And that's it for the Wagamese week 3 rotation! We leave Tom to recount his date night to Roland and take a look back at everything that went down this round:
- Disappointed that his former flames seem to be living their best life with other men, Tom enlisted the help of a matchmaker, who set him up on a blind date with a dancer called Naomi! No further comment needed, y'all just saw how that one went. 😅
- Roland was also in for some lovin', arguably with a bit more success. After a full three rotations of shameless public flirting, he and Feanor are now in love with each other, with the prince dropping hints that he's willing to take things further. 👀
- As if trying to follow the romantic trend of the household, Rufus cozied up to a female wolf in winter and continued their friendship in spring! He was also a total menace in the bathtub, but that's a different story.
- There was no shortage of success on the business end of things! The Smithy reached Rank 8, and both Tom and Roland got a silver Stocking talent badge!
- Money makes the world go round! Tom earned §10,000, while Roland earned §5,000 and won an additional §110 at cards!
- Speaking of money: the guys paid their usual §1,000 in taxes. However! They're only a couple grants away from changing their status from middle to upper class! If Tom's business keeps running as successfully as it has been this whole time, The Gladwyns and Moonfeathers may not stay the only 'rich' households in the Bay for very long! 😉

I ain't much of an artist (so be nice) but I've been working on new ref sheets for months. I hope you like it and it gets my ideas across.
My fursona is a Wolf Person from my nations stories, but I tend to say red wolf (canis rufus) for simplicity's sake. It's easier than giving a cosmology lesson and recapping about 2 traditional sagas, a folktale, and a couple language jokes more times than not. A Wolf Person is not really a wolf, but they are an unparalleled hunters with stories of them in hunting bands, killing monsters, and even acting as assassins. Backed up with magic powers of their own from healing things with spit to making magic arrows from their whiskers.
Mine works as a Librarian, using those hunting skills to hunt down information. He practices southern cunning, a syncretic magic from my Appalachian home that combines the folk traditions of Tsalagi (my folks), Irish, Scottish, German, and West African peoples into something it's own. Helps with doing magical oddjobs for the magical and non-magical folks in the community.
I tried my best to layer meaning for me in there, things from home. The story he's based off of is deeply personal. There are tattoos for stories I grew up with, basket patterns, ribbons, and beading. Earrings a cousin of mine wears to powwow. I've been in this fandom a long time and having something that reads native and pushes back on some of the more racist elements of fandom is important to me. Especially considering this is basically me as a wolf (person). I hope y'all like him too.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth Review
Okay, this collection of posts will be filled with spoilers, including clips and screenshots, so if you don't wanna see things, then don't look. Some of the things I'm gonna highlight will include references to Remake to link with the overarching plot.
Now that's out the way, onto the prologue!
Yes, Rebirth has a prologue. Betcha didn't notice. Well, the opening cut scene news clip and intro with Zack is the prologue. Chapter one starts with Cloud talking about Nibelheim.
This will be a short recap because all I really wanna talk about is "Zack's world", which as far as I can tell is some kind of purgatory that was already hinted at in Remake.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In Remake, Jessie's theory that her dad's soul is stuck between the living realm and the heart of the planet was already picked up on as foreshadowing for what happens to Cloud later in Mideel.
At the end of Remake we were shown a different Stamp to hint at this different world, which so many people took to mean alternate realities. It's not an alternate reality, but the outcome of a choice.
There's only one planet, not many of itself overlapping and living out its many choices all at once. When you make a choice, the other path and its consequences disappear, absorbed back into the planet. Some choices result in the same outcome, so don't really matter, but some become the canon pathway of the planet's life. Either way they can't be changed once they're made. There's not five different Zack's running around or three Cloud's or whatever.
Tumblr media
Anyway, we can see here the different Stamp meaning this outcome is after Sephiroth used tornado to destroy several sectors.
Tumblr media
However, we know this didn't happen in reality because later on we see Rufus in his office, which is that ruined building you can see to the right of the shot.
This choice never became canon and got stuck in this between space that seems to act as a safe harbour for Cloud and Zack's souls. Since Sephiroth is in the lifestream and trying to find a way to control Cloud completely, finding and killing his true self would accomplish that, but he hasn't been able to because Zack is protecting Cloud in this annex of the lifestream. Sephiroth can even be heard during chapter 14 saying "this is where you've been hiding" and we know it can't be about Aerith or Zack because Aerith only recently appeared there and he literally states that Zack isn't the one he's looking for.
Tumblr media
Moving onto Zack's gameplay section, he goes to rescue Aerith, who's on the chopper with Red, while Tifa and Barret are on a second one.
Now, after some combat, Zack actually downs one of the choppers. We know Red is lying dead in the one Aerith was in, and I assume we're meant to think the second chopper is the one Barret and Tifa were on.
Tumblr media
But oh what's this? A third chopper. And I took a good look inside the windows while I was running around it and there's no characters inside, but this chopper doesn't get destroyed and we don't find out if Barret and Tifa were in it once the story moves onto Cloud.
I assume we're meant to think Tifa died and that means she isn't in purgatory to help wake Cloud up. I guess we'll see if this theory is right in part three.

Cheat Slayer Was Gonna Be Garbage (And Here's Why)
CONTENT WARNING: SEXUAL ASSAULT, NECROPHILIA. READER DISCRETION IS ADVISED.
The Boys of Isekai
June 9, 2021
Mangaka Homura Hawamoto, best known for the aggressively horny gambling manga Kakegurui, published a new manga in Monthly Dragon Age. The manga, titled Killing the People Reincarnated into the Other World: Cheat Slayer, promised the story of a fantasy world under the oppression of a group of supposed “heroes” reincarnated into that world and given powers and abilities designed to aid them in battling the Demon Lord who was besieging the land. However, the “heroes” instead use their powers and positions to indulge in their whims, terrorizing the towns just as the demons would. Lute, a youth from a village destroyed by one of the Reincarnates, joins up with a witch to take the Reincarnates down.
In the coming weeks, Cheat Slayer would end up canceled, releasing only the debut chapter.
The reasoning, for those who remember the story, is pretty simple. The faction of reincarnated heroes, the “Rebels Against/Insurgents Of God” were some of the most blatant copying of popular isekai characters, fashioned into grotesque mockeries of the original characters by Kawamoto. Many authors, such as Fuse (That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime) and Rifujin na Magonote (Mushoku Tensei) expressed their disgust at the magna online and even Kawamoto would later apologize.
In the States, there was a lot of backlash against the cancellation, arguing against the unfairness of Japanese copyright law, decrying the authors who spoke against Cheat Slayer as thin-skinned and lamenting the loss of what seemed like a promising manga with a great premise.
But was it?
Don’t get me wrong, a story in which the tropes of modern isekai storytelling are turned on their head, broken down and have their uglier undercurrents exposed is interesting, but that was not Kawamoto’s intent. In their own pages, Dragon Age referred to Cheat Slayer as “a revenge story coated in hate and desire.” And there certainly is no better word to describe Cheat Slayer than hate. This is a hateful little story, soaked in a bitterness toward a genre of storytelling not seen since Garth Ennis’ The Boys. Which is why I titled this section thusly.
But, enough preamble, let’s start things off with a recap of Cheat Slayer’s only chapter.
And You May Ask Yourself, “Well, How Did I Get Here?”
Our story starts off simple, establishing what looks to be the heroes and villains; The Rebels Against God (though the translation I’m reading also translates to Insurgents of God, so it depends on which scans you get for it) and the Demon Lord Troops. For the sake of brevity, I’m gonna go with the acronym RAG for the group. Our protagonist, boilerplate light novel hero Lute, is chatting with his friend Lydia about how much he loves the Reincarnates and how he’d love to serve them in some way, even if it means working as their bag boy.
Within an instant, they see their village engulfed in flames before Lute’s neck is snapped by a surprise attacker. The last thing he sees before passing out is his assailant approaching Lydia. When Lute comes to, he sees Lydia being… Well, I can't get around it.
Lydia, established childhood friend of Lute, is raped by one of the RAG. It’s censored, since this is a shonen manga, but there’s no ambiguity on that front. This is our introduction to Louis Crawford aka “God’s Mistake” and no, that isn’t an editorializing moment on my part, that is seriously the moniker given to him.
Crawford is based on Shin Wolford, the main character of Wise Man’s Grandchild, though people have claimed (most likely due to Rifujin’s objections to the book) that he’s based on Rudeus Greyrat from Mushoku Tensei. I disagree, mainly because Louis looks a lot more like Shin and given the level of creativity seen in the other RAG membership, if he really was meant to be Rudy, he would’ve been called something like Rufus Nakedmolerat.
Anyway, Louis is caught and called out by two more RAG members, “The Undead King” Don Will Dead and “Looper” Honda Yuuya. I’ll get into who these two are based on later since I know there’s a very useful panel to showcase the Rebels Against God in the coming pages. Honda tells Louis to deal with clean-up, with Louis admitting that both Lydia and Lute are already dead.
