I initially said this in the tags of someone’s fanart, but…
When you watch the RWBY trailers, none of then miss, but Yang’s trailer has a VERY different tone than the others. Partially in how it’s arranged, and partly in how it barely tells you anything about her.
I’m gonna start from the top here — first off, the trailers are clearly a progression. Ruby’s was in some ways just proof of concept for the show, but it also gave us the absolute least information as a result. The Red trailer has Ruby wearing a design that still gets tweaked, the song has four lines and they’re more about the whole team than Ruby herself (and even then more about the allusions than the characters in many ways), the designs for the Beowolves/Grimm aren’t yet crystallized as we know them. The Red trailer told us about RWBY, the show, but not Ruby the character.
Like, Red and White don’t even have speech — the songs are the only dialogue. But Weiss’s obviously tells us more; because the song has more lyrics, because she’s singing it in universe, because of the announcer at the beginning who tells us just a little bit of who she is.
And then things change with Blake’s trailer. It’s got the song and the very informative lyrics, but most of the dialogue is actual dialogue. Blake isn’t the only character present. She’s not fighting faceless monsters, but automated robots that are acting as security, which gives us a much better idea of the technological advances made in-universe. We see a whole cool biome in Forever Fall, and we meet a new character in Adam — even if the relationship is being ended as we watch, we do learn a lot about Blake. Plus, her quote most directly relates to the content of the trailer itself.
In some ways, the amount of info we get per trailer is progressively ramping up, right? So it makes sense that in Yang’s trailer, we get multiple characters with unique names and faces, a cool setting, a good bit of dialogue and even an explicit reason for the conflict.
Except we don’t get the actual reason for conflict fully explained until Volume 2. We know Yang is looking for someone, but we don’t know it’s Raven until far later. And Yang sharing that story wasn’t for her own benefit, but Blake’s! Even when Yang gives information about herself, it’s not for herself.
What do we see Yang do in her trailer? She fakes flirting with a guy, twice, just to beat him up. She orders a drink, demands information, starts a fight when she doesn’t get it, throws down with the DJ and two snotty mean girls. She gets mad about losing her golden hair after fighting the three bears — we get an explicit look at her fairy tale allusion at least. And then, crucially, we learn Yang’s name through Ruby. Her sister. Yang is the main character’s big sister, and that’s the last real bit of information we get. The trailer ends with Yang casually avoiding any meaningful explanations. The song is barely even hers! We get one minute of if I Burn, but the rest of the Yellow trailer is backed by remixes of the other three trailer songs. Yang is being defined by her relationships to other characters, but we don’t actually learn a whole lot about those, either. Because her trailer is Yang against the world, with her sister only there after the battle ends.
Yang is telling us nothing about who she actually is — what motivates her, her friends, her enemies. The conflict behind the fight is opened and shut in five minutes, and we don’t know the greater underlying reason for it at all. Yang only shows us that mask of the dumb party girl that she wears in the early volumes, which some people got fooled into thinking was her real character.
In some ways, though, we learn a lot about her. Because by flirting with Junior just to get him close enough to threaten and hit him — twice — she does tell us that the party girl mask is just that: an illusion. A facade she puts up to trick people dumb enough to underestimate her. Yang embraces her mask of the dumb party girl, then adds on the doting big sister. We see so much, but learn so little.
Yang doesn’t even hold the focus of her trailer at the end. Because the last moments of Yang’s trailer are the first times we hear Ruby speak.

