Why do women love BL and M/M fanfiction?
I was watching a video today on the difference between how men relate to fiction vs women, specifically about the idea of fantasizing
The video argues that men like to identify with the male lead (think the superhero) that gets to play out the power fantasy and get the girl. The fantasy is unilateral, and a self insert for the consumer. For women on the other hand, fantasizing is bi-lateral. That means that for example in straight romances, women will relate with both leads at the same time - they wan to be the male pursuer because it lets them live out a power fantasy they are often denied in the societal constraints of real life, but AT THE SAME TIME they relate with the female being pursued because they want to feel desired and like they have worth in the eyes of someone powerful. Fantasizing is about the dynamic and being in control of it, not just the self insert.
Now let’s add to that societal norms, implicit dynamics in hetero relationships and cemented gender roles and we can see why when thinking of power fantasies many women think of embodying and relating to male characters because very rarely are women portrayed like that (think about why women select male characters in video games often times and I think you might find the answer to be the same…)
So if women can have the male pursuer to identify with as the center of control and power in the fantasy while also being given another man that is the center of affection (and often loving and tantalizing descriptions or art panel depicted from the pursuer’s POV) that’s even better isn’t it? Because the fantasy can go full circle of embodying the one with the power in the relationship while still pursuing a men you as a reader are attracted to and being able to switch it around (in the model of bi-lateral relatedness) and relate to the man being pursued and still feel free of gender norm shackles while being pined on by another attractive man.
Just food for thought.

Before they met each other.
Some more words under the fold.
Before Yuta met Toge he was nothing more than an exile, carrying the heavy weight of his lover’s death. While lady Rika had been extraordinary in life, in death she became a haunting reminder of all of Yuta’s shortcomings - how he loved a girl he should’t have, how his touch left her heavy with child, how his sins cursed her to an early grave. Before he met Toge, there was nothing to fight for, nothing to live for.
Before Toge met Yuta, he was despised and feared as the cursed child of the Inumaki clan. Unable to utter even a single word, forced to forever hide his face, he lived at the edge of his Clan’s grounds, in a small house under the shade of a great blossom tree. Before he met Yuta, he was certain no one would ever wish to know him. Before he met Yuta there was nothing to live for.

Can we just talk a little about the Inuokko dynamic??
I find it fascinating how their relationship dynamic can be summed up in Inumaki Toge would die for Yuta Okkotsu, and Yuta Okkotsu would hands down kill for Toge Inumaki.
Yuta has never had someone care so strongly about him that his life would become a priority. He’s always had people who would rather see HIM die, including himself as at one point he believed he doesn’t have the right to live (not a good life mind you, but live in general). Not even Rika embodies that. Yes, she will keep Yuta alive at all costs, but not by sacrificing herself, but by destroying anything that could harm him. Then, this boy comes along who thinks Yuta is so important, so precious, that thinks Yuta has so much to live for and see that he would rather sacrifice himself so that Yuta can live. Because Yuta is precious and important, something that no one has ever showed him before.
Then we have Toge. Toge who is feared because he could end someone with a word. Toge who is forced to stay silent, separated from others, never connecting enough to ever create the kind of bond where someone would look at him and think “I will protect you. I will give you everything.” Toge goes by his life alone, because up until he met the second years and Yuta, he was alone. Then, Yuta comes along who adores Toge so much that nothing is out of the question - he looks at Toge and doesn’t see a monster, a curse, a killer. No, he sees a sweet little rice ball that needs to be protected and taken care of, that needs to be shielded at all costs. If people look at Toge and say he can kill people because he is a curse, Yuta looks at him and thinks I will do the dirty job myself because Toge is too pure for that.
That’s it. That’s the dynamic.

Rika and Toge are alike, but different sides, totally!! That’s such a good point!
I see Rika’s love for Yuta as the more obsessive kind - it burns high and fast and it destroys everything. It’s uncontrollable and passionate and left such a mark on Yuta’s life before Jujutsu Tech.
Toge’s love however is the more subdued. It starts slow and shy, but it grows everyday until it becomes the blissful, peaceful, reliable and tender kind of love where you just feel like someone loves you whole…
Anyways, haha, I’ve hot no idea if the fic is your thing or not, but I so admit it’s a slowish burn so there’s that. Even I get trigger happy and just want to get to the parts where they kiss already dammit!! But to my point above, I feel like slow and steady suits them better…

Help me out Inuokko shippers!!!
I drew this cute little pose thinking that these two idiots in love had a super silly argument but fell short on actually finding what would they argue about! Help me out, give me ideas guys!
Did Toge eat all the chocolate because Yuta said he didn’t want any right now? Did Yuta forget to charge Toge’s switch? Did Yaga catch them smooching in the hallway because Yuta was getting handsy??

Under the Blossom Snow
Chapter 6 - Warmer Nights
Chapter 6 is out guys! ^^
For anyone looking for the fic to my Inuokko fanart, I offer this chapter as tribute!
As night settles over Kamakura, casting the Inumaki grounds into a hushed, chilled silence, Yuta usually sits with his back leaned against the wooden wall of his room, door slightly ajar, anticipating the song of his lord, as he turns and writhes, attempting to stave off the encroaching guilt that always comes.
It's not guilt or sadness but restlessness that consumes him tonight.