Yeah, Lydia is dead. While Louis is… god, I can’t even bring myself to come up with some sort of pithy euphemism. This is a story that starts with “we have Shin Wolford at home” fucking a corpse. The worst part is there’s nothing that tells us whether or not she was killed before or during the act, so pick your poison on that one, folks.
I think this little sequence alone is where I knew that this story was doomed to fail, regardless of concept. We are given next to no time to develop any characters before being dropped into a scene of shocking sexual violence designed to get over just how depraved and evil the villains are. It’s the sort of blunt force approach to morality you would see, ironically, in the sort of bog standard isekai this manga is supposedly deconstructing. There is little that differentiates Louis Crawford from some like Duke Uglybastard from High School Prodigies. That’s not even getting into how sexual violence is just a throwaway evil act, the gross, edgy equivalent of a heel wrestler insulting the local sports team. Or the issue of having a character that is basically a repaint of another, more recognizable character who no doubt has his own fans who would not like seeing him depicted in such a manner.
We continue onward with the introduction of the “Best Nine” the nine executives of the RAG and our fine cast of expies, who have come together for a meeting.
Tumblr media
Look at them all. Drink in the absolute lack of effort to hide just who these punks are ripping off. The only thing I can enjoy is calling the Subaru expy Honda and the choice of Flamescans to translate Kiruto into Kilt.
Flare reiterates the mission of the RAG to take down the Demon Lord, but Louis says he doesn’t care about all that and just wants money, power and women. Imerda takes time to taunt Louis, claiming he was ugly in a previous life (which, admittedly, does track with the claims this is also a dig at Rudeus) which results in him unsheathing his “magic tool” (and no, despite what the previous scene and the quotes around the words would imply, I am actually talking about Louis’ sword.)
Kilt quickly defuses the situation, Louis leaving the meeting to do “business” which I suspect is some sort of metaphor for engaging in depravity. You know, I’ve never seen Wise Man’s Grandchild myself, but I imagine Shin Wolford is nowhere near as disgusting as Kawamoto has decided to depict him as. From what I’ve come to understand, the dude doesn’t even have a harem in his story, so I don’t get why he’s our designated evil rapist.
Lute finally comes to, believing the events to be a horrible dream only to be greeted by a body on the ground. A nameless witch arrives behind Lute and tells him that she was the one who healed him and gives Lute a refresher course on what happened before offering to help Lute in killing the Reincarnates. Lute refuses, believing the task to be impossible, but the witch explains to him the nature of the Reincarnates.
She explains that one of them (it’s not explained but based on his appearance and the fact that he’s a gamer, I’m guessing it’s Kilt) was a complete shut-in loser who played games all day. She calls him and the other Reincarnates trash that should die, but instead were brought back and given cheat skills that they live off of and they aren’t real heroes. That they did nothing to earn their strength, just luck. That without their powers, they’re nothing and oh my God, Kawamoto, I get it. You hate isekai where the MC is given a special item upon going to the other world. Take a number and get in line, my dude.
Our mysterious witch once again offers to aid Lute in killing the Reincarnates, an offer he accepts off-panel, though he has his doubts as he sets off after Louis. We’re told about his cheat skills, which are basically being a Minecraft enchantment table and this picture.
So direct confrontation is out of the question. The plan is for Lute to bring Louis to the Witch, where she plans to sneak attack him with magic, probably before he can even activate his anti-magic skill. Lute heads into a fancy building where Louis is getting frisky with two nameless women. One of them tells him off for getting handsy with her, but then he rips off her top and threatens to kill everyone in the building if she and the other lady don’t blow him.
During this lovely bit of nope, he and Lute cross eyes and Louis jumps him, wondering how Lute is still alive. We get the one moment of anything resembling amusement as Louis holds Lute by the throat and lifts him into the air and I begin hoping for a chokeslam. Look, I’m a simple man, I see a one-handed chokehold, I want chokeslam.
Anyway, Louis is demanding to know how Lute is still alive instead of, I dunno, just killing him again and putting a bit more effort into getting rid of the body? He eventually does decide to kill him, but then Lute calls him a “NEET bastard” which I guess means he’s the guy the Witch was talking about earlier, but it also raises a problem. Maybe it’s just the scans I’m reading, but the Witch never uses the word NEET in front of Lute, so how the hell does he know it? That doesn’t seem like a term a lot of fantasy village types are gonna use in their lingo, ya know?
Louis stops at this, allowing Lute to reveal he knows what Louis used to be, which rattles Louis as even the other eight in the Best Nine don’t know this about him. Lute offers to tell him if Louis comes with me and that’s it. Yep, leave the first chapter on the cliffhanger and we’ll see you next month… or not.
So now that we’ve gotten a look at the one chapter, the piece designed to hook the readers in (and to be fair, it did succeed somewhat) let’s talk about why this really doesn’t work.
First, there’s the fact that for something meant to parody/deconstruct isekai, this does really nothing to make it stand out from any other isekai. Lute is the sort of generic dark-haired teen boy you see in a lot of these. Lydia, until her fridging, is your standard childhood friend. At most, you have the Witch, who is drawn in some panels to look sinister and knows a lot about these Reincarnates, but she’s the only standout.
And the villains….
Tumblr media
Let’s Talk About the Villains
For this section, I’m gonna go from each of the members of the Best Nine and break down whether or not they were good choices for this faction of evil isekai protags, using two sets of criteria. One is the book’s own description of the Best Nine as being a bunch of NEET losers who reincarnated into the world and were given a cheat weapon or skill. The second is going to examine if the character is worth deconstructing or presenting a villainous iteration of. For fun, I’m gonna alternate between left and right until we hit the creamy middle.
“Looper” Honda Yuya
And first off is our boy Honda, based on Subaru from Re:Zero. At first, he seems to be the most fitting of them all as he is a NEET, he did reincarnate into his world and he does have a special skill. But, look at Re:Zero as a whole and the choice hits a major snag. See, Re:Zero is, for lack of a better word, a deconstruction of isekai. Starting over in another world doesn’t do much better for Subaru and his cheat skill of rewinding events is more of a curse than a blessing. He suffers and dies repeatedly as a result and his own character is written to be flawed, so there’s not much Kawamoto can really do with Honda as a result. It’s a really redundant choice.
“The Undead King” Don Will Dead
Based on Ainz from Overlord, Don already fails the initial criteria since Ainz was a salaryman in his past life. He did reincarnate, sure, but most of the skills he acquired when he landed in Nazarick were basically ones he acquired from playing, so I’d hardly call them cheats. Along with that, Don’s probably more redundant than Honda. See, Overlord is a story about a guy who reincarnates into the body of his villainous player character in a VRMMO. Basically, it’s like if a Horde player got isekai’d into Azeroth. While Bone Daddy does at first try to keep from being evil, he basically becomes a straight up villain. So what the hell was Kawamoto going to do differently with Don?
“God’s Mistake” Louis Crawford
Louis got the most focus out of any of the Best Nine, but I wanna give this my due diligence. Shin was also a salaryman, did reincarnate and his cheat was… he knew physics in a past life which gave him a leg up on spellcasting. Besides once again not really getting the hat trick as far as Cheat Slayer is concerned, I honestly don’t even know if I should consider whether or not a deconstructive, villainous version of Shin is a good idea because this isn’t really Shin Wolford. I started this post thinking that people saying this was Rudeus were mistaken, but I’m walking away with the idea that Kawamoto may have really wanted to slam Rudy but completely forgot which series he was from and just kind of guessed.
“Otherworld Restaurant” Yukiko Shijo
So, this character is based on the character of Aletta from Restaurant to Another World. Now, full honest disclosure, I’ve only watched one of these isekai, so a lot of what I’m getting is from TV Tropes and other wikis on these subjects. So, imagine my bafflement in looking up Aletta and finding out that she’s not even the protagonist of Restaurant to Another World. That’s a dude called “Master” (or “Tenshu” in the original Japanese, which is a term for chefs and bartenders.)
The thing about Restaurant to Another World is that it's not a person going to another world. It’s a building. The restaurant is like some sort of TARDIS, with doors to it just showing up wherever. On Saturdays, it goes to a fantasy world, where Aletta is from. So, the choice for Aletta completely shatters the entire criteria as she’s a native of the fantasy world, not someone brought into it. I can’t even call her a NEET because she got a job as a waitress.
I remember seeing a tweet, Reddit or maybe even a forum post claiming the reason for Yukiko’s addition was because Restaurant to Another World was beating Kakegurui in the ratings. If true, then that is disgustingly petty of Kawamoto. This dude was writing manga for 7 years by this point, what is this FF dot net style sniping?