Mmmmm been having some thoughts on Ruby and Weiss rn
Ruby is set up to be foiled to Alyx, both in the opening, trying to retrace her footsteps in her story in the first couple of episodes, picking up Alyx's knife at the blacksmith's:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tumblr media
And in the latest episode, her lashing out being met with her intepreted as being cruel and selfish:
"Like Alyx, she wasn’t just a little petulant or inconsiderate. She was selfish, cruel. Like this whole word was simply make-believe and the rules didn’t apply to her."
"What about you? It's *all* about you!"
JWBY all seem to have different ideas of who and what Alyx was. She exists to teach a moral lesson, she's just a girl trying to survive and find her way back home, she was a mean little girl, she was the villain who rewrote the story.
But then we also have this line from the book said by Oscar in V8:
"She brushed off her bumps and bruises, for nothing hurt worse than the loneliness in her chest."
And... I'm reminded of Ruby's own loneliness, how distant she feels from her own teamates and friends right now, from the pressure of expectations to always be the one with a plan, with a smile and something positive to say to inspire everyone to Keep Moving Forward, put on her by both herself and the people around her. How Weiss is mourning her kingdom, Yang and Blake get to sort their feelings out, Jaune gets to have his breakdown, to the point his own over shadows Ruby's and her feelings are dismissed. And how the way she lashes out at them was both understandable and a long time coming, but also terribly cruel and messy. And that no one can be blamed for not seeing or reaching out to Ruby more when she refuses to let others know how much she's hurting and ask for their help. Ruby is still entitled to her own feelings. So is Jaune and WBY.
Which brings to mind a certain quote shown at the beginning of a certain someone's trailer:
"Everyone is entitled to their own sorrow, for the heart has no metrics or forms of measure. And all of it... irreplaceable"
Tumblr media
Weiss's arc involves her looking outside of herself and learning to see and understand those around her, their own sorrows and burdens they carry with them. And of course, loneliness is a big reoccurring theme in Weiss's arc. Meeting her teammates and supporting them is what leads to her understanding their struggles, hence why Weiss develops from wanting to be the leader to instead dedicating herself to being the most supportive member in team RWBY, and thrives the most when she's fighting with them, but also emotionally supports them through their own struggles.
Tumblr media
She's the one who notices something's off with Blake first in V2, and gets her to open up to the rest of her team so they can all work it out together:
Tumblr media
"So, Blake Belladonna, what is wrong!?"
She supports Yang when she's confronting Raven and dealing with her abandonment issues
"It's okay if... you're not okay."
Tumblr media
Her own sense of self and relationship to loneliness is a healthy one at present, and is something she can use to relate to others.
She understands other people’s loneliness, that Blake in V5 needed space and in time she’d come back, and Weiss would be ready to be there for her when she did. And she also understands Yang’s loneliness in the same volume and that she needed someone there to support her.
“But you’re right. I don’t know loneliness like you do. I have my own version. And, I bet Blake has her own version too.”
"When she's ready, I'll be there for her. And I know we're not as close, but... I'm here for you too."
Tumblr media
Weiss understands that no one's version of loneliness is the same, and every individual needs something different to have their feelings respected and understood. And now in V9 Weiss has to reckon and come to understand Ruby's own version of loneliness after seeing Ruby snap and how much everything has been weighing down on her, and what she needs from her as a friend and teammate.
Tumblr media
All the way back in V1, Weiss grew to accept Ruby as leader and promised to support her:
"Ruby... I think you have what it takes to be a good leader. Just know, that I am going to be the best teammate you will ever have."
And I believe she'll try to hold true to that as best she can for Ruby going forward.

so i'm rewatching rwby with my girlfriend, and it is so interesting how the show has grown with its audience (or maybe vice versa?) but like. we're at the end of volume 1 right now, and with all the volume 9 context to it, the conversations between ozpin and ruby and then subsequently ruby and jaune are just. so upsetting. like here is a child saying that she needs to put everyone before herself and that she's not allowed to make mistakes. here is a fifteen year old already putting the weight of the world on her shoulders, and she doesn't even know it yet.
but when i watched this the first time, when i was even younger than ruby was, i heard that and went "oh yeah that sounds like a good pep talk :) that sounds like good advice :)" and my gf said she thought the same. but in hindsight we were both like "hm this is fucked up actually." idk this is mostly rambles marge simpson meme i just think its neat

It’s like 5 am and clearly this has been out for like 8 years, but this is the first time I’ve seen this (aside from a couple of the storyboards that I’ve seen floating around before) and I thought this was interesting. I like the more dynamic transitions and sequences of the characters than I feel we got in the actual OP, and the beta version of This Will Be The Day was interesting in that the lyrics were once at least minutely different than the final version. Interesting stuff.

