Pictured above- Call Me Mrs. Mary E. Pleasant: The Midas Touch by L'Merchie Frazier- a portrait of entrepreneur, civil rights activist and benefactor, Mary Ellen Pleasant who made a name and a fortune for herself in Gold Rush era San Francisco. Her timeline from 1814 to 1904 begins in racial slavery as an indentured servant girl with no formal education. She ascended to a self-made millionaire, amassing a fortune in her lifetime of over $30 million, ($900 million today).
The second image is A Good Soldier: Thomas C. Fleming, America's Longest Serving Black Journalist by Rosy Petri- At the time of his retirement in 1997, California journalist Thomas C. Fleming was the nation's oldest Black journalist with the longest consecutive period of publication.
Both of these quilts are from Black Pioneers: Legacy in the American West at The James Museum of Western and Wildlife Art. Organized by historian, artist, and curator Dr. Carolyn Mazloomi, it includes 50 pictorial quilts created by members of Women of Color Quilters Network, a group founded by Mazloomi in 1985.
Mazloomi's statement at the exhibition entrance-
American history is incomplete without the stories of African American men and women, from our enslaved ancestors to our societal challenges. The role of African Americans in the movement toward westward expansion has been largely overlooked. This exhibition of original pictorial quilts brings into focus the rich and diverse stories and achievements of Blacks in American western history. The timeline begins with Esteban's 1528 arrival in the West and continues through the Civil Rights Movement.
At the end of Reconstruction in the South, discrimination and segregation caused African Americans to seek opportunities where there was less prejudice. In the 1800s, they moved by the thousands to the American West. Some went West as slaves, while free African American men joined the United States Army or became ranch hands, fur traders, cowboys, or miners.
Why quilts? Quilts and quilt making are important to American, and Black culture in particular. The art form was historically one of the few mediums accessible to marginalized groups to tell their own story, to provide warmth for their families, and to empower them with a voice through cloth. Using quilts to tell these stories accentuates the intersections of African Americans in the Western frontier while at once informing about the art form and its role in Black history. It is this often unknown and underappreciated shared reality that must be voiced if we are ever to truly value the unique contributions diverse groups make to the fabric of our nation.
The impressive quilts on view educate viewers with stories of individuals and events in African American history that may not have previously been familiar, and present new perspectives on those that are. It's a wonderful way to utilize a visual medium to captivate, inform, and often inspire.
This exhibition closes on 1/8/2023.

The Luckiest Girl in the World (chapter 13)
Summary: Rosie gets a surprising gift from her parents. Later, she surprises her Papa by proposing an interesting experiment.
Thirteen Years Old
I’d wanted one for a long time, but for some reason I’d given up hope, so you can imagine my surprise, when I opened the box Papa handed me.
“But it’s not my birthday yet,” I protested more out of courtesy than actual refusal.
“You need it now, and your birthday is months away. Think of it as a gift in advance if you must,” Papa said impatiently.
That should’ve given it away, but I was so taken aback, and my brain cells probably weren’t at their brightest. The box was heavy and by the look in Papa’s eyes, it was clear that this wasn’t just a tiny thing, but something grand and important.
“Open it before Papa combusts,” Dad suggested with amusement.
Papa huffed and urged me to unwrap the damn box.
“Sweetheart, are you alright?” Dad asked when I’d peered into the now open box.
I had become mute, and apparently also adopted Papa’s way of reacting when something unexpected and sentimental was bestowed upon him - rapid blinking.
“Fine,” I whispered and finally looked up at my expectant and slightly worried parents.
I placed the box with utmost care on the table and fell into Dad’s waiting arms.
“You liked it then?” he inquired.
“Of course!” I exclaimed. “It’s perfect. Thank you.”
I kissed his cheek and turned to Papa. His arms embraced me hard.
“Thank you, Papa. I should’ve realised, but I got distracted,” I murmured against his chest.
“You’re welcome, Bee. I’m glad you liked it. You’ll need it the next couple of weeks with that science project of yours, and after that…well, I’m sure we can find some use for it.”
The gift was of course my very own microscope. A professional one like Papa’s. I’d tried his numerous times but having my own meant that I didn’t have to wait for Papa to finish using his. The things I missed were a Bunsen burner, flasks, beakers, tongs and so on, but I gathered that I would be allowed to borrow what I needed under supervision. I was already equipped with safety goggles, gloves and a thick apron.
Papa had a whole lab set up down in 221C, which he used for his fouler smelling and toxic experiments. I knew I wasn’t allowed down there when one of them was ongoing, but hopefully I could persuade him to let me in if I was cunning enough.
***
In the weeks following my science project, I collected the items I wanted us to examine together. I had no idea if Papa already had studied this and made a spreadsheet like he usually did with things concerning the residents in 221 Baker Street. Truth be told, it was likely that he had, but I decided it was worth a try.
“I have a request,” I said after breakfast a rainy Saturday morning.
It would peak Papa’s interest if I used more adult language, instead of just blurting out: I want to do this and that.
“Pray tell.”
I had to try hard to keep my poker face intact when Papa’s eyes beamed at me from across the kitchen table.
“I know I’m not normally allowed downstairs, but I’ve noticed that there’s no ongoing experiments at the moment.”
I waited for Papa to respond, but he just narrowed his eyes and waved his hand, indicating that I should continue.
“Could we perform an experiment together?”
Dad cleared his throat.
“Nothing dangerous,” I hurried to assure him. “Just…come up to my room and see for yourselves.”
My courage was about to evaporate, but I straightened my shoulders and soldiered on. I added a please for good measure, and we all went upstairs.
I had placed everything on my desk. Zip bags with hair samples, threads from our clothes and fingernails, (alright, the latter was a bit disgusting, but at least it wasn’t toenails). In the petri dishes, I had collected our different shower gels, shampoos, conditioners and hair products. Sadly, Nana used hair spray, so there would be a gap in my spreadsheet.
“What do you think?” I asked expectantly. “We can compare…”
“Rosamund Watson-Holmes, you are brilliant!” Papa exclaimed, quite elated, laughing like a big child at this wonderful prospect.
“I guess, Christmas came early this year,” Dad added dryly. “Have fun, you mad scientists.”
He still shook his head fondly and I could hear him laugh quietly as Papa and I made our way down to 221C for a weekend of lab work.

