It's too dangerous for a rescue mission right here, we might have to wait it out until morning."
Looking around you, you finally noticed just where you were. Dense, tall crooked trees surrounded you, the path was rocky and uneven, and it was eerily quiet.
"Could we be stuck in a creepier place?" You commented.
Rooster looked around as well and shrugged "It's better than right in the middle of enemy territory."
As a gust of wind rushed through the trees, bringing with it a deep eerie whistling, you met his gaze "You sure about that?"
He nodded his head, his voice not entirely comforting "We'll be fine."
You weren't convinced, but you shrugged your arms "Well, what do we do?"
"We should find some high ground, somewhere it will be easier to be picked up at. And a place to sleep for the night if we have too."
You nodded, hating the idea of sleeping out here in the wilderness. "This should be fun."
"It's just another adventure yeah?" He said encouragingly as he looked down at you.
You took in a breath and nodded "Yeah, just another adventure."
"That's the spirit" He said with a forced smile as he gently grabbed your arm, squeezing it lightly "Alright, come on, let's go."
Taking in a deep breath and letting it out, you began to follow Rooster through the dense trees, trying to ignore the fact that the sky was getting darker a lot faster than you'd wish.
--- --- ---
It didn't take long before the sun was out of sight, the sky above you peaking through the trees was a dark blue. As you looked further into the trees, you felt a chill crawl up your spine as the cold weather picked up, bringing with it a fog that coated the ground.
"I feel like we're in a horror movie." You mumbled softly.
You saw Rooster smirk a little "Well it is nearly Halloween."
You let out a small scoff "You remember when I complained about not wanting to go to the Halloween party tonight, 'cause it was just gonna be a bunch of drunk people?"
"Yeah."
"I'd rather be there."
He looked back at you and smiled "That makes two of us."
You smiled softly, glad you were talking again, the previous silence had left you rattled. The only sound was the crunching of leaves under your feet, and the whistling wind around you. It was far too quiet for a forest.
"I'm disappointed I didn't get to see your costume." He commented after a moment.
You rolled your eyes lightly "Who said I was gonna wear a costume?"
He looked at you with a mild look of offense "Well that's just sacrilegious."
You repressed a soft laugh "What were you going to dress up as?"
"Magnum PI"
You let out a laugh "Oh please, you already dress like that normally, that's not a costume!"
"Wha- I do not!"
You cocked your head as you looked at him "Flowery shirts and blue jeans? That's all you wear outside of your uniform."
He opened his mouth to retaliate, but stopped and looked forward again "Shut up." He said softly, not fully serious.
You giggled lightly as you continued to walk through the trees. Looking down at your feet you swallowed "Is it just me or is this fog getting thicker?"
He looked down as well and hook his head "It's not just you." He looked around "We need to find somewhere to sleep."
"Yeah, I don't think I'll be able to sleep out here."
He sighed a little "Me either. Well we need to find somewhere to at least wait it out, I can't tell how high up we are, it's too dark."
Just as you opened your mouth, you heard a high pitch screech coming from within the trees, causing both you and Rooster to freeze, and hold your breath.
Your heart began pounding heavily in your chest, and without realizing it, you had reached over and grabbed Roosters arm.
"Please tell me that was just a fox."
"That was just a fox." He said quickly, though you could tell he was trying to convince himself too.
You had heard plenty of foxes in your time, and that noise wasn't quite right. It sounded less animalistic than it did human.
"Keep walking." He whispered softly as he began to walk.
You stumbled forward, trying to stay close to him. You kept your eyes in the darkness of the trees, watching for any movement.
Rooster looked back to check on you, he glanced down to your hand gripping his arm and smiled softly. Reaching up, he placed his hand over yours, providing further comfort to both of you. You may not be in the most ideal situation, but at least he was with you.
You both stumbled to a stop as you heard the sound of tumbling rocks from nearby. Dragging you over to a tree, you both crouched and looked out, barely able to see anything in the growing darkness.
"Fuck, what was that." He whispered.
"Rock slide?"
"But what caused it?"
"I don't want to know." Looking around, you whispered "Maybe we should just climb a tree, we'd be safer."
Rooster looked up, seeing how high the branches were, he shook his head "Can't reach."
You looked up as well and sighed, "Well what do we do?"
He looked back at you "We could stay here?"
You leaned back against the tree and looked around, there was a small empty space around you, you could see if anything came out of the trees. "Should we build a fire?"
"Might be too dangerous."
You let out a soft groan "I hate this."
He leaned against the tree beside you "Me too."
As another screech echoed through the trees, you flinched and grabbed Roosters arm again "That was closer."
"Yup. Not staying here." As he began to stand, you rose with him.
Rushing quietly through the trees, you began to rifle through your pockets. "What are you doing?" Rooster asked softly.
"I just remembered I usually have a flashlight on me."