“The Fallen Goddess” Flare
So, as I mentioned before, I only watched one of the isekai being mocked here. Guess what? It’s KonoSuba! So, I didn’t need a wiki to tell me about all the ways picking Aqua for this were wrong. First, Aqua is not a reincarnate, she’s a goddess who is tasked with reincarnating people and giving them the cheat weapons to fight the Demon King. Hell, she is the cheat item in the series, being chosen by the actual protagonist Kazuma after she pushes him to pick something.
As for deconstructing her character? KonoSuba is a comedy! Aqua is notoriously the worst; selfish, narcissistic, bratty, fiscally irresponsible, lazy, stupid. All those and just so much more! And it’s not just her, everyone in KonoSuba sucks. It’s like a fantasy adventure headed up by the Always Sunny cast! You can’t really deconstruct or vilify Aqua because she is already so awful, and honestly, playing that character for horror would probably just make for a miserable reading experience.
“The Named Slime” Roro Sendiger
Based on Rimuru Tempest from That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime, we once again have another case of two out of three ain’t good enough. Rimuru was reincarnated and gained a number of powerful skills, but he was a middle manager in his previous life. Rimuru, Ainz and Shin were probably dissatisfied with their lot in life, but they were at least functioning, contributing members to society and not the useless trash that the Witch decried in her monologue to Lute.
Weirdly, this is some merit to presenting a villainous Rimuru. From what I gather, he has committed the occasional war crime in his own series. Hell, Fuse even expressed disappointment in not being consulted over Cheat Slayer since he had thought of evil Rimuru and could’ve offered ideas to Kawamoto.
“The Daughter Villainess” Imerda Pinata
And once again, an entry that leads to me scratching my head. Imerda is based on Catarina Claes from My Next Life as Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom! This one’s another comedy series and Catarina only fits the criteria of being reincarnated. She was a high-schooler when she reincarnated and has no cheats other than the fact that she knows the world of the game she reincarnated in, an otome called Fortune Lover, but the whole plot is about Catarina avoiding the bad ends that she would end up in during the game’s story progression.
She’s super ill-suited for the standard isekai fantasy world setting that this story is set in and honestly, it feels like a step backwards to have Imerda being a villain when the whole premise of the original novel was Catarina trying to avoid the dire fate of a villainess.
“The Young Demon” Anastasia Melokva
Anastasia is based on Tanya from… The Saga of Tanya the Evil
You know, I almost feel like I don’t have to explain the problem here. Like, the title of her home series calls her evil. What did Kawamoto think he was gonna do differently here? Also, she was another salaryman before reincarnating. Like, what else do you want from me? Tanya the EVIL!
“The Dual Wielding Black Knight” Kilt
And here we are! Straight in the middle, the perfect example of not landing any of the criteria!
Okay, so I said I only watched KonoSuba, that was a bit of a lie. I’ve watched a few episodes of Sword Art Online, read the first two novels and the first Progressive novel and have watched Sword Art Online: Abridged. I have a relatively good idea on Kirito and can tell you he was a terrible choice for this.
Look, I know I’m gonna be the minority opinion here, but SAO is not an isekai. Kirito is still in his home world throughout the entirety of the series. Sword Art Online and all subsequent games are not separate worlds, they’re just a bunch of lines of code in a souped-up Virtual Boy. This isn’t the Digital World of Digimon. He’s just playing a video game.
He’s also still a high schooler, so not a NEET and finally comes the cheat skill issue. Kirito’s dual-wielding is not so much a cheat as it is Reki Kawahara not understanding game design. It’s a unique skill only he can do in the game. But, he wasn’t given it so much as in some way obtained it and even he admits in a later volume that Yuuki Konno could’ve easily gotten it if she had been playing SAO instead of him.
So, probably one of the worst examples of Kawamoto’s understanding of isekai cheat characters.
But… I also can see why Kirito got selected.
Much as he isn’t from an isekai, Kirito is pretty much the template for all light novel protagonists since his introduction. No doubt a number of isekai mains pretty much took after him. In fact, one of them is Shin Wolford, which again makes me wonder why Kawamoto decided to pick Shin if he was gonna just use Kirito as a target as well.
But anyway, Kirito is still emblematic of the larger issues of isekai, forming a lot of the tropes that would oversaturate the market in his wake. Despite him not being an isekai protagonist, he’s basically the one who molded the genre to come.
However, that wasn’t why he was chosen as the leader of the Best Nine.
He was chosen for being so popular. As were a lot of the characters who were picked. But therein lies the rub, in trying to be the iconoclast and tear down the mold of the isekai power fantasy that has led the genre to grow stale, Kawamoto chose to target characters and series that broke that mold. That made fun of it, that deconstructed it, that did things differently from its brethren, that created and popularized variants of their own. He chose the characters who were popular, the easy picks despite how little they work for his plans.
Take Aqua. I have no doubt Flare only exists because Aqua became a hugely popular character among otaku. From what little I saw of Flare, she acts like a generic Genki Girl type and nothing like the character she’s based on. Aqua would probably be downing a stein of ale while Kirito tries to get her to even pay attention to a word he’s saying.
If Kawamoto really wanted to critique the problems of isekai, he’d pick characters more representative of the commonly disliked tropes of the genre. Maybe pick guys like Naofumi from Shield Hero (slavery and the constant narrative twisting to justify the choice), Yuuto from Master of Ragnarok (harem owner, three members of which are children) Youji from Gate (have a go at the author’s nationalism if he’s feeling spicy) or Keyaru from Redo of Healer (actual rapist) instead of taking out his frustrations on a demon-horned waitress and little slime guy.
Why Is There a Demon Lord?
Bringing it back to the problem of how little Cheat Slayer has of its own identity, there’s also the fact that the RAG are still fighting a Demon Lord on top of being the over-the-top villains for Lute to take down. Why even bother having this element if the selling point of the whole manga is that the Reincarnates are the bad guys? Like, if I were being generous, Kawamoto might have planned to reveal there was never a Demon Lord Troops and that it was propaganda perpetuated by the RAG in order to keep up their status as heroes. An engineered threat they can protect the people from. The problem is that in a room where the Best Nine are behind closed doors, nothing of the sort is even implied. It’s made pretty clear that they are still fighting the Demon Lord.
But again, why even bother? The Demon Lord is a trope that mainly exists to give isekai heroes a Big Bad to fight at the end of the series. It has no use in a series where the Big Bad and the Hero have been clearly established from the beginning. For all that Cheat Slayer seems to be propped up as some sort of deconstruction of isekai, it really is no different from its contemporaries. Whatever potential there is in the premise is snuffed out by the fact that its creator isn’t willing to put in any real effort into following through on it and so he just paints by the numbers and within the lines.
Conclusion
So, what was the point of all this? Well, I mostly just wanted to vent about how badly this whole manga botched a great idea, but maybe it’s also a good chance to impart some truths of writing that people will need if they ever want to try something like this.
Spite is a decent motivator, but it burns hard and fast
Take it from someone who has tried to create works out of spite for another work. You can feel a good deal of motivation from it. That feeling of “Yeah, I’m gonna make my own and it’s gonna be so much cooler and better than the original!” But that rush of endorphins will go up faster than you’d think and once it’s gone, you’d better hope to have some actual investment in the thing you’re writing or else you’re just gonna be stuck with a WIP you don’t care enough to really see through.
You have to truly know the forest before you burn it down
Hating something is easy. You don’t need to understand something deeply to hate it. But if you intend to tear something down, to expose its flaws, to build something new from its wreckage, you need to actually understand it. To be able to articulate what it is that is so wrong with it rather than just it being the popular thing. The easy target. Anyone can take a metaphorical hammer to a bad piece of fiction. To take that bad fiction apart and then reassemble the pieces takes a knowledge of what really goes into making it. So, if you really want to make something like Cheat Slayer (and really, I wouldn’t blame anyone for trying, it’s a good idea) then it helps to know your enemy.
Anyway, I think I’d better stop rambling and let you all go along. Thanks for reading if you actually bothered to read. Hope you enjoyed it.

What's Going On With Those Memory Gaps? | Gen V Theories
If you're a fan of Gen V, you probably experienced quite the shock during the latest episode. You're definitely not the only one to have thought your screen was broken or rewound a couple times just to make sure. That cliffhanger left us all with one burning question: what's going on with those memory gaps?
A brief recap to set the scene: Sam is at Dr Cardosa's ready to kill him thanks to our beloved Television's Jason Ritter. The gang appear to try and get Sam safe, saving Dr Cardosa and his family in the process. Cue pretty much everyone getting their ass kicked except for Emma, who is... eating spaghetti? The fight moves outside (notably sans Cate) and it looks as though Sam is ready for a round 2 until Emma emerges from inside. Remember how she purges to shrink? Well, seems it works the other way around too, since she's now huge. It takes nothing for her to pluck Sam up and hold him down, and Marie promises that they'll pr-
We can only assume she was going to say 'protect him', since the screen cuts to black before she finishes her phrase. Fade in, and Marie's now waking up in bed. Wait a little longer and Jordan rolls over, slinging an arm over Marie in her sleep.
