I think it would be hilarious if when Ed and Al joined team Mustang they just assumed Roy and Riza were married and like one day much to their confusion and sadness they find out they're not and the rest of Team Mustang has to be like we don't really get it either

Falman: What do you mean? It's Hawkeye. Riza Hawkeye.

Alphonse: What

Falman: H-A-W-K-E-Y-E, R-I-Z-A

Edward: Wait, I thought that was her nickname since she's the top sniper, "The Hawk's eye"

Fuery: Yeah, but her last name is also coincidently "Hawkeye."

Havoc: Honestly, that's probably where the name came from. The officials at the military academy aren't that creative.

Rebecca, with dramatic flare: Or maybe it was her destiny

Alphonse: So, is that why she kept her last name?

Havoc: What do you mean?

Edward: Why she didn't take the colonel bastard's last name?

Alphonse: Yeah, it could be confusing to have a Lieutenant Mustang and Colonel Mustang

Edward: Why do you think I call him Colonel Bastard, it's not just accurate but strategic

Rebecca: Oh . . . honey . . no

Edward: What?

Alphonse: What's wrong?

Edward: Why does everyone look sad all of a sudden?

Rebecca: *sniffles*

Havoc: *puts a comforting hand on Rebecca's shoulder*

Rebecca: *starts crying on Havoc's shoulder*

my headcanon is that at some point Mustang's entire line of command thinks that the Colonel and Lieutenant Hawkeye must have something going on except Edward, who's always ready to deny everything because he's strongly convinced that 1) it's just unfounded gossip and everyone must be insane for thinking it's true, 2) lieutenant Hawkeye deserves way better than that bastard, 3) come on, the lieutenant would never date someone like him, and 4) Mustang doesn't deserve anything in general, let alone a woman like her

so when he finds out they're actually in a relationship he starts freaking out (and Alphonse is like ,, told you so), he goes through the 5 stages of grief and actively tries to convince Riza to dump Mustang everytime he sees her (until Alphonse drags him away)

(they gotta thank Edward if the rumors died down tho)

So, we all know the comic where poor Fuery is subjected to some Royai dirty talk over comms, but the natural prequel to that has to be that, during the first mission where they did the comms and the codenames and all that (because I gotta believe this happened multiple times), for a moment when Riza starts talking to Roy, Fuery is wondering for like 4.6 seconds how the HELL a girlfriend of Roy's managed to call at just the right time—

And then he realizes that this is Lieutenant Hawkeye; it's just that she's genuinely flirting (maybe she's being a little over the top to make it sound less like her) and Colonel Mustang means every word he is saying back, and HOLY FUCK they really are low-key together. And later on, Havoc sees the look on his face and is like "ah so you get it now" and Fuery's all "yeah and I'm guessing we don't talk about it" and Havoc's like "nope; we do not" and Fuery makes his peace with it... until the phone sex starts. Poor dude.

Headcanon

Riza is not a physical touch sort of person - she has her own personal space and is intensely aware of it being intruded on - but on days when Roy comes into the office just a bit off - some PTSD acting up - or a bad anniversary, or just particularly lonely, she intentionally touches his fingers as she passes him a pen, or brushes against his arm when she's standing by him. She puts a hand on his shoulder to get his attention and feels him breathe back into the present.

She's grounding him.

If she ever said that, he would say technically he's grounding her, the same way an electrical current is grounded - because he can feel the sensation of her touch jolt through him all the way to his feet.

But she never says that to him, and he never responds to her. She just keeps on grounding him with her touch, offering what he needs even when it doesn't come naturally to her.

When Roy was learning his flame alchemy from Riza, she showed up to one of their “sessions” wearing a mini skirt because one of her friends made her wear one for fun. Roy realized that he really likes mini skirts (because of Riza) and therefore he wants to make the official uniform mini skirts because he wants to see her in one again (she hasn’t worn one since).

Hey! Thank you for the ask, that really interesting questions, and they give me matter to think!

I think they might first interact as colleagues and friends, especially when they don't know yet about the other couple. Jean and Rebecca would be the first to go public, since they don't have the hierarchic component between them. I don't think they would go on double dates, that would be a bit awkward for them.

Riza is be happy for Rebecca and Jean, but she first asked her friend how serious she is about her colleague, because he's suffered enough in his past relationships and she wants him to be happy. Rebecca is suspicious about Riza and Roy's relationship at first, and repeatedly asks Riza if the General (that's when they go public) hasn't coerced her into it. But when she sees her friend more relaxed, she relents and often teases Riza about her dates with Roy. Roy is glad for Jean and Rebecca, though he's not close with her. He only wants their relationship not to impact Jean's work ("look who's talking, chief! I saw you with the Captain the other day! And let me tell you..."). Jean just lives with the idea that his superiors are officially together, and is glad the tension in the office isn't as high as before, when their relationship was secret.

