8/20/22: It was 50 years this month, August of 1972, Bob Seger would release his fifth (wha?) album ‘Smokin’ O.P.s’. Although Mr. Seger has had four previous records, this is the first that I am reviewing. I think the record signifies a mild emergence from the Bob Seger Dark Ages between ‘Ramblin’ Gamblin’ Man’ and the ‘Live Bullet’ album of 1975, which was the start of his breakthrough to Arena Rock stardom (and a BIT of cheesiness in the 1980s... but I digress). ‘O.P.S’s stands for Other People’s Songs, and it is true that this is mostly a cover album. This record was a mildly happy surprise as I didn’t have much faith in Seger... I like some of his hits, and the ‘Night Moves’ album (which I won’t get to) is good all the way through, as is ‘Stranger In Town’, but he himself has such a retrograde stance about Rock music that I think I have a bias against him. He always wants us to “take those old records off the shelves" and says that today’s music “ain’t got the same soul”... ugh. That said (rant over), this record has some good songs, and there really aren’t any bad ones, albeit his two originals are kinda so-so, the sappy-ass ‘Someday’ and the somewhat generic ‘Heavy Music’. His cover of Stephen Stills ‘Love the One You’re With’ is decent... and I really like his medley of ‘Bo Diddley’ / ‘Who Do You Love’, and same for Tim Hardin’s ‘If I Were a Carpenter’... the Bob Seger sound through the rest of the 70s has its roots in ‘Carpenter’, as this sounds like the Silver Bullet band here. Finally, Seger’s treatment of ‘Turn On Your Love Light’ is decent and certainly as listenable as a live Grateful Dead version... it’s good. And that’s what I say overall about this album... good.

Okay this is a really personal thing and I usually only talk like this on my Twitter, but to whoever needs to hear it:

You matter, and people care about you. Sometimes it's hard to believe that, especially when things are hard and you don't care about yourself. It's true, though, you could reach out to someone and never talk to them again, and they could still remember you and your kindness, and it could profoundly affect them.

And to whoever needs to hear it: I know it feels like the end of the world when you make a mistake, but that's a part of being human. It sucks, but I'm learning that the more you retrace that regret, and obsess about your shortcomings, and beat yourself up about it, and wish you could go back or fix it, the more you'll hurt yourself and the people who were affected by your mistake. All that you can do is own it, and work on things.

There is no undo button, and that's hard, but eventually the paint will dry, and then you can go back and work on that part where you made that mistake (if that's what needs to be done) and you can learn from the experience and apply it to the future.

i remember being a dmc fan on tumblr when dmc5 didnt exist yet. twas a quiet fandom and there werent many gifsets nor fanart out there. not much content basically. im glad dmc5 exists. that game is perfection for real! and the fact that dmc5 reeled in more people to dmc just makes me so happy ^_^

Gin's 2023 sappy post

It's hard for me to believe that at the beginning of this year, I didn't know a single one of my best friends in the world existed. But it's true!

How we got here

I'm not quite sure exactly when I started looking up Pedro Pascal on Tumblr, but it was sometime after February. I'd watched Game of Thrones and Oberyn was my favorite character, but I was in one of my periods of not being on Tumblr (I've had this account for about 10 years, but it's seen many fandoms and I haven't always been active).

I watched the first few episodes of The Last of Us that had come out - I was 3 episodes behind I think - and immediately looked up Joel Miller on Tumblr. How could I not? Anyway, give me ten minutes on this hellsite and a middle aged man with a huge imdb and watch me develop a hyperfixation.

So then I looked up interviews. I watched basically every interview this man ever did, but I remember that the Lie Detector interview and his appearance on the Talk Easy podcast are really what did me in. I went from admiring this man as an actor and thinking he's pretty to basically being in love with him.

Anyways....

I didn't mean to start reading fanfic? I come from the world of Destiel on AO3. I never wrote it, I just read copious amounts of it. I'd never read reader insert, much less straight reader insert, and I'd never written a word of anything even resembling a fanfiction.