As if that wasn't perplexing enough, the teaser for the next episode suggests that these memory gaps might be more widespread than we initially thought. Theories have been flying left and right since last week, and we're diving in headfirst. So, buckle up and get ready to dive into the depths of speculation as we attempt to make sense of what's going on with this plotline!
Theory 1: Rufus
We met Rufus in Episode 4 in what was arguably one of the most iconic scenes so far: tag team cocksplosion. Rufus is a psychic and, given we saw Marie have a similar blackout when he tried to assault, it's not so far-fetched to say he could be causing them. But why? And how has he recovered so quickly from having his dick literally explode?
Theory 2: Cate
So far we've only seen Cate be able to influence people when she's in physical contact with them, but that hasn't stopped fans from thinking she's involved. Think about it: she was there when the group initially arrived at Dr Cardosa's, but disappeared during the action. It could be innocent – her powers aren't great on offense – but her absence combined with her studying the 'hero management' track has led to a lot more distrust.
Theory 3: Sam
A lot of fans have suggested that Sam is causing these blackouts, although he is not officially confirmed to have any psychic powers so far. We've seen him communicate telepathically with Luke, yet there's still several questions to be answered about that. It's a plausible theory, given he was effectively cornered and already experiencing hallucinations, but at the same time, it's doubtful he'd be able to control them if this were the case.
Theory 4: Cate (again)
Yes, we know, we've already spoken about Cate knocking everyone out for some maleficent reason, but there's several theories surrounding her. This one proposes that Dr Cardosa managed to hit a panic button, staff from the Woods managed to subdue our team and they were briefly captured. Cate's involvement comes from what we've seen of her with Luke ('make me feel better') – whether the gang escaped or were eventually set free, Cate wiped their memories of whatever suffering they experienced underground.
Whatever you believe, it's not long to go until we find out the truth! Episode 5 of Gen V streams Thurs Oct 12 at 5pm PT/8pm ET or Fri Oct 13 1am BST.

Midnight Plays Azure Gleam: Chapter 11
Betcha thought I'd forgotten about this, huh? Just more of real life getting in the way, and me spending most of my gaming time with Dragalia Lost in its waning days of existence (sob). I forgot to mention previously that I am chronically slow with playing through games in general.
This was a very long chapter, so there's a long post under the cut.
The narration says that after dealing with the Western Church, the Kingdom has now set up base in Gerth territory.
Rodrigue's back! He thinks things are finally settled in the western territories, and that the new heads of Houses Gideon, Elidure and Mateus should ensure there's no more internal rebellion.
Ashe is surprised that the rebel houses got to keep their territory. Dedue implies it may be temporary? (His line feels a bit out of place.) Rodrigue says dissenters always arise when the head of a territory is replaced, both among nobles and commoners. Felix is surprised things have gone relatively smoothly, to which Rodrigue reminds him that he has lots of experience with kingdom politics.
(Rodrigue's dad energy is so good. Not just towards Felix and Dimitri but to the Lions as a whole.)
Turning to the war, Dimitri recaps a report from Gustave that Claude is waiting for the ideal time to advance in the east, since Claude doesn't want to face Count Bergliez head on. So the Alliance is going to feign a deadlock and whittle away at the Imperial forces. Which is basically what was shown at the end of the last chapter.
Shez asks if they should wait to advance on Hevring territory until the Alliance can come help. Dimitri says no, since if the Kingdom proves a great enough threat, it will draw more of the Imperial army westward, which will give Claude an opportunity.
Felix wonders if Claude can be trusted. Annette speculates he might be trying to wear the Kingdom down so the Alliance can attack it later. (Again with this stuff. I know Claude's the "schemer" by reputation, but what exactly has he done in this story that makes him so untrustworthy?)
Ingrid at least thinks Claude is on the level, as long as they have the same enemy. ....And then in the next breath says that he's "tricky to pin down." [Sigh] Mercedes doesn't think it hurts to be too cautious. That's not a bad mindset, but this is still coming across as contrived, IMO.
Dimitri offers reassurance, saying that if the Alliance did try anything, Gustave and the Knights of Seiros should be enough to stop it. So we're to proceed with Claude's plan. Dimitri wants to end the war as soon as possible, for the sake of everyone caught in the middle.
Rodrigue asks if Dimitri can "topple" Edelgard. (I'm assuming this is a euphemism for kill.) And he means this from an emotional standpoint, rather than a strategic one. Shez says anyone would hesitate to cut down their own family.
Dimitri asks Rodrigue if he really thinks he's incapable, considering he executed Rufus. He still has questions for Edelgard about Duscur, and then says he's not so different from her in starting wars of their own volition.
(I'm sorry, what? HOW are their actions the same? Dimitri is trying to end the chaos that Edelgard created when she declared war on the Church of Seiros. THIS IS NOT THE SAME THING!)
(I am so effing done with this "both sides" bullcrap. Over and over again the writers keep trying to force this false equivalency between the Empire's actions and the Kingdom's reactions, and it's wrong. Wrong, wrong, wrong. There is a HUGE difference between starting a war of aggression and defending your sovereign nation and your allies from that aggressor. IT. IS. NOT. THE. SAME.)
Dimitri says that if Edelgard refuses to yield, then he will take her life. (Shades of Azure Moon. Will we get another parlay between Dimitri and Edelgard in this timeline?) Rodrigue is pleased to hear it, and then hands over a letter he found during his inquiry with Viscount Elidure.
...The letter is from Patricia. Oh no.
Rodrigue has already read the letter, and says it has no new information, but he thinks Dimitri will probably find it disturbing. Dimitri says he'll read it later.
...Which is apparently right now for us, because the scene immediately changes to Shez and Dimitri discussing the letter. It was a missive to Viscount Elidure requesting cooperation in the conspiracy. Patricia/Anselma expressed sympathy for the Viscount's objections to Lambert's reforms, and said the Viscount would have a lot to gain from Lambert's death. Dimitri had the letter checked for any signs of forgery, but it's apparently authentic.
So yeah, Patricia did indeed participate in the Tragedy of Duscur. Ouch.
Dimitri says that every memory he has of his stepmother, she was "looking past" him, like the person she really cared for was somewhere else. But he still finds it hard to come to terms with her crimes, even in the face of solid evidence. He says he counted Patricia among the people he wished to avenge, but now she lies "squarely in the path of his fury."
(Note that Dimitri is sad/regretful as he's talking about all this, not angry. What a raw deal he got; the only mother he ever knew, whom he loved as a mother, cared so little for him that she was willing to sacrifice him in a regicide plot so she could go back to the Empire.)
(Press X to hug!)
Shez unhelpfully calls the whole thing "heavy stuff" and then Dimitri notes that something seems to be bothering Shez and asks what it is. (How typical of Dimitri to be worried about his friend while he's grappling with this awful bombshell. Some things never change!)
Shez brings up Myson and how he was familiar with Shez's powers. Shez isn't sure they trust themselves anymore, and wants to know the truth of who they are.
Dimitri says he trusts Shez. Shez asks what would happen if they suddenly transformed and attacked him (foreshadowing?), and Dimitri says he would stop them, and trails off before actually saying he'd kill Shez if he had to.
Shez says death is a good motivator to get their powers under control. Arval is upset that Shez sounds like they're OK with Dimitri killing them if the need arose. Hm....
Camp (Mideastern Gerth Territory)
Dorothea is worried about "Edie" and outright wonders if she's dead.
An NPC mercenary says a bunch of people have been defecting from the Empire lately. Said mercenary is actually one of those defectors; she chose to fight for the Empire at the start of the war because they seemed stronger, but now her money's on the Kingdom.
Now Marianne is worried about Edelgard. What earthly reason does Marianne have to be worried about Edelgard? They weren't even classmates during the whole month the Officer's Academy was open. What the hell?
Annette feels guilty that we're the ones "invading" now. Yes, that's true from a technical standpoint, but.... (That sound you hear in the background is my teeth grinding together.)
An NPC merchant talks about being rescued by the Knights of Seiros. He says he used to think the Central Church was "garbage" but now thinks he was mistaken.
Balthus and Yuri are bickering like a married couple, lol.
An NPC Kingdom Soldier says Jeralt's group works for Randolph. That guy again, huh?
Petra doesn't think Brigid will be having any relations with the Empire after the war. (Good for her.)
Flayn wants to save the people, even if it means fighting to do so.
An NPC Empire soldier expresses concern for Randolph. It's kind of insulting that this game's insisting Randolph's a good guy I should care about when his most memorable appearance in 3H was when Dimitri directly challenged his hypocrisy. Randolph has never been anything more than a Red Shirt.
