Boulders Penguin Colony in der Nähe von Kapstadt beherbergt 3.000 afrikanische Pinguine – aber wird sie dem Hype gerecht? Der „afrikanische Pinguin“ ist ein Widerspruch in sich. Irgendwie ist der heißeste Kontinent der Erde die Heimat eines Vogels, der am häufigsten mit dem kältesten in Verbindung gebracht wird: der Antarktis. Und doch haben die drei Pinguinarten, die ich gesehen habe, alle in warmen Gefilden gelebt: der Galápagos-Pinguin vor der Insel Isabela, die direkt am Äquator liegt, der kleine Pinguin im supertrockenen, superheißen Australien und jetzt der afrikanische Pinguin Boulders Penguin Colony in Südafrika. Wenn Sie Kapstadt kennen, kennen Sie die Boulders Penguin Colony in Simon's Town 40 km südlich. Boulders-Pinguin-Kolonie Boulders ist die Heimat einer landgestützten Kolonie von 3.000 afrikanischen Pinguinen. Es ist eines von wenigen auf der Welt und hat sich zu einem beliebten Touristenziel entwickelt. Boulders liegt im Tafelberg-Nationalpark und umfasst drei Strände, einen Aussichtsbereich und Holzstege, die so gestaltet sind, dass der Abstand zwischen Pinguinen und Besuchern gewahrt bleibt. Auf Fotografien der Boulders Penguin Colony scheinen die Vögel den Sand zu bedecken, so viele sind es. Wenn sie nicht faul sind, watscheln sie herum, kippen um, schreien laut und benehmen sich im Allgemeinen wie Statisten für Pixar. Hinter den idyllischen Kulissen verbirgt sich jedoch eine ernüchternde Wahrheit: Ihre Zahl ist so stark gesunken, dass afrikanische Pinguine nun offiziell vom Aussterben bedroht sind. Eine gefährdete Art 1910 gab es schätzungsweise 1,5 Millionen afrikanische Pinguine auf der Welt. 1956 stellte die erste vollständige Zählung der Art fest, dass noch 150.000 Brutpaare übrig waren. Bis 2009 stürzte diese auf 26.000 Brutpaare ab, was einen Verlust von über 80 % in 50 Jahren bedeutet. Im Jahr 2010 wurde der Afrikanische Pinguin offiziell als gefährdet eingestuft. Atlas & Boots Ein afrikanischer Pinguin schlendert am Boulders Beach entlang Die Boulders Penguin Colony wurde „gegründet“, als sich 1982 zwei Brutpaare dort ansiedelten. Die Anzahl der umliegenden Inselkolonien stieg und die Brutzahlen stiegen 2005 auf 3.900 Pinguine. Leider haben die Zahlen wieder abgenommen und liegen derzeit bei etwa 3.000. Ursachen des Niedergangs Der Rückgang des Afrikanischen Pinguins wird durch mehrere Faktoren verursacht. Der Klimawandel und die Überfischung pelagischer Bestände machen die Nahrung knapper, während die Zerstörung von Lebensräumen Kolonien anfällig für Raubtiere, übermäßige Hitze und Überschwemmungen macht. Afrikanische Pinguine leben auch entlang einer wichtigen Öltransportroute und waren Verschütten mit katastrophalen Folgen ausgesetzt. Der Ölteppich der MV Apollo von 1994 soll 5.000 afrikanische Pinguine getötet haben, während der Ölteppich der MV Treasure von 2000 19.000 Pinguine ölte, fast 10 % von ihnen tötete und zur Evakuierung weiterer 19.500 führte, von denen viele danach Parasiten und Vektorarten ausgesetzt waren ins Landesinnere gebracht werden. Die Pinguine in Boulders werden zusätzlich durch Fahrzeuge auf der angrenzenden Straße, Haustiere aus der nahe gelegenen Strandbebauung und unverantwortliches Touristenverhalten (z. B. Selfie-Sticks durch Zäune, Müll, Entfernung von Meereslebewesen und -material) beeinträchtigt. Um zu helfen, erwägen Sie eine Spende an SANCCOB, eine eingetragene gemeinnützige Organisation, die sich zum Ziel gesetzt hat, den Rückgang von Seevogelpopulationen wie dem afrikanischen Pinguin umzukehren. I had the pleasure of visiting the National Aviary in Pittsburgh this past weekend. Seeing as I’m not often on the other side of the state (see: never), I applied for their penguin feeding encounter and was lucky enough to wind up as a group of one. It was exciting and delightful to venture outside of my usual scope of bird experience to work with a species so unlike anything we have naturally occurring here in Pennsylvania. Each penguin had such a distinct personality and preferences for feeding. Sunshine (middle photo), Tribby, Marge, and Stan were particularly friendly. Each bird was wonderful and I thoroughly enjoyed interacting with and learning about them. 