Rebecca is sometimes jealous of the trust she sees between Roy and Riza, while Riza can be envious of the freedom Rebecca and Jean have, especially before they could be official.

i will preface this with saying it's been about 5 years since i actually watched fma lmao so my concept of royai in general and canon may be (definitely is) skewed purely by my own self indulgence, delusions, and poor memory (for real, i read a fanfic once where they said grumman's first name was walter and i took that on board and for about 8 years thought that was his canon name 💀 i'm easily influenced hahaha) but who cares i'm thriving anyway so i'm happy 😌

ok so. headcanons

most of these change with my mood or what fic i'm writing to fit in with the story i'm writing. i love having flexibility and things to play around with lol

feelings developed tentatively when they were young (roy was both scared of but impressed by quiet, feral little riza). he was patient tho and eventually, riza fell too

idk when they each realised. i like to play about with that idea like toys in the sandbox lol so it chops and changes depending on my mood

they're both v professional obvs and hide their feelings well but sometimes roy gets a wee bit too into the role he ""plays"" while speaking to elizabeth and hears about it later. but he just shrugs and doesn't care bc how can he be sorry when he gets to pretend he's in love, or close to it at least, w elizabeth - not that there's any actual pretending hehehehehe

they end up becoming a dog family. all the pups. because it's what riza wants

realistically, would they have kids together?? hmmm ask again later but in my mind where there's 0 consequence and things are hand wavey yes 😌 need girl dad roy and mama hawk in my life

there is definitely a way they could play marriage between them and having a family strategically and politically and i've read some fab fics and thoughts where they do but i'm not clever enough to think anything up hahaha but i feel like they absolutely would in the canon world. it would suit them and their goals well if they did

obvs the kid would be loved and doted on don't get me wrong it would just be convenient that it worked out politically for them too

i'm sure i have more rattling about in my brain somewhere but i was up at half 4 this morning for a road trip and this is all i got for now hahaha

hi!! im still thinking about your royai week secret kid fic, it was a great take on their characters and just lovely writing :) do you have any particular headcanons about future royai? do you envision them getting together/married, or maintaining their superior/subordinate relationship essentially forever, or something in between? is the tone of your vision bittersweet, tragic, surprisingly gentle and happy? thanks in advance!

Thanks for enjoying that fic <3! It was so fun to write--and difficult too, because it's a bit outside of my idea of their future, but I like to think that they were able to find some happiness together sometime after it takes place. But how do you tell your child that you've killed other children? How do you live with the fact that your priorities will always lie with your spouse before them? I do have some ideas for writing something about them being not-so-great parents, because I do think that they would maybe not be the best at raising children, no matter how hard they tried.

My actual headcanons, however, are quite a bit different. I've read lots of amazing fic, but these are my own opinions--I don't think they should get married--or at least, not for a very long time. To me, this is about more than frat laws--they are committing treason through most of the story, why would they care about breaking one more law, or keeping one more secret? I think it's more to do with their conscience. Is their love more important than their goals for the government? Is it more important than restoring Ishval? It can't be. Riza would quite literally kill Roy and then herself if she thought he was wavering on his commitment to reparation and restoration, and while Roy couldn't wouldn't kill Riza, I do think abandoning her values would be the one thing that would make him love her a little less. I have a lot of thoughts on their resentment on both sides that I would love to fully explore at some point.

My main headcanon is that they have been in an emotional relationship since the war, and that it turns into a physical relationship some time after the Promised Day. I'm sure that there are people in their close circles who are aware of their relationship, but I'm not sure I see them getting married, and I don't really see them ever having children. But at the same time I do want want happiness and hope for them!! My feelings are as complicated as they are!

I like to explore Riza and Roy in different ways, but I suppose I prefer a dignified and sad ending for them. I think they should be involved in the restoration of Ishval--equivalent exchange, right? But would Ishval even want to accept their help? Should they be allowed to ever enter Isvhal again? I'm not sure. I like the idea of their relationship never being exposed outside of their inner circle. I like the idea of them being held accountable for their crimes in whatever way that might look like. Whatever happens, I would want them to face it together--the joy, the fear, the love, the loss. They are such complicated characters in canon, and I can't imagine anything afterwards would be straight forwarded or easy for them.