But I found @prolix-yuy, @frannyzooey, @joelscruff, @fuckyeahdindjarin, and @ezrasbirdie (check the spreadsheet, y'all are at the very top!) and I was hooked.

Then I read Psychomanteum by @whatsnewalycat and Celestial Navigation by @write-and-buried and was inspired to parade my trauma around in a Dieter shaped trench coat: AGOY was born.

@beskarandblasters is the first person I really talked to on here. In fact, Kel is the one who introduced me to most of my friends on here. And we've been harassing each other on the daily since. I hope to 🦵 her in real life someday soon ❤️. I love you, bitch. You mean the world to me.

I could never ever ever list all of my dear friends I've made on here. Seriously, there are so many of you that mean the world to me. But I'm gonna list a few.

My cannibal crew @pr0ximamidnight and @atinylittlepain, without whom Love as Violence Dave (starving season), Head up his Ass Javi (in the a.m.), and the later editions of loser druggie Dieter (AGOY) would not exist - or at least they wouldn't be as good as they are.

My darling soup snake, the loml, my spider twin, my forever partner in making bitches cry (it's us, we're bitches, making each other cry in an endless loop) @ramblers-lets-get-ramblin. #1 AGOY stan forever, you may love my own magnum opus more than I love it. Thanks for listening to me scream about every pedro boy on the planet and thanks for screaming right back at me. I love you.

The random college student I found by accident, decided to take under my wing, and then was subsequently taken under their wing bc it turns out they have more fandom experience and life advice than I can ever hope to have @idolatrybarbie. Bea, my darling, thanks for always letting me bitch, for showing me fics I never thought I'd be into (The Santa Claus AU Frankie Morales Free Use Kink, anyone) but that I often was into, for encouraging my writing, and for being fucking real with me.

The pedrostories crew, but especially @pedrorascal - I love screaming about Pedro with you at... 2:30 in the morning my time (we love time zones!). Thanks for letting me be a terrible mod for your fic archive blog and never getting mad at me for not doing my job. And for being a wonderful, kind, amazing person all the fucking time.

I'm being so serious when I say I could list at least 20 more people. People who brightened my day with a reblog or a message. Or who wrote a fic I still think about at least once a week. Or who made a gifset that is permanently etched into my brain. People I talked to in discords and most likely trauma dumped on and they listened and they cared and they let me hold their trauma in return. I love you guys so fucking much.

Conclusion

I never could have imagined I'd be a writer and run a fic rec blog at 24. Especially not for Pedro Pascal Characters. But here we are -- and I can honestly say it has been the highlight of my year. And I bought a house this year.

I have so many new friends and a new hobby (I never wrote at all before this) just because I wanted to Fuck That Old Man. Incredible.

Shiraishi, aka, one of the best boys you’ll ever see?? Biggest doof?? I love This Man

Favorite Thing: Is it bad to say that I kind of adore his humor? Not only is most of the comic relief he’s involved in absolute gold, but it goes a long way on two fronts- it humanizes him a great degree, endearing himself and making him fit right in with Asirpa and Sugimoto as part of a little found family, and it covers up the fact that underneath his goofiness, Shiraishi can be an incredibly calculating, cautious person.

Like we joke about him being a dumbass, and he is, but he has a plethora of skills that can’t be ignored- not only as the Escape King, but in his quick deductions of situations and weighing of his options. The dude is constantly weighing whether or not a course of action is safe, and hell, even if fleeing is his go-to, he’s not afraid to cut a bitch if push comes to shove!! Like seriously, he still has that nail up his sleeve from when he tried to cut Ushiyama, and remember, he just tosses a lit bomb Ienaga’s way during the hotel arc. Like that carries quite a lot of intent behind it. Dude was straight up ready to commit murder. With the lit bomb. His humor makes it easy to underestimate him, which makes things EXCITING!