Welcome mayors!
I haven't seen a competition for AC, so here you go. This is going to start with preliminary rounds of 6 characters each. These will include both villagers and special characters, like Tom Nook or Isabelle. I'll be including old characters who weren't in New Horizons, like Joan and Tortimer.
In the prelims, the top two from each poll will move on to the next round.
Propaganda is encouraged, but please no death threats or anything super violent. This is supposed to be fun.
I'm in the process of organizing the opening polls and gathering photos, but I don't mind starting this in a few days. Please reblog so we can have a better turn out.
Thanks!

It’s about the 1 year anniversary of the strongest dose of acid I ever did. I remember it was some ungodly temperature (prolly in the 100s for the better part of the day) and so bright out. When it first hit it was genuinely really scary, like “what did I get myself into” as I tried to put on music and all I could see was centipedes and spiders and nothing was familiar and recognizable. But I have enough experience with bad trips and over-dosing my psychedelics I was able to calm myself and after finding different music and relaxing the initial comeup anxiety totally subsided. I never want to forget how it felt listening to music and being able to dive into each piece of it, deconstructing each layer of sound, picking it apart like tweezers and a Petri dish. I felt like I could go into anything. Each song was accompanied by these vivid visualizers, some more clear than others. I saw midnight barnyards full of pulsing organs covered in barbed wire and bicycle rides at sunset over the Golden Gate Bridge to Sneaker Pimps, grinning black cats and jack o’ lanterns in checkered orange and black patterned circus tents to Siouxsie, I saw the cycle of death and rebirth play out over and over to Oingo Boingo. These weren’t closed eye visuals OR open-eyed hallucinations, they were just. extremely vivid images. It kinda felt like dreaming. I don’t think I came anywhere near ego death but during all of this I didn’t even feel like I was alive or a sentient being or a participant, I was just witnessing. It was so cool and I wish I could replicate this experience but I think the moment you start trying to recreate an acid trip you’re kind of doomed from the get go. Later on in the trip when it was cooler outside I went out to the beach with Angel, the sun was just beginning to set and it was genuinely one of the prettiest things I’ve ever seen. It sounds kinda lame to describe it this way but it looked like vaporwave lol. The sky was these warm pastel rosie pinks and purples and creamy golds over this deep purple-blue ocean with glittering white foam that sparked rainbow as the sunlight hit the tips of the waves. It was so beautiful.

kind of hysterical that considering it is so evident to compare rosi's christ stopped at eboli and petri's le mani sporche bc while they were still operating in the political cinema 'genre' they both stepped away from their usual way of approach bc as for rosi, eboli has this emotional, almost sentimental lens that is a transition from his previous films that are more documentarian and maybe even dry sometimes -although it's of course very subjective what one gets emotional about but while for example a moment of truth or illustrious corpses did strike an emotional cord with me i think objectively it wasn't the intention necessarily while in eboli making the viewer not just think but feel about these things is very much the aim- and for petri, this brechtian, fourth wall breaking theatrical staging is definitely something new -well for the record he did try to pull the same thing off in property is no longer a theft but i think there it fails miserably while in le mani sporche it works amazingly- and yet eboli got the (deserved) acclaim, criterion release etc and people are watching it while le mani sporche is barely possible to find and even then you have to watch it in a terrible form. of course this is just one aspect for comparison the first more obvious things are their miniseries format and the common theme of reflecting on the political situation at the end of the 1970s while using stories that were taking place way earlier in time as a vessel. and i'm only writing this bc there is so much to say and speculate about and there is literally a documentary out there talking about these 2 specifically but well you'll never guess it's unfindable. ironic isn't it
