Well if it's not been made obvious by now, I live and breathe the Touden Elf Sandwich. As I've said before Marcille and Falin are adorable, happy for them, the story never once looks at the camera and tells you what their relationship is but anyone with and without eyes can see exactly what it is, but Laios and Marcille just make me insane.

Like if I tried to go into it I would be here for hours, reduced to incoherent babbling because everything about how they interact with each other, the slight subtle things in how they see each other, especially because it's not as straightforward or easy to figure out as the others.

I think that Laios and Marcille are absolutely in love, but they also have so much shit going on and are wrapped up in so many layers of their respective complexes that it's going to take like, years for them to actually figure that out, and longer than that to, god forbid, do anything about it, if anything even changes at all. And it will definitely require Falin acting as an intermediary because they're so fucking complicated about it.

Love how your plot doc went from three years to two. It seems like all the big life-simulation games “end” at around two years (harvest moon 64, Stardew Valley), it’s like everyone does the same math and finds that two years makes for a nice succinct story, and I love that little coincidence. I wonder if there are other games that fit…

I think you're right that two years just makes the most sense. One year only gives the player one chance to see each season and means the player won't be able to fully engage with spring since it'll take place while they're still orienting themself in the game--obviously not enough time.

Three years really gives the town time to develop, but a farming sim type game requires a relatively slow in-game clock to allow time for the player to do farm chores and run around talking to people. Three years of this makes for quite a long game and risks players becoming bored and quitting before they finish the end of the story.

Two years is a good happy medium--multiple chances for the player to experience each month without dragging on too long. And then if the player is really into it, they can keep playing past the two year mark, but I think it makes the most sense for main story events to wrap up around that two year mark.

Oof, like yesterday. I watched Markiplier's OneShot playthrough and the (first) ending of that game is so fucking SAD and BLEAK. But I cry all the time so it's not that surprising.

Nay. I do not wish to pass on the curse. (The curse is Mental Illness.)

I think so? I speak satirically when I'm criticizing things, if that counts.

No. :( I would love to get a puppy or kitten but it's not a good time for pet ownership.

I've done ballet, baseball, tae kwon do and aikido at high school and below ages. Currently I don't play any, but do wanna start swimming laps soon. Now that I think about it, I kinda miss ballet too but there's no way I'm in any kinda shape to be able to do that safely anymore.

Historian... I honestly love so many different periods of history that it's really hard to pick one to specialize in, but my usual answer to this question is working on rediscovering/translating pre-Christian religious archaeology in Finland.

And also the first book of the Shadow and Bone series ... and this doesn't even include the MANY webcomics I'm trying to catch up on, or any of the non-fiction I've picked up, or anything on my TBR list that I haven't started yet. i'd like to chime in on the viktor post, since it also became a bit of a viktor analysis: one thing that sort of came to my attention re: LoL vs Arcane is that in LoL, i think he's a fun antagonist. but when i watched arcane, i didn't know anything about LoL viktor. i absolutely adored his arc in Arcane; i felt like he wasn't reduced to his disability, he was extremely competent,and while he was definitely hindered by his disability, it wasn’t, like. This horrible, terrible burden he 1/?

suffered from and longed to be free of. He was an intelligent and brilliant inventor, and he also needed to use a cane. and i think that even though he made a mistake with the hexcore, it felt very much like jayce's actions killing a child. in the way that their actions, while they were mistakes, did not make them villains. they were still heroic, even if they made mistakes, because they were humbled due to their hubris and chose to learn from it. which i ADORE. but after reading up LoL lore i'm side-eyeing season two. so far the writing for the characters has been incredibly nuanced and satisfying for me, so i’m not SUPER worried, but i’m hoping that they don’t take viktor to quite the extremes of LoL viktor. I don’t know all of LoL’s lore, but as far as i can tell, Viktor didn’t have the same disabilities Arcane Viktor does -- and i’m a bit wary that they might turn him into a villain on the level of silco. Still nuanced, but certainly not very heroic. And disabled people so rarely get to be heroes! By all means, Viktor creating assistance devices using Hextech until he’s able to basically achieve the same physical feats as able bodied people would be great; but i also don’t want it to be like ‘look he’s cured now ayyy!’ i really hope that instead of that, he and jayce become more like ‘heroes on opposite sides’. LoL Viktor does have some of that nuance (like trying to save the catatonic people with the crystal), but i want that even moreso in Arcane.