Sadly, African penguins are currently listed as endangered with their population steadily declining in the wild as they cope with threats from oil spills and competition with fisheries. Organizations such as the Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (SANCCOB) are fighting to preserve African penguins and species like them.

“The least movement is of importance to all nature. The entire ocean is affected by a pebble” … . . Blaise Pascal  . .  . The oceans are Mother Earth’s ‘last great wilderness’. These open seas constitute a vast biotope covering more than two thirds of the planet’s surface, but man knows less about the underwater world here than they do of Antarctica. To put things in perspective, a mere 19% of the seabed has been charted, leaving an area twice the size of Mars to still be surveyed (the Nippon Foundation - GEBCO Seabed Project hope to achieve this by 2030). . . Within this vast seascape, untold marine species exist, ranging from microscopic krill to gargantuan whales which, unfathomably, feed on them. Despite the unimaginable immensity of this complex and diverse ecosystem, the ocean is under increasing threat from mankind. As Pascal observed, ‘everything is interconnected’, so every piece of plastic you discard, ends up here as ocean pollution ... . . A couple of weeks ago, I had the opportunity to join the eminent ocean conservationist, @lewis.pugh, on a project where he helped @sanccob to release a number of rehabilitated Cape gannets into the #BigBlue of False Bay. His @lewispughfdn states: “Life as we know it first began in the oceans and all life fundamentally relies on them. The oceans have their own intrinsic value and have a right to be just as they have evolved over millennia: in perfect balance". . . What a privilege to photograph this minute segment of their remarkable #conservation effort & to experience the instinctual drive of these seabirds to be reunited with the ocean. Built way back in 1851, the Cape Recife Lighthouse was originally established to warn passing ships of the dangerous Thunderbolt Reef (named for the HMS Thunderbolt, a British Royal Nave Sail and Paddle Frigate that wrecked at Cape Recife in 1847), a job the venerable (albeit upgraded) lighthouse still admirably performs to this very day.

In 1973, a surrounding 366 hectare large area was proclaimed as the Cape Recife Nature Reserve, thereby transforming Cape Recife into a protected sanctuary for the Summerstrand region’s coastal and marine ecosystems to thrive within.

These days, in addition to the walking routes, countless unspoiled beaches, picnic areas, and accessible to the public lighthouse, the Cape Recife Nature Reserve is also home to the Port Elizabeth branch of SANCCOB (otherwise known as SAMREC), which provides rehabilitation and care facilities for many of the regions coastal bird species.

Seeing how I rather enjoy visiting lighthouses and was after all now in the area (as part of our June 2017 Holiday Adventure), I dragged everyone over to the nature reserve (most who were visiting it for the very first time), where after securing our entry permits, we enjoyed a rather tranquil stroll around the area.

Well not the kids mind you. They were far too busy chasing up and down the sand dunes like energetic little bunnies of course!

Extra: On exiting the nature reserve our initial route to the Grass Roof Farm Stall for a spot of lunch and play was blocked by a rather angry veld fire. Apparently, thanks to the dry seasons Port Elizabeth is also experiencing, wild fires like this is now pretty much a daily occurrence now…

Pisklęta pingwinów przylądkowych z wrocławskiego zoo, którymi opiekuje się fundacja SANCCOB!, nie mają imion. Ogród zoologiczny ogłosił konkurs, w którym propozycje zgłosiły redakcje telewizyjne, radiowe, prasowe i internetowe. Piskląt jest pięć, propozycji imion dwadzieścia. Swoją propozycję zgłosił również polsatnews.pl: dla dziewczynki – Halinka, dla chłopca – Ferdynand. Głosowanie do piątku.
