Valerie Jaudon is an original member of the Pattern and Decoration movement. Her art has been written about consistently in books, journals, magazines, newspapers, and catalogs. She is the co-author, with Joyce Kozloff, of the widely anthologized Art Hysterical Notions of Progress and Culture (1978), in which she and Kozloff explained how they thought sexist and racist assumptions underlaid Western art history discourse. They reasserted the value of ornamentation and aesthetic beauty - qualities assigned to the feminine sphere.

XVI to XVIII Spanish rythms: Zarabanda/Sarabanda
The sarabande (zarabanda) is a dance in triple metre from the Baroque period, which developed during the 16th and 17th centuries, and enjoyed great popularity thoughout the 18th century and even early 19th century. Its exact origins are unknown, but most scholars agree that it originated in the Spanish America (Central America), from where it was promptly exported to Spain. In the mid-late 17th cent. the French court received a huge influence coming from Spain, more so in fashion and musical rythms. The Sarabande became particularly popular in the French court because of the double influence Spain and Italy exerted in the country, as the Sarabande had already made its way to the Italian Peninsula in the previous century, adn Italian music was highly popular and appreciated at the time. In France, it will disassociate itself from its roots as a dance of the people, and it will thereafter be developed within cultured music, becoming one of the essential movements of the suites (dance ensembles), as well as being included in pieces for soloist and in court ballets. This model spread throughout Europe, in countries like England or Germany.

A tender little sketch I did of Fyoden and Connell before bed last night. Had a long difficult day and needed a wee bit of quiet comfort.
[Also something gentle from a personal favourite composer to accompany this picture].