i think if the discussion with @hexhomos taught me anything it's that LoL viktor can be a really subtle and multifaceted character! he can also be a mustache twirling villain in some of the 'side' league stories, but given my own comics fandom background i'm perfectly happy viewing that kind of stuff as sort of... dubiously canon. canon when i want it to be to make a point, noncanon when its annoying or breaks my interpretation of a character, lmao.

on the one hand, i wouldn't worry too much (which you said you haven't been) because the writers have done great so far and i don't see any reason that would suddenly change. on the other, arcane was created to tell the story of vi and jinx - everyone else is an afterthought, added because it makes sense for them to be there and they can add to the story, but they're not the focal points. so i can definitely see a portion of fans being disappointed because they feel like viktor didn't get the narrative focus they feel he would have needed to make his turn believable, and this is gonna be the loud portion of 'viktor ooc' fans, if i had to make an educated guess.

(i know i keep bringing up loki in the tags but i'm. so serious. treat the mcu fandom as a case study for this because i have been watching the exact same arguments play out again in real time. 'avengers loki didn't have a believable enough reason to become a villain therefore he's ooc' because we didn't get to see him explicitly tortured by thanos - it was implied, though. they spent exactly as much time on it as was necessary to give us the information we needed without taking the focus away from the actual main characters! i see arcane doing something similar with viktor and the hexcore. the writers are trusting us to be smart enough to pick up on the cues.)

re: his disabilities - we all need to be aware that empowering for me is not necessarily empowering for thee. there are going to be people who disagree with viktor's outcome no matter how arcane chooses to portray it or what they end up doing with his physical disabilities. cure him, don't cure him, lose the focus on his disabilities altogether, continue to focus on them even after his turn, let him keep his humanity, let him go full hal 9000; either way there are going to be people with perfectly valid points who will think they should have done the opposite. i hope that people can come to terms with all possible outcomes before s2 comes out, get cool with the idea that their ideal viktor may not be the one that arcane wants or needs. no matter what we may feel would be 'realistic', we have to keep in mind that he's a fictional character with a role to play in a story, and they're gonna make him play that part no matter how they have to get him there.

I’m not a LoL player but I liked Jayce in Arcane and then read his LoL bio and thought he was a douchebag (unaffectionate). Can I poke your brain a bit about the difference between the two and theories on where Arcane might go, since you’re more familiar with LoL Jayce? Because I can definitely see him and Viktor becoming like, tragic heroic protags on opposite sides in the future of Arcane, ending up similar to LoL (Private or public works)

ooooohohoh thank you so much for enabling me to ramble about this!!

suppose i could start this by saying that i have indeed been a big fan of the league universe for years, with zaun and piltover being my absolute favorite regions. naturally, when i heard there was gonna be an animated show featuring the city of progress and the city of iron and glass, i damn near lost my mind

i think arcane is great! i'm impressed with pretty much everything, mostly the technical and visual aspects of the show, but i will admit that while watching the show i was a bit disappointed by some of the changes i noticed. i've since made peace with most of these changes. those 9 episodes were never gonna be able to fit all the stories they could’ve told with the level of detail i’d been craving, and that’s fine. they had to make the story work even for those with no prior league knowledge, and i do think it works!

arcane jayce underwent some considerable changes and honestly I can’t blame the writers. in the game, jayce is a proper Asshole. he brags about how smart and charming he is, he treats all scientists like they're beneath him when they can't do the things he does, or when they need more time to get there. he cares about progress sure and he does seem to want to protect his hometown, but his personality is detestable in all honesty, the dude can't even bring himself to be nice to kids. with so many red flags here, i can't blame the show runners for looking at this fucken guy and thinking "yeah, maybe... maybe we should make him a bit more likeable".

the result of these changes is a jayce who still maintains some of his charm, still cares about progress and the protection of his city. however, he no longer brags, he's no longer some guy viktor barely tolerates for the sake of saving lives, he's his best bud who will go as far as getting his mentor fired for gatekeeping a possible cure to the illness they invented for viktor in arcane. personally, i think jayce's character suffers from these changes. as obnoxious as he is in the game, he does have a very strong characterization, and he only brags because he genuinely is as smart as he claims, and he’s bored that nobody can challenge and engage him (except viktor). you come to hate jayce because of how he is, but you kind of have to respect his results. i prefer this version of jayce because here he’s the opposite of viktor, whose personality you might come to love like i do (this man once prepared sweet milk with a death ray for himself and a child who snuck into his lair... it doesn't get any more camp than that fellas) but whose results are uuuuh,,,, QUESTIONABLE? yeah, let's use that word.