Rodrigue wonders if he should've given Patricia's letter to Dimitri. (I think he did the right thing for the record, painful as it is.)
Paralogue: Raiders From the North
Woo! A paralogue featuring Dimitri, Sylvain and Rodrigue!
Shez complains about the cold, and says there's no snow (again). Sylvain says it's often coldest where there isn't snow. (Right, I'm sure the beaches of Hawaii are much colder than the top of Mt. Everest. /s)
(For the record, I live in a place that has long, cold winters and I have no idea what Sylvain's line is supposed to mean. It's true that if the air gets cold enough, snow cannot fall, but the coldest section of my state is the one that typically gets the most snow every winter overall, not the least.)
(In other words, give me my goddamn snow map. Or at least stop treating me like an idiot incapable of seeing through your contrived excuses for the lack of one.)
So this is all about invaders from Sreng, as the title implies. Shez asks if Faerghus and Sreng are mortal enemies, and Sylvain says it's not quite that but that there's always been fighting between the two. When Faerghus won the northern campaign years ago, the Sreng leader offered his youngest son as a POW, and that same son is now leading the current raid.
Rodrigue explains that Margrave Gautier's first wife was lost during the Sreng offensive (this is Miklan's mother), but in an effort to foster better relations, Matthias taught the POW the Faerghus language and customs and treated him well. But the prisoner escaped at the first opportunity.
Dimitri notes that our opponent would know more about Faerghus strategies than a typical Sreng commander would.
Matthias enters, and explains that we're heading for a place called the Ruska Mountains. Rodrigue knows the stronghold and notes that it's like their re-enacting the northern campaign. Matthias apologies for dragging Dimitri into this matter, but Dimitri naturally doesn't mind.
Sylvain cracks a joke about slacking off and gets an (implied) death glare from his dad and immediately walks it back, lol.
Rodrigue self-deprecates that he's just a common military man now, and Matthias calls him out on his false modesty. (These two are great together. You can see where Sylvain and Felix get it from.)
Matthias exhorts everyone to make "our king" proud. But I get the impression he's referring to Lambert, not Dimitri.
Pretty big map, but it doesn't look too complicated. The goal is simply to drive back the Sreng army. Matthias joins us as a green unit, and naturally we have to keep him alive.
Dimitri remarks that his father once stood on this battlefield. Sylvain isn't sure how he feels about repeating the same fight.
Rodrigue says he feels like he's fighting beside Matthias and Lambert again. Sylvain is flattered, but doesn't think he can compared to his dad. Dimitri says he's more than worthy of the comparison.
After defeating the Sreng generals, reinforcements come in, and we're given three strongholds to seize in a limited time.
Sylvain says that the enemy's tactics remind him of his father's chess strategies.
At Sylvain's prompt, Rodrigue talks a bit about Matthias' first wife. She was a classmate of theirs at the Officer's Academy, the star pupil of the Black Eagles. Dimitri says Matthias got his "Wall of Ice" title after her death. Rodrigue affirms this, and says that Matthias was lively and cheerful before that. (So he was more like Sylvain, I guess.)
There, seized the strongholds in time....and a buttload of reinforcements come out. The boss music kicks in as the Sreng leader taunts us. Defeating this round of reinforcements lures him out to play. He makes a beeline for Matthias, but since he hangs out at the center of the map, that's not a problem.
The commander has a little friendly-ish banter with Sylvain after he's defeated. Interesting.
A Rank, once again because of a too-low killcount (1356/1600). Paralogue battles in particular seem to have excessively demanding kill requirements. Dimitri won the MVP, naturally.
After the battle, Matthias says he's never seen this kind of ferocity from Sreng forces before, but says he's still surprised the commander tried to "batter" his way into Faerghus like that.
Shez thinks maybe Sreng saw the war as an opportunity for them. Dimitri wonders if someone from Adrestia incited them to attack, and Rodrigue mentions it could've been Cornelia's allies. (He likens them to a "bad rash," lol)
Matthias says the fault is still his for educating the Sreng commander in the first place. Sylvain says he shouldn't blame himself, and Dimitri points out that because the commander spoke their language, Sylvain was able to speak with him briefly.
Dimitri says he was raised to think of the Sreng people as demons, so even exchanging a few sentences with them feels like a "miracle." Sylvain agrees, as they can't achieve peace without understanding each other.
Matthias gets angry, since he can't see a way to peace with Sreng. Sylvain tells him he'll find a way, even if it takes his whole life. Matthias calls him naive and storms off. Rodrigue runs after him.
Dimitri compliments the earnestness of Sylvain's words. Sylvain reiterates that he's determined to make peace between Faerghus and Sreng somehow. Dimitri agrees that there's no need to use military might if another way is possible, and say he appreciates the way Sylvain thinks. Sylvain says he's impressed with how much Dimitri hates warfare considering he's good at it. (This whole exchange between them is great stuff; it's like the A support they never got in 3H. <3)
Shez asks if the Margrave will be OK. Sylvain says if Matthias really thought he was a naive idiot, he wouldn't have said anything at all.
Cut to Rodrigue and Matthias. They reminisce a bit about their time as students, and Matthias says Lambert wanted to forge peace between Faerghus, Duscur and Sreng. (Knowing that makes what happened to him even more tragic. Ouch.) Matthias remembers calling Lambert naive back then, but now wonders if he's actually the naive one, because he can't see things now as Lambert once did. He wonders if maybe peace with Sreng is possible after all.
Rodrigue says he hasn't changed at all, and tells him that if he regrets what he said to Sylvain, he should apologize. Matthias agrees.
...But we don't get to see that scene, though we get the Lance of Ruin (woo!) which strikes me as a very "Faerghus Dad" way of apologizing.
Really liked this paralogue. The battle was fun, there's some interesting worldbuilding bits and some great character interactions. Good stuff all around!
Battle
So we're taking on the forces of four Imperial houses at once, including Essar and Ochs, who should sound familiar. Dimitri reminds the group that we're the invaders this time. This particular short speech is fine on its own, but since it sits on top of the steaming pile of both-siderisms the game keeps throwing out, I can't help but be a little annoyed by it. Again.
Annette says this battle is the key to stopping the war. Ashe says he believes in this path, and Felix, Dedue and Sylvain chime in with similar sentiments, along with their support for Dimitri. Rodrigue says it's time to show the Empire what happens when they cross the people of Faerghus.
Another very big map, with an intimidating kill count of 2000. (Ugh). Our final Wolf, Constance, is here to recruit, and so is everyone's favorite sleepyhead, Linhardt. Opting to recruit them both requires nearly all of the Strategy Points!
Starting off, it's the usual "defeat the vanguard and seize a few marked strongholds" thing. Mercedes thinks it seems too easy, which is probably a hint that there will be something different on this map soon enough.
Seizing the next designated area now makes Rodrigue think things are going too smoothly.
Ah, now we get to pursue Monica. We also have to seize many more strongholds, some of which are annoyingly behind locked gates. There's a Gatekeeper we have to take out first.
....And of course, it's some kind of trap. Defeating the Gatekeeper spawns Hanneman, who proceeds to start dropping Bolting spells. Linhardt also appears (as a Holy Knight!) with a bunch of reinforcements.
Oh and there's Constance too, jeez. As well as some of the faceless Imperial nobles who sound very eager to bury the Faerghus army.
There, recruited Constance and Linhardt. Linhardt sounds super whiny after being defeated, lol.
The faceless nobles just retreat after being defeated. I'm a little disappointed. If the game wants me to feel bad for invading, it's gotta let me draw some blood, you know?
Oh, we get to actually kill Baron Ochs. Not that it matters since he's not really a character. Monica's reaction to his death is pretty underwhelming too, but she does finally come out to fight.
And Manuela's here now too. Haven't seen her yet at all, I don't think.
Oh come on! Even Monica just retreats. I wonder if she'll be like Ferdinand and Hubert and conveniently die/disappear offscreen. Does this game want me to feel bad about fighting the Empire or not?
So there's a gimmick with Manuela and Hanneman, in that she'll keep healing him when you bring his HP close to zero. There's probably a limit to how many times she does this? I don't know, but Rodrigue points you to defeat her first, so that's what I did. And yup, they both just retreat upon defeat. [Eyeroll] Dimitri speculates we might see them again though, so...maybe that's foreshadowing.
The final boss is Duke Gerth. Why this guy and not one of the characters we actually know? For a "climatic" clash, this is seriously underwhelming in terms of drama.
...Holy crap even Duke Gerth retreats. [Facepalm]
I got the S Rank! I just barely eked out enough kills, 2060. Dimitri won the MVP, yet again.
Post Battle
Rodrigue says the Imperial nobles will battle to the end to fight for their homes (which is why they run away after being defeated, apparently /s), just as the Kingdom would. This is true, and exactly what I would expect. Sylvain says it's exhausting just thinking about it, and Ingrid reminds him that they're doing this to bring peace to Fodlan.
