I initially said this in the tags of someone’s fanart, but…

When you watch the RWBY trailers, none of then miss, but Yang’s trailer has a VERY different tone than the others. Partially in how it’s arranged, and partly in how it barely tells you anything about her.

I’m gonna start from the top here — first off, the trailers are clearly a progression. Ruby’s was in some ways just proof of concept for the show, but it also gave us the absolute least information as a result. The Red trailer has Ruby wearing a design that still gets tweaked, the song has four lines and they’re more about the whole team than Ruby herself (and even then more about the allusions than the characters in many ways), the designs for the Beowolves/Grimm aren’t yet crystallized as we know them. The Red trailer told us about RWBY, the show, but not Ruby the character.

Like, Red and White don’t even have speech — the songs are the only dialogue. But Weiss’s obviously tells us more; because the song has more lyrics, because she’s singing it in universe, because of the announcer at the beginning who tells us just a little bit of who she is.

And then things change with Blake’s trailer. It’s got the song and the very informative lyrics, but most of the dialogue is actual dialogue. Blake isn’t the only character present. She’s not fighting faceless monsters, but automated robots that are acting as security, which gives us a much better idea of the technological advances made in-universe. We see a whole cool biome in Forever Fall, and we meet a new character in Adam — even if the relationship is being ended as we watch, we do learn a lot about Blake. Plus, her quote most directly relates to the content of the trailer itself.

In some ways, the amount of info we get per trailer is progressively ramping up, right? So it makes sense that in Yang’s trailer, we get multiple characters with unique names and faces, a cool setting, a good bit of dialogue and even an explicit reason for the conflict.

Except we don’t get the actual reason for conflict fully explained until Volume 2. We know Yang is looking for someone, but we don’t know it’s Raven until far later. And Yang sharing that story wasn’t for her own benefit, but Blake’s! Even when Yang gives information about herself, it’s not for herself.

What do we see Yang do in her trailer? She fakes flirting with a guy, twice, just to beat him up. She orders a drink, demands information, starts a fight when she doesn’t get it, throws down with the DJ and two snotty mean girls. She gets mad about losing her golden hair after fighting the three bears — we get an explicit look at her fairy tale allusion at least. And then, crucially, we learn Yang’s name through Ruby. Her sister. Yang is the main character’s big sister, and that’s the last real bit of information we get. The trailer ends with Yang casually avoiding any meaningful explanations. The song is barely even hers! We get one minute of if I Burn, but the rest of the Yellow trailer is backed by remixes of the other three trailer songs. Yang is being defined by her relationships to other characters, but we don’t actually learn a whole lot about those, either. Because her trailer is Yang against the world, with her sister only there after the battle ends.

Yang is telling us nothing about who she actually is — what motivates her, her friends, her enemies. The conflict behind the fight is opened and shut in five minutes, and we don’t know the greater underlying reason for it at all. Yang only shows us that mask of the dumb party girl that she wears in the early volumes, which some people got fooled into thinking was her real character.

In some ways, though, we learn a lot about her. Because by flirting with Junior just to get him close enough to threaten and hit him — twice — she does tell us that the party girl mask is just that: an illusion. A facade she puts up to trick people dumb enough to underestimate her. Yang embraces her mask of the dumb party girl, then adds on the doting big sister. We see so much, but learn so little.

Yang doesn’t even hold the focus of her trailer at the end. Because the last moments of Yang’s trailer are the first times we hear Ruby speak.

RWBY Malachite Twins REAL Allusion

Ok so I was just randomly watching the Yellow Trailer today and everything just hit me at once so I’m just writing down whatever I came up with during that time.

So Yang is based off of Goldilocks, right. And her Trailer is based on the story. Goldilocks (Yang) gets to the house (club) and breaks everything (nuts/people/club itself/etc) and comes upon the bears (DJ, Junior). It took a while, but people were eventually able to catch onto the storytelling going on in the trailer. The one thing they were having trouble with was where the Malachite Twins fit into the equation. And although there has seem to been an agreed allusion found, I believe it can be driven into something BIGGER.

Basic research will reveal that they are based on Rose Red and Snow White. The pair come across a bear and take care of it, with the bear eventually revealing himself to be a prince. On the surface, this can easily be translated to Melanie and Militia being bodyguards of Junior, the bear manager (prince) of the club. Yeah cool whatever.

But guys, this is Yang’s trailer. This is the Goldilocks story. So where do they fit in?