in the game, viktor and jayce are somehow both the same person and exact opposites. they are both brilliant inventors, giant loners, they go on to be revered by many people (viktor as robo jesus, jayce as piltover's metroman) and neither seem to like it. but then, jayce supports intuition, while viktor pushes for logic. jayce is a topsider who gets taken in by one of the most influential clans in piltover, viktor is from the undercity and gets taken in by a piltie professor who steals some of his best work. jayce is flamboyant and full of himself, viktor cares so much about his physical appearance that he didn't think twice before exchanging it all for metal. they work beautifully together until they don't, and their bitter rivalry was always one of my favorite dynamics in the game.

in the show, their friendship takes away a lot of what i found interesting about both of these characters. yeah, jayce is more likeable now, but he kind of feels like a bowl of white rice. the brash attitude was all he had going for him, at least it was fun to hate him. in the show he just sort of… exists? in act 1 he’s fine, but after that he’s pretty much just a plot device in a white coat. he wants war when mel's mom tells him to push for it because we need the drama with the dead kid and whatnot, then when the council is about to be blown to bits by a zaunite, he pushes for peace with zaun because, once again, we need more drama for the cliffhanger. the story needs him to change ideas quickly and as a result any development he does get feels weak. like, even his relationship with viktor feels weak to me! they’re supposed to be best friends, “like brothers” and all that, but… jayce does that thing with heimerdinger to help viktor, but the two never discuss it. jayce speaks poorly to viktor about his people, viktor hides things from jayce. they don’t talk about the dead kid or the (super dumb) thing that happened with sky. it would be fine if this was happening to cause a rift between them, but by the end of arcane, they’re standing together bonding over how they failed to do good in the pursuit of greatness (which I still don’t think makes sense in viktor’s case but I digress) and presenting a peace treaty to the council as piltovian-zaunite partners. either start to break them up or try to make me believe they’re actually good friends, you can’t do both!!!

it's difficult for me to predict what will happen in season 2, because the story has both stayed true to its core themes *and* steered just far enough that it still manages to surprise the most seasoned of league players. provided they both survive the explosion, the writers have to find a way to break them up somehow. in the game lore, this happens when viktor's moral compass (or lack thereof) clashes with jayce's, so maybe we'll see something along those lines. it seems like these storytellers are trying hard to make viktor a tragic but ultimately sympathetic character (and though i disagree with their methods, i am SO glad to see they thought of this) so whatever happens will probably start small and only mildly concerning. they still have to cure viktor, and I honestly have no idea how they intend to do that. my only hope is the cure won’t be “replace more and more parts of my body with metal ones to fight this disease and woops there goes all my humanity” because that’s literally orianna’s lore. if the void shit from the hexcore magically cures him, I *will* laugh my ass off.

maybe viktor looks for a way to stop the pain he must be in by engineering a way to never feel any pain ever again. maybe he cuts off the spooky void leg and hand and replaces them with metallic versions, which most pilties seem to see as a bad thing

idk man i'm curious myself. i really, really want the whole stolen work thing to happen, there’s potential for good drama there with jayce not standing up for his only friend for whatever reason they choose, but the professor who stole viktor's invention is dead in arcane (it’s the statue guy from the opening scene of episode 4) so ????

i'm looking forward to season 2, but with low expectations as far as these 2 are concerned. it’s not like they’re # ruined per se, the versions of jayce and viktor from arcane are fine and season 2 might make me love them again, who knows. for now though, i much prefer the versions that exist inside my head and the league universe website, so fingers crossed they don't rewrite those anytime soon. thankfully, arcane has a BUNCH of other cool characters that i love who have been handed beautifully thus far (all the changes to ekko have been 10000/10) so i always have something to be excited for!

Development has certainly been more time-consuming than we’d hoped--I repeatedly failed to follow the old programmer adage of “take whatever you assume is a reasonable amount of time, then multiply it by three” when providing estimated completion dates (because surely if I just worked really hard it would get done faster, right?)--but we hope that regular updates can help assure folks that the work on the project is still being worked on at a steady rate.

Here’s the latest playtime on Steam, if anyone’s interested! (Not included: hundreds of hours spriting, hundreds of hours writing, and I-don’t-know-how-many hours clocked on my sister’s copy of the game before I bought it myself) :P

But yeah, we’re super excited about getting it out, too! It’s agonizing being so close to being able to start putting together a public beta, but still many, many, many hours of work away... I think/hope people will enjoy the game once it’s available, though!