Dimitri says that if the Empire and Kingdom can't coexist, then there's no choice but to fight. Sylvain agrees, since it's obvious what'll happen to Faerghus if Adrestia is left to do what it wants.
Rodrigue is impressed with everyone's resolve, and says the future of Faerghus is bright. (That great dad energy again!) He says that when the war's over, the king's the one who will get labeled as the invader. (That is usually how things work in history.) Felix gets mad and tells him not to put everything on Dimitri. Rodrigue tells him that his duty as the Shield is to support the king. Felix scoffs and says that's obvious.
Cut to Shez and Rodrigue alone. He's up late doing strategy work, so as to make things easier for Dimitri. They both comment on Dimitri's workaholic tendencies, and Rodrigue says Lambert was like that too.
Interesting: Lambert also became king at a young age. Shez asks if Dimitri is that much like his father, and Rodrigue says they'd be hard to tell apart if they were in the same room together now. (D'awww) He does add that Lambert apparently had a shorter temper, but that they're overall birds of a feather, unlike himself and Felix.
Shez says that Rodrigue and Felix actually are pretty similar (they actually are, once you get past Felix's tsundere-ness), with how they both take initiative on important matters. Rodrigue is flattered, and tells Shez to say that to Felix as well, lol.
He says Felix is a lot like him, but in ways he'd hoped they wouldn't be. Shez asks what he means, and Rodrigue says both he and Felix need some greater purpose in life. Rodrigue devoted himself fully to supporting and serving Lambert, and when he died, he lost his reason for living, and had to search for a new one. In the end, he renewed his devotion to Lambert by seeing through a promise he made. Shez asks what that promise was, and Rodrigue says that he was to set Dimitri back on the proper course if he ever strayed from it.
(The feels! If you've forgotten, this is a direct callback to Azure Moon. Rodrigue's promise was expressed/recalled when he died protecting Dimitri after Gronder.)
(...Wait a minute...)
Rodrigue says he won't be here forever, and he's glad Dimitri has friends like Shez. Shez says they feels like Dimitri's the one helping them, not the other way around.
Oh man. Rodrigue says it's not enough to simply stand by Dimitri's side and support him; he "needs someone to grab his hand and pull him in the right direction."
In other words....
Tumblr media
[Squeeing noises]
Shez asks if Rodrigue doesn't think he can do that, even with Gustave's help. Rodrigue says he and Gustave are just Dimitri's retainers, and so can't see Fodlan through his eyes. But Shez stands on equal footing with him as his friend.
(Ugh, that line immediately jerked me out of my happy zone. I'm outright starving for any kind of Dimileth crumbs at this point.)
They talk a bit about Shez's background, and then Arval comments that Rodrigue is a true man of character and a wonderful person. (Agreed!!) Then Rodrigue asks for Shez's thoughts on how to stage an ambush, and we fade to black.
I enjoyed this scene with Rodrigue immensely, but it's giving off the same vibe as his late-night conversation with Byleth before Gronder, and we all know what happened there. Should I be worried?
This chapter was very much a mixed bag. The paralogue was great, there were some good side battles, and there's the emotional moment with Dimitri about his stepmother and this moving conversation with Rodrigue. The main battle was fun to play but abysmal in terms of executing the drama the narrative was trying to build, and the attempts to "both sides" this conflict continue to be infuriating, if not outright insulting to my intelligence. [Shrug]

Advent Children vs ACC
Movie Differences that I remembered to write down
Here are some differences I noticed, as I watched Advent Children  (2005), compared to the release of Advent Children Complete (2009); I also watched both in the Japanese dub
Some minor differences such as facial wounds and different spellings appear throughout the movie. Some include Healin Lodge [AC] and Healen Lodge [ACC] as well as the road signs in English (Midgul in AC vs Midgar in ACC)
AC times are based on the Youtube version
Contains spoilers below
Rufus and Kadaj engage in a discussion while overlooking Edge. A flashback sequence shows that this conversation takes place two weeks after the sequence taken from the Northern Crater. The mountains of the Northern Crater also has brighter lighting, better graphics with hail pelting the foreground. (In the original, a cloud of mist or smoke obscures the mountain.) Kadaj ends the shot with a single line "You are going to give her back eventually" as the helicopter flies off [1:00 ACC]
As Marlene monologues a recap of the events in FF7, Caith Sith rides atop of a stuffed mog next to Barret, Tifa, and Red XIII. They are both absent in the original [4:00 AC & 6:00 ACC]
After Marlene's narration concludes, the shot of the new town built outside the ruins of Migar are different. Two people paying tribute to a memorial statue of Meteorfall is shown, for example. The extended version particularly lingers on victims of Geostigma, including the girl with twin-tails  [7:00 ACC]
A commission report announcement plays over a radio as Tifa scrubs tableware in the bar, discussing the concentration of Lifestream on the surface and mako in facilities, with relation to Geostigma [9:00 ACC]
As Tifa enters into Cloud's room, the hallway outside is notably different [9:00 ACC] A closeup shot of Cloud's desk is seen, cluttered with books, including a medical science book. Cloud’s desk is originally littered with papers and the scene focuses on a framed photograph of Cloud, Tifa, Marlene, and Denzel together. [7:00 AC &10:00 ACC]
After his initial run-in with Kadaj and his gang, the scene transitions to Denzel lying in bed, staring at a photograph of him holding hands with Marlene, and Cloud behind them on Fenrir in the background [14:00 ACC]
At Healen Lodge, after Cloud and Reno clash their weapons together, Cloud initially locks the door after Reno charges at him. In the extended version, Cloud engages the lock after Reno momentarily peers back inside and greets him [13:00 AC & 16:00 ACC]
Rufus discusses the peculiarity of Geostigma with Cloud in depth and the Turks' exploration into the Northern Crater. A flashback of grainy footage is shown of Elena and Tseng encountering Sephiroth's remnants [17:00 ACC]
When Cloud asks what the situation has to do with him while speaking to Rufus, Reno replies, "You're our buddy aren't you?" Cloud violently kicks the door in response. This was absent from the extended version [15:00 AC]
When Cloud asks about who "Mother" is, Rufus deflects, bringing up the children he and Tifa are looking after [16:00 AC] As Cloud turns around and unlocks the door, he asks Rufus if he is hiding anything from him. Rufus remarks on Cloud's interest in learning more about Geostigma for the sake of the two children [20:00 ACC]
Rude and Reno worry about the disappearance of their fellow Turks (Elena and Tseng) and ruminate on their current situation, considering the point of atonement. A black, mysterious haze appears from underneath the door as Kadaj speaks "found you." The scene transitions to Denzel answering the phone while waiting at Seventh Heaven by himself. A flashback sequence of Denzel wandering the ruins of Midgar is shown, as well as his first meeting with Cloud. After it ends, Denzel hears the roar of a motorcycle in the distance outside and excitedly runs out, but sees a member of Kadaj's gang instead. [23:00 ACC]
Denzel sits outside where the twin-tailed girl and her brother are briefly seen, as other city-dwellers ignore them aside from Denzel [31:00 ACC]
Cloud’s flashback of Zack is extended. Cloud witnesses his last moments and inherits the Buster Sword. Sephiroth ends the flashback by talking to him [21:00 AC & 33:00 ACC]
Denzel sits outside of Seventh Heaven where the twin-tailed girl with a moogle plush invites him to come along with other children with Geostigma [38:00 ACC]
After Reno and Rude depart from the room (after rescuing Cloud and Tifa from the church), Cloud stares at a picture of Denzel. He reminisces through the continuation of Denzel’s flashback when Cloud first met/picked up Denzel. Additionally, the children inflicted with Geostigma are seen transported by the remnants to their hideout in the Forbidden City [42:00 ACC]
Music changed when Cloud and Tifa are lying together side-by-side in Aerith’s church to a sound with a different type of ambience. The original "Water" was replaced with the soundtrack "Anxious Heart." [27:00 AC & 40:00 ACC]
Cloud escorts Marlene home, dropping her off at Seventh Heaven. They briefly chatter where Marlene notes that Cloud was quietly seeking a cure for Denzel, to his astonishment [1:01:00 ACC]
As Kadaj and Rufus talk to each other on top of a building, new footage is displayed whereas the original replayed old montages while they spoke [46:00 AC & 1:03:00 ACC]
After the rest of their teammates arrives to help out, Tifa and Denzel jog back to Seventh Heaven; Denzel is frozen as he witnesses Geostigma victims lying helplessly on the ground, and has flashbacks to when he watched the Sector 7 bombing on the news. Tifa cups his hand before resuming their jog before she engages with some enemies. However, she is knocked down to the ground. It adds a brief parallel of Zack and Aerith juxtaposed with Denzel and Tifa in danger; the former moments before their deaths and the latter currently in danger. Cloud re-appears, arriving in time to save the latter. He apologizes to Tifa for being late [1:13:00 ACC]