The Malachite Twins are TOO HOT and TOO COLD

In the Goldilocks story, the young girl tries some of the bear family’s porridge. She complains that the dad’s food is “too hot” and the mom’s is “too cold”. But when she gets to the Baby Bear’s bowl, it’s “just right”. In the Yellow Trailer, Yang fights the twins, too hot (Militia, Red) and too cold (Melanie, White), to get to her real opponent, Baby Bear (Junior).

The creators have confirmed that Yang didn't even know she was attracted to girls until Volume 9, but yes. She is canonically a lesbian.

Some actual lesbians who've analyzed her character points out that her comment about her allegedly being into boys could just as easily be her trying to FORCE herself to feel some kind of attraction. Additionally, the Spirits of Knowledge and Creation are both nude (albeit with Barbie Doll Anatomy).

The Spirit of Knowledge is a woman, and Yang is stunned upon laying eyes upon her for the first time. Upon seeing the male Spirit of Creation, on the other hand, Yang is completely unimpressed.

Also, that time she implies she "approves of the boys" the night before initiation is the one and ONLY time she has ever shown anything resembling heterosexual attraction.

Every single time she's ever flirted with a boy has lead into her beating them up because she was specifically trying to trick them into lowering their guard.

She absolutely CANNOT keep her composure when flirting with someone she's actually attracted to, as shown by her interactions with Blake.

Blake is also canonically the first person Yang has ever been sexually attracted to, and she was basically enamored with her on sight.

Ha!

"Yes Junior, I have several. But instead of sweetheart, you could just call me ma'am!" Goldilocks told the little bear before squeezing his hand with all her strength. She didn't even need to use her Aura to hear a bone crack.

"I have blackmail on everyone in this clubhouse, so don't bother calling security." Goldilocks whispered into the bear's ear. "People say you know everything, tell me where I can find her," Goldilocks stated, pulling up a photo of her target, "and I'll let you go!"

"I've never seen her before I swear!"

"That's not good enough!!!"

"I've never seen her before I swear, ma'am!"

Then, all the baby bears came crawling, all eyes on Goldilocks.

"Hmm, looks like we have an audience. This must be kind of embarrassing for you, huh? Awkward!"

"squeel listen blondie, ma'am, if you wanna make it out of this club alive, I suggest you let me go, Now!" The little bear stuttered at Goldilocks. How cute! The girl couldn't help but let him go.

"Uhh, you'll pay for that." The little bear said to Goldilocks.

"Oh, Junior I was just playing with you! Don't be so sensitive!"

"And the blackmail?"

"C'mon, you really thought a girl like me had any blackmail on you? Haha, you fell for it!"

The bear turned to leave in a huff, but suddenly,

"Hey, lets kiss and make up, ok?" Goldilocks offered to the little bear.

"Huh, ok..."

The little bear leaned in for a kiss. But just before their lips made contact...

Punch!!!

The little bear flew into a glass column and crashed onto the floor. Goldilocks thought that should teach him for trying to kiss a little girl.

The men surrounded Goldilocks. The house music started blasting. This next song and dance was something Goldilocks knew by heart...

Black, the beast descends from shadows.

Yellow, beauty burns Gold

Right-hook! Double-knuckle!! Roundhouse-kick!!!

Goldilocks thought this dance was the most fun she had in years! And across the house, she was about to find new dance partners.

"Melanie, who is this girl?" Rose red asked to her sister, Snow white. "Idunno, Miltia. But we should teach her a lesson."

Goldilocks reloaded her weapon. This would be fun.

Goldilocks and the little bear both flew out the house. Goldilocks thought that should teach him for pulling her hair!

"Yang?" a familiar voice called out. "Is that you???"

Also, while I’ve got Yang on the brain - I absolutely hate that they cut the Yellow trailer events. I have complaints about how they handled Blake’s (that will be in another post) but WHY would you cut Yang’s????

Yellow was the start of establishing the legacy of Summer and Raven, and the scars their absence has left on their kids. That setup made Yang’s conversation with Blake in Burning the Candle so much more meaningful, at least in my eyes. It was showing Yang is capable of being ruthless, really demonstrating the temper that has caused mistakes in the past.

I can understand not needing to rehash the whole fight - we didn’t need to see the Malachites or Junior’s combat styles - but the information gathering regarding Raven and (accidentally) Torchwick was important.

They might not go as far as Volume 2 with Ice Queendom, but the Yellow Trailer was still an important establishment for a lot of character and plot, and they’re missing. Yang got so little focus compared to the rest of team RWBY, and I’m a little mad about it.