RWBY Vol. 1 Rewatch!
So I decided to start my yearly RWBY rewatch and actually write down some thoughts and reactions I had during it. Nothing crazy, but I decided to share. Here ya go. These are for the RWBY Complete Vol. 1, so I didn’t separate my thoughts by episode or anything.
Oh Torchwick how I've missed your shenanigans
Hearing Monty as Ren </3 breaks my heart every time
I wonder what Ozpin was thinking when he saw Ruby (the silver eyed girl he was eventually planning on using to replace his previous silver eyed warrior, Summer) with the Schnee heiress as her partner. He seemed to be considering it very interesting when watching them in the Emerald Forest during initiation.
Pyrrha promised to watch over Jaune when unlocking his aura and idk if that’s just part of the aura unlocking saying or something, but its still so sweet
That scene in the Emerald Forest, after they all got the relics and were making their way back with Ruby leading, Yang just stares off after Ruby with this wistful smile on her face and you can just feel how proud she is and how much Ruby reminds her of Summer. It's just such a sweet moment
When the teams each face off against the grimm you can already see the raw talent that all of RWBY has and Ruby's ability to analyze her new teams weapons and abilities to form a plan was so cool to see again. Like she just met them and she's already got a wacky idea that works. Probably partially has to do with her love for weapons
It's easy to see with JNPR how inexperienced most of them are (with the exception of Pyrrha really) but it's so fun to see how they already have a kind of connection. Once Jaune spots an opening with the deathstalker all he has to say is Pyrrha’s name and she gets the plan and same with Nora. They are more of a mess as a team than RWBY at this moment, but the beginnings of their teamwork abilities here really shine through. I also noticed that Jaune working off of pure instinct here was not completely inept at all! He was pretty calm in the face of the deathstalker, especially for someone who has never really fought. He also used his shield to block the pincer pretty well, which is pretty impressive for him at the beginning!
Blake was so playful before everything with Torchwick and the White Fang came into her life again and dragged her right back down. Just look at her joining in on the Xiao Long-Rose sisters' shenanigans. "Banzai!"
I mean I've always known about Jaune's self esteem issues. But hearing him say "I don't care what you do to me" to Cardin was really jarring. Especially after hearing him say something similar to Cinder in Vol. 5. He's always believed that his life doesn't matter as much as his teammates. It hurts to see. It'll get better and than worse my friend :/ I hope to see him realize his self-worth one day
Our intro to Sun is that he’s chaos incarnate and I love that for him. How did he even make team leader?? I would love to know XD I love this "rapscallion"
Penny is absolutely adorable I love her so much. Watching Vol. 1 Penny again after seeing her whole arc is pretty wild. You can really see how much she has grown into her own after meeting and becoming friends with Ruby. Also she has always been super perceptive and I love that about her
Blakes hair when she was younger and more optimistic (baby Blake at the faunus rally) matches her new haircut in Vol. 7 once she has regained some of her optimism <3 idk if this was intentional, but what a great call back
Trans-coded Penny immediately thinks Ruby saying that Blake “isn't who they thought she was” means that Blake is a man xD amazing
These early dynamics are so fun (only gonna talk about partners and teams cause otherwise it'd take me waaaay too long):
Whiterose: a goddamn mess from the beginning lmao but it's fun to watch Weiss and Ruby having each other's backs as the Vol goes on even with little things like combat skirts. Like that's such a little moment but it's so cute. Weiss would never have high fived Ruby or anyone probably before getting to know her and now she holds out her hand for it. Expecting it
Bumbleby: there's always been this little understanding between them I feel like. And you can see how Blake immediately admires Yang’s strength and how much Yang cares for her younger sister and Yang defends Blake to Weiss even after she runs. They act like a married couple immediately with the way they look at each other and how Blake elbows her like "be polite and give the weird girl your name, honey." I feel like they both just have so much fun together
Team RWBY: they're such a cute little family already even if they're not quite used to each other yet and have lots of lil misunderstandings. By the end of the volume it's plain to see how much they are starting to care for each other
Arkos: immediately adorable. Jaune is just so clueless and Pyrrha humors him and that dynamic is funny but what makes it great is that Jaune admits when he is wrong, apologizes for his actions, and asks for help. Jaune just expects rejection from everyone and Pyrrha gives him nothing but support its very interesting to see play out. Although it really hurts to see how much Pyrrha puts her own feelings on the back burner. And it hurts even more knowing that she never got a chance to learn from that. Miss you Pyrrha, an incredibly kind and talented person throughout her time
Renora: they're so cute. Nora is just so flustered by him and Ren is just so endeared by her. They're also so in sync especially when Nora is telling everyone about her dream and Ren is fixing details. They've clearly known each other forever. One day guys one day
Team JNPR: we don't get as much time with them as we do with Team RWBY but it's clear to see they care about each other from the beginning as they're all worried about Jaune when he's with Cardin all of a sudden and all offer each other help in their own ways. Plus I find it super cute and very family-like that it seems like they have this tradition of Ren making pancakes and expect that Nora has eaten all the syrup
Early Weiss is so prickly all the time but truly trying so hard to make that connection with her teammates by the end of the volume. She can't quite let her walls down and just be nice but she really does care, even if it comes out in weird ways. These are the only people who have shown her any kind of care since Winter left probably and she's had all her notions about faunus thrown into question by Blake. Her arc is just so fun to watch. For as much of a know-it-all as she pretends to be she really does try to question her preconceived notions and change them accordingly. Even if it does take her a bit to do it lol. It makes sense, coming from an abusive household it's hard to change how you think about things. (Plus she’s just a naturally stubborn person xD) But it's super cool to see that she is eventually pretty open to change once she's away from that abuse. Kind of like how we see Whitley almost immediately change once Jacques is no longer around!
There’s sooo much more I could say, but it would be an endless post, so I’ll just say this: every time I watch the early volumes I remember how fun they were. I love the current volumes too, but it is so fun looking back and watching all of the characters, animation, and stories grow again. I’ve been watching RWBY since the Red Trailer came out and every time I get to rewatch, it makes me incredibly happy. Thanks again Monty and the rest of CRWBY, both old and new, for making this show what it is. I’m currently prepping to take the Bar and this show has been helping me manage my stress, as it always seems to when I watch it haha.
Anyway, enough of the sappiness. I might post my rewatch thoughts for other volumes as I go through them so look out for that if you enjoyed this one I guess!