"Why?"
"For in the jet, if we fly at night and the breakers go out I gotta be able to see, ah! Here it is!"
As Rooster looked at the small flashlight in you hand he looked at you with a blank face "That's it?"
You frowned a bit "Do you have a bigger one?"
"No."
"Then stop complaining."
Turning it on, you pointed it ahead of you, surprised and glad at how bright the small flashlight was. As you made your way through some small trees, you tried to keep your breathing quiet, wanting to be able to hear clearly if something was around you.
Hearing the sound of creaking branches, you both paused and peered into the forest. Shining your light towards the noise, you hoped silently you would see a deer, or something to ease your fears.
Seeing nothing, and hearing no more noise, Rooster whispered softly "Let's keep going."
As you continued through the trees, you noticed they began to thin out as you saw a rocky cliff appear nearby.
"Maybe there is somewhere over there we could stay." Rooster spoke.
Feeling him grab your hand as he lead you towards the wall, you felt your anxiety lessen a bit. Following him as you climbed up a small boulder-like area, you looked around.
"This is good." Rooster began as he looked further up the cliff behind you "Off the ground, rock wall behind us, yeah, we'll be safer here."
You nodded, agreeing. It was definitley better than being in the middle of the forest. Putting your flashlight in your mouth, you used it to shine on the wall above you. Carefully and slowly, the two of you climbed up, about fifteen feet off the ground.
As you and Rooster sat down, backs against the rocks, you finally took the chance to breath. "How far do you think we've walked?"
"A mile at least, mostly up hill."
"Why do I feel like I've run a marathon?"
"That'll be the adrenaline."
You let out a soft groan as you leaned your forehead against his shoulder. He looked down at you, watching you for a moment with a soft smile. Pressing a soft kiss to your temple, before he rested his head against yours he let out a soft breath.
"We'll be out of here soon."
You nodded softly, wanting to believe him. Swiveling your head, he moved his and met your eyes. He smiled softly, hoping to comfort you.
You smiled in return "I'm just glad I'm out here with you, and not alone."
"Me too."
Hearing a soft rustling in the woods below you, your head shot up as you stared into the trees, unable to see anything. You knew Rooster heard it too, as he held his breath.
When no other sound came, you let out a soft breath. "Could have been a deer..."
"Yeah, or a fox."
Listening for a moment, you felt a small chill go up your spine. "I hate that it's so quite. There should be more noise right? Birds, bugs, anything."
Rooster hadn't noticed just how quiet it was, until you said this. Listening he felt his chest clench "You're right, there's nothing. The only time everything goes quiet, is when-"
"Don't you dare." You cut him off, knowing exactly what he was saying.
"Maybe it's because we're here." He said, trying to comfort you.
"Or because there's something worse." You mumbled, regretting it instantly as another screeching howl came from the woods, just below you in the darkness.
"Fuck." He whispered under his breath.
You gripped onto each other as you turned off your flashlight. Your eyes began to adjust to the darkness, as a pale light was cast over the area by the rising moon.
Silently telling yourself that whatever was in the woods sounded scarier than it was. Just because it didn't sound like a fox, didn't mean it wasn't. And it was unlikely it would be able to climb up the cliff side like you had.
You could hear footsteps in the trees below you, as whatever you heard was walking around. Turning and heading back, you realized it was pacing, stalking. It knew you were here.
As a guttural growl seemed to ripple from the animal, you felt a chill run through you. Feeling Rooster moving, you glanced over at him, seeing him reaching into his pocket. Your heart-skipped a beat when you saw him pull out his jack knife, gripping it in his hands. You swallowed as you looked back down towards the trees.
Your eyes widened and your breath hitched, when from within the darkness your saw a pair of glowing eyes reflecting in the moonlight. It was tall, and big. Not a fox. A wolf maybe. But it was alone, and you don't recall wolves ever sounding like this thing did.
Roosters hand was tightly clasped around yours as you both remained still, watching the creature below you, as it stared unwavering up at the two of you.
Your breathing and heart beat was so heavy and loud in your own ears that you could hear nothing else. You refused to close your eyes for even a second as you kept your gaze locked with whatever the creature was below you.
Just as the creature seemed to begin creeping closer, your whole body flinched closer to the rock beneath you when a large helicopter flew past over head.
Looking up, you felt a mix of fear and relief, hoping you weren't just moving fro one dangerous situation to another.
A the helicopter turned around, and came back towards you, hovering, a bright light shining down on you. From the lights on the helicopter, you could see it wasn't an enemy aircraft. They had come to get you after all.
Your eyes quickly moved from the helicopter to the forest floor below. The eyes were no longer visible, the creature had retreated.
You and Rooster locked eyes as relief washed over you. Your hands were still clasped together as you silently acknowledged that neither of you had any idea what you escaped that night. And neither of you really wanted to know.