Least Favorite Thing: His lounging gets on my nerves sometimes. I mean, mood, if I were able to mooch off of some more experienced hunters and chill around with a sweet old granny all day, or drink booze in town while gathering intel, I’d do the same thing, but at the same time his laziness is. Hm. Especially the times when he tries a get rich quick scheme and loses himself to selfishness (horse race arc). Still, this seems to be something that is being remedied, as Shiraishi travels with Asirpa and grows as a person- after all, he wanted to escape with Asirpa!! So I’m excited to see his development

Favorite Line: When Shiraishi comes rushing back in Karafuto arc saying, “Hey! Wait for me!” After he’s given the chance to run away without Asirpa. It marks such a grand bit of character development- after all, up until he’s known Sugimoto and Asirpa, he’s always chosen the selfish route that saves his own hide. This scene showed that now, he’s found someone and something he wants to protect, even at the expense of his own guaranteed safety and I just weep

brOTP: Tsukishima and Shiraishi. Listen to me. Are you listening? If Tsukishima defects Shiraishi is defs gonna be on the front lines of befriending him and also I love the idea of Tsukishima begrudgingly learning some of Shiraishi’s tricks for escape because he understands and respects that Shiraishi can be a bit dangerous. Also, he and Tsukishima have a lot in common- both have no long term goals, and both work better when they have a task given to them by someone overseeing them. Also they’d likely have a last two braincells dynamic together and I can’t wait

And as a bonus, Shiraishi and Asirpa’s friendship makes my heart glow. At this point it’s a classic case of “Oh Shit I Caught Paternal Feelings”. Love Asirpa and her two gay dads with no braincells between them.

OTP: SugiShira. Is this a contest? Is this really? Shiraishi and Sugimoto have great chemistry, not only as close friends who go through a lot together, but as romantic partners. They’re both sappy idiot romantics. They both love hanging out together. It’s a damn good match. Plus, after the events of Karafuto, they’ll have a greater understanding of one another and a stronger bond over their mutual care for Asirpa and getting out of this hunt alive… Also, some runners up are TsukiShira (just because of the “Igogusa is Shiraishi” au), ShiraKoi, ShiraTani, and ShiraKiro. He’s a damn capable bachelor ;)

nOTP: I mean if I’m really pressed, TsuruShira maybe? But otherwise, I can see almost every Shiraishi ship. Dude’s the most eligible bachelor in gk it just works

Random headcanon: He knew that chasing after the nun was a futile endeavor. I mean, nuns are giving themselves to God and whatnot- that’s hard to miss. Even if he believed Kumagashi was a shit artist, he knew he would never truly romance her- the reason he was so adamant about chasing her down, escaping prison after prison, is because it honestly just gave him something to do other than slowly rot away in a cell. Every escape, he’d tell himself, “This time, I won’t look for her. I’ll do something with my life. I’ll turn over a new leaf and just do something.” But he never knew what to do, or what job to take, or where to apply himself. And so, frustrated, he goes back to looking for his nun, trying to reignite feelings of fleeting passion so that at least he had something familiar. At least, like that, he was doing something- even if he kept running away every time.

Unpopular Opinion: Every time I see art or fic where Shiraishi is replaced by Ogata I die a little inside. Like if you wanna include Ogata with the main golden trio, fine, sure, power to you- but don’t just shove Shiraishi out of there!! He’s not replaceable!! He’s one of the main three protagonists for a reason, and to replace him with Ogata, known son of a bitch and bastard who wouldn’t know family if it hit him in the dick, is doing Shiraishi a disservice.

Song I Associate with him: Ramblin’ Man, by the Allman Brothers Band. It’s such a fun, chill song, fitting the life of a wanderer that Shiraishi has thus far taken on! Plus, it espouses a bit of flexibility too, about the role he’s been taking in the story, rambling from group to group but always finding his way home.

Favorite Picture: Could there be a more perfect image?

The joke is, I’m also a sucker for romance, and I know if Sugimoto saw this he’d be going insane.