The callback to “Life’s not a fairy tale” and “that’s why we’re here, to make it better” really did hurt though.
Like, Ruby knew that being a Huntress was a serious and difficult undertaking. She knew there was risk, that not everyone who does it survives, that she might lose someone.
But knowing is different from experiencing. Ruby had so much hope that she could make things better, but she feels like she’s failed as a leader and consequently has convinced herself she’s made things worse.
That’s why she can’t comfortably claim to be a Huntress anymore. Because she thinks she’s failing at it.

What are some things that you think are universal in the RWBY fandom?
I’ll start lol. I think I can say with like 99% certainty that we ALL hated Weiss, or at least she was the least favorite, when we first watched Volume 1. I can also say with like... 80% certainty that if you hated her at first, she’s your favorite now 😗. Now you go :3

I May Fall - RWBY Volume 1 OST
There's a day when all hearts will be broken, When a shadow will cast out the light, And our eyes cry a million tears, Help won't arrive. There's a day when all courage collapses, And our friends turn and leave us behind. Creatures of darkness will triumph. The sun won't rise. Chorus: When we've lost all hope, And succumb to fear. As the skies rain blood, And the end draws near. I may fall But not like this – it won't be by your hand I may fall Not this place, not today I may fall Bring it all – it's not enough to take me down I may fall There's a place where we'll stand outnumbered, Where the wolves and the soulless will rise. In the time of our final moments, Every dream dies. There's a place where our shields will lay shattered, And the fear's all that's left in our hearts. Strength and our courage have run out. We fall apart.
Chorus: When we lose our faith, And forsake our friends, When the moon is gone, And we reach our end. There's a moment that changes a life when, We do something that no one else can, And the path that we've taken will lead us, One final stand. There's a moment we make a decision, Not to cower and crash to the ground. The moment we face our worst demons, Our courage found. Chorus: When we stand with friends, And we won't retreat, As we stare down death, Then the taste is sweet. I may fall But not like this – it won't be by your hand I may fall Not this place, not today I may fall Bring it all – it's not enough to take me down I may fall