Denzel runs back home on his own when a monster attacks. He bursts a fire hydrant to deter it [1:15:00 ACC]
All of the Turks (Reno, Rude, Tseng, Elena) and Rufus meet up (after Kadaj, his gang, and Cloud head off) sharing a look together [1:23:00 ACC] Originally, Rude and Reno attempt to climb a construction tarp from the ground to reach the rest of their companions [1:03:00 AC]
During the highway chase, Rude and Reno join via a helicopter, destroying part of the highway as they engage with two of the remnants [1:24:00 ACC]
Sephiroth kicks Cloud into some rubble; Cloud unleashes his omnislash but is unsuccesful. Mirroring the original game, Sephiroth impales Cloud on his sword in the air, before flicking him away, sprouting a single dark wing in the process. Sephiroth then repeatedly stabs at Cloud viciously, before Cloud lands in a bloodsplatter. There is then a scene where Cloud and Zack speak as Sephiroth advances towards him. When he successfully unleashes his omnislash this time around, it glows purple and blue (rather than gold) and includes a momentary shot of a wolf (Fenrir). The end sequence of is also slightly longer [1:41:00 ACC] *In the original version, Sephiroth stabs Cloud into his right side, but Cloud pulls out the sword. Sephiroth does not sprout a wing, though he does retain a dark wing at the end before he disappears [1:19:00 AC]
In the shot with Marlene and Denzel (after the two remaining remnants fire at Cloud) the sky appears brighter with rain pelting in the background less noisely and noticeably before it appears to stop. A phone call sounds at Seventh Heaven in Cloud's room where the kids go to answer it. They run outside alongside a crowd of other children and people before joining hands with the twin-tailed girl. The crowd enters the ruins of Midgar and convene outside Aerith's church [1:25:00 AC & 1:49:00 ACC]
The second ending credits song when Cloud is driving Fenrir is changed from Kyosuke Himuro's "Calling" to Kyosuke Himuro and Gerard Way performing "Safe and Sound" [1:36:00 AC & 2:00:00 ACC]
During the credits, a brief glimpse of Aerith is seen in AC, but she is not there in the credits of ACC. She is replaced by a montage of scenes from the movie instead [1:39:00 AC]
Outside the ruins of Midgar where Zack’s Buster Sword originally marked his final stand, Red XIII narrates to one of his cubs about the spot being "where the 'hero' began his journey." The same flowers that decorate Cloud’s office also decorate the spot [2:05:00 ACC]
The final shot shows the Buster Sword (cleaned of its rust) at its new resting place in Aerith’s church [2:06:00 ACC]
Summary
ACC features new rendering of certain scenes (when Rufus talks with Cloud at Healen Lodge) and new footage (replacing the montage that plays with Rufus and Kadaj talking)
More focus on Geostigma and Cloud trying to find a cure for Denzel
Includes Cloud with more scenes where he directly interacts with the kids
More scenes and emphasis on the twin-tailed girl with a moogle plush
More blood splatter and wounds as characters engage in fights

supernatural s6e17 my heart will go on (w. eric charmelo, nicole snyder)
the sheer number of plotlines they're bringing up in the recap! jo and ellen, angel drama, bobby and rufus, jim beaver's questionable acting as evil ear worm. are we gonna wallow in everyone we've gotten killed's deaths
this is very final destination. like, the wood holding up the very heavy garage door for no reason. obviously it's gonna kill him somehow.
good sibling dumbassery there with the rock paper scissors but uh. sam with paper and being surprised at dean's scissors??? what is going on
Tumblr media
well, obviously something very hinky, mustang and all. but not only is ellen here but she's got like. obvious makeup and a blowout. but she's been huntin with jo. again, looks lovely, but too much for the character.
(every episode that doesn't mention sam's wall since hell spilled over makes my eye twitch)
psst the mustang is totally a sexier car than the impala which looks great from the front but is just... so... long. sexy quotient decreases, i don't make the rules
i like bobby and ellen together even if it doesn't make a ton of sense (he's got nearly 20 years on her), she's not gonna put up with him being an ass
Tumblr media
DEAN Are you okay?
ELLEN Aw, honey, you're sweet. You know me. I just worry about you boys.
DEAN Yeah, well.
🥲
they've got a nicer-than-usual hotel/motel/holiday inn too
BALTHAZAR Oh, uh, sorry, uh. You have me confused with the other angel – you know, the one in the dirty trenchcoat who's in love with you. I... don't care. Goodbye, boys.
first the profound bond, now balthazar* is outing him. i don't think cas is ever around enough to really have them show this, but i feel like the show is enthusiastic about telling us how cas feels about dean lol
Tumblr media
funny since i had just taken a screenshot of bobby's regular sign a few episodes back, not self service with ellen apparently
kinda miserable to see bobby and the boys have more of a support system to have to wipe it all away to fix the timeline.
DEAN What'd she look like?
SAM Kind of like a librarian.
DEAN Your kind of librarian or my kind of librarian?
SAM Well, she was wearing clothes, if that's what you mean.
so dumb but i laughed nonetheless. lot of sibling banter this episode. they seem a little happier in this universe 🥴
Tumblr media
SAM What did we do?
CASTIEL Nothing of import – just the tiny matter of averting the Apocalypse and rendering her obsolete. I think maybe she's a little irritated about that. And then you go and dangle yourselves in front of her...
i have read only a little destiel and when he pops up in my regular reading, but again, he's funny! unexpected! especially with how he is written in some stuff (reminds me of how [a lot of] people write adam in HEU)
Tumblr media
CASTIEL Balthazar has a weapon that will work against her.
DEAN Of course he does. Yeah. Boy, that guy's just got it covered, doesn't he? You need new friends, Cas.
CASTIEL I'm trying to save the ones I have, Dean.
dean doesn't know what to do with that, apparently
ATROPOS Bull crap. This isn't about some stupid movie. He's under your orders. You sent him back to save that ship.
CASTIEL No, I didn't. Why would I?
ATROPOS Oh, maybe because you're in the middle of a war and you're desperate? Come on. This is about the souls.
CASTIEL You don't know what you're talking about.
ATROPOS That angel went and created 50,000 new souls for your war machine.
CASTIEL You're confused.
ATROPOS No. You can't just mint money, Castiel. It's wrong...It's dangerous... And I won't let you.
i am also confused. that sounds lowkey evil and i don't understand how more souls would help. i thought the fighting was just angel v angel?
(wiki)
Dean drives a Mustang which has the original plates the Impala had -- "KAZ 2Y5" -- until 2.20 What Is and What Should Never Be. A '65 Mustang was Kripke's original choice for Dean's car: "When I was originally writing the show I wanted to give the guys an American muscle car. My first choice was a '65 Mustang. My neighbor said it has to be a '67 Impala, because you can put a body in the trunk. He says, 'You want a car that, when people stop next to it at the lights, they lock their doors.'"
funny. but definitely roomier, it is sensible. not sure about intimidating though but hey
In the previous episodes involving time travel – 4.03 In the Beginning and 5.13 The Song Remains the Same – the travel was a part of a contiguous series of events. That is, the going back in time was something that had always happened, and did not change events. In this episode, Balthazar says that there are "No rules" anymore, hence his ability to alter events by taking action in the past.
there's some hand waving if i've ever seen it
Jensen once did an ad for Titanic-related merchandise.
oh jackles. aren't you lucky to have such a fanbase that they dig that up and put it somewhere everyone can see
okay and following up on the rock paper scissors, what doES IT MEAN if in this timeline dean doesn't always lose
ps still mad about ellen getting killed off to begin with
(moving this to the end because truly) waxing philosophical to myself about how they often include scenes from really heavy, serious moments in the recap and then the episode is cracky but they briefly have a conversation about the Serious Thing. it's so weird. it's like the exact opposite of mad men next episode promos (which told you absolutely nothing of content). anyway, whenever there's a lot of serious stuff in the recap i would brace myself for a serious episode and then half the time it really wasn't. unclench, nic.
*okay but this just made me think about how in twilight the werewolves all hear each other's thoughts and they start making fun of jacob for pining over bella constantly so i'm imagining the angels get to hear each other and they're making fun of cas for pining over dean LOL

Hellsite Nostalgia Tour 2023 Day 62
Time Is on My Side
"Time Is on My Side"
IT LITERALLY ISN'T
Would I Survive the First Five Minutes??: Weirdly enough, for a zombie attack, no one died for the cold open. Sure, the one guy DEFINITELY wound up with his intestines spilling out, but he wasn't DEAD. And the nurse who'd seen it all saw something new.
So we were in Ohio last episode, and now we're in Erie, PA. I'm feeling...targeted
I've made it pretty far without mentioning Lilith. She's only shown up once so far when Agent Henriksen died, yet she gets mentioned in every single recap. Will she come back today??
