Google Pixel 4 takes over London with astronomical events

Londoners said they live in a city where they can’t see the stars but wish they could, so Google brought Londoners closer to the stars by showing them how the new smartphone Google Pixel 4 can do just that. It comes with Night Sight, a new feature that allows you to see into space and capture the Milky Way in just one tap, making astrophotography accessible to everyone.

On 6th November Google shut off the lights in the Shard and invited guests to come see it for themselves.

Galaxy themed food and drink - including a scarily inky blue cocktail - were out of this world, and Ashley James spun bopping beats as people experimented with the phones.

Astronomer Tom Kerss took to the stage to talk to about the cosmos and the history of astrophotography.

Everyone then headed outside where the lights were shut off for one hour, but unfortunately the sky was too cloudy to spot any stars. However, when taking a photo of the skyline you can easily see how bright the photo is even in low light.

On 18th November Google took over the Royal Observatory Greenwich where a number of guests were encouraged to take their own images of the stars using the smartphones new Night Sight mode, as ROG astronomers pointed out the best constellations to capture.

Again, galaxy themed food and drink made the rounds in the foyer in between the planetarium and the courtyard.

British Astronaut Major Tim Peake spoke in the planetarium about his love of astrophotography and his experience taking images in space, sharing his favourite photographs taken from the ISS including Aurora, Antarctica and London at night.

“It’s easy to forget to look up when we are going about our day to day lives so it’s great to see Google encouraging more and more people to get outdoors, look up and appreciate our incredible universe.”

Guests then headed outside into the courtyard to find an array of tripods and smartphones to use. Luckily it was a clear evening and one guy had a Star Walk app on his phone so he knew where the Milky Way would be in the sky.

You can wait up to 4 minutes for the Night Sight camera to take its shot, but it is well worth it. There were so many more stars in the photo than you can see with the naked eye!

Also don’t forget, Google have also taken over John Lewis’s rooftop, where you can have a game of curling, check out their caravan, disco room, have your fortune told and even win a Google Pixel 4 with the free grab machine!