"No. We're very smart" is not something smart people have to say, my dude
Man.......so it's NOT zombies??? Unfortunate
Love that Dean is complaining about having to hear about the kinds of shit that happens on this show all the time like I'm not constantly eating lunch or dinner while I WATCH it. All I'm saying is I've got a stronger stomach than Dean Winchester
So...not a zombie...but an alchemist of sorts
This is such a weird episode...it's ALL over the place. I mean, there's A thread of connection (thankfully), but I've never seen them do so many different cases or case-like things in ONE episode
God....boys you only have so much time left together (or so you think), why split up NOW??
OMG, loving Rufus. SUPER uncooperative til bribed and pretty easily bribed. Love it.
Do...do we find out Bela's backstory here?? Color me intrigued..........fucking hell, of course we don't just yet (I really hope we do)
Would you believe it if I told you I'm completely uninterested in Sam's plotline this episode now?? Except for the guy who's Frankensteining himself. THAT is interesting (though he'll be treated like any other monster on this show). Actually, no....it's not EXACTLY Frankensteining, it's Ship of Theseus-ing.
What. Did. Dean. Find. Out. About. Her. I NEED TO KNOW. Oh. She killed her parents (though, from the small flashback, seemed like at LEAST one of them deserved it).
You know, the last time I watched two brothers try to do alchemy, it didn't go so great. This is, at least, a post 2003 world, but I'll give them a partial pass because Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood wasn't out yet.
Yeah, maybe don't let your guard down when you've angered a man who has Ship of Theaseus-ed himself with the organs of lots of really really healthy, in shape, athletic people.
Ho DO you kill this guy?? Oh. You don't. You just bury him alive...Okay then.
Bela made a deal too?? I hope that last scene wasn't the......so yeah, I just looked at imdb, that's the last of Bela. I'm gonna miss her.
"Been On My Mind...": this could be the penultimate entry of this game. It's been a MASSIVE let down for that one guy who wondered where all the "hot chicks the Winchesters were always hooking up with" went.
Edit: time was not on the side of the Winchesters having any romantic entanglements

do you have anymore insight on what war in the pacific theatre was like? I still find it very interesting that Jack was the only one (other than Rufus Hunt) who seems to have fought there
Hi anon! It is interesting, isn't it? I did a quick search, and apparently "out of the more than 16 million Americans who served, 2 million served in Europe, though the war against the Nazis has an outsized place in the American imagination." [LINK] So it does seem in line with American pop culture, though perhaps historically inaccurate, that of the casual handful of veterans we got in AC, only two managed to have experienced the Pacific Theatre.
Personally I don't have much to offer, but I can point you to more information!
First off, I would be amiss not to mention @historicalagentcarter! They did a post on Jack and the War in the Pacific [LINK]; specifically, they talked about the Battle of Okinawa. If you want a contextualised post, this is a very good starting point.
The history podcast History Hit has got an episode dedicated to the Battle of Okinawa [LINK]. Both History Hit and its sister podcast, Warfare, has got multiple episodes dedicated to the Pacific War and are very easy to listen to.
@eveningstar477 also found, sometime ago, a story in a book about surrendering troops in Okinawa being shot [LINK].
For a week-by-week map-based recap of key battles, you might want to check out the Pacific War playlist by the YouTube channel Kings and Generals. This is all strategic and tactical though—which general and which admiral told which ship to do what at what hour on what day. This will be very useful information if you are trying to write Jack or Hunt's backstory in a given point in a real battle.
As a TLDR, I can sum up what I observe to be key features of the Pacific War. I must warn you, anon, to take these with many grains of salt.
Landings. If you're familiar with the European theatre, you will remember that there are two major landings by western allies: the Sicily landing, and the D-Day Normandy landing. Those two landings were brutal enough, but with the Island Hopping strategy in the Pacific, that means there were more of such brutal landings.
Land-based vs sea-based. Just by right of the location, the European theatre took place mostly on land; making progress means moving forward on land. In the Pacific, that would mean travelling over open seas, and to make tangible progress, we are back to point one: landings.
Climate. It seems the climate in the western front as we know it was generally milder, whereas in the Pacific you would be dealing with hotter temperature and tropical diseases, which were things the troops most assurely were not accustomed to.
Absence of allies. Or at least, that's the impression I got. The Western front seemed to be a relatively more even mix of British, American, and other allied troops. The Pacific theatre, by impression at least, seemed to be a war fought mostly by the Americans. There were allies in the area—China, for instance, but they were fighting mostly within the borders of their country and did not really venture out into the Pacific. But other notable western allies were not exactly present. Most British troops were defeated and driven out of/imprisoned in the colonies in East and Southeast Asia early in the war, for instance.
Hope this is something to start with, anon!

Sahoni patch notes: -Updated color pallet -added more details like the corn husk dolly -adjusted some elements of the ui This is my fursona, something and someone deeply personal to me.
My fursona is a Wolf Person from my nations stories, but I tend to say red wolf (canis rufus) for simplicity's sake. It's easier than giving a cosmology lesson and recapping about 2 traditional sagas, a folktale, and a couple language jokes more times than not. A Wolf Person is not really a wolf, but a wolf-like magical creature and unparalleled hunter. And there are stories of them using magic and supernatural powers as they join hunting bands with legendary heroes, kill monsters, and even act as assassins.
My little red wolf named blue.

Review: They Both Die in the End
Tumblr media
Synopsis:
On September 5, a little after midnight, Death-Cast calls Mateo Torrez and Rufus Emeterio to give them some bad news: They're going to die today. Mateo and Rufus are total strangers, but, for different reasons, they're both looking to make a new friend on their End Day. The good news: There's an app for that. It's called the Last Friend, and through it, Rufus and Mateo are about to meet up for one last great adventure and to live a lifetime in a single day.
Plot:
Spoiler in the title, Mateo was going to die today. When the Death-Cast calls you, you have one last day to live your life, say your goodbyes, get your affairs in order, until you die. You do not know when you are going to die, or how, only that you will by the end of the twenty-four hours. This is why Mateo was content staying in his bedroom until the reaper came. Except he was not, despite his fears about his death and what the day entails, Mateo wanted to live, to truly live, on the day he was set to die. So he downloaded Last Friends. Last Friends is an app for Deckers, those who got the call that they were on deck to die, to meet someone to spend their last day with. As a friend, for other things, there are other apps for that. Having struck out a few times, Mateo was about to give up, when 17-year-old Decker Rufus came on screen. Giving Rufus a chance, Rufus becomes the one to get Mateo out of his house and gives him a day to live, truly live, as Mateo has always wanted.
Rufus was not having a good day, even before Death-Cast called him saying he was set to die that day. Beating up Peck, his ex-girlfriend's dumb new boyfriend, Peck calls the cops to Rufus’s funeral, ruining his chance to say a proper goodbye to his friends. On the run from the cops, and not wanting to spend his last day alone, Rufus agrees to pick Mateo up from his place so the two Deckers can hang out. Giving all they got with their final twenty-four hours, Mateo and Rufus find out what it truly means to live, love and laugh.
Thoughts:
Adam Silvera writes a perfect story, despite spoiling it from the start. Silvera introduces us to our two doom characters, switching between the point of view of Mateo and Rufus in each chapter, telling us who the point of view is from and the current time in the novel, and giving us one-offs from other characters, who are some way involved with Mateo and Rufus and their journey to live their final twenty-four hours. Silvera makes both boys loveable, with Mateo being the soft boy who wants to taste life for the first and last time, and Rufus giving us a bad-boy on the outside, a soft boy on the inside attitude; they are perfect together in how opposite they appear. Mateo is extremely relatable, as someone who was told they had twenty-four hours to live, Mateo decides to live his life the way some of us can only dream. With the settling being in New York City, Mateo truly has twenty-four hours to live his best life. Rufus had a rougher path in life than Mateo, making his death so much sadder, as you wish Rufus got to experience more happy days. Silvera did a perfect job making our two Deckers click, giving them experiences to make them grow closer, and allowing these two on their final day to find closure with life and each other. The side characters Silvera introduces are perfect, with Lydia being my favorite, however, the Plutos are also pretty cool. I was not the hugest fan of the other character Silvera introduce, I felt like they kind of took away from Rufus’s and Mateo’s story, however that disappointment melted away at the end of the story, where Silvera recaps how all the characters were related to each other in some way, making you realize how many different storylines you interact with within your own life, and how one day can mean so much. Silvera gives you a few jumps throughout the story, as where Rufus and Mateo are set to die, there are several times they avoided death, only to succumb to it in the end, leaving you crying and wishing that Silvera let Mateo and Rufus be the two to prove the Death-Cast wrong. Sadly as Silvera wrote at the start of the book when the Death-Cast calls, you are done, but like Rufus and Mateo, you can die in style and truly live your life, even if it is just for twenty-four hours.
